Coronavirus job losses could total 47 million, unemployment rate may hit 32%, Fed estimates

The coronavirus economic freeze could cost 47 million jobs and send the unemployment rate past 32%, according to St. Louis Fed projections.

There are nearly 67 million Americans working in jobs that are at a high risk of layoffs, according to the analysis.

More than 47 million Americans could lose their jobs in the next three months, pushing the US unemployment rate above 32%.

That’s according to a recent analysis by the Federal Reserve, which describes it as a “back-of-the-envelope” calculation.

However, the heavy economic cost is already clear, with a record 3.28 million Americans filing for unemployment last week.

Those numbers are expected to rise. In just one example, US department store Macy’s on Monday, said it had placed most of its 130,000 workers on unpaid leave, citing the loss of “the majority of our sales”. It said it would continue to pay for staff health insurance until the end of May.

The daily briefing comes as more states have ordered residents to stay at home and medical workers across the nation continue to plead for more equipment.

Donald Trump has said the US will be in "a very good shape" in terms of the number of ventilators available by the time the coronavirus outbreak peaks.

The president said at least 10 US companies were now making the medical devices, and some might be exported.

The virus can cause severe respiratory issues as it attacks the lungs. Ventilators help keep patients breathing.

The US has more than 163,000 confirmed virus cases and over 3,000 deaths.

New York City is the worst-hit place in America, with 914 confirmed fatalities, according to Johns Hopkins University.

The US last week became the country with the most reported cases, ahead of Italy and China.

Speaking at Monday's Coronavirus Task Force briefing at the White House, Mr Trump said: "We have now 10 companies at least making the ventilators, and we say go ahead because, honestly, other countries - they'll never be able to do it."

Asked whether there would be enough ventilators for all patients in the US who needed them during a predicted peak in infections in two weeks' time, Mr Trump responded: "I think we going to be in a very good shape."

He said more than a million Americans had been tested for the virus, "more than any other country by far. Not even close".

He accused a reporter who pointed out that South Korea had tested proportionally more people when measured by population size of negativity.

And he added that he should be congratulated on his administration's progress in fighting the virus.

Mr Trump also repeated his allegations that some US state governors were "hoarding" critical medical equipment, and that items including face masks were being stolen from hospitals. He gave no evidence for either claim.

Mr Trump said "challenging times are ahead for the next 30 days", but that social distancing could save more than a million American lives.

"We will have a great victory," he added.

Asked by a CNN correspondent whether his previous comments downplaying the threat of the outbreak were wrong, the president responded that they were "all true".

"I don't want panic in the country. I could cause panic much better than even you," he told the reporter.

Mr Trump has been accused of slowness in implementing measures to stem the spread of the virus as he feared the economic impact could hurt his re-election prospects later this year.

"The economy is number two on my list, we're going to save a lot of lives," he insisted.

What's the situation in the US?

Nationwide guidelines being implemented by many states say citizens must continue to avoid non-essential travel, going to work, and eating at restaurants or bars. Gatherings are limited to groups of under 10 people.

But stricter restrictions apply to millions in some of the worst-hit states.

On Saturday residents of New York, New Jersey and Connecticut were advised not to travel elsewhere within the country for 14 days.

Non-essential gatherings in New York City are banned and most businesses are closed as the city faces more than 33,000 cases. Police can issue fines of $250-500 (£200-£400).

In California, a "shelter in place" order remains.

What about the shortage of equipment?
Earlier on Sunday, Mr Trump accused hospitals in some states of "hoarding" ventilators, face masks and other critical medical supplies.

"We do have a problem with hoarding... including ventilators. Hospitals need to release them - in some cases they have too many, they have to release medical supplies and equipment," he said.

Hospitals "can't hold [ventilators] if they think there might be a problem weeks down the road", he said, alleging that some were "stocked up".

The availability of ventilators is a major concern among health professionals as demand has surged. A number of states have warned that they will soon not have enough to treat patients suffering from Covid-19.

Meanwhile governors are quarrelling with President Donald Trump about the availability of testing kits.

