Coronavirus in Pakistan

Seems unlikely that they will achieve it... I think 15-20k is more realistic target.

Yes, hopefully they meet the 20ks target. How are people tested? Does anyone know? Is it random testing or testing of people with symptoms and the trace of people who have been in contact with COVID positive patients.

The later. We need random testing especially in Sindh and Punjab.

Also that 25 figure although an improvement is too less. With out peak expected in mid May, we need to be at as high as we can go by then.

So that we can do random sampling of the population. Hopefully Antibody tests will be available by then and some therapeutics that will help keep people of ventilators.

My hospital purchased Kits for Antibody Test but for now govt has banned antibody tests.
After one gets virus, It takes some days for Antibodies to appear in blood so there is this window of few days where one may have virus detectable in PCR but antibodies not detectable.

36 recoveries reported in Pakistan

Another 36 people in Pakistan have recovered from the coronavirus during the last 24 hours, according to the government's official portal for tracking the spread of the disease in the country, taking the total to 1,868.

They aren't that accurate yet so maybe that's why?

True about it taking time for antibodies to appear, but they are useful in determining just how wide spread the infection really is by seeing how many undocumented cases have had the virus and recovered not to see if you have the infection currently.

Law ministry prepares ordinance to punish hoarders

Law Minister Farogh Naseem announced that the law ministry has prepared an ordinance on hoarding, on the instructions of Prime Minister Imran Khan, to curb the shortage of essentials during the coronavirus pandemic.

Speaking at a news conference in Islamabad, he said: "The ordinance has been sent to the premier. His office is vetting it at the moment. We will release it by Monday or Tuesday."

He added that under the new ordinance, smuggling and hoarding will now be criminal offences.

Pakistan is now able to produce masks, PPEs and export sanitisers, claims Fawad Chaudhry

Federal Minister for Science and Technology Fawad Chaudhry said on Twitter that the Pakistani nation should be proud of the efforts of its organisations and professionals during the ongoing pandemic.

He claimed that the country could now produce its own masks and personal protective equipment and is able to export sanitisers.

He added that both testing kits and ventilators were in the final stage of trials.

Today testing was highest it has ever been and was just shy of 8000 tests, yet number of new cases was lower than last 3-4 days.

ISLAMABAD: Minister for Law and Justice Farogh Naseem on Sunday said that smuggling or hoarding essential items will be considered a criminal offence and those found guilty would face severe punishment for their crimes.

"No one would be allowed to take advantage of the situation in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak in the country," he vowed.

His remarks came as he announced the promulgation of an ordinance against the hoarding and smuggling of essential commodities amid the pandemic.

The new ordinance contains a three-year sentence, summary trial and confiscation of the material if one is found guilty of hoarding wheat, sugar, flour, ghee, sanitisers, face masks and other essential items.

The minister said that the government had also prepared an Anti-Smuggling Ordinance to stop the smuggling of dollars and essential commodities like wheat and sugar through undeclared routes.

The ordinance has been sent to the office of the prime minister for vetting and is likely to be promulgated by Monday or Tuesday, he said.

He said that although the customs department would be a focal department to stop this practice, Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) would be authorised to dedicate powers to any state institution like Intelligence Bureau (IB), Inter Services Intelligence Bureau (ISI), and Military Intelligence (MI), to seek their assistance against smuggling.

The federal minister said that district administrations had also been instructed to share information pertaining to any act of smuggling or hoarding with relevant institutions so prompt action may be taken against such activities.

"A copy of this information would also be sent to secretary law and justice who will view the actions taken by the department concerned," he said.

Stern action, he said, would also be taken against officers for any negligence in the matter.

The minister said that the Ordinance is subject to revision in extraordinary situations, if necessary.

The minister said that a summary trial against the culprits would be initiated in accordance with the law, adding that the judges for the summary trial would be appointed with the consultation of the chief justice of Pakistan

Naseem said that the law ministry had resolved a total of 60,649 cases over 20 months which was a clearance ratio of 99%.

