Cricket Australia deny doctoring Perth wicket for second Test against India

In an embarrassing contradiction, Cricket Australia has denied requesting Perth’s Optus Stadium curator produce a lively deck for Friday’s second Test against India, as the home side attempt to level the series after losing the first Test in Adelaide on Monday by 31 runs.

Eyebrows were raised on Thursday when Perth’s curator Brett Sipthorpe revealed that he had been asked to produce a wicket which would offer plenty of pace and bounce.

“They want to see this place fly,” Sipthorpe told the West Australian.

“That’s like an early Christmas present for me. To get that fear in the eyes of the opposition turning up and seeing it fly ... beautiful.”

But in a Fairfax report, CA vehemently denied the suggestion they ordered a fast wicket, which would likely suit the home side, and said they worked with groundsmen across the country to ensure the unique qualities of each venue remained.

“We work with all of our venues to ensure pitches deliver a competitive match between ball and bat in all Test matches,” a CA spokesman told Fairfax.

“That we see different characteristics in our wickets across our country is unique in world cricket and we should celebrate this and give freedom to our curators to bring them to the fore.”

Such a wicket would usually suit the home side, whose players — unlike the tourists that have grown up on slower wickets that are more conducive to spin in the sub-continent — have grown up on fast wickets.

But with Australia missing three of its best batsmen due to CA’s decision to suspend Cape Town trio Steve Smith, David Warner and Cameron Bancroft, and India’s attack one of their best yet, it’s thought that the home side won’t benefit from a quick wicket like they usually might.

“Certainly from seeing the Indian attack in England and at the Adelaide Oval, Bumrah, Shami and Sharma will be going to bed tonight thinking thank you,” former England captain Michael Vaughan told reporters at a Fox Cricket event.

“The actual three quicks of India out bowled the three quicks of Australia. They were outstanding…It’s a big big risk that Australia are taking.

“They clearly need a pitch that they feel they can get at the Indian batsmen but I just look to the game at Adelaide Oval, it wasn’t the pitch, it wasn’t anything to do with the conditions. It was just that India produced more discipline for longer periods.”

It’s the first time a Test match will have been played at the venue, after the recently built Optus Stadium hosted a one day international for the first time earlier this year.

In the recent one day match between Australia and South Africa last month, the wicket was a throwback to the old WACA deck which — until recently — was known as one of the fastest in the world.

Friday’s wicket is expected to play similarly.

Nonetheless, Indian captain and star batsmen Virat Kohli didn’t bat an eyelid at the prospect of a quick wicket.

“I hope no more grass is taken off the pitch,” Kohli said. “Because that will mean the first three days will be very lively and we as a team are pretty happy with that.

“This pitch is going to offer significantly more to the bowlers than Adelaide.

“That’s something we’re very excited about.”

Why will the curator give such elaborate lies if he was not asked to doctor the pitch by CA? He is clearly admitting the orders given to him and his pride in his performance. Good to see at least media management work of CA is top notch with all the fast denials and all.

Doctor the pitch or not, India will probably land with 4 quality fast bowlers.

Much ado about nothing

If anything a fast bouncy pitch helps the Indians

LOL is this thread a joke? The home team, home pitch, when Australia go to England we don't complain

Nope, this thread is not a joke. This has become a news in all the news websites in Australia as the curator admitted he was ordered to deliver a certain pitch but CA has always tried to a maintain a facade that they don't doctor pitches like those filthy subcontinentals IND,PAK, SL etc. Even after this news broke on all Aus websites CA just issued denials.

Nothing wrong with making the pitch that suits the home team. However, the defensive attitude by denying it is because of years of Aussie fake moral high ground on all matters cricket. They fell flat after the ball tampering and had to over react with the one year bans.

Coz most Aussie fans always harped about how they never never doctor pitches lol ,that's why this is news.

Aus won the toss here and they are going to win the match.

They harped about a lot of things in past from their permanent camp at mt. Highground.

Curator can design the track however he wants as long as its safe to play.

Well, looks like they've doctored it anyway.

It's a concrete slab to make their batsmen look good.

Australia have made a signature Concrete Slab to make their Batsmen look good

250 plays 235 with the opposition winning the toss was always going to backfire on them. So why not have the likes of Finch, Marsh et al score runs the only time of the year they can on the usual 500 plays 475 pitches?

South Africa didn't across 3 tests. England didn't across 5 tests. But just a test into the series, Australia have reverted to their usual tactic.

Expect comparisons to Bradman in the Sydney Morning Herald tomorrow - whichever one of them makes a 100.

Their home pitch, their pitch. They have to get India out twice to win this test. So if this is a batting paradise as you say, then India should have no problem drawing the game. :wa

The problem is we are batting last and unlike last one indications are this will break and be an absolute minefield to play on last.

OP says this is a concrete slab, you say it will be a minefield later in the match, which one is correct.:jimmy

If concrete, then no need to worry, if minefield, then bat BIG in first innings :wa

i do not see it crumbling . Temperatures dropping sharply on day 2 & 3 and rain too is forecast . Hosts looking good for 425 or more thanks to our not playing a spinner .