How many Americans are affected by lockdown?

Some 245 million people are already under orders to stay at home, or facing such orders which come into effect later on Tuesday.

Almost two-thirds of states have issued directives for their citizens to stay put, while the remaining states have localised orders in effect.

In Florida, Governor Ron DeSantis, who has been reluctant to impose a state-wide order, said he would instruct people in four counties in the south - where more than half the state's cases of the virus exist - to stay at home. He said this would last until at least the middle of May.

In general, the "lockdowns" allow people to only go out to get essential supplies and medicines, or limited forms of exercise.

The economic consequences have been profound, with millions of people having lost their jobs.

According to an estimate of the Federal Reserve, the US central bank, 47 million people could be out of work in the coming months, with the US still weeks away from the peak of infections.

What are governors and the presidents disagreeing about?

According to the New York Times, President Trump and state governors held a conference call on Monday in which Mr Trump suggested there was no longer a lack of kits to test people for Covid-19.

In an audio recording obtained by the newspaper, Mr Trump says he has not "heard about testing in weeks.

"We've tested more now than any nation in the world. We've got these great tests and we're coming out with a faster one this week... I haven't heard about testing being a problem," he says.

However, Montana Governor Steve Bullock is heard to say his state does not have adequate numbers of kits.

"Literally, we are one day away, if we don't get test kits from the CDC [Centers for Disease Control and Prevention], that we wouldn't be able to do testing in Montana," he says.

Washington Governor Jay Inslee told the Times he was taken aback by Mr Trump's assertion.

"It would be shocking to me that if anyone who has had access to any newspaper, radio, social networks, or any other communication would not be knowledgeable about the need for test kits.

"I can be assured that the White House knows very well about this desperate need for test kits," the newspaper quotes him as saying.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has called again for more supplies, a better national strategy to fight Covid-19 and for residents to stay at home.

"We underestimated this virus. It's more powerful, it's more dangerous than we expected," he emphasised.

The state, which remains the epicentre of the outbreak in the US, desperately needs more equipment and staff.

Cuomo called for a nationwide strategy where states helped mitigate the peak of the crisis together.

"Come help us in New York, get the equipment, get the training, get the experience, and then let's all go help the next place," Cuomo said.

"That would be a smart national way of doing this and showing that unity."

He criticised the "inefficient" US process for ordering ventilators, describing it as "being on eBay with 50 other states bidding on a ventilator". He added once the federal government got involved and was bidding, prices continued to go up.

The governor also addressed his brother CNN anchor Chris Cuomo's Covid-19 diagnosis.

"He’s a really sweet, beautiful guy, and he’s my best friend," Cuomo said.

"There’s a lesson in this. He’s an essential worker...so he’s been out there. If you go out there, the chance that you get infected is very high."

I hope America learned a good lesson for electing a orange clown. This could have been handled so much better but nope, clown supporters themselves are clown and blind to the fact that their president is no there for the people, but for his own benifit.

Putin sending medical supplies to help U.S. fight coronavirus: IFX

Russia is sending the United States medical equipment to help fight the coronavirus outbreak, the Interfax news agency reported on Tuesday, citing the Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov.

President Vladimir Putin made the proposal in a phone conversation with President Donald Trump on Monday, when they discussed the coronavirus and oil markets, directing their energy ministers to speak.

“Trump gratefully accepted this humanitarian aid,” Interfax quoted Peskov as saying. A Russian plane with medical and protective equipment may leave for the United States on Tuesday, he added.

Confirmed U.S. cases have surged to nearly 180,000 with 16,000 new positive tests reported on Tuesday. For a second day in a row, the United States recorded more than 500 new deaths as the total climbed to nearly 3,600, according to a Reuters tally of officially reported data.

The state of relations between Moscow and Washington has been complicated in recent years due to U.S. sanctions on some of Russian companies in response to Russia’s annexation of Crimea in 2014 and Russian support for separatists in eastern Ukraine, among other strains.

In the process of agreeing on the details for the medical supply on Tuesday, “it seems that some on the American side at least did not contribute to the prompt resolution of technical issues in accordance with the agreements of the two presidents”, Peskov was quoted as saying by Interfax.