His ministry had been working "round the clock over the last several days" to prepare ordinances against hoarding and smuggling, he said.

Speaking on the occasion, Parliamentary Secretary for Law and Justice Mulaeka Bokhari said that these laws were manifestation of the vision of Prime Minister Imran Khan and fulfilment of the PTI’s manifesto.

She said the anti-hoarding and anti-smuggling laws would provide relief to the common people and safeguard their interests.

Dozens of workers at Afghanistan's presidential palace have tested positive for coronavirus, according to media reports.

Twenty cases were initially reported, but on Sunday the New York Times said the number had risen to 40.

The Afghan government has not commented and there's no suggestion that President Ashraf Ghani - who reportedly lost part of his stomach to cancer in the 1990s - has been infected.

There have been fewer than 1,000 confirmed cases of the virus in Afghanistan and 33 people have died.

But the true number could be much higher as the country has limited access to testing and the health system has suffered under decades of conflict.

There are also fears that the virus could have spread after more than 150,000 Afghans returned from virus-stricken Iran during March, while tens of thousands of others returned from Pakistan.

Despite rapidly rising rate of testing our new cases seems to be stabilizing. Inshallah may the trend continue and eventually taper off. If you curse and abuse IK and his government when they mess up, then atleast be man enough to commend them when they do well.

For last 10 days PPP was chanting 8-Billion PKR aid package distributed among poors of Sindh.
When Supreme Court asked, "8-Billion Aid" figure suddenly shrinked to "1-Billion Aid".

If not for SC, extra 7-Billions would have landed in Fake Accounts.

Pakistan's government has said is aiming to move towards "smart lockdowns" as opposed to the current countrywide restrictions on public movement and gatherings, as the country's coronavirus outbreak saw cases cross 8,000 on Sunday.

Moeed Yusuf, the Pakistani prime minister's advisor on national security, told reporters that the government wanted to trace and isolate specific areas where the virus had spread by increasing testing capacity and deploying tests in a targeted manner.

"As this testing capacity will be increased, this will enable us to know where the virus has spread so that we can go towards 'smart lockdowns' or 'smart restrictions', not to shut down the whole country," he said. "We should only shut down those areas where the virus has spread and then manage and treat that, get people healthy again, and allow regular life to resume slowly in the rest of the country."

Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan has repeatedly warned of the economic risks of a full countrywide shutdown of the economy, which has already led to spiralling unemployment in the South Asian country, where many work for daily wages or in other ways that are outside of the formal economy.

based on imran khans latest info, the govt has managed to delay the pressure and peak for another four weeks. they are now expecting a peak near the end of May. This may happen or may not but Inshallah they keep managing to delay things until a vaccine can be created and the virus brought under control.

IA it doesnt come but if it came in Europe and America, it will come in PK. Quite simply, most PKs are too contrarian(to put it mildly) to believe anything told to them.

They know they would fall flat on their faces. The Sindh govt is so corrupt that it couldnt organise a pissup in a brewery. The CV has shown up( if you didnt know already) the badniyaati of both opposition parties and their paid mouth pieces in the media. They are quite literally praying for 1000s of deaths.

The vaccine will take time; we can just hope that there in no mass exponential growth in Pakistan.

yes true. The longer they can delay the better. And if they can add to health capacity in the meantime it will leave them in goodstead for the future national health service that i envision will come out of this crisis.

This is a serious situation since Karachi is a hub for economic activity and now government is relaxing lockdowns and this happens.

Pakistan's Covid-19 recoveries surpass 2,000

With another 96 Covid-19 recoveries reported during the past 24 hours, the total number of recovered patients has surpassed 2,000.

According to the government's official portal for tracking the spread of the disease in the country, 2,066 people have recovered from the coronavirus in Pakistan so far.

ISLAMABAD: As the number of coronavirus cases surged past 8,500 with the addition of 425 new cases and the toll hitting 192 with 24 deaths on Monday, diplomats visited the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC) to observe the countrywide arrangements to control the deadly virus.

