COVID-19 and the impact on cricket

Nothing was lost.

This series has been an absolute snooze fest.

Bangladesh and Afghanistan would have performed better than England.

Yawn, nobody cares about Covid anymore.

He should just play the remaining tests and live to tell the tale.

Who cares about this boring no contest series. It's good that the remaining matches get cancelled than to see England getting whipped again. That's like whipping a dead horse.

Blessing in disguise I would say.

Time for Cricket to move along with Covid

The current Big Bash League tournament has turned into a joke. Half of the current Melbourne Stars team are a bunch of grade Cricketers. This is all down to strict Covid protocols. All the players around the word cricket are vaccinated or really should be by now.

The Covid is now treated like the flu, so should Cricket move along normally with Covid rather than isolating every man and his dog for seven days once someone tests positive.

Agreed. Now that we have been double vaccinated, let's show the pandemic its place.

Agree… 2-3 vaccines each in a short space of time is a strong public health measure — one would hope that young fit men and women in elite athletic disciplines would be robustly protected by their vaccinations; therefore, now seems like a good time for a wider discussion to be held and for the covid protocols around the world to be reviewed… and let’s see what comes out of it.

BBL running into trouble:

Tonight’s KFC Big Bash League match between Brisbane Heat and Sydney Sixers at Metricon Stadium has been postponed.

Twelve Heat players today returned positive PCR tests for COVID-19 and are currently isolating. Despite its best endeavours, the Club was unable to recruit enough replacement players in the 24 hours since the first case was identified to make up the required squad of 13 for tonight’s match.

As COVID-19 cases in the country continue to increase at an alarming rate, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has also decided to give a booster dose of vaccine to all players.

Rapidly rising COVID-19 cases across the country may force the BCCI to reduce the number of venues for the upcoming white-ball series against the West Indies but the cricket body has not yet formally discussed options. The third wave of coronavirus is fast gripping the country and several states have introduced curbs, including weekend lockdowns, to prevent the spread of infection. India will host West Indies for six white-ball games -- three ODIs and as many T20Is -- at six venues, starting with the first 50-over match at Ahmedabad on February 6.

"Nothing has been decided as of now. This is a fluid situation and we are keeping an eye on the situation, and we will take a call at appropriate time," a senior BCCI official told PTI.

Apart from Ahmedabad, the other venues which are scheduled to host the matches are Jaipur (February 9), Kolkata (February 12), Cuttack (February 15) Visakhapatnam (February 18) and Thiruvananthapuram (February 20).

Given the current COVID situation in the country, the Board might look to host the six games at three centres to avoid too much travelling as it might make the players vulnerable to infections.

The West Indies team is scheduled to undergo a three-day isolation after landing in Ahmedabad on February 1.

There will be practice sessions on February 4 and 5 before the action begins with the first ODI at Motera on February 6.

The BCCI was recently forced to postpone major domestic tournaments including Ranji Trophy and the Col CK Naidu Trophy due to a surge in COVID-19 cases across the country.

Joint statement by Cricket West Indies and Cricket Ireland on postponement of 2nd CG Insurance ODI

KINGSTON, Jamaica – Cricket West Indies (CWI) and Cricket Ireland (CI) issued a joint statement after two further positive COVID-19 cases were reported in the Ireland camp following recent testing, and two players being ruled out due to injury, resulting in Ireland having a severely depleted squad.

The second CG Insurance One-Day International scheduled for Sabina Park on Tuesday, January 11 has therefore been postponed.

CWI and CI are in discussions to review the match schedule and are working to explore all possibilities for the series to be completed.

The five members of the Ireland team who have returned positive COVID-19 results remain in isolation under the care and supervision of the medical teams.

Further updates will be provided as soon as possible.

The staff member has been in isolation in accordance with state COVID management guidelines since the result of the test and will remain in Canberra when the group travel to Adelaide for the IT20 leg of the multi-format series.

The ECB medical team have been working alongside their CA counterparts to manage the situation. Additional testing and contact tracing has been undertaken and no additional positive cases have been reported.

A further round of routine PCR tests will be undertaken before the team fly by charter to Adelaide on Monday January 17.

Covid-19 in BCCI: Fifteen MCA staffers and at least three BCCI staff members have contracted COVID-19.

The third wave of COVID-19 had also affected BCCI housed in Cricket Centre in Mumbai. The building in the premises of the Wankhede Stadium that houses the headquarters of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) were shut in 2nd January due to multiple Covid cases.

Fifteen MCA staffers and at least three BCCI staff members had contracted COVID-19. The MCA office had been forced to down the shutter of its office for three days.

BCCI since than is operating with minimum staff at the office while the others are working from home.

“Yes, there have been a few positive cases as COVID19 cases are rising in Mumbai. 90 per cent of the staff are working from home, while a minimal staff is working from the Board office. The office is open though, we haven’t shut it,” A BCCI official told PTI.

It is also understood that all three BCCI staffers who have have been diagnosed COVID-19 positive – two from the finance department and one from cricket operations wing – have been isolated at home.

Due to Covid-19 related issues, BCCI had to postpone Ranji Trophy and other domestic tournaments indefinitely.

Earlier this month, BCCI President Sourav Ganguly was also hospitalised after testing positive.
