Coronavirus in USA

People have taken precautions bro, everyone is wfh, maintaining distance of 1 m, but govn delayed the response also still not sure how testing is.

States is too globalized , similar to London it became hard to control, imagine 17 Italians in India, now imagine 10 times the same people from China,Italy and Iran each probably travelled to states..

They started too late.

Now they are scrambling.

Plus Trump's rhetorics didn't help.

Idiot in chief in action.

He did one good thing though closing of EU, EU took time and now they are closing on borders.

Describing himself as a "wartime president", President Donald Trump has vowed the US will achieve "total victory" over the coronavirus.

He spoke as he revived a Korean War-era measure allowing the US to ramp up production of vital medical supplies.

Two lawmakers meanwhile became the first members of Congress to test positive for the infection.

The US has more than 9,300 cases of Covid-19 and has seen 150 deaths so far, according to estimates.

Globally there are some 220,000 confirmed cases and over 8,800 deaths.

At a White House press conference, the president was asked by a reporter whether he considered the country to be on a war footing in terms of fighting the virus.

"It's a war," he said. "I view it as a, in a sense, a wartime president."

Mr Trump has been holding daily briefings on the emergency this week after being accused of playing down the outbreak in its early stages.

He said: "We must sacrifice together, because we are all in this together, and we will come through together. It's the invisible enemy. That's always the toughest enemy.

"But we are going to defeat the invisible enemy. I think we are going to do it even faster than we thought, and it'll be a complete victory. It'll be a total victory."

Mr Trump announced he was signing the 1950 Defense Production Act, which empowers the president to direct civilian businesses to help meet orders for products necessary for national security.

But he said later on Twitter that he would only invoke the measure "in a worst case scenario in the future".

Mr Trump also described as an "absolute, total worst case scenario" a warning by his Treasury Secretary, Steve Mnuchin, that the pandemic could send US unemployment rocketing to 20%.

The president said two US Navy hospitals ships would be pressed into service to help alleviate an expected shortage of sick beds.

The USNS Comfort is expected to be sent to New York Harbor, though defence officials said it is currently undergoing maintenance in Virginia.

The other vessel, USNS Mercy, is being prepared to deploy to a location on the West Coast.

During the press conference, Mr Trump again rejected suggestions that his use of the term "Chinese virus" to describe Covid-19 was racist.

Earlier in the day the US-Canada border, the world's longest, was effectively closed, except for essential travel and commerce.

Mr Trump also announced a new crackdown on migrants or asylum seekers crossing the US-Mexico border.

He said his administration would invoke a statute that allows people to be blocked in order to prevent the spread of communicable diseases.

People are too busy talking about whether the pandemic should be called COVID19 or the China Virus.

US jails are to let out inmates as cases of coronavirus infections are being reported in prisons.

New York City is releasing "vulnerable" prisoners, the mayor said on Wednesday, days after Los Angeles and Cleveland freed hundreds of inmates.

Prison reform advocates say those in jail are at higher risk of catching and passing on Covid-19.

There have been more than 9,400 cases of Covid-19 and 152 deaths in the US so far, according to estimates.

Globally there are some 220,000 confirmed cases and over 8,800 deaths.

Rikers Island outbreak
New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said on Wednesday that city officials will this week identify individuals for release, including people who were arrested for minor crimes and those most vulnerable to infection due to underlying health problems.

His announcement came hours after a guard and a prisoner tested positive for coronavirus at Rikers Island prison, where disgraced former Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein, 68, is a high-profile inmate.

Weinstein will be moved to a different state prison, an official said on Wednesday.

Other New York prisons, such as Sing Sing, have had inmates test positive for coronavirus and one employee for the state's corrections department has died from it.

What have other US jurisdictions done?
The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department reduced it's inmate population by 600 in the last two weeks, officials said on Tuesday.

"Our population within our jails is a vulnerable population just by who they are, where they are located, so we're protecting that population from potential exposure," Los Angeles Sheriff Alex Villanueva told reporters earlier this week.

The LA County jail system is the largest prison system in the world with an average population of around 22,000 prisoners.

Mr Villaneuva disclosed that arrests in the county are also down, from an average of 300 per weekend to only 60 in mid-March.

Cuyahoga County, Ohio, where the city of Cleveland is located, has also released hundreds of prisoners due to coronavirus concerns.

