What's new

Coronavirus in Pakistan

Bro I'm an on duty medic in Faisalabad. Nothing to panic. Things are under control till now.
Out of 10 +ves, 5 are in one family and all 5 are asymptomatic.

That's good to hear. But reports of some areas being cordoned off is that true? how many local transmission? are more people being tested?

Tableeghi Jmaat and Iranian zaireen have collectively screwed us.

Video of a Pakistani mullah making a dua in a congregation has gone viral:

‘Islam is under threat by Corona virus. Oh Allah, please divert the virus towards non-Muslim countries.’

This is the intellect level of Pakistani mullahs!

They have asked residents of few villages to not socialise .
Till Saturday night, there were 9 confirmed cases and 1 death.

And 05 family members of dead person have tested +ve. That's 6 cases in one family. Statistically , This says that 66% of total +ve cases in Fsd are from One Family.

I am the first to make fun of and criticize idiotic mullahs as anyone who’s followed my posts can attest here but what you’re telling is a one-off incident and certainly you can’t generalize to all. I haven’t seen any of such sentiments despite being in many tableeghi circles.

What is definitely true is the insanely stupid ‘quick treatments’ being forwarded on WhatsApp

Tableeghi Jmaat and Iranian zaireen have collectively screwed us.

There was bound to be some source sooner or later. Zaireens and Tableeghi were merely ordinary citizens caught up at wrong place at wrong time.

InshahAllah we will curtail it. Everyone, Be careful but don't panic.

The leadership of the tableeghi jamaat in particular has blood on their hands.

They had their stupid raiwind festival despite corona virus already happening and pleas being made to not hold it. Pests they are

CHAGAI: Hundreds of Pakistani origin pilgrims continue to make their way from Iran through Taftan to Pakistan amid the coronavirus pandemic despite border closure, ARY News reported on Sunday.

According to details, Pakistani authorities are taking in pilgrims daily from the Taftan region which is an area between Iran and Pakistan

It has been revealed that regardless of numerous messages relayed to the Iranian government by Pakistani authorities asking them to not force out Pakistani pilgrims from Iran amid the deadly coronavirus outbreak, Iran continues to carry on the practice with impunity.

Deputy Commissioner Chagai, Balochistan said that Iran is abandoning pilgrims at the Taftan border without safety or amenities forcing Pakistan to take them in or they would die of hunger and thirst if not from the virus itself.

DC Chagai also said that Pakistan has also protested the act emphatically in front of Iranian authorities but they have as yet not refrained from the practice.

100 more pilgrims made their way into Pakistan on Sunday and have been transferred to Balochistan quarantine centres.

ISLAMABAD: Amid lockdown situation due to Coronavirus epidemic, Minister for States and Frontier Regions (SAFRON) Shehryar Khan Afridi has stepped up efforts to provide food and ration supplies to Afghan refugees trapped in their camps.

In this regard, Shehryar Afridi wrote letters to United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and urged the world organisation to accelerate relief efforts and provide food ration to the Afghan refugee families trapped in lockdown in across Pakistan, said a press release issued on Saturday.

According to estimates, there are around 3.5 million Afghans living across Pakistan out of which 1.8 million are registered while 0.8 are Proof of Residence (PoR) card holders. Rest are illegal immigrants, called aliens, who are yet to register themselves with authorities concerned.
SAFRON minister along with cricket legend Shahid Afridi on Friday visited Afghan refugee camp in Kohat and oversaw the distribution of food packages to 1,000 families affected by the lockdown. The food supplies were provided by Shahid Afridi Foundation.

On the occasion, Shehryar said that he had launched the food supplies campaign according to vision of Prime Minister Imran Khan and the government would reach the Afghan refugees in every nook and corner of the country with assistance package.

He expressed special gratitude to Shahid Afridi for providing food ration to 1,000 Afghan refugee families. Shehryar Khan Afridi appealed to the people that in these difficult times, every Pakistani has to remember the weak and the poor segments of the society who may not get food due to lockdown situation.

