I meant how many tests Pakistan can perform per day.

What we should not do is spread panic, as PM said "ghabrana nahi hai"

It's not too late even if we have 10k infections this stops it from becoming 100-200k in 6-7 days.

no its not been to late. Your deaths are in single figures, even if they rise the majority seem to be related to the zaireen and the state knows where these people and their relatives have been. Also they seem to know where the clusters are.

Deaths will go up. It is inevitable but the key is managing the load. Testing is key, strategic lockdowns to flatten the upward curve. So far the country seems to be doing this. People are getting the message.

But more needs to happen. And now with the army out on the streets it will happen.

Do not panic. If you do a poor country like Pakistan will not be able to cope

I have spoken to a couple of people who are either doctors or have doctor friends in the emergency dept here in the uk. It is about to get very very dangerous here. departments are about to be overwhelmed. there is not enough equipment to help junior doctors. There are not enough doctors. The virus is spreading like mad. Over 10,000 unofficial cases and deaths are rising. young people are also catching it now. Some in intensive care. There is no lockdown, people are out on the beach enjoying the weather and travelling to northern areas and rural beauty spots. Some celebrities are posting videos how to "eff" the covid virus and not change your behaviour.

Be thankful you are in pakistan brother if you are. They are at least trying. The british think they can beat this virus by shouting at it and swearing at it..

yes, agreed that we dont need to show panic, but the trajectory doesnt look good tbh .... Pray to God to help us all ....

Sindh information minister Saeed Ghani is test positive of Covid-19 .... he was in all the meetings with CM sindh and Bilawal bhutto since last one week ....

Good, leading by example.

Now all those people who he had close contact with need to be tested and self isolate too. Being in the same meeting doesn't count as close contact. Talking to a person for over 15min within 2m does.

The Pakistan Cricket Board, on a request from the Sindh Government, has agreed to convert its Hanif Mohammad High Performance Centre as a temporary living area for paramedic staff working at the makeshift hospital at Expo Centre, Karachi.

Interior ministry approves deployment of armed forces across the country

The interior ministry has authorised the deployment of the armed forces in all four provinces, Islamabad, Gilgit Baltistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir.

Separate notifications have been issued by the interior ministry, approving the request made by the administrations of all provinces and territories. The decision has been made under Section 245 (functions of armed forces) of the Constitution and Section 131(A) (power to use military force for public security and maintenance of law and order) of the CrPC.

Professional and Home-Made Face Masks Reduce Exposure to Respiratory Infections Among the General Population

Conclusions/significance: Any type of general mask use is likely to decrease viral exposure and infection risk on a population level, in spite of imperfect fit and imperfect adherence, personal respirators providing most protection. Masks worn by patients may not offer as great a degree of protection against aerosol transmission.

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/18612429/

New study suggests wearing any kind of mask is beneficial over wearing no mask at all.

Start making your own home mask everyone and leave the professional masks for health workers. Look up YouTube tutorials, for the most lazy I suggest wearing a small towel cloth when going outside.

It's sad because now security forces get to openly play cat and mouse with the population when the ressources could have been used in a much better way.

How about giving the leaflet explain why they need to stay home and how they can protect themselves or get financial aid if they are desperate daily wage workers.

Yes I totally understand your point about the daily wage worker but even if 1 gets infected, it will spread like wild fire because they live in close proximity in huts/slums or congested places.

Then if they can’t afford 2 meals per day then no way they will be able to afford treatment and then it is the government who has to shell out the money. It is unfortunate truth that the working class will have higher mortality rate.

You said it right, they are desperate and understandably so but either the government needs to give them an assurance or enforce strict measures rather than leaving them to their own fate.

Pakistani doctors decry lack of supplies as lockdown debate rages

Islamabad, Pakistan - Authorities in Pakistan continue to debate whether to enforce a widescale lockdown to control the accelerating spread of coronavirus cases across the country, as cases hit more than 800 and doctors complain of dwindling personal protective kits.

On Monday, the southern city of Karachi, home to more than 20 million people, went into a mandatory lockdown, with the government restricting people to their homes other than to access essential services such as groceries, pharmacies or medical care, according to a government announcement.

