Lyari residents protest lack of ration distribution

Angered by the unavailability of funds and ration for daily-wage workers, scores of residents from Lyari took to the streets to protest on Thursday. The protesters alleged that the Sindh government has failed to devise a mechanism to distribute ration to the needy, despite the passage of eleven days of the lockdown.

Scores of residents, including women and children, from different localities of Lyari including Agra Taj Colony, Machhar Colony, Memon Society, Hangurabad and the adjoining areas were part of the protest.

The agitated protesters erected barriers and blocked Mauripur Road, halting the movement of vehicles carrying goods, as they shouted slogans against the provincial government. This resulted in a traffic jam on Mauripur Road itself, as well as West Wharf, Jinnah Bridge and Native Jetty Bridge.

The distraught citizens said they felt that they were being lied to by the federal and provincial governments.

“We don’t have ration to feed our children, who will die due to the unavailability of food,” the protestors stated. “Who will be responsible if they die?”

They stated that when they arrived at ration distribution points, they were turned away by the authorities with the use of force.

A heavy contingent of the law enforcement officials reached the protest site and calmed the protesters down. The demonstration ended when the law enforcers assured the protestors of their full cooperation.

I hope you are right. It's good that they extended the lockdown to two more weeks. I think they should extend it till may.

Only till the end of April can we really say where we are with the whole situation. Hopefully it gets better, but the challenge will remain after that too, the bigger challenge.

That to isolate, test and report on a massive scale. Put everyone coming in from abroad in quarantine and test them.

We have to do this untill we get a vaccine. This is not going to go away in 4 weeks. It is here for the better part of the next year and a half.

Speaking at a media, he said domestic and international flights will remain suspended for the time being.

Moeed Yusuf said flights would resume slowly after a decision in this regard is made in light of the coronavirus situation. He said no Pakistani is stuck at airports abroad and that Thailand returnees tested negative for COVID-19.

Pakistan’s Only Brewery to Make Sanitizers as Demand Lures Fakes

Murree Brewery Co., Pakistan’s only maker of alcoholic beverages, plans to manufacture hand sanitizers after a surge in demand led to fake and ineffective hand washes propping up at stores.

The company has been given permission to make 10,000 gallons of sanitizers a month, Chief Executive Officer Isphanyar Bhandara said by phone. The Punjab excise department did not respond to a request for comment.

The coronavirus outbreak earlier this year resulted in a run on sanitizers and lured manufacturers to sell products without the necessary alcohol content needed to kill viruses. Prime Minister Imran Khan’s government ordered 23 brands that did not meet World Health Organization standards to be removed from stores. The virus has infected about 2,000 people and killed 34 in the South Asian nation.

Pakistan has been locked down as the government tried to stop the disease from spreading. The Rawalpindi-based Murree has also urged the government to reopen liquor stores to stop the rising sales of toxic illegal liquor that has killed people.

Khan’s government announced a stimulus package of more than 400 billion rupees ($2.5 billion) while the central bank announced an interest-rate cut in an unscheduled meeting to support the slowing economy. Moody’s Investors Service revised its forecast for Pakistan’s growth to range between 2% and 2.5%, the lowest in a decade, from an earlier forecast of 2.9%.

KARACHI, Pakistan

Nestled on the northern outskirts of Pakistan’s most populous city of Karachi is a dusty, sprawling locality with limited access to healthcare and basic sanitation which is home to nearly 250,000 Afghan refugees who were forced from their country by a lingering conflict.

Piles of garbage, sewage gushing from choked gutters and unclean water, which often causes diarrhea and other waterborne diseases in children, have turned it into a distressingly impoverished neighborhood even by Karachi's standards.

It is commonly known as an Afghan basti (town), where extended families jam into small mud and concrete houses and even in tarpaulin shelters, making social distancing impossible. In addition, a lack of water and sanitation products make this neglected neighborhood a perfect breeding ground for contagion.

But the people here are more worried about food rather than the formidable novel coronavirus, which has already infected and killed hundreds of thousands across the globe.

Apart from the government, scores of local and international non-governmental organizations (NGOs) are trying to provide food and rations to the inhabitants of the impoverished localities in the country of over 200 million people, but these refugees are rarely a priority.

