Coronavirus in Pakistan

https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/ is now also providing information about number of patients who are in critical condition.

Pakistan has 18 out of 3'123 confirmed cases in critical condition. That's 0.6%.

Let's see how this develops. In USA, Italy, Spain and German the ratio is between 2-5%

Fear grips health workers as doctor tested positive for Covid-19 put on ventilator in Karachi

KARACHI: Fear and anxiety gripped health workers on Saturday when a senior doctor, who was active on the front line ever since the first case of coronavirus was reported and last week tested positive for Covid-19, was put on a ventilator after his condition deteriorated.

He was a former medical officer of the Pakistan Steel Mills and was tested positive for the virus earlier this week, health officials said and added that he was respected in the medical fraternity for his growing medical practice in different private facilities of Malir.

“He has a very good practice in Gulshan-i-Hadeed where hundreds of patients visit him daily in different hospitals,” said Dr Abdul Malik of the Pakistan Islamic Medical Association (Pima). The doctor in question was also a former Sindh president of the association.

“Apart from his professional skills in health sciences, he is known as a socially active person in his district where people even from rural parts of the province came to see him. He was vigorously calling for PPE [personal protective equipment]. He tested positive because he was treating patients without PPE to honour the oath he had taken that he would not deny anyone care.”

‘A wake-up call’

According to Dr Malik, the senior doctor was in his early 60s and battling for life on a ventilator at the Indus Hospital. The situation should be a wake-up call for authorities and they should speed up distribution of PPE among health professional and workers across the province, he added.

As the number of confirmed coronavirus patients continues to grow with most becoming victims of local virus transmission, the health workers have been increasingly more exposed to the threat as in just a week almost a dozen members of the medical fraternity in Karachi tested positive for the pandemic.

According to doctors, they are facing a lot of problems at work, severely affecting their mental health as well as the quality of work.

Govt urged to provide PPE

The worst-hit health facilities include government hospitals in Sukkur and Larkana, the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital (ASH), the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) and two teaching hospitals, one in Hyderabad and the other in Jamshoro, attached with the Liaquat University of Medical and Health Sciences (LUMHS).

The situation once again triggered fear among doctors, who keep on demanding immediate PPE supply.

“Not only from Karachi, we have been approached by doctors from every parts of the country who want PMA [Pakistan Medical Association] to play its role and talk to the government for PPE,” said Dr Qaiser Sajjad of the PMA. “I believe that the health workers are doing a great service but they also need protection. I appeal to both the provincial and federal governments to provide these workers PPE who are exposed to the virus due to their professional contribution.”

An official said that Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah had informed Prime Minister Imran Khan during a meeting he participated in via video link that the province was facing serious shortage of PPE.

Also, the testing kits provided by the Provincial Disaster Management Authority had “accuracy issues”, which was why Sindh had opted not to use them, said the official quoting CM Shah’s concerns.

Biggest jump today. Doesn't say much at this point, it will take another couple of weeks to see the effects of the lockdown.

And please, please keep these tableegi jammat people under check, by force if necessary. It's not about them alone, it's about the whole nation which will suffer due their ignorance and stupidity.

Patients in Karachi showing mild or no symptoms to be quarantined at Expo Centre

The Sindh Health Department has informed the district health officers in Karachi that Covid-19 patients, who are asymptomatic or have mild symptoms, will be moved to the Expo Centre, which has been turned into a field hospital.

Patients with "moderate or severe symptoms", however, would be kept in isolation wards in hospitals.

These TJ mullahs are the reason we are seeing this recent spike. Cases in local transmission and Iran zaireen have slowed down quite a bit. We can thank these TJ guys for spreading the virus.

Good thing is provincial governments have quarantined them inside the TJ marakez themselves.

That's dangerous...It may spread to many in quarantine like what happened in taftaan. These TJ guys are not following proper rules already.