On the occasion, Shahid Afridi said that Afghan refugees are our brothers and Pakistanis stand side by side with Afghan families in these testing times. He said that the Afghan brothers should not be forgotten in these difficult times.

Meanwhile, in line with the request of Shehryar Afridi, the UN Refugee Agency, UNHCR has started dispatching core relief items in support of the government of Pakistan’s response to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The relief items include medical supplies and sanitation products such as sanitary clothes, soap and disinfectants. These packages will be provided to health facilities in support of refugees and host communities in Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab.

Four trucks carrying some of the many items left from UNHCR’s central warehouse in Nowshera, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa; destined for Balochistan. More items will be delivered next week. “UNHCR is committed to supporting the government’s Covid-19 prevention and response measures,” said the UNHCR Deputy Representative in Pakistan Iain Hall.

He said that the Agency’s priority is to contribute to the overall effort to minimise the spread and impact of the virus. It will provide medical supplies and consumables including personal protective equipment (PPE), which will be delivered to support the people of Pakistan and the Afghan refugees that they have so generously hosted for forty years.

UNHCR is currently focusing interventions in three main areas: prevention and response; water and sanitation; and risk communication. The Commissionerate of Afghan Refugees (Ministry of SAFRON) and UNHCR’s NGO partners are amplifying the Government’s messages and reminders based on WHO guidance on Covid-19 infection prevention and control, including self-hygiene and social distancing.

Meanwhile, the Refugee Rights Network Pakistan (RRN) has highly appreciated the efforts by Minister SAFRON Shehryar Afridi for helping the Afghan refugees in testing times.

two more deaths in sindh takes tally to 21. This has been worst 24 hours as far as casualties. The latest victims carried virus from the Tableeghi gathering.

Even now if these 1658 are placed under strict house orders, the virus can be contained. Also making sure that the rest of the population only comes out for emergencies. All jumaa, religious gathering should be banned for 2 weeks.

The Supreme Court on Monday suspended all decisions taken by high courts regarding the release of under-trial prisoners due to the coronavirus outbreak.

The apex court also directed the provincial governments and the high courts to refrain from issuing any further directives.

A five-judge bench, comprising Chief Justice Gulzar Ahmed, Justice Umar Ata Bandial, Justice Mazhar Alam Khan Miankhel, Justice Sajjad Ali Shah and Justice Qazi Muhammad Amin Ahmed, was hearing an appeal challenging the exercise of suo motu powers by the Islamabad High Court regarding granting bail to under-trial prisoners.

On March 20, IHC had ordered release of under-trial prisoners detained in Rawalpindi’s overcrowded Adiala jail in minor crimes and directed the Islamabad police not to make arrest in petty matters.

During today's proceedings, the additional attorney general said that the high courts are giving different rulings regarding the release of prisoners. He asked the SC to decide the matter.

The CJP questioned how the high courts could have ordered the release of under-trial prisoners. "Coronavirus is a grave matter. Under what pretence did the IHC issue the directives for releasing the prisoners?"

"How can a high court take suo motu notice in this regard?" the CJP asked. Those involved in petty crimes should be released, but the IHC has ordered for the release of all prisoners except those charged with terrorism, he said.

It cannot happen that people start making decisions which are not within their jurisdiction during a crisis, the CJP said, adding that those prisoners who have two to three months left in their sentences should be released.

He added that everybody was aware of the current situation in the country. Therefore, the release of prisoners involved in serious crimes cannot be allowed because of a coronavirus scare, he said.

The apex court adjourned the hearing until April 8 and issued notices to the federal government, all advocate generals, provincial home secretaries, Islamabad IG, the National Accountability Bureau prosecutor general and the IG jails.

Syed Nayab Hassan Gardezi had moved the six-page appeal before the Supreme Court on behalf of Raja Muhammad Nadeem, questioning whether the IHC had any jurisdiction to exercise suo motu powers.

The appeal had pleaded that the March 20 IHC order militated against the concept of trichotomy of powers since it was within the exclusive domain of the executive to frame any policy to deal with under-trial prisoners in a manner it deemed appropriate keeping in view the coronavirus emergency.