Judges held emergency hearings through the weekend to work out plea deals and other agreements to allow prisoners to be released early or without serving time.

Several states from New York to California are now banning in-person visitors. A ban on visits led to a deadly prison riot in Italy last week.

Federal agencies will postpone most arrests and deportations during the coronavirus crisis.

What is the danger to prisoners?
Reform campaigners say prisoners face unique risks, due to a lack of hygiene in overcrowded cells and hallways.

Handcuffed people cannot cover their mouths when they cough or sneeze, sinks often lack soap and hand sanitiser is considered contraband due to its alcohol content.

Iran has already released 85,000 people, including political prisoners, in an effort to combat the pandemic.

The US locks up more of its citizens per capita than any other country, with an estimated 2.3 million people behind bars in federal, state and local prisons.

Some high profile convicts have argued for early release over coronavirus fears.

They include President Trump's former lawyer Michael Cohen, 53, financial fraudster Bernie Madoff, 81, and Gilberto Rodriguez-Orejuela, a notorious Colombian drug lord.

One things for sure, this left field attack by coronavirus has left Trump blind sided and he can't brag about having bigger, better and more nukes to bully the enemy.

US students party on spring break despite coronavirus

Crowds of US university students flocked to Florida for their Spring break, defying recommendations from the CDC and federal government over the new coronavirus.

National health officials are advising against gatherings of 10 or more people.

California's 40 million residents have been told to only leave their homes when absolutely necessary during the coronavirus pandemic.

State governor Gavin Newsom issued the state-wide "stay at home" order, which has taken effect from Thursday evening and will remain in place until further notice.

He said the state needed to "recognise the reality" and "make tough decisions", although conceded that home isolation was not his "preferred choice".

The governor said modelling has shown 56% of California residents are expected to contract COVID-19 over the next eight weeks, requiring nearly 20,000 more hospital beds than the state can currently provide.

He warned infection rates are doubling every four days in some parts of the state.

Los Angeles, the nation's second-largest city, is likely to be "disproportionately impacted" in the coming weeks, Mr Newsom added.

The new order means non-essential services including restaurants, bars and gyms will shut down.

However the home isolation measures will not be enforced by police.

The latest developments across the world:

Iran's Mission to the United Nations has said the "inhumane and unlawful" US sanctions are hampering efforts to prevent COVID-19 cases in the country, urging the international community to help lift the sanctions
Haiti has confirmed its first two cases of COVID-19 and announced it will close all airports, schools, factories and seaports
Cannes Film Festival has been postponed, with organisers saying they are considering moving the festival to June or July
South Korea will test all passengers coming from Europe for coronavirus and enforce two-week quarantines beginning on Sunday
North Korea says it has released thousands of people from quarantine, although has not publicly confirmed a single case of COVID-19
Australia has demanded indoor venues provide at least four square metres of space between each person and tightened regulations on travel to and from remote indigenous communities

Earlier on Thursday, Mr Newsom asked President Donald Trump to send a US Navy hospital ship to the port of Los Angeles "immediately" to deal with an expected surge in coronavirus cases.

The State Department has issued a travel alert urging Americans not to go abroad under any circumstances and to return home if they are already abroad unless they plan to remain overseas.

The US has also been considering measures to immediately turn back anyone who crosses the border from Mexico illegally, including asylum seekers.

I guarantee you, somehow the wealthy and large corporations will come out on top of this even better than before. Much like the financial crisis.

Absolutely.

Why?

Cos this is Murica. :))

Markhor bhai may disagree but Dems and American junta have to be taught a lesson.

For the greater good, Trump has to win 2020 (beating Biden) and make them cry so much they realize their flaws.

Nothing teaches you like failure.

New York state on Friday told all non-essential workers to stay home while pleading for more medical personnel and supplies to treat coronavirus cases that could overwhelm hospitals.

The United States has seen a rapid increase of coronavirus cases over the past week, going from roughly 1,000 to well over 13,000 as of March 20. That is largely due to the ramp-up of testing across the country.

The US government, especially the administration of President Donald Trump, was criticised for a slow response, but has ramped up action in recent days, easing restrictions on testing vaccines and passing benefit packages for workers, employers and international corporations.

The US has suspended all non-essential traffic across its borders with both Mexico and Canada as it battles to control the coronavirus outbreak.

Seems like Trump has 'lost it' in a press conference today.