“It is important to note that when offering assistance to the U.S. colleagues, the president (Putin) assumes that when U.S. manufacturers of medical equipment and materials gain momentum, they will also be able to reciprocate if necessary,” he added.

He also said that Russia and China cooperated in a similar way now as “at a time when the current situation affects everyone without exception ..., there is no alternative to working together in a spirit of partnership and mutual assistance”.

Washington has said that Trump and Putin agreed in the call it was important to stabilize the global energy markets. This helped to steady oil prices on Tuesday, which are still near 18-year lows as the coronavirus hits global demand.

There was just the cold, hard reality of the facts on the ground.

"I want every American to be prepared for the hard days that lie ahead," a grave-faced Donald Trump said in his Tuesday afternoon press conference.

"This is going to be a very, very painful two weeks."

How painful? When the president was asked how many Americans are currently projected to die from the virus given even the current mitigation efforts, he said it was better if his medical experts responded.

The number of deaths, based on current projections, is between 100,000 and 200,000. On 15 April, for instance, 2,214 Americans are expected to die.

"No-one is denying that we're going through a very, very difficult time," said Dr Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. "That's what it is."

The president tried to frame this news as best he could, noting that the projections for US casualties if the government had done nothing were in the millions.

"A lot of people were saying think of it as the flu, but it's not the flu," he said. "It's vicious."

Of course, it was just a week ago the president himself was making exactly such comparisons, noting that the early fatality numbers were much less than those from the flu or even automobile accidents.

"We lose thousands of people a year to the flu," he said then. "We never turn the country off."

Now, however, the seriousness of the situation has hit home.

He spoke of checking in on a friend who was in the hospital with the virus - "a little older, and he's heavy, but he's tough person" - only to find out he was now in a coma.

"I spoke to some of my friends, and they can't believe what they're seeing," he said.

Mr Trump's change of attitude also extended to some of his recent political feuds.

Just days after attacking Democratic Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, mocking her name and calling her incompetent on Twitter, the president said he had a "really great conversation" with her and detailed the support the federal government was providing her state.

Last Friday, he had suggested that if state leaders were not "appreciative" of him, he wouldn't talk to them.

On Tuesday, he recounted conversations with Democratic governors in California and Louisiana.

The new call from the White House was to continue the current mitigation efforts for an additional 30 days; that even if things go from bad to worse in the weeks to come, the efforts will pay off.

It will, however, be a long, slow grind.

"There's no magic bullet," said Dr Deborah Birx, one of the experts on the US taskforce,.

"There's no magic vaccine or therapy. Just behaviours," she said.

Donald Trump has said the UK was facing "catastrophic" results before it changed strategy in the fight against coronavirus - as one of his experts revealed she remains "worried" about Britain's lack of ventilators.

In a briefing at the White House, the US president claimed the British government had "put themselves in a little bit of a problem" over its original plan to tackle COVID-19.

The UK initially did not follow other European countries in closing schools and banning mass gatherings but ramped up measures following predictions that the country could otherwise have seen 250,000 deaths.

Before the shift in strategy, the government's chief scientific adviser, Sir Patrick Vallance, told Sky News that around 60% of the UK population would need to become infected with coronavirus in order for society to have "herd immunity" from future outbreaks.

Addressing US measures to tackle coronavirus, Mr Trump said: "A lot of people were saying: 'Let's just ride it out'.

"This is not to be ridden out because then you would have been looking at potentially 2.2 million people [dying in the US] or more… in a relatively short period of time.

"If you remember, they were looking at that concept - I guess it's a concept if you don't mind death, a lot of death - but they were looking at that in the UK, remember.

"All of sudden they went hard the other way because they started seeing things that weren't good. They put themselves in a little bit of a problem."

The US president added: "They have a name for it, but we won't even go by the name - it would have been very catastrophic I think if that would have happened."

Mr Trump also said he hoped Boris Johnson is "going to be fine" as the prime minister continues to self-isolate in Downing Street after testing positive for coronavirus.