Countrywide, Pakistan has so far recorded at least 810 cases of coronavirus, with six deaths and six patients making a full recovery, according to government data. The number of cases has more than quadrupled in a week.

In Karachi, citizens were ordered to remain within their homes and to only leave for emergencies or to obtain groceries or medicines.

"[The provincial] government is satisfied that it has become extremely urgent and important to prevent mixing/gathering/meeting of people by taking extreme measures to contain the spread of COVID-19 and therefore imposes ban on the movement and the gathering of people," read a government announcement.

The lockdown will remain in place until at least March 31, the statement said.

Pakistan's Prime Minister Imran Khan, however, on Sunday said he was not prepared to place the entire country on lockdown because of the associated economic costs.

"Twenty-five percent of Pakistanis are below the poverty line ... today if I impose a complete lockdown then … my country's rickshaw drivers, pushcart vendors, taxi drivers, small shopkeepers, daily wage earners, all of them will be shut in their homes," Khan said in a televised address to the nation.

"If Pakistan had the resources that Italy has, that France has, that the US has, that England has, I would fully lock down all of Pakistan today."

The prime minister advised citizens to self-quarantine if they felt ill, and to limit their social contacts to stop the spread of the virus.

Pakistan's government has placed a ban on all public gatherings, closed educational institutions, shopping malls and other public places until at least April 3. On Saturday, the country also suspended all incoming international air traffic until April 4.

Quarantine woes

Sindh province, within which Karachi is located, has seen the highest number of cases across the country, recording at least 352 cases since Pakistan's outbreak began in late February.

At least 210 of those cases were tested at a quarantine camp in the city of Sukkur, established to house travellers who arrived in the country from Iran and had previously passed through the Taftan quarantine camp at the border.

The Taftan camp - criticised by those held there as lacking proper medical and social isolation facilities - has been at the centre of Pakistan's outbreak of cases.

At least 57 percent of all people who have tested positive for coronavirus in Pakistan passed through the camp at some stage, according to government data.

"In Taftan, everyone was sleeping in a single room, all our children were sleeping with us," said Hussain Bux Gopang, 48, currently housed at the Sukkur quarantine camp.

"There were very few medical checks in Taftan. They would check our temperature on our forehead [and] they had no other checking there."

Others echoed those complaints.

"They kept us in a tent [in Taftan]," said Lal Bux Khaskheli, 36, a labourer who arrived at Taftan from Iran on March 2. "It was very, very cold, and we had small blankets. It was very difficult there. We did get food on time, but … there were just a few bathrooms ... for about 600 people."

The camp at Sukkur, which currently houses more than 1,000 people, has been set up in a disused residential complex, and people held there say facilities are much better.

"Per person, we get one room, with a bed, a prayer mat, a towel, soap," said Gopang. "Conditions are good here. This is 100 percent better than Taftan."

Khaskheli, however, disagreed, saying while there was better medical care and testing, those in the Sukkur quarantine camp were still not being treated for their pre-existing conditions.

"We have not been asked about our symptoms or what we should be doing in order to save ourselves from infection," he said. "The least they should do is monitor our conditions."

In addition to Sukkur, people who passed through Taftan are also being held at separate quarantine camps across the country, in Multan (1,247 people), Dera Ghazi Khan (782), Dera Ismail Khan (269), and just outside Quetta (532), according to the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA).

More than 400 people remain quarantined at Taftan, according to the provincial government's data.

Lack of supplies

Pakistani authorities say they are racing to secure supplies and hospital space in case numbers of COVID19 patients continue to rise. Currently, the government says it has more than 35 hospitals set up to deal with the outbreak, equipped with more than 118,000 beds.

Doctors across the country, however, have complained that they are battling the virus without proper protective equipment.

"We do not have personal protective equipment (PPE), or goggles, and even [face] masks we are buying from our own funds," said Dr Ahmed Zeb, 35, a spokesman for a doctor's union in the northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. "We have nothing and we don't know where patients are coming from."

Dr Hazrat Akbar, 29, practising at a major hospital in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, echoed those concerns.

"Only those on the front line have kits, those in emergency and casualty do not really have access to them," he told Al Jazeera.

