Coronavirus in Pakistan

5,000 tests daily in Punjab for the last couple of days, and 10,000 countrywide yesterday for the first time.

5,000 tests daily in Punjab for the last couple of days, and 10,000 countrywide yesterday for the first time.

Even KP is closing the gap with Sindh while Sindh seems to be regressing because Bhutto is still alive.

We still have barely breached 10k tests a day. This is simply not enough and now the excuses should start to fall apart.

While at the start it could have been argued with reason that we didn't have enough time and resources, that certainly isn't true now. We have had ample time and by governments own estimate we should be over 50k tests daily.

This failure to increase testing is going to cost us badly, especially with the approach we have adopted for the pandemic which is of smart lockdowns. If we don't even know the full story on the ground, what hope do we have to implement such a plan.

5,000 tests daily in Punjab for the last couple of days, and 10,000 countrywide yesterday for the first time.

Government said that they will do 20 000 tests by end of April. This is not good enough as they do now produce their own testing kits now aswel I believe.

KARACHI: Liaquat University Hospital, one of the three approved clinical trial centers for convalescent plasma in Pakistan’s southern Sindh province, announced on Wednesday it was treating a 53-year-old COVID-19 patient through plasma therapy.

“When the patient’s health condition deteriorated, we gave him double oxygen without putting him on ventilator,” Dr. Aftab Hussain Phull, focal person of the health facility in Hyderabad, told Arab News on phone.

“The family of the patient wanted him to undergo the trial treatment,” he said, adding there had been significant improvement in the health of the patient since the beginning of the therapy three days ago, though he admitted it could not be ascertained if it was due to the plasma therapy.

“Incubation can also improve a patient’s health condition and we will have to assess the results properly,” he continued.
Passive immunization is not a new medical treatment and has been done for the last 125 years. In Pakistan as well, the 53-year-old patient is among several who are undergoing this therapy.

“Passive immunization was used to cure patients of diseases like SARS, Ebola and influenza in recent memory,” Dr. Tahir Shamsi, a renowned haematologist and Head of National Institute of Blood Diseases (NIBD), told Arab News.

He said that a coronavirus patient usually took about ten to twenty days to recover.

The objective of carrying out passive Immunization clinical trials in Pakistan, he added, was to see how many COVID -19 patients could be prevented from being put on ventilators. If 70 to 90 percent were saved, he continued, it would be a huge success.

“It will also tell us when to transfuse plasma and which category of COVID-19 patients will benefit from it,” Shamsi said. “Since the results of clinical trials have not been published yet, their effectiveness cannot be gauged.”

He informed that these trials were conducted in a controlled manner to respond to specific research questions, adding that the answers would help determine the benefits of the treatment along with any side effects.

Explaining the procedure, Shamsi said three weeks after a COVID-19 patient tests negative, doctors acquire his plasma.

“As per protocol, one-liter plasma is taken, bifurcated and saved. Tests are done to see if Immunoglobulin G antibodies have developed.

The blood is also checked for transmissible diseases like HIV, hepatitis and malaria. It’s also seen if any effect of coronavirus is still present or the disease has completely vanished,” he said, adding that there was a set procedure to transfuse plasma in patients’ bodies once it was ready.

He continued that the process required regular monitoring and lasted for about four to six hours.

Shamsi said it took a patient 24 hours to stabilize after transfusion, adding that another four to five days were required to reach a level where the patient could be removed from oxygen.

He added that the National Health Services in Britain recently established clinical trials in the whole country and requested the recovered COVID-19 patients to donate their plasma. The United States had also started clinical trials for passive immunization where a large number of individuals had registered themselves to give plasma.

“We will have to start a mass mobilization campaign to get donors in Pakistan at the earliest,” Shamsi said, adding: “The country will need them in large numbers in the foreseeable future.”

“We are moving toward our peak,” he continued while pointing out that Pakistan could have 70,000 to 75,000 patients within three to four weeks.

“When we hit the peak, a large number will move to hospitals. Everyone should come forward and donate convalescent plasma,” he said.

Shamsi also informed that one person’s plasma could save two people’s lives.

Peak not yet but govt has eased lockdown though sensibly shopping malls public parks and transport remain close, they missed the golden opportunity of massive testing between 21 march and 14 Apr.

Pakistan's tally leaps past 25,000 after Punjab confirms a record 838 new cases

Pakistan's tally has leapt past 25,000 with Punjab reporting 838 new cases of coronavirus in the province. This takes the provincial tally to 10,033.

This is also the biggest jump any province has seen in the number of coronavirus cases in a single day.

Hong Kong is quarantining returning Pakistanis in government-designed quarantine centers instead of putting them in home quarantine similar to other people who are making their way back to Hong Kong.

This is what the HK Health Department said when asked why only Pakistanis are being placed in quarantine centers:

‘The testing rate in Pakistan is low and the number of reported cases might not reflect the actual epidemic situation in Pakistan.’

As I have said before, we need to stop tooting our own horns. The number of reported cases is comparatively because people are not being tested and most do not seek medical attention for symptoms like runny nose and sore throat.

So far, at least six Pakistanis who returned to HK in the last 10 days have testes positive for Covid-19.