Right now, it's 10:21 am EST there.

1105 cases already recorded.

China had 80,000 cases, US has 15,000. The US is not a dictatorship like China and political leaders can't order citizens to alter their lifestyles unless there is a clear danger.

Over the next week the number of cases in the US may exceed 100,000. But it is what it is. Democracy and freedom comes at the expense of slow response sometimes.

I would say though, after multiple previous cases when viruses have jumped from animals to humans in China and gone on to cause pandemics, if this happened in the US there would have been laws and enforcement to stop the consumption of bats, pangolins etc.

The issue is the lack of reaction by the US even when we (Italy) got swamped so fast. The other EU nations and US had ample time compared to us and are now taking action when they've got into the loop we got into two weeks ago.

This is why Imo Armies should take over for Pandemic , democracies have screwed up the situation dictator level rules are required to tackle this.

Some American students actually partied during this pandemic. These students need to be locked up or fined heavily. They are putting people in danger.

Whether the US had ample time is hypothetical. Everybody is human and so are political leaders. It takes a bit of time to understand the gravity of the situation. Slow response is also due to production limitations. Testing kits can't be magically produced.

A friend of mine who is a senior guy at a management consulting firm is consulting with a client who makes ICU equipment and is facing 15X orders compared to capacity. Obviously there will be shortages for a while, but the mainstream media and the Democrats will blame Trump for everything.

Like calling it a Chinese virus and then expecting them to ship you face masks and hand sanitisers?

US to overtake iran on confirmed cases by tomorrow most likely, altho i am fairly certain iran's number is fudged.

China benefits a lot more from the US than the US benefits from China. Trump is making sure they remember that.

Bhai...I have been tracking USA progress for weeks and had informed about all this happening in my friends Whatsapp group WELL before all the cases rose.

So please don't say it's due to democracy and freedom.

It's not true.

They SIMPLY didn't take it seriously. Even your own country doctors and experts say that.

They had ALL the time in the world to see China and then Europe reel.

They are idiots for not realizing the math.

Trump tweeted about Corona not being a big deal multiple times...once after community transmission had already kicked on but he was too stupid and ignorant to realize it.

They had literally 3 months to prepare and still they flopped.

Plus test kits fiasco.

I will post more about it when I get time.

As for numbers...

On Mar 10, USA had 1000 cases.

10 days later...20,000 cases.

At this rate.....they might even beat China.

Nope.

It's FACTUAL.

Just go through Corona timeline for proof.

Napa....

With hardcore testing, South Korea went from 10 cases per day to 800 per day in just 15 days....BUT in the next 15 days, it dropped to 80-100 cases per day.

They controlled it well cos they realized the importance and tested hard.

Now USA may or may not had similar success but they didn't EVEN try.

When your chief is tweeting on Mar that it's not a big deal when community transmission had already taken place.....the nation has NO HOPE.

In fact wasn't Wales the site of a concert by Stereophonics just a week ago. Correct me if I am wrong, but 3 months is 13 weeks, and apparently the concert in Wales was 12 weeks after we were warned according to you.

In Malaysia there was a Tabligh event in late February attended by 16,000 people and 1,500 of them returned to other countries they had come from. People apparently share food from the same plate. That would be 10 weeks after the warning.

A massive public gathering of 25,000 people was held in Bangladesh 2 days ago to offer prayers to fight the virus.

Scottish singer-songwriter Lewis Capaldi had a live show in Aberdeen, Scotland, 5 days ago.

Mexico's first coronavirus death is a 41-year-old man who went to a concert by Swedish rock band Ghost in Mexico City on March 3rd.

Apparently, not only the US, but the rest of the world too did not get your memo 13 weeks ago.

I know if is fashionable for liberals to sneer at the US, but try not to be so transparent.

Social distancing required the state governments has only been implemented for less than a week now. We have to wait for a couple of weeks to see what the results are.

Americans are resistant to giving up their lifestyles. They are resistant to government interference in their lives. With the good comes the bad. If you choose to believe they are stupid, its your choice.

I can't believe you are posting this.

Spending 10 minutes on Google will answer your questions.

----

1. On December 31 last year, China alerted WHO to several cases of unusual pneumonia in Wuhan, a port city of 11 million people in the central Hubei province. The virus was unknown.

2. On January 7, officials announced they had identified a new virus, according to the WHO. The novel virus was named 2019-nCoV and was identified as belonging to the coronavirus family, which includes SARS and the common cold.