At his hospital, which caters to thousands of patients a day, with a staff of more than 1,000, Akbar said there were less than 40 PPE kits left in storage.

On Friday, Lieutenant General Muhammad Afzal, the NDMA chairman, said the government was working on securing more PPEs and other resources for healthcare workers.

On Sunday, the health ministry announced that 14 metric tonnes of PPE, "including face masks, thermometers, gloves [and] gowns", had been dispatched to Pakistan.

On Sunday, authorities in Gilgit-Baltistan state said a young doctor had contracted the virus while screening travellers at a road checkpoint, and subsequently died.

"If we do not protect our healthcare providers and keep losing them ... what will we do? Won't it get worse than Italy and China?" asked Zeb.

Cooperation more important than isolation in fight against coronavirus: ISPR DG

Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) DG Maj-Gen Babar Iftikhar, while addressing a news conference in Rawalpindi on Monday, shared measures taken so far to contain the spread of coronavirus in the country.

He said all shopping malls, restaurants and public transport will remain closed across the country.

“All the borders have been closed but the real border is between human and coronavirus which we need to shut,” he remarked.

The chief military spokesperson said coronavirus can be defeated through prevention.

In view of the world’s best practices, actions will be taken to limit the interaction of the people, he said.

“COAS [General Qamar Javed Bajwa] has donated his one month salary for this fight against coronavirus,” Maj-Gen Babar said, adding that other army officers have also donated their salaries in this connection.

ISLAMABAD (Reuters) - The Pakistani army said on Monday it would help to impose nationwide restrictions to contain the spread of the coronavirus following a request from the government.

“The army chief of staff has ordered the deployment of all available troops and medical resources according to requirements,” a military spokesman, Major General Babar Iftikhar, said in an announcement broadcast live on television news channels.

Pakistan has so far reported 875 confirmed cases of the coronavirus and six deaths.

What is making me really furious is that in Europe they have manage to spread the propaganda that masks don't protect against the virus and only sick people should wear it besides the medical staff. The had to spread this Propaganda due to a low supply of masks.

Now it's almost a stigma if you go out with a mask. People look at use as if you are highly contaminated alien.

"Flu like symptoms" is a vague term now and shouldn't be used anymore.

We have enough reliable data from Italy and China to say that fever together with dry cough are the biggest identification of having the coronavirus. While a runny nose and a sore throat are less likely to be the main symptoms.

Nice representation of the numbers so far

Well spoken.

The only solution is mass testing and tracing contacts, Germany and South Korea have shown great results

Pakistan needs to find a way to make the test kits(get help from China to make it?). Slow it down till the vacince doesn't come till next year.

Yes, nice words. I liked the emphasize on screening, testing and contact tracing.

Let’s hope both India and Pakistan report less than 100 cases tomorrow and may be a downward curve from there . Fingers crossed .

Whatever numbers they report are not real. Truth is even in many EU countries real tests aren't getting done.

So take official stats with a grain of salt.

Yeah that’s true , but if it blows up every one will know in SC . I just don’t want us to get there .

No chance with continuous inflow of Zaireens. That's why I have been saying since day one that Covid-19 +ve Zaireens should be counted as cases of Iran. Good thing is that they are in quarantine since day 1 and not transmitting in community.

Follow deaths. They maynot give the whole picture as well but they are harder to overlook. From there you can project the situation is.

For example we have 6 deaths as of yesterday. This means at a mortality rate of 2% and assuming a delay between infection and death to be 10 days we were at 600 cases 10 days ago.

If I was in the government, I would be looking at four numbers.
1- The positive cases.
2- Suspected cases (which is why it is important to encourage people to come forward and report symptoms, be in online/over the phone).
3- Deaths due to Covid-19.
4- Deaths being chalked to pneumonia and flu (I am sure there are).

Together these numbers can provide a very good estimate of:
1- How wide spread the virus is.
2- How off are the confirmed positive cases from the true positives.
3- What the situation will be in say a couple of weeks.

And above all, this gives you the ability to model the situation and then the predictive power to test the model.

Then you can really form an effective and timely response based on actual data not what feels right and what you think the consequence would be (like our government seems to be doing).