What the heck are you talking about?

Cant you see the sideways movement the bowlers are getting? This is a very good trst match wicket

India will outscore them on a batting pitch.

Again the mistake as last test. Everyone said it was a flat patta, Aussies would score 400-500. Turned out to be an excellent wicket. This one too will quicken up as play goes on. 275-300 will be a very good first innings total here

Did you just see Vihari's delivery to get Harris out ... this is anything but a concrete slab and will break even more as time goes on.

Wkt is fine, there was little bit seam in morning and there is good carry. This is just sour grapes because India has picked the wrong bowling lineup for the surface.

Very likely Lyon and Cummins can win the game for Aus on this wkt provided batsmen give them scoreboard pressure to exert

I am finding it hard to judge this track, to be honest.

I can’t tell what a par score is.

My rule of thumb in such situations is to say that the second and third innings should cancel each other out.

So Australia basically need to score more runs today than India can score in the fourth innings. So probably a minimum of 280/300.

LOL at the Indians the pitch is already doing a lot, it's going to be a minefield, would hate to bat second on this pitch and the pitch has quickned up as well.

No problem, just stick to counting the crowd. The rest of us will do the actual cricket stuff.

Were the Indians tricked by Aussie media and administrators?

It's rightly said that cricket is a game being played off the field as much as on field. And the current on going test match between India and Australia is a perfect example. Here are a few reasons-

It all started with Justin Langer boasting about how difficult this pitch is going to play with extravagant pace and bounce.

The pitch curator then jumped on this comment and made clear that the match won't last the fifth day.

The colour of the pitch also gave it a deceptive look and far too green. Feeding thoughts into the Indian think tank that this is one with extravagant pace, bounce and seam.

To top ot all, the Aussie commies made it sound like a pace friendly wicket.

All these talks about the pitch days before the commencement of the match caught the Indian Team's attention. They reacted almost immediately by dropping Ashwin or any first choice spinner to create enough opportunities for fast bowlers.

Aussies in their mind were very clear in their mind about the pitch and they did not drop Lyon their spinner and only played 3 fast bowlers. They also had no second thoughts about batting first all giving the impression that Aussies knew everything about the pitch and just had it in their game plan to influence the Indians into stripping off their spin attack which could otherwise be lethal with cracks and inconsistent match.

The end result Aussies inclusive of their lower order made merry on this pitch scored a 300+ total. Indians too despite their brittle opening pair and non existent lower order had no issues with the pace and bounce and it turned out to be an ordinary pitch nowhere near to the spicy pitch that the Aussies speculated.

The difference between the two sides has been the team selection and inclusion of Lyon. Lyon showed what spin can bring in on this track with 5 wicket hall against supposedly best spin playing team.

If Australia go on to win this match and draw level, it would eventually come down to the mind games played before the match with their comments about the pitch thus influencing the team selection.

Brilliant display of mind games and the tactics. Your thoughts ?

I am not sure why my post as above has been merged with another thread when I had a different point to make.

My thoughts are if the media and Langer have some input into the selection of the Indian team then yes India were duped.

In reality though India have access to inspect the pitch, check recent results on this pitch and draw their own conclusions.

I wouldent call it brilliant games by the Aussies but poor match preparation by India if they have been influenced by the media, Langer and or groundsmen.

If India did go on what the Aussies were saying about the pitch they would know that the Aussies dont really know how the pitch will behave until they actually bowl on it.

Requesting admins to treat this as a different thread given this has a different perspective.

Lol India has enough experienced cricketers and back room staff to assess the pitch conditions. What the heck is Shastri being paid the highest salary in world Cricket for a coach for?

Firstly, no one knew how the pitch was going to play like. Aussies went for the safest option, which included one spinner. Indians went on the offensive expecting it to be a very fast pitch. It was not a 50:50 decision, i.e. going with a spinner was the right choice in any case. Just poor decision making from Kohli.

Secondly, the Indians do not get their information from the CA or Langer. They are grown ups and can make their decisions. Their decision, though incorrect was their decision. And they will pay for it with the match.

To be a cheer leader for this indian team and nothing else

This pitch doctoring drama is getting too far. All countries will produce wickets that suit their conditions and bowlers. ICC should get rid of the toss if home bullying is such a big concern. Variable conditions is one of the biggest attractions of cricket.

It's an awkward wicket, some steep bounce and fast but luckily not much seam movement which would have made it quite dangerous to be honest...

The point is that the Indian think tank which includes the captain himself, the coach and the support staff have been so naive and impractical with their team selection and this has been brutally exploited and exposed by the Aussies with their pre match propaganda of the pitch. They knew the Indian Team's weakness has been their team management and exploited it thoroughly. A clue for other teams due to host India in near future.

I don't see what the problem is. Home team, home pitch, home advantage.

Edit: pitch wasn't particularly fast and rather than being traditionally bouncy, it was uneven and poor.

Home team perfectly alright to prepare the wicket they want.

The only issue is when board, players, experts, fans and media from SENA countres deny ever preparing pitches suitable for home team. All teams do that, why shy away from admitting it.