3. Late January, USA had it's FIRST case. And looks like they SUPPRESSED the info.

The United States also had an early warning of the new virus—but it, too, suppressed that information. In late January, just as instances of COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus, began to appear in the United States, an infectious-disease specialist in Seattle, Helen Y. Chu, realized that she had a way to monitor its presence. She had been collecting nasal swabs from people in and around Seattle as part of a flu study, and proposed checking them for the new virus. State and federal officials rejected that idea, citing privacy concerns and throwing up bureaucratic obstacles related to lab licenses.

https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2020/03/coronavirus-showed-america-wasnt-task/608023/

4. On Jan 30....WHO declares Corona as a GLOBAL EMERGENCY. A clue for the supower power maybe? Nope.

4. February, China was reeling. USA had ENOUGH warning bells.

5. In which case, by late Febrary, Europe was seeing SERIOUS cases. USA had EVEN more warning bells.

6. South Korea started heavy testing drive on late Feb (and flattened the curve by mid Mar). That should have been a CLUE for USA but no.

7. Meanwhile our legendary Trump

As for Italy, Korea, etc........they had China warning signs which they missed.

But USA had both China warning signs (in Jan & Feb) as well as crucial 15 days in late Feb to early Mar when Europe was reeling. It still missed it.

As far as Mar 9...USA president was in denial.

And you expect me to say that USA did the best it could?

I know if is fashionable for liberals to sneer at the US, but try not to be so transparent.

No. It's called being fair and honest regardless of who the guilty is.

I know my facts.

There are LITERALLY a gazzilion articles and tweets about the USA fiasco. You can spend some time and read them.

Americans are to be blamed sure. Too many idiots.

But their officials and govt have to be blamed even more.

A number of US states have ordered shutdowns with one in five Americans soon set to be under a "stay at home" order.

Connecticut and New Jersey are joining Illinois and California in ordering residents to stay at home in order to combat the spread of coronavirus.

New York State has ordered non-essential businesses to close.

The virus has claimed nearly 230 lives in the US and infected more than 18,500 people.

Globally more than 270,000 patients have tested positive for the respiratory illness and more than 11,000 have died.

What measures are the states taking?

On Friday, Connecticut, Illinois and New York state announced measures directing tens of millions of people to stay at home. The restrictions order most workplaces to close and require residents to remain inside except for trips to grocery stores, pharmacies and gas stations.

In New York, Governor Andrew Cuomo restricted public gatherings and ordered all "non-essential workers" to stay at home. The measures come as confirmed coronavirus cases in New York reached 7,000 - the highest of any US state.

"These provisions will be enforced," Mr Cuomo told reporters. "These are not helpful hints."

Late on Friday, President Trump declared a major disaster in New York state, a move which will release federal funding.

New York and the neighbouring states of New Jersey, Connecticut and Pennsylvania also issued a joint order on Friday for the closure of all "personal care" businesses, such as hair and nail salons and piercing and tattoo parlours.

All outdoor team sports such as basketball games are also banned under the measures, which take effect on Sunday night.

The announcement comes after California Governor Gavin Newsom issued a similar order, telling all residents to stay at home. He estimated more than half of the 40 million people in his state would contract Covid-19 in just the next two months.

Images from Los Angeles show some of the city's most famous landmarks completely deserted while the freeways are almost empty.

Illinois has also ordered all residents indoors with exceptions to shop for food and medicine or take exercise.

Nevada announced its own ban on non-essential businesses on Tuesday. In Hawaii, bars and clubs have been ordered to close and social gatherings have been limited to groups of 10, according to the New York Times.

President Trump has so far ruled out any nationwide lockdown.

He said during a press conference on Friday: "I don't think we'll ever find (a US shutdown) necessary". He added that the US was "winning" the war against the virus.

As both the number of cases and the global death toll continued to soar, many countries and regions took new measures on Friday, including:

Spain: The government warned that army patrols would catch people outside without good reason
Bavaria: Germany's second most populous state became the first state in impose a lockdown
France: Police said patrols at Paris railway stations had been reinforced to stop people going on trips for the weekend
Indonesia: A state of emergency will be in force in the capital Jakarta from Monday - bars, cinemas and many other businesses will be shut down.

