A man allegedly killed his wife before killing self in the Chamba district of Himachal Pradesh, police officials said on Wednesday.

The incident occurred in Dharwala area on Tuesday night. According to the preliminary investigations, the accused attacked his wife with a sharp weapon, after a heated argument over something, resulting in her death on the spot. Probe Agency ED Seizes Properties Worth Rs 10,000 Crore In Money Laundering Case

According to the agency, the attached properties located in SAS Nagar, Rupnagar, Zirakpur, and Mohali are linked to an alleged large-scale financial fraud.

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has provisionally attached 247 immovable properties worth Rs 10,021.46 crore in the PACL money laundering case, marking what is likely the highest single Provisional Attachment Order (PAO) in terms of both value and number of properties.

The action was taken by the Delhi Zonal Office-II under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), 2002. According to the agency, the attached properties located in SAS Nagar, Rupnagar, Zirakpur, and Mohali are linked to an alleged large-scale financial fraud involving a collective investment scheme operated by PACL Ltd. and its associated entities.

The probe is based on an FIR registered by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on February 19, 2014, following directions from the Supreme Court of India. The CBI subsequently filed a charge sheet and a supplementary charge sheet against 33 accused, including individuals and companies, for allegedly operating an illegal collective investment scheme.

Investigators allege that over Rs 48,000 crore was mobilised from lakhs of investors across India under the pretext of the sale and development of agricultural land. Investors were induced to invest through cash down payments and instalment plans and were made to sign agreements, powers of attorney and other documents. In most cases, the promised land was not delivered, and around Rs 48,000 crore remains unpaid.

Probe Agency ED Seizes Properties Worth Rs 10,000 Crore In Money Laundering Case

According to the agency, the attached properties located in SAS Nagar, Rupnagar, Zirakpur, and Mohali are linked to an alleged large-scale financial fraud.

On February 2, 2016, the Supreme Court directed the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) to form a committee under former Chief Justice RM Lodha to oversee the disposal of PACL's land and distribution of sale proceeds to investors. However, further investigation allegedly revealed continued illegal sale, encroachment and misuse of land acquired using investor funds.

Three additional FIRs were registered by the Punjab Vigilance Bureau in Jawahar Circle Police Station in Jaipur and Attibele Police Station in Bengaluru. Searches in these cases led to the seizure of blank sale deeds, signed cheque books and identity documents, indicating attempts to siphon and dispose of proceeds of crime.

The ED recorded an ECIR in 2016 and filed a prosecution complaint in 2018, followed by supplementary complaints in 2022, 2025 and 2026. The Special PMLA Court has taken cognisance of all complaints filed so far.

With this latest attachment, the total value of movable and immovable assets attached in the case has reached approximately Rs 17,610 crore, including properties in India and abroad. Further investigation is ongoing.

Jilted teen killed 34-year-old techie in Bengaluru, passed it off as death in fire. Then, police got a clue

The accused is the woman's neighbour and lives with his mother. Police said the crime stemmed from his ‘obsession’ with the woman.

What was initially considered to be an accident — death caused by suffocation due to the fire in the apartment — has turned out to be a case of murder in Bengaluru. An 18-year-old man has been held for the alleged killing of a 34-year-old software engineer.

The accused has been identified as 18-year-old Karnal Kurai, originally a resident of Kerala, HT reported earlier.

He is the neighbour of the deceased woman and lives with his single mother, according to report published by The Indian Express.

How it was passed off as death in fire

The victim had been living with her friend in an apartment at Subramanya Layout in Ramamurthy Nagar, Bengaluru. She was originally from Kavoor in Mangaluru. She worked for the IT firm Accenture and was alone at home as her roommate had gone to her hometown, according to a PTI report.

The incident occurred late on January 3, around 11pm, when a fire broke out in one of the rooms of the apartment, filling the house with thick smoke, HT reported.

Fire and emergency services rushed to the spot after neighbours alerted the police; doused the flames, and shifted the body for a post-mortem examination. At the time, investigators suspected that an electrical short circuit had caused the fire, and the death was by suffocation.

“At first glance, everything pointed towards an accidental fire caused by an electrical short circuit. There were no visible signs of foul play,” Ramamurthy Nagar police inspector GJ Sathish told HT.

However, the post-mortem report and analysis by the Forensic Science Laboratory indicated inconsistencies at the scene, prompting investigators to suspect that the fire had been deliberately set to destroy evidence.

Phone becomes key to cracking case

“As the investigation progressed, it became clear that this was not an accident but a planned murder made to look like a fire mishap. The accused attempted to create a false narrative of an electrical fire to mislead investigators,” Sathish said.
Though the post-mortem suggested the woman had died due to suffocation, there were also some fresh minor injuries on her body. Police said they couldn't find the woman's mobile phone, even though it was burnt.

Going through the technical evidence, police found the teenaged boy had been using her phone.

Police said the suspect was taken into custody and confessed to his crime.

"He told us that he entered the flat around 9 pm on January 3, as he was aware that her flatmate had gone to her home state. He managed to enter through the sliding window and demanded sexual favours from the woman. When she resisted, the suspect tightly held her mouth, and the victim became unconscious,” the officer was quoted as saying by Express.

He allegedly went to another room, gathered some clothes and other incriminating evidence, set them on fire, and fled with the mobile phone of the victim.

'Crime stemmed from obsession'

Police said that Kurai was the deceased woman's neighbour and had known her for nearly two years. Investigators believe the crime stemmed from his obsession for her.

“Evidence suggests the accused had planned the murder in advance and used fire as a cover-up,” the officer said, adding that the arrest was made on the basis of strong technical and circumstantial evidence.

Teen kills Bengaluru techie for refusing sexual advances; set house on fire to stage accident

It was initially suspected that she died due to suffocation from smoke, after a fire broke out at her two-bedroom flat, allegedly due to a short circuit, late on the night of January 3.

Bengaluru:
Bengaluru Police has arrested an 18-year-old teenager on murder charges in connection with the death of a 34-year-old woman software engineer, who was initially suspected to have died in a fire accident, at her apartment in the eastern part of the city.

The accused, identified as Karnal Kurrai, is a native of Kodagu district. The investigation revealed that the accused, who entered the woman's house with the intention of sexually assaulting her, allegedly strangled her to death and then set her house on fire to destroy evidence and make it appear like a fire accident.

Techie was found dead in her flat

The victim, DK Sharmila, who hailed from Dakshina Kannada, worked for a prominent tech company in Bengaluru. She was found dead on January 3 after a fire broke out in her flat at Subramanya Layout in the Ramamurthy Nagar police station limits of Bengaluru East, prompting investigators to suspect death due to suffocation from smoke initially. A detailed investigation later revealed that she had been murdered.

Her flatmate had gone to her hometown when the incident happened.

Based on a complaint from a close friend of the victim, Ramamurthy Nagar police registered a case of unnatural death. However, when the case was investigated further, a different truth emerged. Forensic officials found no evidence of an electrical fault, and the post-mortem report revealed that Sharmila died not from burns but from suffocation.

Based on technical evidence, the police traced Karnal Kurai, who is a PUC student and Sharmila's neighbor.