“During a briefing, we informed about our strategy, structure, etc. Diplo*mats asked a number of questions about the working of NCOC. They were also informed that the issue was taken up at the level of National Security Commit*tee and it was decided to establish a National Coordi*nation Committee to take prompt decisions to combat the virus,” Special Assistant to Prime Minister (SAPM) on Health Dr Zafar Mirza said during a media briefing.

According to a statement, Federal Minister for Plan*ning, Development, Reforms and Special Initiatives Asad Umar briefed the visiting delegation on Covid-19 situation and its impact on various sectors of Pakistan and containment efforts made so far to mitigate the challenges and provision of best possible services to common people in line with Prime Minister’s vision.

Federal Minister for Economic Affairs Khusro Bakhtiar briefed the dignitaries about financial assistance extended by the World Bank, International Mone*tary Fund, Asian Develop*ment Bank and thanked the G-20 members for their assistance in grace period to focus on Covid-19 challenges.

The delegation comprising Dean of Diplomatic Corps, Diplomats and Defence Attaches of Australia, Canada, China, Cuba, Egypt, European Union, France, Germany, Italy, Japan Korea, Malaysia, Nigeria, Saudi Arabia, Switzerland, Turkey, Turkmenistan, Ukraine and the United Kingdom was earlier received by Lt Gen Hamooduz Zaman Khan.

Later, Dr Mirza told the media that some diplomats said they learnt a lot during their visit to the centre and also assured the government of their cooperation in the fight against Covid-19.

The PM’s aide was of the opinion that past investments in the polio programme proved beneficial for response against the virus.

While discussing the difficulties of people due to suspension of polio campaigns, routine immunisations and closure of the out-patient departments of hospitals, Dr Mirza said it was decided to start telemedicine across the country. This way, he said, “patients suffering with non-communicable diseases such as blood pressure, diabetes, etc will be able to get advice from heath practitioners through phone calls”.

He expressed the hope that Covid-19 would soon be eradicated from the world and claimed that the lessons being learnt during the current crisis would be used for addressing health-related issues in future.

About the fears of virus spread during Ramazan, Dr Mirza said the Ulema had agreed that they would ensure social distancing during prayers. He also pledged that it would be ensured that mosques would not become epidemic of the virus.

The PM’s aide said elderly and sick people should not go to mosques. Sharing statistics to prove his point, he said 82 per cent of Covid-19 patients who died in Pakistan aged over 50 years. “Moreover, 83pc of them were suffering with health complications such as diabetes, heart issues, cancer, etc,” he added.

Dr Mirza said 65pc cases were caused by local transmission.

However, deputy chairman of the Senate Saleem Mandviwalla said the Covid-19 situation was becoming complicated.

“I am concerned about such a huge number of cases. There is need to increase the coordination among federal and provincial governments,” he said.

Mr Mandviwalla appealed to the masses to adopt social distancing and follow the guideline of the World Health Organisation as precautionary measures were the only defence against the deadly contagion.

Quite alarming situation in the last five days ever since govt has eased some restrictions.

If you live in Pakistan or have beloved ones please ask them if there was a time to stay indoor it's now. Things have escalated.

deaths over 24 hrs is what you need to monitor. Cases could be of varying degrees. Look to see how many criticial? how many deaths? what is the spike in deaths?

if there is a spike in the critical cases data that is worrying as it will take up health facilities and resources. Expect testing to increase and cases to rise. If we can minimise deaths that will be the key.

you think 3000 all of them being local transmission in just 5 days is nothing to worry? It's Pakistan we are talking about. It will run out of resources pretty soon if local transmission keeps going at this rate.

i didnt say you dont need to worry. many may not need hospitalisation and can stay at home and recover. Others may get mild symptoms and can stay at home. Critical cases is where we need to worry because they will need ventilators and staff on call.

This is a difficult time for everyone but I think the country will come out of it stronger

Problem is, those with mild cases won't stay home and situation will escalate. Ramzan is coming up and everyone will flock to mosques for prayers.

he's explained it quite clearly. If there is no economic activity people would have come out anyway. Same with ramadhan. Better to puts some checks and balances in place and smart lockdowns. They now have enough capacity to deal with strategic lockdowns and flare ups.