I wonder if the theory and hypothesis that this virus is ineffective in warmer climates or that the subcontinent people have superior immune systems to the goras correct for e.g. desi's don't get sick that easily from eating foods outside in comparison to goras in the subcontinent

Chinese experts for extending lockdown by 28 days in Punjab

LAHORE: The Chinese doctors currently visiting Lahore have suggested to the Punjab government to extend the current lockdown for 28 days to save the province from Covid-19 havoc and later gradually and cautiously start lifting restrictions while taking the conditions into account.

Chinese delegation leader Dr Maming Hoi busted the myth that the coronavirus would fade away with the advent of summer, saying, “the possibility of spread of the coronavirus in hot weather cannot be ruled out and ignored”.

Chief Justice of Pakistan Gulzar Ahmed has berated the government's efforts to combat the novel coronavirus, saying that "nothing is being done on ground".

While hearing an appeal against Islamabad High Court's verdict regarding the release of under-trial prisoners due to the coronavirus outbreak, the chief justice said that the government had closed OPDs of all hospitals, leaving no place for patients to seek treatment.

"Hospitals have been closed when we need them. Up till now, 10 hospitals with 1,000 beds each should have been made operational.

"Everyone is talking about funds, no one is doing anything. The public has been left at the mercy of God," he remarked. The chief justice also criticised government's efforts to encourage people to stay indoors in order to curb the spread of the disease.

CJP living in his own world.

The title is nowhere to be found in the news.

He addressed the issue of not taking steps toward hospitals and more beds as numbers are expected to pile up which in my opinion, is a valid concern for the people.

It's not a title, it's a paragraph I am highlighting from the linked article.

CJP Gulzar has a bit of a reputation for being... concerned... about being in the headlines. He also criticized Zafar Mirza's qualifications, when he's one of the most qualified people there can be to deal with the current situation.

Most people realize that the provincial governments, at least, have done pretty much all they can.

To say that "nothing is being done on the ground" is nothing short of ludicrous. Perhaps he isn't aware of the ground realities.

I stand corrected. Thanks for pointing that out.

But just one query, it is written in passive while others are direct quotes. Couldn't it be a factor that meaning may change in translation? Because 90% of the article points to one direction and 10% in totally opposite direction.

DUBAI: More than 20,000 Pakistani workers stuck in the United Arab Emirates are seeking to return home, as the Gulf Arab state tightens restrictions due to the coronavirus outbreak.

The UAE, which has reported 1,799 coronavirus cases and 10 deaths, has gradually increased curbs, including imposing a nationwide curfew, suspending passenger flights and putting Dubai in a lockdown.

A densely populated Dubai neighbourhood where many South Asian blue-collar workers live has been sealed off since March 31, and there has been door-to-door coronavirus testing in some parts of the emirate.

Over 20,000 Pakistanis had registered since April 3 with the consulate to go home, a consulate spokesman told Reuters on Monday.

Also read: Coronavirus updates, April 6: Latest news on the COVID-19 pandemic from Pakistan and around the world

Those who had registered included some whose visas had expired, who had lost their jobs or stopped being paid by their employer as well as those who entered the country on visitor visas, he said.

Pakistan is a big labour supplier to the UAE, with more than a million Pakistanis living and working in the country, according to Pakistani diplomats.

Pakistani authorities were in talks with their UAE counterparts to try to arrange flights so that the Pakistanis could return home, the spokesman said.

Government media offices for the UAE and Dubai did not immediately respond to emailed requests for comment.

The UAE suspended all passenger flights last month, though this week airlines Emirates and Etihad said they were resuming some outbound-only services to limited destinations for those wishing to leave the UAE.

Neither airline has announced flights to Pakistan.

Hundreds of Pakistanis gathered outside the consulate on Sunday, despite the emirate-wide lockdown, demanding to be sent home, Dubai's Gulf News newspaper reported on Monday.

The consulate spokesman disputed the figure and said police had dispersed the group as they were in breach of the lockdown.

166 people arrested in Sindh for violating Section 144 of CrPC

Sindh police claimed to have arrested 166 people for violating Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure.

The charges against the arrested also include hoarding of masks and sanistisers.

According to police, a total of 1,464 people have been arrested in the province for violating Section 144 since March 23, when the Sindh government imposed the ongoing lockdown.