Teen entered the woman's flat through window

According to police, the suspect, who lived with his mother next door, allegedly entered the victim's flat through a siding window at around 9 pm on January 3. He allegedly asked her to cooperate sexually, to which she resisted. He is then said to have held her mouth and nose tightly, rendering her unconscious. She suffered a minor injury and was bleeding.

To conceal the crime, Kurai gathered her clothes and other belongings in the bedroom and set them on fire before fleeing with her mobile phone. Kurrai, a resident of Virajpet, lived in Bengaluru with his single mother.

Police arrested the accused on Saturday. He has been charged under sections 103(1), 64(2), 66, and 238 of the BNS (Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita). The accused will remain in police custody for three days while further investigation is underway.

Delhi: NRI doctor couple duped of over Rs 14 crore in 'digital arrest' cyber heist | Video

On December 24, 2025, the couple received a chilling call from fraudsters posing as law enforcement. Brandishing threats of arrest warrants, bogus lawsuits, PMLA violations, and money laundering charges, the scammers paralysed the Taneja's with fear.

New Delhi:
A retired NRI doctor couple, who spent nearly five decades serving at the United Nations in the US before returning to India, fell victim to a brazen cyber scam in Delhi, losing their life savings of Rs 14.85 crore. Cybercriminals held Dr Om Taneja and Dr Indira Taneja in a terrifying 17-day 'digital arrest' via relentless video calls, coercing massive bank transfers under threats of fabricated legal action. The shocking fraud, uncovered only after the couple approached police, highlights the ruthless evolution of digital extortion targeting vulnerable seniors.

Decades of service shattered

Dr Om Taneja and Dr Indira Taneja devoted 48 years to UN service in America, retiring in 2015 to embrace charitable work back home in Delhi. Unwittingly, their hard-earned nest egg became a target for sophisticated scammers. What began as a routine December evening turned into a prolonged ordeal, stripping them of their retirement security and leaving them in profound shock.

The trap springs: Fake arrest warrants and 17 days of terror

On December 24, 2025, the couple received a chilling call from fraudsters posing as law enforcement. Brandishing threats of arrest warrants, bogus lawsuits, PMLA violations, and money laundering charges, the scammers paralysed the Taneja's with fear. Keeping them glued to video calls from December 24 to January 10, 2026, the thugs orchestrated a 'digital arrest'- a tactic where victims are psychologically confined, believing real police are en route.

Dr Indira Taneja, who executed the transfers, recounted the manipulation- sums like Rs 2 crore or Rs 2.10 crore were demanded in rapid succession, funnelled into eight different bank accounts. Posing as SHOs, the crooks even rudely berated the couple over speakerphone, mimicking authentic police banter to deepen the deception.

Desperation peaks: Racing to the station, uncovering the mega fraud

Trapped in panic, Dr Indira rushed to their local police station, only to learn the horrifying truth- no warrants existed, and the 'officers' were fraudsters. The staggering Rs 14.85 crore loss emerged in full, a sum representing their lifelong toil. Devastated, the elderly duo now grapples with emotional trauma alongside financial ruin.

Swift police response: Cyber unit takes the reins

Recognising the case's gravity, Delhi Police handed the investigation to the Special Cell's IFSO cyber unit. Authorities are tracing the mule accounts, video call origins, and scam scripts, vowing to dismantle the syndicate. This incident underscores a surge in "digital arrest" rackets preying on NRIs and retirees, with warnings issued for citizens to verify calls independently and never transfer funds under duress.

Investigators revealed that Rachna Yadav was a key witness in her husband’s murder case. Preliminary suspicion points towards the same criminals being involved in her killing as well. However, Delhi Police said the case is being probed from all possible angles and no conclusion has been drawn yet.

A case has been registered under relevant sections of the law at the Shalimar Bagh police station, and teams have been formed to track down the suspects. Police are examining CCTV footage from the area and questioning people linked to both cases.

A family's relaxing weekend getaway at a luxurious five-star hotel in Jaipur took a frightening turn when two hotel staff members entered their occupied room unannounced. Janhavi Jain, a Delhi-based marketing professional, took to social media to share the incident, which terrified her six-year-old niece, who was left sobbing.

"On Monday evening, around 6:30-7:30 pm, two hotel staff members used a master key to enter one of our rooms. The room had already been cleaned. No one had asked for housekeeping. No one had been informed. My 6-year-old niece walked in right after and found two unknown adults inside the room. She ran out crying," wrote Jain on X (formerly Twitter).

As per Jain, the staffers were not wearing any named badges, which meant the family could not identify them. She questioned the privacy breach, stating what would have happened if someone had been showering or changing clothes.

"What if personal belongings had gone missing? What if my niece had gone missing? What if my niece were alone in the room and sexually assaulted by these men?" asked Jain.

The hotel refused to share CCTV footage of the incident, while the general manager simply shrugged off the incident saying: "So what if they entered."

"A child walked into a room with two unknown adults inside, and this was the response. We're not living in some ideal world. We hear about child sexual abuse, child trafficking, assault, all the time. Parents are already anxious about where their kids are, who they're around, and what spaces are actually safe.'

'Faced Same Issue'

As the post went viral, garnering over eight lakh views, social media users questioned the hotel management for not addressing Jain's concerns.

"We have faced the same issue. It had happened 3-4 times. Two times we were inside the room, and two times we were out," said one user, while another added: "This is terrible, did they respond after this post? I am a regular at Hyatt. So this is concerning."

A third commented: "As far as my experience goes, most hotels do a turn-down service of occupied rooms towards the evening. This is done as a matter of daily routine and not when asked only. From your description it seems like that is what was happening."

A fourth said: "Situation awareness is the key. It is an unsafe world out there; always be aware of your surroundings. Sadly there is not much accountability, and you will be considered at fault for raising such issues."

In an update reply, Jain stated that Hyatt Hotels CEO Mark Hoplamazian's team has reached out and is scheduled to follow up within 72 hours.

Chomu violence: FIR filed against 34, over 100 detained; authorities mull bulldozer action

According to officials, the incident is linked to the removal of large stones that had been lying for years outside the Qalandari Mosque near the Chomu bus stand, often causing traffic congestion. When the civic team arrived to carry out the removal, a group allegedly attacked the team with stones.

Jaipur:
FIRs have been filed against 34 individuals and over 100 people were detained after a police and civic administration team was reportedly pelted with stones in Jaipur’s Chomu area. Authorities indicated that bulldozer action against those involved may be considered as part of strict administrative measures.

The violence began outside a mosque and soon spread across the locality. Early Friday morning, heavy stone-pelting from the Pathan Mohalla area prompted swift police action, with the Rapid Action Force (RAF) also deployed to bring the situation under control.

During raids in Pathan Mohalla, a large police force was mobilised, and senior officials remained present on the ground. Police said efforts are underway to identify each stone-pelter and take legal action.

Internet services were suspended due to the violence but were restored on Sunday morning once normalcy returned.

According to officials, the incident is linked to the removal of large stones that had been lying for years outside the Qalandari Mosque near the Chomu bus stand, often causing traffic congestion. On Thursday, the municipal corporation held a meeting with the mosque committee, during which consent was reportedly given to remove the stones. However, when the civic team arrived to carry out the removal, a group allegedly attacked the team with stones.