But lets listen to the keyboard warriors who want to run a country from their living rooms.

it has doubled in just one week. Our leaders are still confused. They need economic activity when this virus was trying to find its feet in Pakistan. well done to all incompetent people leading us.

roothe bacho ko payar se samjhya jata hai na. You don't surrender knowing the dangers it can bring. IK and current regime has absolutely confused all this pandemic and took massive risk. Taking such decisions can make you look like brave or really dumb. Time is telling it's the later.

The Ramzan SOPs is one of the most stupid thing I have seen. How can you implement it in millions of mosques of Pakistan? Who is going to make sure these SOPs are followed? Police or Imam e Masjid? I was listening to Tahir Ashrafi and he straight away put this on gov't shoulders.

you guys have no idea. Come and live in the Uk where they arent even counting the cases, they are counting the mass graves. they are looking to ease the lock down and nearly 40k dead.

IK in comparison has done a bang up job.

'We are running out of beds': Doctors plead to govt to enforce stricter coronavirus lockdown

A group of Karachi's leading doctors, belonging to the Pakistan Medical Association on Wednesday painted a sobering picture of the on-the-ground realities faced by frontline workers in the fight against the coronavirus.

Urging the government and religious leaders to continue to abide by recommended precautions instead of easing restrictions, they warned a point will otherwise come when they will have to choose between one of two patients to save.

Addressing the emergency briefing, Dr Saad Niaz. a gastroenterologist at the Dow University of Health Sciences, said that it was important to remember the outbreak is foremost a health issue.

"This is a medical problem which [of course] has its resulting economic and social effects. But we need to understand that this is nonetheless primarily a medical issue."

"In the past five days from April 16 to April 21, from 6,772 patients we went to 9,464 patients, which is a near 40% increase [...] an increase by 2,692 patients. If you count patients from February 25, we took time in reaching 2,000 patients," he said.

Dr Niaz regretted that there was unfortunately the impression that this is not as serious an issue in our country as in other countries. "The reason for that is our testing capacity, which is an issue that will remain," he said.

Warning against such impressions, he said: "This is not true at all. All of us doctors think the numbers are higher and will continue to rise."

"Some people thought that because we live in the sub-continent, [coronavirus] won't affect us and if it does affect us, it won't be as severe."

"We have not even peaked yet. So it is very important to bust all these myths," said Dr Niaz.

"If we hadn't placed the country under a lockdown, then the situation would have been different/ Similarly, if we don't act now, two weeks down the line, the situation would be very different."

"The wards are all already 80% saturated. And in Pakistan's case, there are more patients who are under 60 years of age," he said.

Dr Niaz also drew attention to the fact that more and more doctors are getting affected, with as many as 162 who had already fallen prey to the disease from Sindh.

"We are already very under-equipped when it comes to our healthcare. We don't have what it takes to fight this," he said, citing lack of COVID-19 specific facilities and personal protection equipment for doctors throughout the country.

"We will have great difficulty in the coming days such as refusal to admit patients because of no beds," he said.

"Severity is much more than what we think, already. All experts think this will blow out of control over the next 2-4 weeks. And with non-COVID patients coming in, the hospitals will have to be closed [to more patients]."

The DUHS doctor explained that the country's current capacity had so far sustained the volume of patients "because due to a lockdown in place, they were only trickling in".

"Projected figures stand at 70,000 and if even 10% of those are serious cases, we don't even have the capacity to accomodate those. There are no ventilators.

"Our only option is to be aggressive with precautions. We don't have the skill or capacity to combat something of the scale it could reach.

"Whatever we have done so far will have to be continued," he stressed.

"What I fear is that we start treating patients on the road. We will be deciding between a 35-year-old and 55-year-old and giving preference to the younger one."

Dr Abdul Bari, who is the CEO of Indus Hospital, said that after the lockdown was eased on April 14, doctors had vehemently protested against the decision.

"We thought that a lockdown of at least two incubation periods would take place and that would show some positive signs," he said.