Meanwhile during the briefing, Dr Deborah Birx, the White House's coronavirus response coordinator, pointed out the relatively low number of ventilators in the UK compared to the US.

She said: "We are worried about groups all around the globe. I don't know if you heard the report this morning, there are 8,000 ventilators in the UK.

"If you translate that to United States, that would be like the United States having less than 40,000 ventilators. We have five times that."

Why doesn't the UK have enough ventilators?

Cabinet minister Michael Gove said on Tuesday that the first batch of British-made ventilators to treat coronavirus patients will be rolled out to the NHS next week.

He said thousands are going into production to bolster the 8,000 already deployed in hospitals and reassured the public that ventilators have been bought in from abroad to tackle the pandemic.

The Mercedes F1 team has helped develop a breathing aid to keep coronavirus patients out of intensive care, with a host of other rival teams having pitched in to provide UK hospitals with thousands of extra ventilators.

It was announced on Tuesday that another 393 people have died in the UK after contracting coronavirus - taking the country's death toll to 1,808.

The number of people who have died in the US after testing positive for the virus has risen to more than 3,800, surpassing the 3,305 reported fatalities in China, where the outbreak began.

'Strike again': US scientist predicts coronavirus return in fall

Coronavirus will likely "strike again" in the fall in the United States, according to the top American scientist tackling the disease.

Dr Anthony Fauci, who is spearheading the White House Coronavirus Task Force, said he expects COVID-19 will reappear in a second wave in the October-November period.

It would not be the first time a virus reappeared in the fall. The H1N1 outbreak in 2009 struck twice in the US, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

After initially peaking in May and June, a second wave of H1N1 hit again in late October. In August 2010, the World Health Organization finally announced the pandemic was over.

But Fauci said if coronavirus does re-emerge, it would not be a repeat of the major crisis the country is in now.

First, the US's ability to "test, identify, isolate and contact trace will have significantly improved", Fauci said.

In addition, several clinical trials for potential COVID-19 treatments are under way, he said, adding he hopes at least one will be available by fall. There are also multiple vaccine candidates, one of which is "on track".

"So I would anticipate that, you know, a year to a year and a half, we'd be able to do it under an emergency use," Fauci said in a briefing.

"If we start seeing an efficacy signal, we may be able to even use a vaccine at the next season. So things are going to be very, very different. What we're going through now is going to be more than just lessons learned - it's going to be things that we have available to us that we did not have before," he said.

'Mitigation is actually working'

Despite the grim news that the White House is projecting between 100,000 to 240,000 deaths in the US as a result of the coronavirus pandemic even if physical distancing measures are followed, Fauci said mitigation efforts are having a positive effect.

"It's tough. People are suffering, people are dying. It's inconvenient from a societal standpoint, from an economic standpoint to go through this [distancing]. But this is going to be the answer to our problems," he said.

The US death toll from the coronavirus climbed past 4,000 on Wednesday, eclipsing China's official count.

Public health officials stressed that the number of dead could be lower if people across the country continued keeping their distance from one another.

"We really believe we can do a lot better than that," said Dr Deborah Birx, coordinator of the White House coronavirus taskforce.

That would require all Americans to take their role in preventing the spread of disease seriously, she said.

"There's no magic bullet," Birx added. "There's no magic vaccine or therapy. It's just behaviours. Each of our behaviours translates into something that changes the course of this viral pandemic."

Fauci said the estimate of as many as 240,000 people dead was "a number that we need to anticipate, but we don't necessarily have to accept it as being inevitable".

Florida Republican Governor Ron DeSantis has just issued a mandatory order to state residents requiring them to stay at home and only go out for "essential" needs.

It comes after he was criticised for not ordering a state-wide lockdown, even as more than 30 other US states did so.

There have been about 7,000 coronavirus cases in Florida, as well as 87 deaths.

New York state's virus deaths jump to more than 1,900

The number of coronavirus deaths in New York state more than doubled in 72 hours to 1,941, and Gov Andrew Cuomo said on Tuesday that projections show the outbreak worsening through the month, AP reports.