Karachi is home to more than 300,000 Afghan refugees, most of whom work as laborers or own small shops mainly in Pashtun-dominated areas. But a crippling lockdown that the government imposed late last month in a bid to stem the spread of the coronavirus, known as COVID-19, has left tens of thousands of refugees jobless.

"The coronavirus is dangerous, but hunger is more so. That’s what we are more worried about,” Haji Abdullah, a leader of Afghan refugees, told Anadolu Agency.

"If you ask about masks and sanitizers here, people will talk about food, which is their top need.”

There are around 2.8 million documented and undocumented Afghan refugees living in Pakistan, making it the largest refugee population in the world after the Syrians in Turkey.

Only around half of the refugees are registered, with the rest to live without documents, mostly in northeastern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and southwestern Balochistan provinces which border war-infested Afghanistan.

Southern Sindh province, of which Karachi is the capital, also hosts 500,000 Afghan refugees.

According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), more than 3.8 million refugees have been repatriated to Afghanistan since 2002, but many returned to Pakistan due to ongoing violence, unemployment and a lack of education and medical facilities.

Depression

"This lockdown is increasing depression among us, especially youths. Their work has already dried up, and rations are depleting. But neither the government nor the NGOs care about us," said a visibly emotional Abdullah.

Rahamat Wali, an Afghan refugee who runs a grocery business in Peshawar, the capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, shared a similar tale.

"The lockdown has badly affected our businesses. For the last nine days, our shops remained closed, causing not only financial damage but leaving thousands jobless," Wali told Anadolu Agency.

He has sent several of his employees back to their homes located in different parts of Peshawar.

"We had no other option but to send them home. People like me can bear the brunt of the lockdown for a few weeks, but how would these poor people do that?”

Abdul Wahid Afkari, a fruit seller from the capital Islamabad, is another hard-hit victim of the lockdown.

"I sell fruits on a handcart at a fruit market in Rawalpindi. But for the last seven days, I have been at home as the market is closed," said Afkari, a father of four.

"I buy and sell fruits the same day. I have a limited amount to run my business. If I continue to stay home for some more days, that money will be exhausted and I will have no resources to continue my business, which is my only source of income."

"I request the government and the charities to remember us in this difficult time. Like other poor Pakistanis, we too need their help in this critical time when the whole city is closed and we have no other source to arrange food for our families," he said.

No Discrimination

The Pakistani government has requested the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) to contribute to rationing for the Afghan refugees, particularly those living in 52 shelter camps across the country.

"It is earnestly requested that keeping in view of our national policies and our commitment to Afghan refugees, the provisioning for essential rations/food supplies during the lockdown period be arranged on an urgent basis," Shehryar Afridi, the state minister for border affairs, said in a letter to the UNHCR.

Afridi, with the help of the Shahid Afridi Foundation -- an NGO run by cricket star Shahid Afridi -- is distributing rations among the Afghan refugees in different parts of the country.

"Pakistan is playing a role, but this is a gigantic challenge to provide food and rations to the refugees. It is high time for the UN and the prosperous world to come forward to meet the food and other requirements of Afghan refugees, whose majority is daily wagers," Afridi told Anadolu Agency.

"Around 80% of the world's total refugees are being hosted by countries like Turkey, Pakistan, Iran and Bangladesh," Afridi noted.

"Now it's the duty of the prosperous First World to join hands with us to meet their basic requirements at this critical juncture."

He said Prime Minister Imran Khan had directed the authorities concerned to come up with an exclusive relief package for the Afghan refugees in Pakistan.

Iain Hall, the UNHCR’s deputy representative in Pakistan, said the agency was in contact with all of the relevant ministries to provide assistance regarding health, water and sanitation and risk communication to the Afghan refugees in this trying time.

He acknowledged that the agency was not providing rations to the Afghan refugees but had dispatched medical supplies and sanitation products in support of refugees and host communities across the country.

"We are in constant contact with the government and doing whatever we can to support the government's response to the COVID-19 pandemic," Hall told Anadolu Agency.

He said neither the government nor the agency had "prioritized" any section of Pakistani society to provide aid.