Drone vigil reveals big planning

The Pathan Mohalla area is under strict surveillance, including the use of drones. Officials said drone footage revealed bricks, stones and bottles stored on rooftops of several houses. This, they claim, points to a premeditated attack, suggesting that the police and civic teams were deliberately targeted.

Authorities said the situation is now under control, and further legal and administrative steps will be taken based on ongoing investigations.

Asansol coal mine collapse: Three dead in illegal extraction amid mafia allegations | Video

Asansol coal mine collapse: Rescue operations kicked off swiftly, involving BCCL officials, police teams, and heavy machinery like JCB excavators. Poddar, present at the scene, witnessed the recovery of two additional bodies after the first one was retrieved.

Asansol:
A devastating coal mine collapse struck an open-cast mine in West Bengal's Asansol on Tuesday (January 13), trapping several workers engaged in illegal coal theft. The accident unfolded around 7:45 am in the Barira area under Kulti police station, West Burdwan district, at a site operated by state-owned Bharat Coking Coal Limited (BCCL). BJP MLA Ajay Poddar from Kulti confirmed that five people were initially trapped, with two rescued safely and three bodies recovered during the operation.

Workers had illegally entered the mine- often via dangerous rathole methods- to extract coal, a common but perilous practice in the region driven by economic desperation. The sudden landslide buried them under debris, sparking immediate chaos as locals rushed to the site.

Rescue efforts and casualties

Rescue operations kicked off swiftly, involving BCCL officials, police teams, and heavy machinery like JCB excavators. Poddar, present at the scene, witnessed the recovery of two additional bodies after the first one was retrieved. Two survivors were rushed to hospitals in critical condition, though exact details on their status remain pending.

Neither police nor mine authorities released official casualty figures initially, fueling uncertainty. The efforts highlighted the hazards of unregulated access, with locals alleging that Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) guards and mine operators often overlook such intrusions.

Official statements and allegations

District Magistrate Ponnamabalam S of West Burdwan stated, "An investigation is underway to determine what happened. We will be able to provide more details after the investigation is complete." In contrast, BJP MLA Ajay Poddar leveled explosive charges, alleging a "syndicate" involving police, central forces, and coal mafias. "They were extracting coal from rathole. This is a syndicate. Central force, Police and mafia is involved. It is the villagers who die. This is prevalent across Bengal," he told media. These claims point to systemic issues, with locals decrying long-standing illegal mining tolerated for livelihoods, despite known risks.

Local impact and broader context

A pall of gloom enveloped Kulti following the deaths, as families mourned amid accusations that mine authorities and Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) stayed silent despite awareness of intrusions. Residents, many from nearby villages, risk lives daily for coal scraps, evading security for survival in an area rife with theft from open-cast mines.

This tragedy echoes a November 15, 2025, stone mine collapse in Uttar Pradesh's Sonbhadra district, where 15 were trapped, seven bodies recovered, and operations concluded after NDRF/SDRF verification. Sonbhadra SP Abhishek Verma noted the operation's difficulty due to massive boulders, underscoring recurring mining safety

In his video, Shankar even alleged that the police have claimed that he and his team 'snatched' Rs 2 lakh from the producer and thrashed him. However, he said all these things are 'fabricated', and such an incident has never happened.

"The police issued summons in October end, and I replied stating that the said film producer had never visited my office or that I had sought money to remove a video that allegedly defamed him," Shankar said.

What political parties said on Shankar's arrest?

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has come to the defence of Shankar and slammed Chief Minister MK Stalin-led Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) government in the state. In a post on social media, BJP chief spokesperson Narayanan Thirupathi condemned Shankar's arrest and said the DMK has "unleashed repression and anarchy" in the state.

BJP leader Nainar Nagendran also hit out at the DMK and said the Stalin government is "strangling freedom of expression". "The arrest of journalist Savukku Shankar by the DMK government’s security forces by breaking down the door of his house with a rock is highly condemnable," he said.

The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), BJP's alliance partner, also condemned Shankar's arrest. Meanwhile, Congress MP Karti Chidambaram posted on X: "While I don’t subscribe to or endorse him, this repeated recurring arrests of Savukku Shankar is blatant harassment."

'Death Threats, Vandalism By Kuki Insurgents': Naga Body Files Police Case In Manipur

In the first information report (FIR) filed on Wednesday, the Ireng Naga Village Authority alleged that KNF/UPF insurgents came to the village and vandalised public property including a shed at a bus stop at 11.30 pm on January 11

Imphal:
A village authority of the Naga tribes in Manipur has filed a police case alleging death threats and vandalism by insurgents of the Kuki National Front (KNF) in their village in Kangpokpi district, 45 km from the state capital Imphal.

In the first information report (FIR) filed on Wednesday, the Ireng Naga Village Authority alleged that KNF/UPF insurgents came to the village and vandalised public property including a shed at a bus stop at 11.30 pm on January 11.

The insurgents also "defaced the village memorial stone by writing 'Kukiland' and 'Stay Away'... acts [that] amount to criminal trespass, mischief, and deliberate ethnic intimidation," the Naga village authority said in the FIR.

NDTV has seen a copy of the FIR.

The UPF is short for United People's Front, one of the two umbrella groups of insurgents that signed the tripartite suspension of operations (SoO) agreement with the Centre and the state government. The KNF is a part of the UPF.

"On 12 January 2026, after villagers held a peaceful road blocked seeking protection, one Tiger Kipgen (Thangboi/Haogenthang Kipgen), reportedly a KNF commander, contacted the village chairman via WhatsApp and mobile calls at 12.05 pm and issued explicit threats of open gunfire and burning down the entire village," the Ireng Naga Village Authority said in the FIR.

"Later, on the same day, at about 2.01 pm, 30-40 heavily armed cadres were sighted advancing towards the village, causing panic and fear of imminent attack," it said.

The villagers said the incident was a clear violation of the SoO agreement's ground rules.

The villagers said the incident was a clear violation of the SoO agreement's ground rules.

Latest and Breaking News on NDTV

The SoO agreement was first formally signed in 2008. Every year, a joint monitoring group reviews the agreement and decides its future. Broadly, the SoO agreement says the insurgents are to stay at designated camps and their weapons kept in locked storage, to be monitored regularly. It was last extended for a year in September 2025.

'Indefinite Bandh'

Another Naga civil society group, the Foothills Naga Coordination Committee (FNCC), has confirmed support for an "indefinite bandh" called by the Joint Tribe Council. The FNCC in a statement said the authorities have not kept their word on commitments made in previous meetings.

In August 2025, following protests by the FNCC, the Manipur government held a meeting with the civil society organisation's representatives in Imphal. A post-meeting statement said it was clarified that the state government had not approved or sanctioned any road called 'Tiger/German road' as pointed out by the FNCC.

"Necessary legal action will be taken after verifying the status of such illegal constructions/naming, if any on ground, will not be permitted," a statement signed by leaders of four tribal organisations of the FNCC and Manipur home secretary N Ashok Kumar had said.

The areas that 'German/Tiger Road' pass are not far from some designated camps of Kuki insurgent groups under the SoO agreement. The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has stopped the illegal work on this so-called road that passes through forests.