The sobering news from the governor came as he pledged to close New York City playgrounds to slow the spread of the virus, leaving green spaces open. He said overburdened hospitals in hard-hit downstate areas have begun transferring patients north to the Albany area.

A month after New York discovered its first infection, the state tallied more than 83,000 positive cases. The 1,941 deaths were up from 965 on Sunday morning.

Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan has said the city will be the first to use the new 15-minute coronavirus test kits recently approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

The tests were sent on Wednesday by Abbott Laboratories, a Chicago-based company, and are being deployed immediately.

Mr Duggan also said there were now 2,483 cases in Detroit and the death toll stood at 82.

The city is also moving to test all emergency responders after 91 Detroit Police Department employees and 17 firefighters tested positive.

Russia sent the United States medical equipment on Wednesday to help fight the coronavirus pandemic, a public relations coup for Russian President Vladimir Putin after he discussed the crisis with U.S. President Donald Trump.

Trump, struggling to fill shortages of ventilators and personal protective equipment, accepted Putin’s offer in a phone call on Monday. A Russian military transport plane left an airfield outside Moscow and arrived at New York’s John F. Kennedy airport in late afternoon on Wednesday.

Emergency aid to Washington was a striking development. Usually, the United States donates supplies to embattled countries rather than accepting them. The origin of the gift was bound to revive criticism from Democrats that Trump has been too cozy with the Russian leader.

Among the latest victims was a six-week-old baby. More than 216,000 are now infected - the world's highest figure.

Meanwhile, the Washington Post said the federal government's reserves of protective equipment and medical supplies were almost exhausted.

Quoting officials in the Department for Homeland Security, the newspaper this had left the federal government and individual US states competing for safety gear, while the unprecedented demand had led to profiteering.

US puts federal prisons on lockdown over virus fears

Washington (AFP) - The US confined all its federal inmates, nearly 170,000 people, to their cells and wards Wednesday for at least two weeks to prevent an outbreak of new coronavirus, an especially dire concern in the country with the world's largest prison population.

At least two inmates have died of the COVID-19 illness so far in one Louisiana penitentiary -- the first on Saturday, and a second on Wednesday, according to the Federal Bureau of Prisons.

The bureau said that at least 57 inmates and 37 guards have been infected throughout the 122 federal penitentiaries so far.

Previously, only inmates who had been in contact with infected people were quarantined. Most visits and transfers had also been suspended.

That changed Wednesday. "For a 14-day period, inmates in every institution will be secured in their assigned cells/quarters to decrease the spread of the virus," the bureau said in a statement.

Such lockdowns are usually only implemented to quell prison unrest. This time, the move "is based on health concerns, not disruptive inmate behavior," the statement said.

It said that, "to the extent practicable," inmates would still have access to programs such as education and mental health treatment, while "limited group gathering" would still be allowed to facilitate access to showers and commissary, among other services.

Rights activists strongly criticized the measures. "Solitary confinement is not a solution. Solitary confinement is torture," said Scott Hechinger, a New York public defender, on Twitter.

Similar measures taken due to the virus have led to deadly riots in prisons in Italy and Jordan, and escapes in Venezuela and Brazil.

The US has more than 2.2 million people behind bars, more than any other country in the world -- the vast majority in state penitentiaries or local jails.

Since the beginning of the epidemic, which has now infected more than 209,000 people and killed in excess of 4,600 in the US, there have been calls to reduce the prison population.

Attorney General Bill Barr said Thursday that he supports house arrest for the most vulnerable people in federal prisons, especially the elderly and those at the end of their sentences.

The prison system in the largest US state, California, said Tuesday that it plans to release about 3,500 non-violent inmates. Other US jurisdictions, including the state of New Jersey and some cities, have announced similar measures.

Roughly 10 million Americans have lost their job in the last two weeks. That rate is unprecedented.

There were several reasons for this week’s historic increase, including more states ordering non-essential businesses to close to contain the spread of the virus.

A government relief package was also signed last week that expanded unemployment benefits to help more people.