And looks like they SUPPRESSED the info.

https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2020/03/coronavirus-showed-america-wasnt-task/608023/

I know my facts.

There are LITERALLY a gazzilion articles and tweets about the USA fiasco. You can spend some time and read them.

----

The gazzilion articles are by the usual mainstream media that have the same bias as you do.

The point is that the following countries had the same information about the virus as the US, and this is their behavior the past week.

As for Trump playing down the virus, he obviously didn't understand the threat that exponential growth of coronavirus poses. If you think that makes the US more idiotic than the rest of the world, that's again your choice.

Bias for me :))

Man...what can I say? Us libtards are always trying to bring down the clean and pure Trump and USA.

By the way, I know that media is not always fair but in this matter, they have been talking facts (barring some mis-information here or there).

The point is that the following countries had the same information about the virus as the US, and this is their behavior the past week.

Bhai....did you read my posts carefully?

Cos I answered this already.

1. There are countries which ACTUALLY flattened the curve without too much loss..eg - Hong Kong, Singapore, Japan, South Korea...I posted the charts in post #32. USA didn't even try to do that.

2. Then there were countries which were REELING by late Feb giving USA some crucial 15-30 days. USA didn't act fast enough.

3. Everyone had same info YES. Just that some countries faced the wrath before which gave others like USA some useful time which was squandered away.

As for Trump playing down the virus, he obviously didn't understand the threat that exponential growth of coronavirus poses. If you think that makes the US more idiotic than the rest of the world, that's again your choice.

It's not a choice.

It's a 1 + 1 = 2 answer.

Trump is not a poor villager with no access to information.

He has some of the BEST advisors anyone could ever have.

If he believed this was fake news till it was too late, then what can I say?

I am not calling USA idiotic.

I am calling Trump idiotic.

USA has been incompetent due to this guy.

Trump is taking limelight off from WHO and China’s failure..

I have been going through WHO’s statements and it’s been disgrace to say the least as to how they handled the information.

Point is that there are many people and organizations making mistakes at this point. At times revising what they said at a later point in time.

Saying stuff like if I were them I would have rather jumped out of a window etc. is insensitive and doesn’t help anyone.

You are not in their position and have been ranting on PP instead. There’s probably a reason for that.

First of all, that was a light hearted comment anyways. Trump being trump.

Second of all, WHO screwing up, doesn't let Trump off the hook. If we go that route, we can pretty much defend anything.

Third of all, yes people like us can only be ranting here. Atleast we don't call something fake news while having state of the art access to news. That's just an unpardonable crime considering the time it was said.

Fourth of all, mistakes are not a problem. It's the earnestness. Enough news has come up about how Trump is busy deflecting blame and his lack of empathy. His recent outburst to a valid question shows his frustration and the depths of his human character.

Fifth of all, Trump's mistake is not an honest mistake. It's costing people's lives. Calling him out is the right thing to do. Same like we do cricket. We criticise players even though none of us wud last an over against even domestic bowlers. Doesn't mean we can't see or judge what's in front of us.

American population has a large number of obese people and most likely number of people with cardiovascular diseases is significantly higher than in other countries. Let's see if this has any role in on how severely the virus effects the USA.

Some American students actually partied during this pandemic. These students need to be locked up or fined heavily. They are putting people in danger.

I read that Spring Break has been the busiest ever.

Here’s a round up of what America is waking up to on Saturday:

A growing number of cities and states have issued "stay at home" orders as the US death toll passes 200 and more than 20,000 cases are confirmed

One in five American citizens - over 70 million people - will soon be under lockdown orders

On Friday, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and Illinois joined California in requiring residents to stay home and only go outside for necessities such as food and medicine

The new measures take effect over the weekend with Illinois’s lockdown beginning on Saturday and New York’s lockdown starting on Sunday

Canada, Mexico, and the US have agreed to close their borders to all but essential travel and trade

Several US senators are facing calls to resign after it was revealed that they sold stock in companies - later lost value - while at the same time telling the American public not to worry about the coming pandemic, which has caused markets around the globe to tank

An unnamed member of Vice-President Mike Pence’s staff tested positive on Friday for coronavirus, but the person had no "close contact" with either President Trump or Mr Pence, his spokeswoman said

You don't seem to have knowledge about cultures across the world. The US is not Japan. The Japanese have a level of social conformity that the US will never have. Any comparison of the US and Japan which doesn't take this into account is DOA.