The Indigenous Peoples Forum, Manipur (IPFM) has also strongly condemned what it called the continued curtailment of the constitutional and fundamental rights of the indigenous peoples of Manipur due to the impunity granted under the SoO agreement.

"The recent incident involving the Liangmai indigenous community of Ireng Naga village (Puilong), Kangpokpi district, is a glaring example of this grave injustice. Armed cadres of the Kuki National Front operating under the UPF, and purportedly bound by the SoO agreement, allegedly vandalised public property, desecrated village memorials with provocative and divisive slogans such as 'Kukiland' and 'Stay Away... Such acts constitute blatant violations of the SoO ground rules and amount to criminal intimidation and terror against indigenous people," the IPFM said in a statement to the media.

Thadou Tribe Condemns Incident

The Thadou Human Rights Advocacy in a statement said it unequivocally condemns the government for its failure to enforce the SoO agreement.

"This abdication of responsibility has once again directly enabled armed intimidation, vandalism, death threats, and territorial aggression against indigenous communities of Manipur," the civil society organisation of the Thadou tribe said.

"We demand the immediate disarming and prosecution of all SoO cadres involved in the Ireng Naga attack and threats; the suspension of the SoO agreement until credible enforcement mechanisms are implemented; and the deployment of neutral security forces to protect all indigenous communities without bias," it said.

A theft had occurred at the Sri Venkateshwara Swamy Temple in Hyderabad on the intervening night of January 6 and January 7, following which the police launched a probe. During the preliminary investigation, it was found that the thieves broke into the sanctum sanctorum and fled with valuable items.

Cruise Operator Fined Rs 5,000 For Dumping Sewage In Ganga In Varanasi

District Magistrate Satyendra Kumar said action was taken after a video went viral showing sewage flowing into the Ganga from a valve of the cruise.

The district administration here on Wednesday imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 on the Alaknanda cruise for allegedly polluting the Ganga river, officials said.

District Magistrate Satyendra Kumar said action was taken after a video went viral showing sewage flowing into the Ganga from a valve of the cruise.

A probe was conducted by a committee formed by the municipal corporation, which submitted its report to the administration.

According to the report, the cruise was stationed for routine maintenance at the time of the incident and cleaning of the septic tank and sewerage system had been carried out.

The cruise management told the committee that the discharge was from an emergency valve that was being inspected, during which a staff member used a toilet, causing sewage to flow directly into the river instead of the septic tank.

Based on the findings, the district administration imposed a fine on the operating company, the district magistrate said, adding that the Pollution Control Board has also issued a notice seeking an explanation.

He directed the cruise management to install a separate tank for the emergency valve to ensure that the Ganga is not polluted under any circumstances in the future.

Two Die After Consuming Sweets From Unclaimed Bag In Madhya Pradesh

Police continue to probe angles like what was in the sweets that rendered the seven people who ate them severely ill, and also who left them outside the PHED office.

Two people have died after eating sweets found outside a government office in Madhya Pradesh's Chhindwara, months after the 24 children in the district died from poisoning after consuming a cough syrup.

Last week, the on-duty security guard at Public Health Engineering Department (PHED) office found an unclaimed bag of vegetables and sweets outside the premises. Hours after he ate some of the sweets, 50-year-old Dasaru Yaduvanshi was rushed to the hospital with severe vomiting and diarrhoea. On January 11, two days after he consumed the sweets, he died during treatment.

A day after Yaduvanshi consumed the sweets, the family of a nearby tea stall owner also consumed them. By January 11, 72-year-old father Sunder Lal Kathuria, his wife, two daughters, daughter-in-law and granddaughter were rushed to the hospital with the same symptoms - violent vomiting, diarrhoea and weakness.

While some of his family members recovered and some are still undergoing treatment, Kathuria died.

Police continue to probe angles like what was in the sweets that rendered the seven people who ate them severely ill, and also who left them outside the PHED office. "The autopsy report has been inconclusive. The viscera has been preserved and sent to the forensic science lab. Samples of the sweets have also been sent to the food testing laboratory to find out whether they were contaminated or deliberately poisoned," said Junnardeo police station in-charge Rakesh Singh Baghel.

2 Arrested For Trying To Sell Child In Kolkata, 5-Year-Old Rescued: Cops

The accused have been identified as Ranjeet Shah alias Neeraj Beldar (29) and Kajal (29), both from Khagaria district in Bihar, and two mobile phones have been seized from them, a senior police officer said.

New Delhi:
Delhi Police has rescued a five-year-old kidnapped boy and arrested two people, including a woman, for allegedly planning to sell the child in Kolkata, an official said on Thursday.

The accused have been identified as Ranjeet Shah alias Neeraj Beldar (29) and Kajal (29), both from Khagaria district in Bihar, and two mobile phones have been seized from them, a senior police officer said.

During interrogation, the accused confessed to kidnapping the child with the intention of selling him for easy money.

Kajal told the investigators that she conspired with Ranjeet Shah, who planned to sell the child for Rs 1 lakh by falsely claiming to be the child's parents.

Police said the accused travelled to Patna and later to Kolkata after the kidnapping, where attempts were made to sell the child, but the deal did not materialise.

They were arrested while trying to make attempts to sell the child during their onward journey, the officer said.

According to police, Asad (5) was kidnapped from his residence in Shakurpur in northwest Delhi on January 9. Police registered a case on the complaint of Asad's father, Mohd Sahid (38).

Three teams were constituted to crack the case, the officer said. While scanning CCTV camera footage from the area, police noticed a woman suspect moving with the child and repeatedly making phone calls.

Further investigation helped police identify the person she was in contact with as Ranjeet Shah, whose location was traced to Khagaria in Bihar, the officer said.

A team was dispatched to Khagaria, which arrested Ranjeet Shah from a moving bus.

Meanwhile, call detail records and technical inputs suggested that the woman accused was travelling by train with the child.

Accordingly, a team was sent to the Kanpur Central railway station, which found that the woman and the child were on board the Vaishali Express.

The woman was finally arrested, and the child rescued, in a coordinated operation when the train reached the Tundla railway station in Uttar Pradesh, police said.

The successful operation was the result of sustained efforts involving CCTV footage analysis, technical surveillance and interstate coordination across Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and West Bengal, the officer said.

Drunk Excavator Operator Goes On Rampage In UP, Runs Over Parked Cars

On CCTV, the driver was seen losing control of the heavy machine and smashing multiple four-wheelers along the road.

A Poclain (excavator) operator, who was allegedly in a drunken state, ran over half a dozen parked vehicles in Uttar Pradesh's Deoria on Tuesday evening.

On CCTV, the driver was seen losing control of the heavy machine and smashing multiple four-wheelers along the CC Road near the Hanuman Temple at 7:50 pm.

Abhishek, an eyewitness, told NDTV, "The Poclain driver ran over four to five vehicles. As he was moving the machine from side to side, chaos broke out at the spot."

In the video, multiple people ran up to the driver and asked him to turn off the engine. The operator, who appeared to be unaware of what was happening around him, almost killed a man sitting inside a car.

