Coronavirus in Pakistan

ISLAMABAD: The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) on Wednesday directed banks to make digital payments easy to discourage people from going to ATMs and banks as the coronavirus continues to spread across the country.

"The objective of these measures is to reduce the need for visiting bank branches or the ATMs and to promote use of Digital Payment Services such as internet banking, mobile phone banking etc," read a statement from the SBP.

The state bank has instructed banks to waive off all charges on online banking channels such as Inter Bank Fund Transfer (IBFT) and SBP’s Real Time Gross Settlement System. People will be able to transfer funds through phones and online.

This will not only be economical for customers but will also help them avoid the use of cash, which can trnasfer the virus to multiple people. The SBP announced that all helplines and call centres will be available to help customers 24/7.

"Financial industry has been instructed to immediately facilitate education fee and loan repayments through internet banking or mobile devices. Financial institutions shall also run awareness campaigns through different channels to educate customers to use internet banking or mobile phones, limit use of currency notes and restrict branch visits. Anticipating any frauds in the wake of digital transactions, SBP has advised financial industry to increase vigilance on digital channels and increase monitoring on cyber threats," read the statement.

Pakistan on Wednesday reported its second coronavirus death, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Health Minister Taimur Khan Jhagra said on Twitter, almost an hour after the first one was confirmed.

The national tally of COVID-19 cases has surpassed 290.

My family is asking my dad to stop going for jamaat for a few days but he doesn't listen he is 70 and a cancer survivor. Does anyone know if mosques will be closed in Karachi. He and his masjid friends are in 70s-80s the most affected by this virus but they still wont stop.

Tableeghi gatherings, marriage hall gatherings e.t.c e.t.c all are banned in Karachi. But the mosques are not closed yet and i am afraid it's not going to happen anytime soon. Because we people aren't taking anything seriously and we are being emotional idiots.

Sad that certain people are using this time of crisis to settle their political scores, and upstanding journalists are having to come up with videos like this to dispel widespread propaganda.

Why is there a sudden growth?

Is it community transmission?

Or people (from Iran) in quarantine found positive?

The pilgrims from Iran are being transferred to quarantine centers from Taftan border and being tested.... expect the number of positive cases to touch 2-3k by this time next week.

Another batch of 9000 pilgrims are supposed to return from Saudi soon, who will also be quarantined.

Soon we might surpass all countries expect China, Iran and Italy because our people all collectively decided to go on their respective pilgrimages in these testing times

Countries like Pakistan are unfortunately is in extremely bad position, if you lockdown it means millions will suffer as they depend on day to day work and daily wages and if you don't lockdown, this could spread like wildfire since there is extreme lack of awareness and people simply do not take isolation seriously.

I refer to this link for accurate numbers for all countries and they seem to be bang on. I noticed today they are showing 13 recovered for Pakistan, but I couldn't find any local source on media or social media to confirm it. I don't know where they got the figure of 13 from.

Any mass gatherings in enclosed spaces should have been closed down by now. That said, in Britain it has taken until today for the House of Commons to implement a social distancing policy, so it seems the whole world is collectively stupid when it comes to behaviour change.

Some good things -

China infection count is very low. They can provide support for testing and infra.
No of recovered patients is 12.

This is terrible, people from decent wealth in rural areas are so hard to convince and have numbers in support who resist medics and prefer staying at home. This jaahil mentality of sub continent not understanding situational gravity is sickening

In India govt is filing cases against ones who do not comply with isolation rules and are putting others lives at risk. Pak should do the same. These people should be put in some military dungeons.

Also in my city people under isolation are getting marked on hands so that others are aware and can raise an alarm. Yesterday 2 german tourists who were supposed to be in isolation were out in a train and public raised an alarm , stopped the train . Those Germans were taken away.

We are taking decisions that are reactive than proactive.

It is just not Pakistan

Pakistan should also use some kind of stamps on the hands of individuals who r meant to self isolate or else we desi ppl will not listen.

Reports Pakistan’s coronavirus cases increased by 141 today - total now is 448.

Even if I do get the virus,I am not that worried for myself. I just hope that it doesn't get to my grandfather (who lives with us) or my maternal grandparents, who already have a few health issues.

There have been reports of a case 1km from my place.

I just checked the official government site and it says 326 cases, 73 new cases in the last 24 hours.

http://covid.gov.pk/

The recent jump is because of the zaireen being housed in DG Khan, Multan and Sukkur quarantines that are being tested and increasingly turning positive. In total we will get about 7000 zaireen. Expect Pakistan's total figure to jump to 3-4k in a week or two. However, the zaireen are under quarantine, so less risk. More risk are the human to human transmission, which also seems to be happening.

May Allah be with us.

overheard a conversation between a friend and a v senior doc in karachi today, she sounded so panicked, said the number of cases coming in was overwhelming, the numbers, as is the case with every country, and substantial underestimates.

wash your hands with soap every few hours, avoid sharing food or drink, keep distance where possible and avoid touching people. stay safe ppl.

Yeah makes sense.

I guess Pakistan needs 2 sets of stats.

