With a 4-1 series win looming, I think it's time to credit England on winning a hard fought series win against India. Ed Smith has backed the likes of Curran,Buttler and stuck with Stokes and given moeen his chance based on his recent county performances as well. And all of them have proven to be crucial to England's success! Kudos to England and English fans. James Robert

it was hard fought but they seldom looked like they would lose even the close games they stayed ahead of India and as soon as India tried to sneak they would shut the door.

Recalling Buttler to the Test team was a stroke of genius.

Smith I think is perhaps one of the first selectors to view Test Cricket with the same amount of flexibility as selectors/coaches view T20 cricket. That the side selected should be based on conditions and player attributes rather than more traditional test selections, where good home form/county form will mean players are automatically selected in all conditions.

His removal of Dawid malan while saying that he believes he can be successful away from home reminded me of how franchise T20 teams select players based on the opposition and grounds etc.

With the exception of jennings I like the way he is going so far.

Yep. But I think he will dispose of Jennings as well considering his failures here and maybe give burns a go. This team is probably the best he could have assembled in English conditions and he did a fantastic job. Let's see if he can do a similar job for away tours.

At home every team is winning i am not giving any credit to selector if they are able to win in upcoming series vs srilanka then you can appreciate him
At home even spin bowler j.yadav got hundred vs england yes buttlers real test in test cricket going to be in srilanka

England are still a poor team tbh and will struggle away from home now that Root is their only proper batsman.

Why is everyone acting like they won a away series this england team blanked in india by 4-0 atleast my team won a 1match

The scoreline really should have been 5-0 and all tests would have been finished within 3 days. The only way it was more competitive was bcz of the Indian bowlers , their performances with both the ball and their gutsy stay at the wicket , something the top order could not do. Anyways, batting was the main difference between the sides, the toss could have made it 3-2 but in the end fair result , losing 5 tosses in England is no joke but England deserves this, India lucky to escape 5-0 with this team selection

He said he will just select the best players and not worry about the batting order which is a worry but credit to him for selecting Buttler and Curran.

Ed Smith seems intent on turning the Test team into the one day team.

Selections of Roy and Buttler have backfired, while Joe Denly was a peculiar pick.

The problem for England is that whilst the approach of giving ODI stars a go in test match cricket is wrong, the cupboard is really bare in terms of batsman.

He picked Denly because he was mates with him at Kent. I had given him the benefit of doubt, but when both Bayliss and Root came out before this test that they wanted to see Roy in the middle order and Denly as opener, it quickly leaked to the press that Smith was pressuring the management to give Denly an extended run at 4. It's an understated example of the class nepotism that still prevails in old Blighty.