He said that the arrival of Ramazan, which had prompted the government to review the measures taken and subsequently ease restrictions, had resulted in a surge in cases.

"This led to great anger and stress in the doctor community as they are the experts in this situation [and must be heard]," said Bari, adding: "All of Karachi's medical facilities are now almost full to the brim with patients."

Another doctor regretted the lockdown had been scaled back.

"The Sindh government had taken very good measures in the beginning.

"That has turned into a joke now. There are countless vehicles on the road [...] We have gathered here to tell you we have no space in hospitals anymore," said the doctor.

He said the government had made a "huge blunder", as had the religious scholars, in agreeing on an easing of restrictions.

it has doubled in just one week. Our leaders are still confused. They need economic activity when this virus was trying to find its feet in Pakistan. well done to all incompetent people leading us.

Pakistan crossed 5000 cases on 11th April, and 10,000 cases on 21st April. So doubled in 10 days and not a week. Secondly in this time frame our testing rate has increased from less than 2000 per day to about 6000-8000 per day so a step increase of 3×. The total number of cases is a secondary metric, the most important one is the rate of increase of new cases. This has remained steady for Pakistan and hasn't exploded. With testing expected to reach 20k by end of the month we will get more positive cases but it's good news in the sense we will be identifying and isolating new cases earlier therefore restricting the spread.

All information is available on covid.gov.pk please first get all the facts then pass judgement in these critical and tense times. You can do your politics after we beat the disease.

I agree mosques should be shut. Government should conduct taraweeh and five times Jamaat through television. Won't sit well with jahil mullahs.

It's accelerating, that is clear by looking at the data, especially Sindh where I fear the situation is the worst.

They are expecting a peak in late May which would mean we will hitting doubling each week soon. How low it goes depends on a couple of factors:

1- How good we are at identifying and isolating clusters/cases.

2- How wide spread testing we have. I am thinking we need to do 50000 atleast by mid May.

3- Summer and that's the key factor here. Latest research does point to a low transmission rate when it's hot and humid.

4- And it's last because we aren't taking it that seriously how week me manage social distancing.

If all four go in our favor we will come out with minimal loss especially if 3 holds. The bad news is then it will come roaring back.in winter but I am hoping we will have good therapeutics and maybe even a vaccine then.

Wish there were some checks and balances people doing whatever they want subjective thinking even the doctors are giving up a stitch in time saves 9

Trump and Pakistan's Khan discuss coordination against COVID-19

U.S. President Donald Trump and Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan on Wednesday discussed the global coronavirus pandemic and efforts to blunt its spread, the White House and the Pakistani leader’s office said.

Trump and Khan “discussed developments in the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic and agreed to continue working together on a coordinated response to defeat the virus and minimize its economic impact,” White House spokesman Judd Deere said.

The Pakistani statement said Trump reassured Khan “of U.S. support to Pakistan in the efforts to combat COVID-19 including by making available ventilators as well as in the economic arena.”

Trump, it said, offered to send “the latest rapid testing machine for COVID-19” to Khan after hearing that the Pakistani leader was tested for the disease. Khan was found to be negative, according to Pakistani news reports.

Entire Sindh government and PPP blaming federal government for their own incompetency.

NY governor was mad at trump cause Fed gov was not helping and in US state power is huge so even with 18th amendment provinces will never have enough resources to combat covid 19 alone so they are not that off tbh

Sir I have lived in Karachi for most of my life please don't educate me about 18th amendment and what Sindh government can or cannot do. The two biggest and best hospitals in the city are Aga Khan and Indus, both are in the private sector. If these hospitals weren't there or Edhi foundation wasn't working there won't even be an ambulance service in the city. Imagine that the government has outsourced its most important responsibility. There is Rescue 1122 in all other provinces except for Sindh.

The Sindh government can only loot and plunder and ofcourse bark Jeay Bhutto. Apparently the Sindh government allocated 140b in the health budget this year but not a single ruppee is visible on the ground. Maybe my friend Major can tell us where it went.