Sindh CM Murad Ali Shah has said that the lockdown in Sindh is not ending on Monday - he said it is entering its "Second Phase" - and there will be some "more additional restrictions" in this phase

Noticed one anomaly today... Punjab has about 10,000 total cases and 4,500 of them have already recovered with only 5,500 active cases. Meanwhile Sindh has 9000 total cases and only 1,800 of them have recovered. I wonder why the recovery rate is lagging behind by such as extent in Sindh.

Pakistan now has the capacity to preform over 16,000 tests a day for the coronavirus disease, as it pushes closer to its goal of carrying out 20,000 tests daily this month.

The World Health Organisation’s daily situation report, dated May 8, places the country’s total testing capacity for the deadly virus at 16,596. Pakistan, as per the report, has 58 laboratories to date, majority of which, 23, are in Punjab.

It is unclear though how many of these laboratories are private.

Punjab, notes the WHO, has a testing capacity of 5,810 per day. While Sindh has 13 functional labs and is a close second with a capacity of 5,000.

Islamabad, Pakistan’s capital city, has seven labs and can carry out 2,756 tests in a day. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has eight labs and a capacity of 1,788 test per day.

Balochistan, Pakistan’s poorest and most undeveloped province, has only two laboratories for COVID-19 testing and a capacity of 894 tests per day.

As for the federating units, Gilgit Baltistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir, they have two and three labs and the testing capacity of 188 and 160, respectively.

Last month, Dr Zafar Mirza, the prime minister’s special assistant on health, has announced that Pakistan would be enhancing its testing capacity to 20,000 tests daily by the end of April.

30pc of tests conducted yesterday came back positive: Liaquat Shahwani

Balochistan government spokesperson Liaquat Shahwani has said that 30 per cent of coronavirus tests conducted in the province yesterday came back positive.

Speaking to the media in Quetta, Shahwani said that it was an increase over Thursday's results when 21pc of tests came back positive.

"We have also been doing random testing of which some 18 to 20pc results are coming back positive. In the next phase, we will conduct aggressive testing so we can have an idea of the trajectory of cases in the province," he said.

‘Relaxed curbs will mean 1.1m cases by July’

The Director General Health of Balochistan Dr Saleem Abro said, without implementing a strict lockdown, the total positive cases in Balochistan would reach 300,000 by the first week of July but if the situation isn’t controlled then the number would climb up to 1.1 million by the second week of July in Balochistan, urging the masses to avoid unnecessary traveling and movement in the cities during the prevailing pandemic.

He shared these views on Thursday while addressing a news conference with the President of Quetta Press Club, Raza ur Rehman in Quetta.

“Being a medical expert I am warning that if we continue our non-serious attitude against Covid-19 and keep violating lockdown guidelines then by December more than 9.5 million people in Balochistan would become active cases of Coronavirus,” Dr Abro said, adding that we can’t predict how many people would die or turn critical.
He further said, our doctors, nurses and young doctors have been performing their duties in Fatima Jinnah and Sheikh Zahed Hospitals.

“I am in contact with Chief Minister Balochistan Jam Kamal Khan since the outbreak and the health department received immediate funds in order to curb the contagious virus,” DG Health said, claiming all facilities including PPE kits, gloves, masks and hand sanitizers are available in all hospitals treating active patients.

Replying to a query regarding complaints of slow testing Dr Abro said, we have two PCR machines testing 700 to 800 samples on regular basis but NDMA pledged to impart five additional machines that would gear up rapid testing in Balochistan.

“Health department has established a 460-bed isolation ward in new established flats inside BMC Hospital. People here opting to quarantine themselves in their homes but they should do more in order to save their family members from being infected,” the DG Health said, adding that they have suggested for a 15 to 20 days curfew in Balochistan in order to control the speedy spread of the deadly virus.

Citing the critical condition of senior doctor Dr. Munaaf Tareen, the DG Health said, our doctors’ community have been fighting with coronavirus but now the general public should understand the sensitivity of this crisis by now.

He further urged religious and tribal elders to use their influence in persuading to implement the lockdown because the virus is more-dangerous for people above the age of 60 and people having other diseases.

“Balochistan has 1659 active Covid-19 cases while 23 deaths have occurred. Fortunately 10 infected doctors have recovered from it,” Dr Abro concluded.

Sindh reports record 1,080 new coronavirus cases, 4 more deaths

Sindh has confirmed a record 1,080 new coronavirus cases over the past 24 hours, according to Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah.

This brings the total number of infections in the province to 10,771.

He also reported four more deaths from the virus in the province, taking the total number of fatalities to 180.

Rows and rows of bumper-to-bumper traffic were seen across cities in Pakistan on Monday after the lockdown was eased, local media reported.

People also flocked to markets in cities, which opened for the first time in more than a month. The government earlier announced that it would lift its lockdown in phases to give some relief to the economy.

While public transport is still shut, factories and offices have opened, reported the Dawn newspaper.

“We opened today after almost two months; I am almost bankrupt and owe workers their salaries,” Muhammad Sattar, a garment shop owner in Karachi, told the newspaper.

But the easing of the lockdown comes amid concerns that cases are not receding in Pakistan. In fact, daily infection rates continue to grow, with a tally of more than 32,000 and 706 deaths, according to Johns Hopkins University data.

Gotta feel for IK.

Since he has come to the power - God knows what happens but he can’t focus deeply on economy issues.

First the India-Pak war hysteria, then the internal dispute and now this COVID-19.

I hope 'prouding Afghan' seeks medical help in Afghanistan and not refer to our hospitals operated by 'kalia' Pakistanis