The crowd was seen rushing to the man in a black SUV and taking him out of the vehicle before the machine smashed its bonnet.

Some were seen attempting to climb onto the machine to pull the driver out. While one attempt failed, another person managed to get close, but the driver suddenly restarted the machine, briefly pushing the man before turning the front of the vehicle towards the crowd.

Passersby ran in different directions, while some two-wheeler riders were seen diverting onto the footpath to escape.

Another eyewitness, Rakesh, said, "I was going to buy food for my dog when I saw the Poclain standing in the middle of the road and hitting several vehicles as if it was intentionally crashing into something."

Soon after receiving the information about the accident, the police reached the spot, detained the driver, and seized the machine. An investigation is underway to determine the exact circumstances of the incident.

Haryana Police Remove 67 Songs Promoting Gun Culture From Digital Platforms

The official sources said some songs sung by Haryanvi rappers are among the 67 songs, which were removed during the past nearly one year.

Sixty-seven songs promoting gang lifestyle and glorifying weapons and violence have been removed from digital platforms, the Haryana Police said in a statement on Tuesday.

"The action taken against 67 songs is part of a larger campaign, and further strict action will continue," Haryana Director General of Police (DGP) Ajay Singhal said.

The police in its statement did not name the songs that have been taken down.

However, the official sources said some songs sung by Haryanvi rappers are among the 67 songs, which were removed during the past nearly one year.

In February 2025, the Haryana Police had initiated action against songs that allegedly promote gun culture, "glorify" violence, and incite hatred.

Accordingly, the initiative brought singers, social media, and other such platforms under the lens.

The Haryana Police, particularly its cybercrime unit's teams monitor social media and take appropriate action where required.

Notably, in March 2025 alone, more than 10 songs were taken down from various social media platforms, with few of them sung by popular Haryanvi singer Masoom Sharma.

The Haryana Police had then maintained that some of his tracks promote gun culture.

In his reaction, Sharma earlier said, "There are so many songs of other artists which have not been pulled down from social media. If the government has started from me, it is good, but the action should be fair." Meanwhile, the Haryana Police statement on Tuesday said, in a major crackdown against gang culture and the glorification of weapons and violence, the Special Task Force (STF) and Cyber Unit of Haryana Police have carried out a landmark operation that has significantly reshaped the digital space.

During an extensive investigation, the STF and cyber teams found that several songs were influencing youth, glorifying gangsters, and portraying an unrealistic image of luxury associated with criminal life, thereby pushing young people toward crime, according to the statement.

Responding to this alarming trend, the Haryana Police acted against 67 objectionable songs available on social media platforms.

"As a result, most of the content has either been removed or blocked," the statement read.

The Haryana Police made it clear that this is only the beginning and more stringent actions will follow against such content.

DGP Singhal termed the action a crucial step taken in the interest of society and the younger generation.

He said that the Haryana Police's objective is not merely to stop criminal activities, but also to save young people from stepping into the world of crime.

The DGP emphasised that such songs project criminals as role models and showcase a glamorous lifestyle that is far from reality.

Often, the families of the criminals also suffer because of their criminal activities, he said.

The DGP reiterated that the police has adopted a clear and firm policy -- no platform will be allowed to host content that promotes crime culture.

The action taken is part of a larger campaign, and further strict action will continue, he said.

He also appealed to artists and content creators to act responsibly and avoid producing content that misleads the youth.

STF IG Satheesh Balan said that considering the increasing influence of digital content on the youth, the police have also held discussions with singers, lyricists, and creators, advising them not to glorify violence, gangster elements, or weapons. Such content spreads fear, fuels criminal tendencies, and promotes insecurity in society, Balan said.

He added that STF and cyber teams are also closely monitoring people who like or share posts of criminals on social media.

Gangsters often use such platforms to lure and recruit youth into their networks, pushing them toward a destructive path. The police aim to prevent this and guide the youth to use their talent for productive and nation-building activities instead of contributing to criminal ecosystems, he said.

Parallel to the digital crackdown, Haryana STF has achieved significant successes in dismantling the terror-gangster nexus operating through foreign handlers.

Intelligence-based operations have exposed several modules using local networks to further terror-linked activities, the Haryana Police said.

The Haryana STF's dual approach -- curbing gang culture on digital platforms and simultaneously dismantling the terror-gangster nexus -- is proving to be a milestone in enhancing internal security in the state, it said.

'Zubeen Garg Was Intoxicated, But Made To Drink A Lot': Assam Cops On Motive

'Zubeen Garg Was Intoxicated, But Made To Drink A Lot': Assam Cops On Motive

"People who were responsible for him [Zubeen Garg] such as the agent and manager, organisers, these accused people failed him," Assam special DGP and SIT head MP Gupta told NDTV

Guwahati:
The Assam special investigation team (SIT) that is looking into the death of singer and cultural icon Zubeen Garg has announced similar findings as the police in Singapore, but has also added that there could have been a motive behind the singer being served a lot of alcohol.

The police in Singapore had told a local court there that Zubeen Garg entered the waters off Lazarus Island without a life jacket and drowned. His body had alcohol over four times the legal limit, with toxicology detecting hypertension and epilepsy medication, but no other drugs.

The Assam SIT said it found a very high level of alcohol in the singer's body, but added murder charges because it suspected there could have been a motive behind making the singer drink a lot.

Zubeen Garg died in Singapore in September last year.

"While we would not comment on the investigation in Singapore, we have completed our investigation and we have submitted our chargesheet. It's in court and it's sub-judice," Assam special DGP and SIT head MP Gupta told NDTV.

"We have gone into much depth and we also found that blood alcohol level was extremely high. It was so high that in that situation a person would lose control of bodily movement and his mental faculties would not be safe," Gupta said.

"People who were responsible for him such as the agent and manager, organisers, these accused people failed him," the officer said.

Zubeen Garg's wife, Garima Saikia, in a post on social media said the family's pursuit of truth has been lawful, relentless and ongoing across jurisdictions. She said concerns arose only after videos from the yacht surfaced on social media, days after the incident.

A first information report (FIR) was then filed in Assam, followed by the SIT's formation. The Assam Police's chargesheet ran into 2,500-pages and had charges including murder.

The family said the Singapore authorities began proceedings on their own after the incident, with the Indian High Commission coordinating legal and post-mortem processes. They said all communication with Singapore Police was carried out formally and was not made public during the investigation period.

Referring to the coroner's court proceedings, the family said questions were placed on record regarding safety arrangements on the yacht, Zubeen Garg's physical condition, the sequence of events before he entered the sea, the response when he showed visible distress, and the timing and adequacy of medical assistance.

The family appealed to the central and the Assam governments to closely monitor the proceedings in Singapore and ensure that all facts are placed before the court. Reiterating that they have explored every lawful avenue, the family said their pursuit of justice remains unwavering.

The SIT says their investigation is watertight.

"There are acts of omission and illegal acts of commission. They invited him to jump into the water. The accused persons fully knew the medical advice given by doctors. They gave him more alcohol even after he was drunk," Gupta said.

"We have found how his manager misappropriated a large sum of money from Zubeen's income. He had reasons to act against Zubeen Garg. We have gone into minute by minute happenings after Zubeen Garg landed in Singapore. We have also done an investigation into what happened in Zubeen Garg's life ahead of going to Singapore," the police officer said.