The captain of the USS Theodore Roosevelt, Brett Crozier, has been removed from his post after he complained that the US navy was not doing enough to prevent coronavirus from spreading rampantly through the aircraft carrier.

Capt Crozier had written a letter to his bosses saying that urgent action needed to be taken to prevent American troops from dying outside of wartime.

"He exercised extremely poor judgement" said Acting US Navy Secretary Thomas Modly.

He also told reporters that Capt Crozier was being fired for allegedly leaking the letter to the media.

He said the letter "created the impression the Navy was not responding to his questions".

"It creates the perception the Navy is not on the job; the government is not on the job. That's just not true."

Uninfected members of the ship's 4,000 crew are being quarantined in Guam after the governor of the US island territory said they could stay as long as they had no interactions with locals.

New York reels at center of pandemic as home-bound Americans feel economic pain

New York City hospitals and morgues bent under the strain of the coronavirus pandemic on Thursday, struggling to treat or bury casualties, as the state’s governor offered a grim prediction that the rest of the country would soon face the same misery.

Global coronavirus cases surpassed 1 million on Thursday with more than 52,000 deaths, according to a Reuters tally based on country by country data.

Nearly 1,400 people have been killed by the virus in New York City, while an estimated 90% of Americans are under orders to remain at home, in many cases unable to work and fearing infection when they leave to buy food or other necessities.

“In many ways, New York state is a microcosm of the United States and that’s why I think it is going to be illustrative to the rest of the nation as to what is going to happen,” New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said.

The U.S. death toll stood at over 5,800 on Thursday, up more than 900 from the day before, with a total of 240,000 cases reported by states and counties, according to a Reuters tally.

The U.S. Navy relieved the commander of the aircraft carrier Theodore Roosevelt, who wrote a scathing letter asking for help controlling a coronavirus outbreak onboard, U.S. officials told Reuters on Thursday.

White House medical experts have forecast between 100,000 to 240,000 people could be killed even if Americans follow strict lock-down orders.

The U.S. government reported that a record 6.6 million workers, sent home by their employers as businesses closed, had filed for jobless benefits last week, double the previous all-time high set a week earlier.

“It takes your breath away,” Justin Hoogendoorn, head of fixed income strategy and analytics at Piper Sandler in Chicago, said of the unemployment numbers. “Obviously the immediate reaction to something like that is going to be fear.”

The Walt Disney Company said on Thursday it would furlough all non-essential employees beginning on April 19.

Coronavirus spike on Navajo Nation raises alarms

A steep rise in coronavirus cases on the Navajo Nation in the western part of the United States has caused concern among regional leaders, who worry the tribal lands are ill-equipped to handle the pandemic and the federal government is taking too long to address needs.

The Navajo Nation Department of Health and Navajo Area Indian Health Service reported 174 COVID-19 cases in the Navajo Nation on Wednesday, along with seven COVID-19-related deaths. There were roughly 49 confirmed cases one week ago.

The Navajo Nation is a 71,000 square kilometre (27,413 square mile) semi-autonomous territory spanning three US states - Arizona, New Mexico, and Utah. It essentially serves as a reservation for the over 350,000 Navajo (or Dine, in their language) people who live there.

Navajo Nation leaders have increased restrictions in order to avoid this dire outcome.

The Navajo Nation has been under a shelter-in-place order since March 13, with a curfew since March 30, in an effort to slow travel, according to Jonathan Nez, president of the Navajo Nation.

The curfew lasts from 8pm to 5am and excludes essential employees travelling to and from work, though they must have documentation to justify their travel.

But Navajo leaders have reportedly criticised the wider effort to contain the virus, with some pointing to what they say was the delayed closure of the Grand Canyon National Park.

The Navajo Nation and county leaders lobbied for the Grand Canyon to close for weeks, as tourists who wish to see the East Rim of the park must drive through tribal lands. It was closed on Tuesday.

"The closure of the park took longer than it should've, but we're glad it's finally closed," Nez was quoted by local media as saying.