While it doesn't have the social conformity of the Japanese, the US has other virtues like individualism which gives it benefits. It has the most creative people and is the leader by far in scientific development. It is also the destination for people from around the world, which unfortunately makes it more vulnerable to such pandemics.

2. Then there were countries which were REELING by late Feb giving USA some crucial 15-30 days. USA didn't act fast enough.

They SIMPLY didn't take it seriously. Even your own country doctors and experts say that.

They had ALL the time in the world to see China and then Europe reel.

They are idiots for not realizing the math.

I just live in a cave. :D

Doesn't matter what culture you are from.

USA acted too late which is a fact.

Feels like an election speech :))

Yes....the reason you mention actually VALIDATES the point I am making.

They are more vulnerable yet they didn't take action until it was too late.

Yes, all of them are considered super powers.

And I have friends and relatives there unlike USA. :P

If approach is idiotic, it's idiotic.

Doesn't matter its USA or Papua Guinea. lol.

USA's failures look more glaring than the latter tho.

Arguing semantics?

Ok I will humour you.

I was referring to "THEY". The people who are decision makers. Trump and his aides.

Not doctors or medical professionals.

Trump ji had the most ADVANCED medical professionals in his team yet poor guy didn't realize the importance of Corona as late as Mar 9.

What does that make him? Think for a sec.

----

All said and done....I am surprised as to why you are defending this so much?

1. I have TONS and TONS of friends, relatives in USA and I see none of them defending all this.

2. I read and look for opinions from experts and I don't see them defending this.

3. There is a medical professional from USA right in this thread and he says response has been pathetic. That speaks volumes. POst #8.

Not sure why you are defending the indefensible.

I don't need to know Japanese culture to realize that USA didn't do its best until it was too late. :)

The reason I am "defending" this is that I am rather tired of all the juvenile attacks on Trump and the US. Nobody is perfect, and anything less than perfection brings forth this flood of criticism from the mainstream media and the Democrats.

It is laughable to even think that the Democrats would have done better than Trump in handling the coronavirus crisis.

The Democrats are very good at three things 1) convincing people they are victimized due to their gender and race, and using that to win elections 2) spending taxpayers' money and 3) getting rich by being in politics.

When it comes to actually getting something to work, Democrats are simply awful.

From Obama's time, we have the wonderful healthcare.gov. A simple website that is supposed to match buyers to providers, should not have cost more than $25 million to build. Instead the idiots spent $500 million and the thing still wouldn't work.

On a smaller scale, we have the recent Iowa primary fiasco. It is not hard, just count the votes and report them to someone who will add them up and announce the winner. However, too hard to do for the Democrats.

Recently we had Biden doing a “virtual town hall”. My aunt, who is now in her 80s, videoconferenced with me a couple of days ago. But don’t forget, these are Democrats. So obviously “Joe Biden’s first virtual town hall was an absolute technical nightmare”

https://www.theverge.com/2020/3/14/...bernie-sanders-illinois-dick-durbin-nightmare

Trump obviously says many things he would have been better off not saying, but to manage a crisis I would any day pick a guy who made billions making and selling things in the real world and has built at least two internationally known brands.

Things have changed dramatically in the last 4 or 5 days. Everybody has retreated into their homes. I live in a city with about a 2 million population, my wife and I drove through the downtown streets yesterday, they were deserted, it was eerie.

There has of course been a sharp rise in Whatsapp messages that I get from other people stuck at home. I am thinking of arranging virtual videoconference parties with friends and relatives also stuck at home around the world :)

NY has been very hard hit, probably because it gets a very large number of travelers from abroad and Newyorkers travel a lot abroad. I am advising my relatives in NYC to get in their car and drive to some small town and stay in an Airbnb for the next couple of weeks.

Cases in the US are still rising at about 50% a day (maybe partly due to more people are getting tested). I hope the "social distancing" of the last few days will result in the rate falling and then to zero over the next couple of weeks. Fingers crossed, good luck to you also.

1. That's the issue bud. You thought I was like a dem supporter trying to throw as much mud as possible on Trump. I am not. I despise dems the way they are right now and I think Biden is a complete joke.

2. Biden already got owned 2 times in this saga. He criticized Trump on blocking travel from China. lol. Then he criticised Italy's single tax payer system as the reason why they couldn't sort this out while USA receiving kits from them. lol. Post #15.