Rs 1,000-Crore Illicit Funds Routed Via Mule Accounts, CBI Charges 19

The agency has taken action on the basis of its preliminary enquiry, which exposed 13 mule accounts opened in the names of non-existent companies using forged documents, they said.

New Delhi:
The CBI has registered an FIR against a branch head of Punjab & Sind Bank and 18 others for allegedly opening mule accounts which were used to conceal and layer funds over Rs 1,000 crore generated from cybercrime and other illicit activities, officials said Friday.

The agency has taken action on the basis of its preliminary enquiry, which exposed 13 mule accounts opened in the names of non-existent companies using forged documents, they said.

The agency found that several individuals arranged forged and fabricated KYC documents, false rent agreements and other fabricated supporting documents used for opening the accounts in the bank's Government Girls Senior Secondary School Branch in Rajasthan's Sriganganagar. Vikas Wadhwa was the head of that branch.

"The said accounts were allegedly opened with the connivance and criminal conspiracy of unknown bank officials, violating KYC norms, due diligence requirements and standard operating procedures," the agency has alleged in the FIR.

A mule account - set up using falsified identification documents - is primarily used to move or launder illicit money, with or without the knowledge of the individuals whose details have been used to open the account.

"Fake site visit reports and business verification were created by the bank officials to facilitate opening of these current accounts in the names of fictitious firms," the agency FIR alleged.

The central probe agency said all the 13 firms in whose names the said current accounts were opened were non-existent and created solely to open and operate these current accounts using forged and fabricated documents.

It is further revealed that significant transactions worth thousands of crores of rupees were routed through these mule accounts through various banking channels and digital platforms, the FIR alleged.

"These accounts were subsequently used to route, layer and transfer proceeds of cyber-crime and other illicit activities. The transaction amount involved...is about Rs. 1084.00 crore," the agency alleged.

The CBI said accused persons, including Wadhwa, made illicit gain for themselves and corresponding "wrongful reputational loss" to the Punjab & Sind Bank.

"Besides this, if the allegations of money laundering are made out, the accused persons have also exposed the bank to the risk of penalties, thereby placing the bank in a position where it is likely to suffer financial loss on account of such penalties as well," the CBI FIR alleged.

16-Year-Old Stripped And Paraded Naked For 1.5 km By Girl's Family In Ujjain

Police officials said the minor had been in a relationship with a girl of the same age. The two had eloped three months earlier, but later surrendered at a police station

An incident highlighting mob justice and public humiliation has sparked outrage in Madhya Pradesh's Ujjain, after a 16-year-old boy was allegedly stripped naked, tied with ropes, and paraded for approximately 1.5 km by members of a girl's family.

The incident, which occurred on Thursday, came to light on Friday after a video was widely shared on social media.

Police officials said the minor, a resident of Panwasa on Maksi Road, had been in a relationship with a girl of the same age from the same locality. The two had eloped three months earlier, but later surrendered at a police station. The boy claimed he was sent to jail while the girl was placed in a juvenile home. After his release about a month later, he moved to Dewas, along with his specially abled mother, to live with his aunt.

On Thursday, his mother's health suddenly worsened, prompting the boy to return to the Shri Synthetics area in Ujjain to meet a friend and arrange funds for her treatment. It was here that the girl's family allegedly ambushed him.

The teenager alleged that Bhola Bairagi, Seema Bairagi, Rahul Bairagi, Rudraksh Bairagi, and Vishnu Bairagi brutally assaulted him, tore off his clothes, tied his hands with a rope, and paraded him naked from the Shankarpur area to the Panwasa police station. The group reportedly threatened to kill him if he ever returned to Ujjain. The boy said he pleaded for help from onlookers, but no one intervened.

On Friday, the teenager and his disabled mother approached the Ujjain Police Control Room to file a complaint.

Additional Superintendent of Police Alok Sharma said four individuals were involved in stripping and publicly parading the 16-year-old minor. "An FIR has been registered and all four accused have been arrested," he said.

A 27-year-old Hyderabad woman allegedly poisoned her 11-month-old son before dying by suicide at her Meerpet home, with police probing marital disputes as the possible trigger.

A 27-year-old woman in Hyderabad allegedly poisoned her 11-month-old son before dying by suicide at their residence near Meerpet on Friday, police said. The woman, identified as Sushmitha, was reportedly facing marital discord with her husband, Yashwanth Reddy.
According to the police, Sushmitha is suspected to have administered poison to her infant son, Ashwanth Nandan Reddy, before taking her own life. The incident as per a report by Times of India, came to light when her sister-in-law, Lalitha (45), discovered the bodies.
Lalitha allegedly attempted suicide after the discovery and was rushed to a local hospital, where she is currently undergoing treatment.

A complaint has been filed by Sushmitha’s uncle, Bitha Sanjeeva Reddy. Police have registered a case and said an investigation is underway to ascertain the exact circumstances that led to the deaths and whether there were any warning signs prior to the incident. Forensic teams have collected samples from the house, and postmortem examinations are being conducted to establish the exact cause of death.

The case has revived memories of a similar incident reported in 2024 from Medchal district, where a 30-year-old woman allegedly fed a poison-laced soft drink to her six-year-old son before consuming it herself. In that case, police said the woman was suffering from depression after her husband had walked out on her four years earlier. The child died, while the woman was admitted to the ICU.
According to Medchal police, the woman in that case also had health complications. “She mixed poisonous substances in a soft drink and first offered it to her son before consuming it herself. After her family noticed them unconscious, they were rushed to a nearby private hospital, where the doctors declared the boy dead,” the police had said. How Mumbai Criminal Used Sunny Deol’s Famous Dialogue ‘Sorry Bol’ To Snatch Chains in Borivali

In Mumbai, a habitual offender used a method inspired by a Bollywood dialogue to execute chain-snatching crimes. Sadik Mohammed Akhtar Khan, known for his previous offenses, would create staged confrontations in crowded areas, demanding apologies while stealthily snatching gold chains. His tactics involved using aggressive behavior to distract victims, making the theft appear seamless.

Mumbai: A Bollywood punchline has leapt off the screen and onto Mumbai’s streets — with crime as the plot twist. Inspired by actor Sunny Deol’s popular “Sorry bol” dialogue from the film Jatt, a habitual offender allegedly turned filmi aggression into a chain-snatching trick, using staged arguments to distract pedestrians before stealing their jewellery, as per a Mid-day report.
Police said the accused would deliberately bump into people in crowded areas, trigger a confrontation, aggressively demand an apology, and then quietly snatch gold chains in the chaos before vanishing into the crowd. The unusual modus operandi came to an end after the Kasturba Marg police arrested the suspect, bringing a dramatic halt to what officers describe as a crime spree straight out of a movie script.

How the ‘Sorry Bol’ Trick Worked

Police explained that the accused would first approach pedestrians randomly on busy streets and position himself close enough to create contact.

He would then push the victim and immediately start arguing, repeatedly shouting “sorry bol”, forcing the person to apologise. As the argument escalated, he would block the victim’s path, grab their collar or behave aggressively, ensuring the victim remained focused on the confrontation.