"All the people in Pakistani society, including the Afghan refugees, are equal to us. There is no discrimination either from our part or from the government," he said, adding the agency had recently donated five ambulances to the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government to support its fight against the coronavirus outbreak.

Abdullah, the refugees' leader, however, accused the UNHCR and other International bodies of not taking the issue seriously.

"I personally contacted the UNHCR people in Islamabad, who said they are looking into the matter."

"I asked (them) how long would they continue to just look into the matter. Until everything will be finished?"

130 people have now recovered from coronavirus in Pakistan

Four more people have recovered from coronavirus in Pakistan now.

The national coronavirus portal reports that the number of recoveries now stands at 130.

The Islamabad High Court has given a nod to turning three- and four-star hotels into ‘quarantine centres’ where the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has planned to keep coronavirus patients.

Last month the NDMA had proposed to the government that the hotels in all major cities across Pakistan be converted into quarantine centres for suspected and confirmed coronavirus cases. Later with the federal government consent, the NDMA also issued directives to the management of different hotels on March 16 and March 28, to vacate the premises for the purpose.

The NDMA order to vacate the hotels was however challenged by three-star Hotel Margalla, situated in Islamabad.

Google's extensive data collection can finally be of some use for the public general.

This is the data for Pakistan displying the change in mobility in past few days due measures taken for coronavirus.

What are people doing still hanging out in Parks that something that can easily be controlled and need to drop to -80% at least.

https://www.google.com/covid19/mobility/

So we are assuming the majority of 200 million Pakistanis have smart phones, google accounts and location history turned on? This really doesn't mean much as the sample is based on a very small part of the population and skewed towards the higher socioeconomic classes who would have curtailed their mobility regardless of enforced lockdowns.

Imran can't don't do jack shyte when we have such a Jahil Awaam

Cant really blame these people. Years of neglect and corruption by the powers that be (and not just the political ones) have turned Pakistan into a demographic powder keg. When education is sacrificed in favor of organized and politicized religion and the population is allowed to grow unchecked at the behest of these same politico-religious power-brokers, logic and reason are bound to be the first casualties in times of uncertainty. This pandemic can be a warning or a disaster depending on how long it lasts and how intense it becomes. I hope it's the former and that we pay heed to it, else we will just be delaying the inevitable.

I think our young population has to do with that.
I think we'll be alright hopefully

The weather has an influence as well. Pakistan is around 30c in most places so that definitely helps.

However the Pakistani population can't be fooled as well as the western countries. In the west they've told people to stay at home and not question anything and most people including me are complying. In Pakistan and other countries with poorer populations, you'd need the army involved if you want to lock down for much longer and there are huge chances of riots.

This means that there is one ventilator per 300,000 people. Sixteen of Sindh’s 29 districts, including Mirpurkhas, Tharparkar, Umerkot, Ghotki, Badin, Sujawal, Kashmore and Sanghar have no ventilators at all, according to the Sindh health department.

The highest number can be found in Khairpur where there are 37 ventilators for its population of 2.4 million.

Even in the densely populated city of Karachi, there’s an acute shortage of the lifesaving medical equipment. Karachi’s districts East, West, Central and Korangi have zero ventilators.

District South, with a population of 1.7 million, has 24 ventilators. Malir’s 2.4 million has only nine ventilators.

“We have ordered 300 ventilators,” said Media Coordinator to the Health Minister Meeran Yusuf. The health department’s annual budget is around Rs120 billion.

Dude, they are following the advice by having too close social distancing, LOL.....in Pakistan everything works in the reverse order. Thanks God, Policemen were educated ones as they were wearing masks hopefully they did not get the virus from the threatening crowd.
Man, life is really tough in Pakistan. Even if God sends a new prophet in this day and age, when he looks at the behavior of such crowd, he will pray to abstain from such crowd.
beating your own countrymen for following the order of their government. Seriously, no wonder when people hear the word PAKISTAN, they never ask any other QUESTIONS

PESHAWAR: The Hayatabad Medical Complex, Peshawar, a public sector medical teaching institution, is awaiting the government’s approval of the Provincial Plasma Immunisation Committee to ensure the treatment of the critically-ill Covid-19 patients by passive immunisation method.