3. As for dem establishment, it's pathetic to see them prop up half insane Biden trying to make him look Presidential. I talked about their bias in the democratic candidates thread.

4. As for Trump, he is someone whom I have wanted to study for a while now. He is a master persuader and knows how to tap into human psychology in a very powerful manner. So it's not all "Trump is stupid" rant from my side.

5. In fact, I opened this thread ONLY because there was no USA specific thread in PP. USA is where my friends, family, clients, friends from my industry are all based. So I have vested interest in how it operates.

6. As for this issue, I am just calling things as I see. It's not about a random tweet of Trump or some mis-statement. When he thinks all of this is a big drama, what action would he have likely taken in the background. As I speak, I come across this:

US intelligence warned Trump in January and February as he dismissed coronavirus threat

Nothing surprising. His tweet was a result of his thought process.

US Vice-President Mike Pence, who heads the White House coronavirus taskforce, says he and his wife will take coronavirus tests later on Saturday after it was discovered that a member of this team tested positive.

Mr Pence said the man, who he did not name, is doing well and has not been to the White House since Monday.

Napa where are you based in the US? How’s it there. NY is in total lockdown

Forgot to answer your question, I am in the Southwest part of the country where the sky is blue most of the year :)

The spending bill being worked out by Congress is going to be "really something very special," says President Donald Trump.

"It’s gonna help people," he said about the stimulus bill that is forecast to be worth over $2 trillion (£1.7tn).

"We had the greatest economy in the history of the world and then we hit this problem," he says.

Stock markets have shed all of the gains earned in the three years of the Trump presidency, economists said on Friday.

"We’re doing this package, the likes of which nobody has ever done before," Mr Trump adds.

I don't trust Washington Post as far as I could throw a bundle of it when it comes to unbiased reporting on Trump. They won't lie outright unless they could get away with it, which they often do when they quote "sources". They will certainly slant the vast majority of their stories to give only one side of the picture. Unfortunately that is what their readers want, and that is what they deliver. This is a worldwide phenomenon, where you find major news outlets biased in one direction or the other.

Trump can't act on every intelligence report that comes his way, and really his job is not to make every decision but to put competent people in place to make decisions.

I assume your family, friends and colleagues belong to the same demographic as my family, friends and colleagues, and unfortunately I have found them to prefer a certain kind of news sources that suits their existing worldview. It isn't a big secret that these are professionals who have done well in the globalized economy, and that makes them ill-disposed to Trump.

I think you have a bit of confirmation bias. You quote Washington Post. No doubt you also read articles from New York Times and LA Times. Diversify your sources. Go to Real Clear Politics to get an assortment of views.

Sigh people are still supporting trump when he literally is taking America to it's grave. All of this when we need unity and coherent policies like the one we saw in communist China.

Trump needs to step away ASAP everytime he does a press conference it adds more panic, people will soon start having heart attacks if this ***** doesn't stop opening his mouth. Let fauci and military handle this, this job is not for a phony leader like Trump who is a narccist. America cant be divided we are headed towards the worst crisis in modern history there is so much panic right now.

Alot of stuff is sold out. Thats the biggest impact of the Coronavirus here in the US. Difficult to get Water. Almost impossible to find toilet paper, and hand santiziers. People are hoarding supplies.

For people who work in various industries like hospitality, airlines, restaurants, etc they are looking at some tough times ahead. $1,200 check wont cover much if there are mass layoffs.

Also here are not enough tests so you cant effectively quarantine people. Which means there is no effective way to stop it from spreading, without a complete shutdown, which is impossible.

Best hope for us here is to hope this Virus just goes away in a few months.

Should his son in law be involved in the handling this? He has zero qualifications to deal with this. One can definitely hold Trump responsible for that.

This money will go mainly to special interests. Yeh bik gayi hai gormint.

It is amazing how fast it has spread in the US, and how little the administration is doing about it.
Just a week ago, the US had less than a 1000 cases. Today it has nearly 20,000 and is ranked fourth after China, Italy, and Spain in the total number of cases.

There's still no social distancing happening!

You are mistaken my friend.

This issue is not due to lack of social distancing alone.

The ONLY way to beat corona is to test and isolate while practicing social distancing.

Thats what South Korea did.

If you go to India thread and look through my posts, I talk about it in a detailed way with graphs and numbers.

Or Google it up and see.