Moments later — while the victim was distracted, confused or intimidated — he would swiftly yank the gold chain and flee.

Accused Identified as History-Sheeter From Bhiwandi

Police identified the accused as Sadik Mohammed Akhtar Khan (36), a resident of Bhiwandi, calling him a known offender with a long criminal record.
Officers said Khan intentionally created confrontations to buy himself a few seconds — just enough to remove jewellery unnoticed, as per the report.

Borivli Incident: Victim Realised Chain Missing Moments Later

One of the reported cases was filed by a 43-year-old private company employee from Borivli East.
According to his statement, the incident happened on December 13, at around 7.20 pm, when he was walking home from Borivli station. Near SBI Bank at Raidongri, Dattapada, an unknown man suddenly pushed him and accused him of not apologising.
The accused allegedly forced him to say “sorry”, blocked his way when he attempted to leave, and grabbed his collar while continuing the argument. After the man finally moved away, the complainant realised his gold chain worth around Rs 90,000 was missing.
Suspecting theft during the staged altercation, he approached police and lodged a complaint. A case was registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including Section 303(2).

  • Chembur

Police said Khan had earlier served an eight-year prison sentence under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA). Most of his previous offences involve chain-snatching and theft, and investigators suspect he may be linked to similar cases across the city.

Body Kept in ‘Blue-Box’, Parts Burned Day-by-Day: Retired Officer Kills 30-Years-Younger Live-in Partner

A retired railway employee in Jhansi allegedly murdered his 32-year-old live-in partner and attempted to destroy evidence by burning her body parts over several days before being caught.

A chilling crime has shaken Jhansi, revealing a disturbing trail of brutality, secrecy and calculated attempts to destroy evidence that took place over several days inside a rented house.
Police say a 64-year-old retired railway employee, Ram Singh Parihar, also known as Brijbhan, allegedly murdered his live-in partner, a woman 32 years younger than him, and then tried to erase all traces of the crime by burning her body parts one by one. The victim has been identified as Preeti, aged 32.

Murder Hidden Inside Rented House

According to investigators, Ram Singh had been living with Preeti in a rented house in the Brahmnagar area under Sipri Bazar police station limits. He had taken the house on rent barely 20 days before the crime came to light. The two had been in a relationship for nearly a decade and were living together without marriage. Ram Singh already had two wives.

Police believe the murder took place around seven days before it was detected. After allegedly killing Preeti, the accused cut her body into several pieces and wrapped them in a tarpaulin. In a horrifying attempt to destroy evidence without attracting attention, he allegedly burnt one body part every day on a stove inside the house so that the smell would remain confined indoors, a report by Dainik Bhaskar reported.
Investigators said the accused planned the disposal carefully and continued living in the house while carrying out the act, attempting to ensure neighbours did not suspect anything unusual.

Blue Box

On Saturday night, the accused reportedly decided to dispose of the remains. After failing to fit the body parts into a drum, he packed partially burnt remains, bones and ashes into a blue box. He then hired a loader auto for Rs 400 and transported the box with the help of his son and others. The box was taken to a locality where his second wife lives.
Suspicion was raised when a foul smell began emanating from the box and liquid started leaking out. Local residents and the auto driver alerted the police around 2 am. By the time officers reached the spot, the accused had fled.

When police opened the box, they found partially burnt human remains inside, leaving officers and residents stunned.
The auto driver, Jai Singh Pal, told police, “I was paid Rs 400 to transport the goods. Four people came with a box and loaded it into the vehicle.”
Police detained the accused’s son and others for questioning. The victim was later identified, who had earlier left her husband and children and had been living with Ram Singh.
SP City Preeti Singh said, “The main accused, Ram Singh Parihar, has been taken into custody and is being questioned. Preeti was his third partner, and the two had been in a relationship for the past 10 years.”
Police are continuing their investigation to reconstruct the sequence of events and establish the motive behind the killing.

In a shocking incident of honour killing, a 27-year-old Muslim man and his 22-year-old Hindu girlfriend were brutally murdered and buried in a shallow grave at Umri Sabzipur in Uttar Pradesh’s Moradabad district. According to reports, the brutal act was carried out by the girl’s brothers, who were opposed to their relationship.

Police identified the youth as Arman, who worked in Saudi Arabia, before relocating to Moradabad a few months ago. It is said that he met and fell in love with Kajal Saini around this time. Kajal’s brothers did not approve of their interfaith relationship and repeatedly pressured her to end it.

About three days ago, Armaan suddenly disappeared. Armaan's father, Hanif, filed a missing persons report at the police station. When the police began investigating, they discovered that Kajal was also missing from home, after which suspicion fell on her brothers.

In a shocking video, a man from Meerut, UP, was seen confessing to killing his wife's lover, while showing no remorse for it. The viral video showed the man riding a two-wheeler while recording the confession video, saying that he will kill his wife, too.

A man allegedly shot a 28-year-old man in Uttar Pradesh's Meerut, claiming that he was his wife's lover. Traffic Fine Deducted Automatically From Bank? Hyderabad Commuters Might Face This — What Could Be the Pros and Cons

Hyderabad citizens are reacting strongly to Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy's proposal for auto-debiting traffic fines from bank accounts, raising concerns about legality, ethics, and due process. Critics argue that this could infringe on citizens' rights, bypassing their ability to contest fines.

Hyderabad: Imagine getting a traffic challan — and before you even open the message, the fine amount is already auto-debited from your bank account. That is exactly the scenario Hyderabad citizens are now debating after Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy recently suggested that traffic challan amounts could be automatically deducted from vehicle owners’ bank accounts.
While the proposal appears to be aimed at tightening enforcement and boosting compliance, it has triggered sharp criticism from citizens, entrepreneurs and social media commentators, who are raising serious legal, constitutional and ethical concerns, and accusing the Congress government of double standards.

What Did CM Revanth Reddy Propose?

A day after the Chief Minister floated the suggestion of auto-debiting traffic challan amounts directly from motorists’ bank accounts, the idea sparked a backlash across Hyderabad, with many asking a basic question: Can the government deduct money without consent or due process?
The criticism gained momentum on Tuesday, as voices from different sections of society questioned how such a system would work and whether it would violate citizens’ rights.

Citizens Flag ‘Double Standards’, Cite Congress Manifesto Promise

Entrepreneur Nayini Anurag Reddy said the proposal was deeply concerning and highlighted that it contradicted the Congress party’s own election promises.
He pointed out that Revanth Reddy, as PCC president, had earlier promised a 50% waiver on pending traffic challans, but after coming to power, the promise was not acted upon. Instead, citizens are now hearing talk of stricter recovery mechanisms.

Calling it a complete reversal, he said this exposes the government’s hypocrisy and questions its commitment to the manifesto.

“Where is the Due Process?” Legal and Constitutional Worry

A key objection raised by critics is due process.
They argue that every citizen has the right to:
  • understand the penalty,
  • contest it if needed,
  • appeal,
  • seek redress.
Automatic deduction, they say, could bypass these protections and become a system of punishment first, explanation later.