The National Bioethics Committee on Friday approved passive immunisation trial by the HMC but the provincial government’s formal nod is required for the start of work for the treatment of coronavirus patients by plasma taken from confirmed patients, who have completely recovered from the virus.

The experts said the treatment of confirmed cases by passive immunisation would begin soon after the committee was approved.

The HMC signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the National Institute of Blood Diseases (NIBD), Karachi, on Wednesday but the provincial government has yet to approve the proposed committee for which names were sent to the health secretary on March 28.

Govt nod for plasma immunisation panel awaited for treatment of Covid-19 patients

“The province has recorded 311 coronavirus cases and nine deaths, while there is a rapid progression of patients, so it is urgent on part of the government to notify the committee as the province will need treatment of the patients, which is possible through plasma,” physicians and hematologists told Dawn.

They said it was a big achievement of the HMC that its nominated committee had been approved at the national level to pursue the objectives in collaboration with NIBD, Karachi.

The MoU said it set forth the continuation of understandings among the named parties to pursue experimental use of convalescent plasma in treating critically-ill Covid-19 patients.

According to it, its primary purpose is to ensure treatment only in the ongoing crisis and doesn’t represent any commitment on behalf of either party to pursue other projects or partnerships.

The MoU outlined the scope of coordination and said both institutions would mutually develop and follow uniform SOPs for collection, storage and usage of convalescent plasma in the treatment of Covid-19 patients and will carry out together experimental use of convalescent plasma as a mean of passive immunisation for the same purpose.

“To strengthen data collection about the prevalence of the pandemic and other information to ensure that the purpose of the partnership is achieved, both sides will maintain ongoing communication and circulate essential information on a regular basis,” it said.

According to the MoU signed by NIBD’s Prof Tahir Shamsi and HMC medical director Prof Shehzad Akbar Khan, there will no discrimination and the two institutions shall agree that no person on the basis of race, color, nationality, origin, gender, sexual orientation or creed be excluded from participation under the terms of the agreement.

The HMC had requested the government to approve a five-member committee in accordance with a proposal made by chairman of the National Passive Immunisation Committee at the NIBD Prof Tahir Shamsi. However, it can begin work only after the proposed committee led by Prof Shah Taj Khan of the HMC’s hematology department is notified by the government.

Such committees have already been formed in Sindh and Punjab with the view to pave the way for the use of plasma from confirmed coronavirus cases after complete recovery for the treatment of infected patients.

Desperate generalization.

Some people believe in media too much, knowing well that Media is basically a one sided debate. Life is not tough as portrayed by media. Calm down.

It is only supposed to be a quick and free source of insight and a very rough presention. While the data doesn't take into account each any every individual it still is a good tool to utilize. It is not supposed substitute observing and analyzing the situation on the ground by the authorities.

Unfortunately Google didn't provide details like what's the number of smartphone users analyzed. The only thing it says is that the number is large enough to be statistically relevant.

I think the data includes a bigger part of population than just the elite and high class. I don't see why a significant percentage of lower middle class isn't likely to be part of the data collected. Smartphones are a lot common in Pakistan than one might assume. I have seen plenty of rickshaw drivers and villagers own one. You don't have to own a high end iPhone.

According to PTA there are 76 million 3G/4G subscribers which can be a good estimate of number of smartphone users in Pakistan. https://www.pta.gov.pk/en/telecom-indicators

Irrespective of the socioeconomic background of the population represented only a 45% decrease in activities in parks is concerning and should be looked into. It's even worse if the data mainly represents high earning people who have very few excuses for not staying at home.

I have my doubts. Mostly because you have to have a smartphone and google account and then manually turn on the location history setting for this to work. By default the option is turned off.

Also perhaps depends on how accurate the maps are. I really can't believe that the change in residential percentage is a mere 18% in a lockdown.

168 Tableeghi Jamaat marakiz in Sindh turned into quarantine centres

The Sindh Police along with district administrations have turned Tableeghi Jamaat centres across Sindh into quarantine centres where thousands of preachers have been isolated to prevent the spread of Covid-19.

A total of 168 Jamaat marakiz have been declared quarantine centres where an estimated 4,107 people have been isolated, a police spokesperson said.