The petition had also raised a plea asking whether the inherent powers vested in the high court under Section 561-A of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) were unfettered or whether they can only be exercised in situations where no express statutory provisions were available.

Glaring omissions and mistakes have crept into the March 20 IHC order violating the law, the Constitution and public policy, the appeal had contended.

According to a notification issued by the Crisis Management Cell of the Office of the Deputy Commissioner Dir Lower, three family members of a woman who tested positive for the coronavirus have also tested positive for Covid-19.

27 Tableeghi Jamaat members test positive for coronavirus

LAHORE/LAYYAH: Some 27 members of Tableeghi Jamaat out of 35 screened at the Tableeghi Markaz in Raiwind tested positive for coronavirus on Sunday while another member of the religious outfit put in a quarantine in Layyah stabbed and injured a police officer in a bid to escape.

Around 1,200 people, including over 500 foreigners, were attending the five-day congregation before leaving for three-day, 40-day or four-month preaching missions. They are camped in an open space adjacent to the Markaz.

Earlier, Punjab government officials had requested the organisers to postpone the congregation in view of the virus threat, but they did not pay any heed to it. But when the organisers had a change of heart and stopped the congregation four days ago, the government-announced lockdown had come into effect with no transport and air services available to take them home.

The station house officer (SHO) was injured in Layyah when the Tableeghi Jamaat member attacked him with a knife in an attempt to escape. Later, the police and district administration approached the organisers and with their permission cordoned off the Markaz and no one was allowed to enter or leave the place for the last three days.

On Saturday, the Royal Thai Embassy in Islamabad, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, contacted the authorities to evacuate their 50 citizens from the Tableeghi Markaz. The health department conducted screening of the Thai citizens who tested negative for the virus. They were shifted to Islamabad from where they were flown to their country by a private jet.

Lahore Deputy Commissioner Daanish Afzaal told Dawn that they had sealed the Markaz three days ago and started conducting screening of the people there. He said the health authorities had so far screened 35 members residing at the Markaz and alarmingly 27 tested positive for coronavirus. “We are also setting up a quarantine at the Markaz and if the number of patients increases they would be shifted to the Kala Shah Kaku quarantine centre,” Mr Afzaal said.

He said the suspected persons would be self-isolated at Kala Shah Kaku and those who tested positive for coronavirus would be shifted to a field hospital at Expo Centre in Johar Town.

The Layyah administration had gathered all the Tableeghi teams on preaching missions in the district and declared the local Markaz a quarantine centre housing 235 people.

On Sunday, police were informed that some people were trying to escape from the centre. When SHO Mohammad Ashraf Maakhi reached the spot with a team, a Tableeghi Jamaat member stabbed him and escaped.

Police spokesperson sub-inspector Nadeem said the SHO sustained injuries and was shifted to the DHQ Hospital in Layyah, where his condition was stated to be stable.

Police later apprehended the accused from Swabi district in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Maybe someone who has greater knowledge of religion can tell me if its possible or not. Why can't PTV or private channels have a "virtual" jamaat for Friday prayers. Most prayers you can do yourself, but the mullahs are making an issue about jumma because it has to be prayed in jamaat. So why can't we have a khateeb deliver khutba through television and he then leads the prayer while people follow along in their own homes. Is something like this possible?

Modern issues need modern solutions.

What being done in the ME? parts of it are in complete lockdown from the last few weeks and I assume people there would be more religious than in Pakistan?

Not really.
Pakistanis are more religious than most of the ME.
Probably just a bit less than KSA tbh

People beginning to recover.... next two weeks if we keep growth linear we might have more people recovering than getting infected

I think it will take a 2 weeks or more to see recovery numbers matching infected ones , but that’s fine I guess

Sad, disheartening and tragic.

Sad, disheartening and tragic.

These people need to be dealt with harshly. It says everything about their mental capacity if they don't understand that now is not the time for large religious gatherings. Not only putting their congregation in danger, but also those who are forced to deal with the fallout, including police, doctors and nurses.