Quarantine results and local transmission results.

This is why Army needs to take over for three months. Our leaders are cowards infront of Mullah. They are making decisions that are not politically damaging for them.

People are giving a free pass to Immy. And for most leaders.

Yes, it's hard to control it in Pakistan.

Yes, it's hard to change people's behavior.

But has Imran tried his best?

Not by a LONG shot.

His supporters on this forum defend him and ask what he could have done. and then you read this: https://tribune.com.pk/story/218000...ening-pak-afg-border-despite-global-pandemic/

Not sure what explanation would come for this from his supporters other than the cliche "brothers and sisters" which doesn't make sense in this situation.

We are facing the consequences of this govt's poor decisions when they kept the land border opened with Iran. No vision at all from this government!

What he should do? Gov ordered to close Iran border, people and media shouted.

Govt order to check everyone at Airport and ask for Covid test, people and media opposed it.

Govt ordered to close Pak Afghan border, media and people opposed it.

And there are many other things. In Pakistan, people are playing politics over this situation, especially media.

No one is playing politics except the government. Stop putting the blame on the people or media. It is the government's responsibility to take stern actions rather than following the flow.

Government didn't close any border with Iran. Government put everyone in the camps in Taftan and made sure that even if someone is not infected, he should get infected with the virus.

People are even questioning why the airports are not closed as yet. The government has reacted very late on this and their management in Taftan is nothing less than a criminal act. Stop defending the government and putting everything on others.

1st death in Karachi today :(

First death reported from Sindh

Sindh health minister Dr Azra Fazal Pechuho has confirmed the death of a 77-year-old coronavirus patient in Sindh.

The patient, a resident of Karachi, was a cancer survivor and had diabetes and hypertension but did not have any travel or contact history.

Ok good question.

1. Close out all the inflow to Pakistan. Atleast from the countries where there are high cases. Has he done that?

2. Announce lockdown of high risk areas. Has he done that?

3. Order places of gathering to be shut down. I know its hard but has he announced that?

4. Run more tests (something which India has to do too tbh).

----

You keep saying people shouted so he backed out?

Is Imran the PM or not?

Demand more from your leader.

If he does his best and still things go bad, no one would blame him.

Right now, he is not doing enough. Not even close.

And just for the record, you might have a WHO official here or there who say India/Pakistan is doing well...It doesn't mean much as they may have stated it in a certain context...

Realities of the ground matter.

Containment and testing - 2 factors that matter.

Testing - we can leave aside as Imran may be acting upon advice but containment is his RESPONSIBILITY 100%.

And so the govt decided to give in to pressure from 'people and media'. Because stopping people from playing politics and maintaining a favorable public opinion is more important than saving lives.

This government has taken credit of WHO praise (when it was directed to Sindh government) and when people questions the rationale behind opening the borders, airports and not taking strict measurements, their supporters have the audacity to put the blame on media and people.

For God sake, stop defending the government on this. It is their responsibility to take strigent actions rather than lip service.

Well summarized.

Today, I was reading that the PSL coverage crew from India were allowed by Pakistan to go via Wagah border whereas their visa mentioned that they are allowed to travel by air. India refused to take them back and now they will be landing India via airports so India can do their proper screening upon their arrival.

This sums the mentality of the government and its officials. They are not taking it serious and just hoping that it will fade away. You just cannot keep putting blame on the people as they will always try to find the easiest way out. It is government's responsibility to take stern actions so the virus doesn't spread much.

Sadly, it is the government who is playing politics here. WHO officials visited hospitals in Karachi, met Sindh provincial officials and gave feedback on that. IK tweeted on that and took credit for that praise.

And when he gave speech to the nation, he praised Baluchistan's government (who are responsible for that Taftan disaster along side the federal govenment) and didn't even mention anything about Sindh's govt & their commendable efforts.

So, to the supporters of PTI who are claiming that others are playing politics on this matter. It is actually the opposite. It is the government and their beloved PTI who is playing politics on this.

Oh damn...

That's just sad man.

As you said, people will be people trying to take easy routes (especially desis who are hopeless).

Govt has to be more firm and try its hardest.

And so the govt decided to give in to pressure from 'people and media'. Because stopping people from playing politics and maintaining a favorable public opinion is more important than saving lives.
Looks like it

Not looking bad is more important than saving lives

I didn’t pray in the mosque but just looked at overall strength of congregation from outside. It was fully packed.

I was horrified to see that. It will spread like a wildfire

I am have always supported IK because I feel whatever his shortcomings may be, his heart is always in the right place. However, the responsibility for not stopping jumma prayers rests squarely on the govts shoulders. Yes, the people won’t have listened even if the govt had ordered a ban but that doesn’t mean you just give up and don’t even try to stop them. The govts position that only old people and people with travel history avoid mosques is the most ridiculous thing I have heard. Old people in our culture don’t live isolated in old homes. They live with their families. If I go to the mosque and become infected, I will go back home and become a death sentence for my parents.

Crazy advice lol

Why are you singling out the people only? What about the authorities. Please see above and this happened today. Apart from people, government is too taking the epidemic lightly.