They added that police are providing "decent meals" to the preachers at these quarantine centres.

Pakistan to temporarily open borders to allow Afghan nationals to leave

At the request of the Afghan government and based on humanitarian considerations, Pakistan has decided to allow Afghan nationals currently in Pakistan to return to their country, the Foreign Office said.

The Torkham and Chaman border crossings will be opened for a specific period from April 6 to April 9 to facilitate the Afghan nationals' exit, the statement added.

Cases steadily rising we will top 3000 by Monday. Thankfully by grace of God we haven't seen exponential growth but still we are getting a steady stream of new cases.

It is exponential/will be soon, just not really visible. It will grow rapidly unless they have really gotten a hold of the situation, which I hope is the case but I doubt it.

Even the government is looking at 50,000 cases by 25th April.

What we should hope for is:

1- Summer slows it down.

2- We have amped up out testing abilities by then, we need to be doing 50,000 to 1,00,000 per day. I know it sounds absurd given our resources and condition, but we have to, if we want to get a hold of it.

3- Lockdown areas where there is even a hint of spread, which they are doing and well at that.

4- Monitor Intercity and international travel, the later we have to be extremely hard, no entries allowed unless you want quarantine for as long as your test results are back.

5- Exercise as much social distancing as possible.

6- The treatments under trail show promise. This would be good news for the whole world. There are some approved drugs being tested and hopefully they are effective.

2 is the most important on this list. If we fail there, barring a miracle, we won't be able to contain this.

I still hope you are right and it stays linear till we get it under control.

It makes sense to doubt it since it's unknown what the actual figures are. I also think that most probably Google must have some backdoors to gather data and can't publicly acknowledge them. Anybody with an android has a Google account otherwise you can't access Google play store.

The change in residential percentage needs to be interpreted as the increase in movement at home. Since even under normal circumstances people spend a lot of time at home you can't expect it to be a lot higher. Italy with their radical lockdown has +24% change in residential while Spain has +22% and Germany has +11%. Pakistan's +18% isn't too low or an outlier. It's is actually pretty good and is in the expected interval.

As long as strict social distancing isn't been practiced by people the virus will spread exponentially. It the mathematical model on how viruses spread and endemic develops. If we aren't seeing an exponentiall growth it only means we aren't trsting enough.

USA didn't see any exponential growth until they started testing.

I am saying this so that we don't start to panic once the numbers start to reflect the reality once testing intensity is increased. We should all be mentally prepared and expect the actual figure to be at least around 5k at the moment.

I think for Pakistanis it would be very difficult to pull off any visas to developed countries if they dont do practice social distancing. They are harming their own chances. They are projecting a very negative image of being an irresponsible nation. It is a bit off topic but videos such as these like beating police men and more susceptible to spreading virus exponentially and it sends a very negative image of the country in the outside world.

I urge our Indian friends to post things from more authentic sources than Major Gaurav, alleged Imam of Peace, or Republic TV if they want to find anything out about Pakistan, or post updates here.

And no, "NBTV92" is not a legitimate Pakistani channel.

Doctors feel wronged as govt deducts 10pc of their salaries for COVID-19 fund

Instead of providing any health risk allowance or other benefits to the doctors who have been risking their lives while serving at the public hospitals in Sindh during the pandemic, the provincial health department has deducted 10 per cent of their salaries, The News has learnt.

The situation is more or less same at many private health facilities where their administration have started to deduct some amount from the salaries of their doctors and paramedical staff to cover their revenue losses during the coronavirus outbreak.

“They have deducted 10 per cent amount from my salary of March 2020 and this deduction has been carried out for the coronavirus fund. We are the front line force against the pandemic and instead of paying us a risk allowance, they have started deducting our salaries, which is inhuman,” said Dr Omar Sultan, the Young Doctors Association (YDA) Sindh chairman, as he spoke to The News on Friday.

Dr Sultan said that on the one hand, hundreds of doctors were forced to work for days and nights without any rest and without personal protective equipment (PPE) at wards and emergencies and on the other hand, they were being deprived of their salaries, which was highly condemnable and a shameful act of the provincial health department.