This is getting out of hand. Hopefully this is the influx from weeks before and the lockdown shows in the next couple of week. Otherwise I don't know how we will cope.

The latest peak of upto 397, is it localized or spreaded over the whole country? Any data available province wise?

Is there any info available on what type of people are being tested? I think for the most part they either have travel history or are from Tableeghi Jamat, right?

For example in most European countries due to limited number of test kits priority is given to people of 65+ age and breathing problem. Not everyone who shows up with flu symptoms is also getting tested.

I don't think that's the case in Pakistan. If a vast majority of positive tested have only mild symptoms then there is not much to worry about.

Pakistan's biggest issue is that people can't be trusted to self-isolate and require a hospital or government organized quarantine, even though they only have mild symptoms. Which is sad and unnecessary waste of resources. In other part of the world only people with severe symptoms are getting hospitalized. Public can't complain to authorities all the time when they themselves have no sense of responsibility and behave like children.

Even if there is a strict lock down for over a month, sooner or later it has to be lifted while the virus is still there and this is why a mature behavior from the public is necessary.

Out of these 397 yesterday, 330 were in Punjab.

Total number of cases in Punjab till yesterday were 1493. 309 of those are Zaireen and 484 are TJ.

Number of recovered people doubled in one day.... total recovered upto 257 until latest updates. Just like cases grow exponentially, recoveries should also follow a similar pattern, hopefully.

Why it’s going up and down that drastically?

It tells you the number of cases each day, so its expected as some days will have more cases, some less. The drastic fluctuations are due to the fact that when we are looking at the data for each day, its too small an interval size. Hourly data would have even more fluctuations.

What you can do is draw a best fit curve or look at weekly numbers. You will see an exponential behavior in both cases, which is again an expected trend in modeling disease spread.

Data wise this and next week are crucial. We should see something to account for the lockdown, next week in particular. The effects of a lockdown a re generally 3-4 weeks behind. The data to look at would be the rate of increase of daily infections, that's the number you want to slow down. So far it's increasing.

If we don't, we are in trouble and it mean we have to take stricter measures. I am hoping it doesn't come to that and we reach peek infections in about 2-3 weeks.

covid.gov.pk has all the data.

We are testing so little that it's hard to say. I think it's spread all over the country. The majority of the cases even at this point are I think from those in quarantine and the tableegi jammat.

just wait and see, yesterday so many people gathered in front of governor house and today young doctors were together. Coming weeks will be tough since our people are not following any instructions.
This nation will not change whether it is educated people or none educated.

Yes, travel history or contact. Symptoms too in some cases.

For example in most European countries due to limited number of test kits priority is given to people of 65+ age and breathing problem. Not everyone who shows up with flu symptoms is also getting tested.

That's the wrong way to go about it, I think. More studies are showing that if you hit it early you have a better chance. We don't know which cases will progress to ADRS/cause a cykotine storm.

I don't think that's the case in Pakistan. If a vast majority of positive tested have only mild symptoms then there is not much to worry about.

I would like if you can into some more detail here. Why is it good?

Pakistan's biggest issue is that people can't be trusted to self-isolate and require a hospital or government organized quarantine, even though they only have mild symptoms. Which is sad and unnecessary waste of resources. In other part of the world only people with severe symptoms are getting hospitalized. Public can't complain to authorities all the time when they themselves have no sense of responsibility and behave like children.

The quarantine approach I think is good. That's what China did. The reason is two folds, a) you can monitor the cases closely and b) as you say we can't expect the population to do this themselves.

Even if there is a strict lock down for over a month, sooner or later it has to be lifted while the virus is still there and this is why a mature behavior from the public is necessary.

True, again. But what is the solution. I think we need to do the following:

1- Mass public awareness campaign. It might have some benefit, anything is good.

2- Increase our daily testing ability. We have to, other wise we are sitting ducks. (Go up to 100,000 or so. It sounds outlandish but we have too. I don't know how we do it)

3- Follow the isolate and lockdown communities that test positive model even more. This has worked in Vietnam, China etc.

4- Extend the lockdown till May atleast. Again sounds hard but we have too. The peak expected is end April. We can't open again at peak.