'Wipe out'

While the closure of the Grand Canyon is seen as a positive step, officials worry the coronavirus poses a serious threat to US Indigenous peoples.

New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham said she was "very worried" about the spikes in coronavirus cases on the Navajo Nation in a call with US President Donald Trump.

The pandemic "could wipe out those tribal nations", Lujan Grisham told ABC News earlier this week.

Police have reportedly started enforcing the curfew, driving through Navajo communities, stopping drivers and using intercoms to inform residents of Tuba City, Arizona that the lockdown was in effect.

While the curfew in the Navajo Nation is viewed as necessary by health and tribal officials, it could create challenges for Navajo citizens on tribal lands.

For example, there are only 13 full-service supermarkets on Navajo Nation lands, according to Partners In Health, a health advocacy organisation. Many people travel to so-called "border towns" such as Flagstaff, Arizona, or Farmington, New Mexico, for shopping.

The Navajo Nation also has a notable unsheltered population, which also lives in or around "border towns", where some face discrimination.

Al Jazeera contacted the Navajo Nation about efforts to address these challenges, but did not immediately receive a response.

Navajo Nation authorities and the Arizona National Guard have set up emergency centres that will help with medical and food aid, according to local reports.

Federal aid

The massive $2 trillion emergency coronavirus aid bill passed by Congress on March 25 allotted $64m to the Indian Health Service (IHS), the federal agency that oversees healthcare among tribal nations in the US.

The sum is designated for testing for the coronavirus, according to the bill.

Rear Admiral Michael D Weahkee, the IHS principal deputy director, said in a statement sent to Al Jazeera that Congress has passed further bills, including $1bn in funds to fight the coronavirus outbreak.

"IHS headquarters is working to get resources out to the front lines as quickly as possible. This week we held rapid tribal consultation and urban confer sessions to guide our distribution of $134 million in new resources to respond to coronavirus … in American Indian and Alaska Native communities.

"These funds will support IHS and tribal and urban Indian organizations in our response", Weahkee concluded.

Bill Gates: Here’s how to make up for lost time on covid-19

There’s no question the United States missed the opportunity to get ahead of the novel coronavirus. But the window for making important decisions hasn’t closed. The choices we and our leaders make now will have an enormous impact on how soon case numbers start to go down, how long the economy remains shut down and how many Americans will have to bury a loved one because of covid-19.

Through my work with the Gates Foundation, I’ve spoken with experts and leaders in Washington and across the country. It’s become clear to me that we must take three steps.

First, we need a consistent nationwide approach to shutting down. Despite urging from public health experts, some states and counties haven’t shut down completely. In some states, beaches are still open; in others, restaurants still serve sit-down meals.

This is a recipe for disaster. Because people can travel freely across state lines, so can the virus. The country’s leaders need to be clear: Shutdown anywhere means shutdown everywhere. Until the case numbers start to go down across America — which could take 10 weeks or more — no one can continue business as usual or relax the shutdown. Any confusion about this point will only extend the economic pain, raise the odds that the virus will return, and cause more deaths.

Second, the federal government needs to step up on testing. Far more tests should be made available. We should also aggregate the results so we can quickly identify potential volunteers for clinical trials and know with confidence when it’s time to return to normal. There are good examples to follow: New York state recently expanded its capacity to up to more than 20,000 tests per day.

There’s also been some progress on more efficient testing methods, such as the self-swab developed by the Seattle Coronavirus Assessment Network, which allows patients to take a sample themselves without possibly exposing a health worker. I hope this and other innovations in testing are scaled up across the country soon.

Even so, demand for tests will probably exceed the supply for some time, and right now, there’s little rhyme or reason to who gets the few that are available. As a result, we don’t have a good handle on how many cases there are or where the virus is likely headed next, and it will be hard to know if it rebounds later. And because of the backlog of samples, it can take seven days for results to arrive when we need them within 24 hours.

This is why the country needs clear priorities for who is tested. First on the list should be people in essential roles such as health-care workers and first responders, followed by highly symptomatic people who are most at risk of becoming seriously ill and those who are likely to have been exposed.