BTW, France had it bad cos they missed the window of opportunity.

The math of corona is all about exponential returns.

We dont have enough tests. we are importing swabs from Italy of all countries.

True.

Window of opportunity is long gone.

Once it explodes, it gets almost impossible to test all cases as the growth takes ridiculous proportions.

USA is one nation that might have suffered no matter what they did (due to close links with China) but had they acted faster, they would have been in a. Way better situation.

This situation which they are in is so predictable. Its simple math.

You cannot compare South Korea with its miniscule population even to France, forget about India.

The truth is that there aren't enough testing facilities available even in countries like France and Germany. And you are talking about widespread testing in the US and India?

Social distancing is the cheapest way to go, and it works. Testing should be reserved only for the most vulnerable people, particularly those with symptoms.

1. Testing means only those with symptoms. Not all. Even Korea didn't test all.

2. European nations were unlucky cos Outbreak started there after China. USA on the other hand had crucial 15 to 30 days which they squandered. In a game of exponential numbers, after a point, each day is crucial.

3. Denmark is a good example who contained hard so situation is not so bad. Look at how they destroyed their stats and brought it back.

https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/country/denmark/

4. Social distancing without testing during the window of opportunity means nothing. You have to do both. Contain via distancing and test hard.

5. Once things go out of hand, then you can only do so much which is what most nations are doing.

Should his son in law be involved in the handling this? He has zero qualifications to deal with this. One can definitely hold Trump responsible for that.

Different sorts of expertise is needed to handle a crisis like this. Doctors, scientists, manager etc. all need to come together to deal with this. I read that Jared Kushner is running a "Shadow Coronavirus Task Force" inside the WH. Is he a competent manager? Is he helping or making things worse? Maybe yes, maybe no, I do not know.

US is still a capitalist country. A lot of firms know that they need to do their best to produce the goods needed to fight this pandemic. Does Trump need to invoke the Defense Production Act to get them to do this, or is is better to let individual firms act? Central control has some advantages but also can introduce a layer of bureaucracy that hampers quick response.

Imagine a firm saying "we are waiting for the Federal government to tell us what to produce instead of responding to what the hospitals have been telling us".

Anyway, I am not saying that one system is better than the other. The only thing I can be sure of is whatever Trump does, CNN, Wash Post and New York Times will say that he did something stupid or racist. His ban on travel from China looks like genius in hindsight, but he was called racist and worse when he did it.

This is what Trump has done to you people, you distrust the media, doctors and health experts over one man. Trump is gonna be the president that sinks america if the military doesn't step in, China is gonna be the new super power when this is all said and done. This man is careless and has the comprehension skills of a 5th grader, he can't lead the US or the world out of this crisis.

In addition ban on China DID NOTHING except for scoring political points with his racist voter base. We put a ban on China while allowing people from Italy and other countries without any testing. Then to add fuel to the fire, we did not prepare test kits or medical equipment when we knew this was coming. Still the idiot wants to make you believe this is nothing more than a common cold when people are dying in record numbers and he is putting out false information. Shame on you.

So banning people from a country that is the origin of the infection wasn't a good thing?

"Still the idiot wants to make you believe this is nothing more than a common cold". The used of the word "still" implies that this is something that was said recently. This is something you made up. If you didn't, then post a link to a source that shows he said that within the last 3 days.

This is what Trump has done to you people, you distrust the media, doctors and health experts over one man.

If you unable to see the bias in the media, then you can continue living in your delusional world. As for trusting doctors and health experts, of course I trust them as a group. That doesn't mean I trust every one of them, and believe every one of them. If I did, then I would have believed the couple of psychologists who keep ranting on social media that they have "professionally" judged Trump to be a madman in violation of the ethics of their profession which forbids them from passing opinions on people they who have not consulted with them in real life.

Trump is gonna be the president that sinks america if the military doesn't step in, China is gonna be the new super power when this is all said and done.

China will never overtake the US, that is a fact.

This man is careless and has the comprehension skills of a 5th grader, he can't lead the US or the world out of this crisis.
It is your choice to call a man who made billions, built successful brands, and won a Presidency as someone who "has the comprehension skills of a 5th grader". People are entitled to their delusions, especially if they live in democracies.

Shame on you.

I would rather be called shameless by someone like you than give up my powers of reasoning.

No more replies to you unless I see something intelligent.