COVID-19 lockdown: 5,663 cases registered in Punjab over Section 144 violation

LAHORE: A total of 5,663 cases have been registered in Punjab over the violation of Section 144 — which was imposed on March 15 as part of the coronavirus lockdown — and against hoarders and profiteers, police said Monday.

According to a police spokesperson, 153 cases have been filed over the violation of the Price Control and Prevention of Profiteering and Hoarding Act. Further action was being taken against those artificially increasing the prices of and hoarding essential food and daily use items.

In addition, police took action against 57 shops and four restaurants for violating Section 144, the spokesperson said, adding that 26,401 people had been checked so far at the 1,282 check-posts set up earlier.

Inspector-General of Police for Punjab Shoaib Dastagir in this regard instructed the regional and district police officers to speed up action against those violating the law and ensure that officers and personnel assigned on field duty adhered to preventive measures against the coronavirus pandemic.

On March 15, the Punjab government had announced the imposition of Section 144 throughout the province for three weeks after new cases of the novel virus were reported.

All educational institutions in the province were to remain closed and the teaching staff would also not be permitted to enter schools, colleges, and universities. The provincial government has decided to keep parks, zoos, and picnic points closed for the public.

No one should be thinking about economy right now, its all about survival.

That is true but Pakistan's population is very young and this virus isn't very dangerous to young people so i don't expect there to be many deaths in Pakistan.

Anyways, we still should be looking at the future. People will be affected by the aftermath as much as they're being affected by the virus itself.

That's equally important threat. We are a Resilient nation anyway and will survive through it. Just need sincerity from elite and transparency all along.

The leadership of the tableeghi jamaat in particular has blood on their hands.

They had their stupid raiwind festival despite corona virus already happening and pleas being made to not hold it. Pests they are
what about Imran Khan? when the virus came out in Wuhan, he stops all Pakistani students to come back from there (which was a good decision). But he kept the border open and did not check anybody who is coming into Pakistan from anywhere. That bring the virus into Pakistan and now Pakistanis are suffering. Did he not know that Chinese are well traveled all over the world so virus can come from anywhere? If Imran Khan had closed the border at the earliest then there would be no local cases of virus in Pakistan, there would be no need to lock down and the poor would not have faced devastation.
If you are going to talk about blood on their hands then nobody has it more than Imran Khan.
Good thing is he has realized his mistake and now Pakistan is front in combating this virus in the world and the world is appreciating Pakistan's efforts.

young people are equally vulnerable it’s been established already. there are people in their 30s under life support ventilators in other countries. Pakistan should not be complacent.

No, they're not equally vulnerable.

IK is not saying that young people are not vulnerable at all, rather that they're are less vulnerable. He could have said it a bit more clearly but that was the essence of his message.

That message should have been a lot more clearer. I understand that he doesn't want to create panic and also wants the economy to keep functioning but it is important that the threat is not trivialized. It might not be a threat to young people but it has to be understood that:

- They can become carriers and pose a threat to the elderly and vulnerable
- Age provides no guarantee of survival if there are underlying medical conditions
- The more infected people there are the greater the burden on healthcare systems leading to deaths not just from COVID but other causes as well

Hence it is imperative that the PM frames his messages in such a way that they don't induce panic but also don't trivialize the issue.

UN warns Pakistan could be hardest-hit by pandemic

The UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) has bracketed Pakistan among the countries which would be the hardest-hit by the coronavirus, demanding a raft of measures for their relief.

UNCTAD has said in a new report that the developing countries — which according to a UN body’s tally number 170 — would need a $2.5 trillion support package this year to face the economic crisis caused by the pandemic.

These economies will take “enormous hit” from high capital outflows, lost export earnings due to falling commodity prices and currency depreciation, with an overall impact likely worse than the 2008 crisis, the report said.

This is a worrying report. Just hoping we do enough before this turns bad for the worse. Time to put all political differences aside and stand up as a country. Just impose whatever measures are required for people to survive.
