I am not sure it’s for Afghanistan, it might be for Iran. They’ve had to basically stop their current supply chain. Also, they’ve slashed their investment in Chahbahar port by 2/3rds even though they have a waiver to continue work there from the US govt (unfortunately for most of the world Trump is an unreliable partner, so India probably thought its better to wait out this presidency.
Having said that, the world is in flux since the US has turned isolationist, it started even before Trump.
Russia invaded Crimea and no one can do anything
US has basically shedded its fig leaf of impartiality in Israel Palestine but much of the Muslim world doesn’t care or actually works with Israel to suppress local dissidents: they buy their spying technology.
China and the Uighura
Myanmar and the Rohingyas
Syria is a free for all for anyone to invade
HK protests will be crushed brutally and we may even see moves on Taiwan
Same with UAE/Saudi and Yemen
Given this backdrop, I think India calculated that now is the right time to trigger this move.
Pakistan should focus on helping the US get out of Afghanistan and find a way to work with China in Iran. This will secure our eastern border. With that out of the way we can focus on highlighting every random atrocity in Kashmir as another holocaust
Strictly moral support.