I agree however difficult it might be, this is the ideal response. We need make progress on it especially with our crippled healthcare system.

The way forward should be isolation/cutoff/curfew in clusters and mass testing. This along with building accurate, real time models would ensure we stay ahead of the curve and may have a chance of flattening the curve.

ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad High Court (IHC) has granted bail to 408 prisoners imprisoned at Adiala Jail under minor offences amid coronavirus fears, ARY News reported on Tuesday.

Chief Justice Athar Minallah approved bail petitions of the prisoners.

The bench also constituted a committee to materialize the release of 408 prisoners on bail. The committee included Director General Anti Narcotics Force (ANF), deputy commissioner, I.G. Police and other concerned officials.

The district administration in Islamabad had earlier decided to release prisoners jailed over petty crimes amid fears of coronavirus outbreak in overcrowded jails.

The Islamabad administration had earlier decided to release 230 prisoners in first phase on bail, jailed over petty offences.

Those freed were jailed for their involvement in cases of dishonored cheques, beggars act and other minor crimes.

IHC Chief Justice Athar Minullah conducted hearing on a case pertaining to 1,362 prisoners being incarcerated in overcrowded jails.

During the hearing, the court inquired from officials if prisoners who are facing jail-term without having been tried could be released.

Deputy Commissioner Islamabad Hamza Shafqat assured the court that no prisoner held at Adiala Jail has been infected with the coronavirus.

The IHC directed the deputy commissioner to appoint an officer to oversee the matters pertaining to surety bonds of the detainees.

Before releasing a prisoner, proper screening shall be conducted by authorized officials nominated by the Ministry of National Health Services and Coordination, Government of Pakistan or the Director General (Health), Government of Pakistan, as the case may be. The officials shall also ensure the screening of fresh admittance,” reads the verdict.

The Deputy Commissioner, Islamabad Capital Territory shall identify such prisoners who are eligible to be considered for release under the Prison Rules, the Probation of Crl. Misc. No.214/2020 Offenders Ordinance, 1960 and section 410(1) of the Cr.P.C. after identifying the eligible prisoners, their respective cases shall be processed under the relevant laws, reads the verdict.

Sindh minister hints at imposing curfew as people ignore lockdown orders

KARACHI: Sindh Information Minister Nasir Hussain Shah on Tuesday hinted at imposing curfew across the province as people ignored government’s lockdown orders, ARY News reported.

Sindh government had imposed a complete lockdown for 15 days from March 23 in order to contain and curb further spread of coronavirus.

Talking to ARY News, Nasir Shah said that government will left with no option except imposing curfew as people are not taking lockdown orders seriously.

He once again appealed the nation to stay at home and support the government in fight against COVID-19.

Several people in Karachi came out of their homes on Wednesday morning and traffic was witnessed on major roads of megacity despite the lockdown in the province.

The Sindh government on Monday imposed a ban on pillion riding across Sindh for 14 days.

“It is pertinent to clarify that pillion riding on motorbikes which will increase virus spread manifold is strictly not allowed,” the provincial home department issued a clarification with regard to its lockdown orders.

The total number of coronavirus cases in Pakistan has surged to 892 after new cases were reported in different areas of the country.

According to the National Command and Control Centre for the novel coronavirus, out of the total, 399 cases were reported in Sindh, 249 in Punjab, 110 in Balochistan, 81 in Gilgit-Baltistan and 38 in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, whereas 15 people were diagnosed with the deadly virus in Islamabad and one in Azad Jammu and Kashmir.

Pakistan's first coronavirus death exposes nation's vulnerability

When Saadat Khan, 50, returned to Pakistan on March 9 from a pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia, he was greeted in his village with a rousing welcome and a grand feast attended by more than 2,000 people, many of whom embraced him warmly.

FATEFUL JOURNEY

In late February, Khan flew to Saudi Arabia to visit the holy city of Mecca for Umrah, a religious pilgrimage performed by millions of Muslims from across the world each year. Khan entered the country just before it shut its borders to Umrah pilgrims, in a bid to stem the spread of COVID-19.

Khan was in Saudi Arabia for two to three weeks, according to the doctors handling his case and an acquaintance from his village.