The same goes for masks and ventilators. Forcing 50 governors to compete for lifesaving equipment — and hospitals to pay exorbitant prices for it — only makes matters worse.

Finally, we need a data-based approach to developing treatments and a vaccine. Scientists are working full speed on both; in the meantime, leaders can help by not stoking rumors or panic buying. Long before the drug hydroxychloroquine was approved as an emergency treatment for covid-19, people started hoarding it, making it hard to find for lupus patients who need it to survive.

We should stick with the process that works: Run rapid trials involving various candidates and inform the public when the results are in. Once we have a safe and effective treatment, we’ll need to ensure that the first doses go to the people who need them most.

To bring the disease to an end, we’ll need a safe and effective vaccine. If we do everything right, we could have one in less than 18 months — about the fastest a vaccine has ever been developed. But creating a vaccine is only half the battle. To protect Americans and people around the world, we’ll need to manufacture billions of doses. (Without a vaccine, developing countries are at even greater risk than wealthy ones, because it’s even harder for them to do physical distancing and shutdowns.)

We can start now by building the facilities where these vaccines will be made. Because many of the top candidates are made using unique equipment, we’ll have to build facilities for each of them, knowing that some won’t get used. Private companies can’t take that kind of risk, but the federal government can. It’s a great sign that the administration made deals this week with at least two companies to prepare for vaccine manufacturing. I hope more deals will follow.

In 2015, I urged world leaders in a TED talk to prepare for a pandemic the same way they prepare for war — by running simulations to find the cracks in the system. As we’ve seen this year, we have a long way to go. But I still believe that if we make the right decisions now, informed by science, data and the experience of medical professionals, we can save lives and get the country back to work.

Seems like people in general aren't taking it serious, especially younger people. I've heard in places without lockdown people are still roaming around, going to stores in crowds. There is no way the virus will be contained this way.

I don't get why the US won't just follow New Zealand's example.

If the government won't do anything then the people should take responsibilty and stay home when possible, don't unnecessarily roam around, keep your distance from other people.

I dont buy that, people keep saying it was bound to happen is a easy cop out. Republican and their ideology of limited government invovlement got us to where we are. We were so slow to react and we're still hesistant to have a national shut down because of this philosphy. Free market and captalism won't do jack if the entire country is falling sick and we're in a free for all. This is the worst government we couldve asked for in this crisis. Them thinking sending $1200 checks is is going to solve anything is even more naive. Critical mistakes in the name of ideology and politics were made early and that is going to decide our fate.

The Zandaam Holland America cruise ship has docked in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and 14 critically ill passengers have been taken to local hospitals.

The Zandaam's other passengers were then allowed to leave after being screened by paramedics. Non-Floridians were transported directly to the airport.

According to the Associated Press, the first plane of passengers left for Toronto, Canada.

Four people died due to the coronavirus during the ship's journey, and hundreds were sick. Chile, Argentina and Peru had refused to let the ship dock, prompting the voyage up to Florida.

The Zandaam's sister ship, the Rotterdam, has also docked in Fort Lauderdale. Passengers without symptoms were moved earlier from the Zandaam to the Rotterdam in an effort to contain the virus' spread.

Poor guy is trying his best. The state of NY has more cases than any country in the WORLD (except Italy and Spain) and that too by a long shot.
 
One of the US's largest manufacturers, 3M, says it has been ordered by the White House to stop shipping N95 masks - disposable masks which filter out at least 95% of airborne particles - to Canada and Latin America.

US officials estimate the country will need 300m masks a month, but only about 50m are currently being produced.

On Friday morning, the company urged the Trump administration to reconsider the order, which was made using the Defense Production Act, citing "significant humanitarian implications" and expressing concern that other countries might retaliate.

In his daily press briefing, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said he was in contact with US officials and was trying to "make them understand".

“There are thousands of nurses in Windsor who work in Detroit every single day, and Americans depend on them. There are medical products and other essential goods that move across the border in both directions," he said.

“These are things Americans rely on and it would be a mistake to create blockages or reduce trade.”