He further claimed that hundreds of postgraduate students (PGs) and house officers, who are the backbone of the healthcare system in the country, were also not being paid their stipends by the government for the last several months and many young doctors were unable to come to hospitals due to lack of money for transportation.

When contacted, a spokesperson for the health department told The News that the cut in the salaries of doctors was an unintended consequence of the government decision to slash the salaries of all the government officials as well as the MPAs to meet the revenue shortfall.

The spokesperson said the provincial government valued the services being rendered by the doctors and paramedical staff during the coronavirus pandemic and was considering giving them a health risk allowance.

Meanwhile, some private health facilities have also started deducting salaries of their healthcare staff on the pretext of covering their revenue losses. This act by the private health facilities’ management has been causing extreme resentment and anxiety among healthcare workers in the private sector.

“Our hospital asked us to work alternatively following the coronavirus outbreak in Pakistan and we thought they were concerned about our safety. But when we got our pay cheques, there was almost a 50 per cent deduction. When we inquired, they said as we had worked for very few days, we would be paid accordingly,” said a paramedic working at a major private hospital in Gulshan-e-Iqbal.

The administration of such private hospitals are of the view that they had been losing revenue due to the coronavirus outbreak as patients were not visiting the healthcare facilities due to fear. They added that when the situation would improve, they would compensate their workers normally.

Condemning the situation, the Pakistan Islamic Medication Association (PIMA) expressed concern over the 10 per cent deduction from the salaries of the healthcare providers by the provincial government, who are fighting as front line workers against coronavirus, saying that Punjab and other provincial governments had announced an additional one-month salary for their doctors.

In a statement, PIMA Karachi President Dr Azeemuddin demanded the immediate release of salaries and stipends of house officers and postgraduate students and warned that if the proper and standard protection was not provided to these courageous soldiers, the health system would collapse.

PIMA also stressed the provision of basic PPE in primary, secondary and tertiary healthcare facilities where doctors were working without even basic protection.

The Islamic medical association emphasised that only ‘salutes’ were not enough for the doctors. It was the state's responsibility to protect its front line fighters but it seemed that red tape was still obstructing the supply of mandatory equipment even in this situation of national emergency.

PIMA also condemned the private hospitals and medical centres that were deducting salaries of their staff with the excuse of lowered workload and lesser income.

These private healthcare facilities should avoid such indecent policies in this hour of need, the association said, urging the government to take strict notice of such malpractices.

PIMA said it had already started a free telemedicine programme by the name of ‘PIMA healthline’ in order to address the basic health issues of general population across the country. Around 150 consultants of different health specialisations are available online for free medical advice under the programme.

It can taken 10-20 days after the initial symptoms first show up till death. Disease entered Pakistan later than other countries. It was like China - > Iran/Europe -> a Pakistan.

In general we don't know what the mortality rate in Pakistan is going to be since 90% of the death in Italy are 70years or older so while 50% are older than 80. Let's hope Pakistans young population has a positive effect.

can you really believe about the FIR though? Why would someone who had done such a coward act come out and do suicide in open instead of fleeing the system? His suicide in front of PM office suggests there was lack of justice to his case.

Punjab's cases reach 1,196 of which 220 are in Lahore

According to Punjab health department spokesperson Qaiser Asif, the total number of confirmed Covid-19 cases in the province have reached 1,196.

Of those 1,196, 537 were local transmissions, 312 from zaireen centres across the province and 347 were associated with the Tableeghi Jamaat.

Among the zaireen, 213 were in Dera Ghazi Khan, 91 in Multan, 5 in Faisalabad.

Among the preachers from Tableeghi Jamaat, 303 were part of Raiwind Markaz, 3 from Mandi Bahauddin, Sargodha 13, Vihari 13, Rawalpindi 6, Nankana 2, Gujrat 5 and 2 are from Rahimyar Khan.

The spokesman added that Lahore's 220 confirmed cases were highest in the province thus far.

Balochistan's total rises to 189

The total number of cases in Balochistan have increased to 189, said provincial government spokesperson Liaqat Shahwani.

He stated that the patients were being transferred to a hospital. "So far, 32 patients in the province have recovered from the disease and have been discharged from the hospital," he added.