What is Pakistans daily testing capabilities? Are they increasing? Are they buying more testing kits? Are they making their own?

These are the most important questions.

COVID-19: Police arrest 218 more for violation of lockdown in Sindh

KARACHI: As coronavirus lockdown in the Sindh province entered its 16th day on Tuesday, the provincial authorities have apprehended 218 more people and registered 71 cases against the violators today, ARY NEWS reported.

According to details, during the entire period of lockdown, overall 3700 people had been arrested and 1018 cases registered against them.

“49 people were held in Karachi today and booked under 49 new cases,” the police authorities said adding that 13 people were arrested in Hyderabad and 50 people were nabbed in Sukkur.

At least 9 violators of lockdown were taken into custody by police in Larkana and 4 cases were registered against them.

It must be noted that under a lockdown there is a complete ban on public movement, social and religious gatherings across the province under the Sindh Epidemic Diseases Act 2014 in view of the increase in the number of coronavirus cases.

With 50 new cases of the novel coronavirus in the last 24 hours, Sindh’s tally has jumped to 932, thus so far.

According to the health department’s latest report, the province has saw 17 deaths and 253 have recovered their lives.

As per breakup, 15 of the deceased were from Karachi and 2 deaths were reported in Hyderabad, the health department said.

Overall Sindh has conducted coronavirus tests of 9713 out of which 932 came out positive. As many as 662 people are under treatment in the various hospitals of the province.

It is a genuine concern! If they recover then the total recovered cases will increase dramatically.

Some people here doesn’t take things seriously. If TJ are quarantined before lockdown then their contacts will be less but if they are quarantined after lockdown started then need more contact tracing.

People are getting too relaxed in Karachi...

Damn... that is a very steep rise in infection numbers

2 days ago there were 2816 cases and now 4004. Basically an increase of 1200 in 2 days. Does this signal that things are about to get serious in pak?

Pakistan would be able to conduct 25,000 tests per day by month's end: Asad Umar
Pakistan will be capable of conducting 25,000 tests per day by the end of this month, Planning Minister Asad Umar has said.

He said that last month, the country was struggling to conduct 1,000 tests in a day but the capacity was being increased.

The month's end seems like a million miles away at this point. Government's own modelling is showing cases to be 40-50k by May. I'm worried now.

They need testing kits now. Really shows that Pakistani capabilities when they cant produce testing kits themselves it seems. In that case, they need knowledge sharing with the Chinese so that these kits can be produced in mass. Pakistan can not wait till the end of April. Need some urgency!

I think indigenous testing kits are under trial. It should be noted that medical equipment approval takes weeks if not months because it is people's lives in question. I wouldn't want a situation where a positive patient comes out as negative due to faulty test and they go about spreading it to everyone.

We are not China where our people can be used as guinea pigs.

You don’t need Guinea pigs to develop corona kits..There will be enough samples to verify the kit capabilities.

I don't understand why not china is sharing knowledge with Pakistan about how to make kits fast, it is just a genuine question.

A couple of provinces that didn't have PTI governments were taking doctors PPE from federal government and then not giving to hospitals which is causing issues between federal government and medical staff. Now the federal government will issue PPEs directly to hospitals. As per Asad Umar.

Abdullah719 there might be some truth in what Dr. Zafar Mirza is saying because new cases came back down to around our daily average from a peak of approximately 600 yesterday.

Massive jump in recovered patients in the last couple of days. It jumped from 130odd to 260 odd and now today to 430. Inshallah long may this trend continue.

A lad from my gully, now made it big as a stand up comedian. His statuses and remarks are usually hilarious. Thought I'd share a laugh in these depressing times:

Stranded Afghans storm home through Pakistan border crossing

Afghans stranded in Pakistan by the virus shutdown stormed a border crossing after the lockdown on the border between the two countries was briefly lifted, AFP reports.

Thousands entered Afghanistan without being screened, sparking fears they may introduce more cases of the coronavirus into a war-weary country already overwhelmed by hundreds of thousands of migrants returning from hard-hit Iran.