Social media reactions: Sarcasm, Old Videos and Sharp Questions

On X (formerly Twitter), an account named BharathMBNR shared an old video of Revanth Reddy and claimed that while in opposition he criticised drunk-driving drives and alleged harassment of motorists — but now as CM, he is suggesting auto-debit challan recovery.
Many others responded with sarcasm and counter-questions. X user @kkkmohan73, while “welcoming” the plan, asked a pointed question, ‘If roads are not good, whose account should be debited?’
He also questioned accountability for:
  • non-working traffic signals,
  • long U-turns (from 200 metres to 1 km),
  • extra fuel burned by motorists due to poor traffic planning.
In short, the message online was loud: If citizens face auto-debit, should officials too?

Pros vs Cons: What Auto-debit

Let’s break it down in a way commuters can easily understand — and what the government might be thinking too.
Possible Pros (Government’s POV)
1) Higher compliance, fewer unpaid challans

Many fines remain pending for years. Auto-debit could ensure fines are collected on time.
2) Faster enforcement
No chasing offenders, no repeated notices — a streamlined system means quicker recovery.
3) Better deterrence
If people know fines are unavoidable, it may reduce:
  • signal jumping
  • speeding
  • illegal parking
  • wrong-side driving
4) Less paperwork, less manpower
Traffic departments spend huge resources on notices and follow-ups. Auto-debit might reduce that burden.
5) Potentially improved revenue for road safety
The government could argue that more collection allows:

Related News

  • better surveillance systems
  • traffic management
  • road safety upgrades

Possible Cons (Citizens’ POV)

1) No fair chance to dispute
This is the biggest fear: What if the challan is wrong?
  • wrong number plate
  • camera error
  • duplicated challan
  • unclear evidence
Auto-debit could mean money goes first and complaint comes later.
2) Due process concerns
Critics insist fines must include:
  • notice,
  • hearing/appeal option,
  • proper adjudication.
Without these, it could be seen as unconstitutional or legally questionable.
3) Risk of harassment through system errors
Even a small technical glitch could lead to:
  • money being deducted wrongly
  • repeated deductions
  • confusion for families who share vehicles
4) Direct hit to household finances
Auto-debit may sound small for some, but for others it could mean:
  • EMI bounce
  • rent/payment issues
  • low account balance penalties
5) Lack of accountability in the system
Citizens are also asking:
If motorists are punished instantly, will anyone be punished instantly for:
  • broken roads?
  • failed infrastructure?
  • faulty signals?
Without fairness, auto-debit may look like one-sided power.

What Could Be the ‘Middle Path’ if Government Wants This?

If the government insists on bringing such a system, citizens say it should at least include safeguards like:
  • Auto-debit only after confirmed notice + time window
  • Mandatory appeal period before deduction
  • Auto-debit only for challans marked “finalised”
  • Instant refund mechanism for wrong deductions
  • SMS/app alerts before and after deduction
  • Special exemption for emergency/medical cases
On paper, auto-debit could help discipline traffic and reduce pending challans. But on the ground, Hyderabad commuters fear it could become unfair and stressful, especially if it is introduced without a strong legal framework, appeal mechanism and accountability.

Meet India’s Richest Beggar: The Man with Rs 1.4 Crore Mumbai Flats and a Rs 7.5 Crore Fortune

Bharat Jain, often called India’s richest beggar, has astonished the country with his unusual financial journey. Despite spending decades begging near CST and Azad Maidan, he has built an estimated Rs 7.5-crore fortune, including Rs 1.4-crore Mumbai flats and rental income from shops in Thane. His story challenges assumptions about poverty, opportunity and the unpredictable economics of urban survival.

On any ordinary day in Mumbai, the city's rhythm does not stop for much. Trains thunder into platforms, the office crowd weaves past crowds, and the air is thick with the familiar hum of movement. Somewhere within that restless energy, near Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus or at the wide stretch around Azad Maidan, a man sits quietly at his usual spot. Passersby glance at him the way millions have glanced at beggars for generations—briefly, unconsciously, almost automatically. But behind the ordinary figure lies a life that has startled even those used to Mumbai's endless contradictions.
His name is Bharat Jain, and he is popularly known as India's richest beggar—a man whose estimated net worth is approximately Rs 7.5 crore, according to various media archives. It is not a tale of overnight miracles or an instant stroke of luck but a true life story of a man who turned even the act of begging into a long-term financial strategy that eventually helped him buy property, earn passive income, and secure his family's future.

A Childhood Marked by Hardship

Magazine features often celebrate grand reinventions, but the beginnings of Jain were starkly simple. He was born to a family that had no financial cushion; even basic needs—food, shelter, and clothing—were often uncertain. Education was a luxury that never quite fit into the reality of the family. Without schooling or vocational training, and with responsibilities mounting early, he stepped into begging—not as a choice, but as a means of survival.

What started as a necessity, over the years, took the shape of a routine. Jain went on to fashion a niche for himself among the busiest pockets in Mumbai—choosing sites where footfall promised earnings that were nothing if not regular. The 10- to 12-hour daily grind fetched him Rs 2,000 to Rs 2,500 a day—a figure that might even startle those who view begging as a hand-to-mouth affair.

The Economics of a Beggar Who Earned More Than Salaried Workers

In the layered economy of India’s largest metropolis, Jain’s daily income quietly climbed beyond what many white-collar professionals earn. His monthly earnings averaged Rs 60,000 to Rs 75,000, a figure that reshapes how we think of urban survival and informal labour.
What sets Jain apart, however, isn't the money he made—it's the money he kept. Rather than buying everything in sight or living hand-to-mouth, he saved, he planned, and he watched his earnings add up. That discipline would go on to shape the second and most astonishing chapter of his life.

From Pavement to Property: The Investments That Changed Everything

One of the most extraordinary, almost counterintuitive facets of Jain’s story is his instinct for real estate. He used years of savings to eventually purchase:
Two residential flats in Mumbai, collectively valued at around Rs 1.4 crore, where his family lives comfortably today. Two commercial shops in Thane that yield him a regular rental income of around Rs 30,000 a month.
These modest spaces that he had chosen so strategically have earned him the kind of financial security that average middle-class households take decades to build. His investments did not come through inheritance or windfalls; the credit goes to years of sitting in sun and rain, collecting small notes and coins that grew into a property portfolio.

A Father Who Ensured His Children Never Returned to His Path

Behind the headlines and curiosity, he is a man committed first and foremost to his family: Jain is married, with two sons who have already completed their studies—something he fought to ensure, precisely because that opportunity had been denied to him.
The stability and hope his sons now have are things he never had in his youth. In many ways, it is this part of his journey—this break in generational hardship—that magazine features often overlook in favor of the shock value of his wealth.

Why a Crorepati Still Sits on a Pavement

It remains the question that confounds most readers: with a man owning property, rental income, and long-term financial stability, what need is there to continue begging?
Jain's family has time and again asked him to stop, yet he keeps coming back to CST or Azad Maidan. There are a few possibilities that those who have watched him for years seem to suggest:
Habit built over forty years
A sense of belonging among fellow beggars
An emotional attachment to the public spaces he has called his workplace.
A safety in routine, where each day promises a predictable outcome.
The comfort of familiarity, even when he no longer needs the income.
His presence in such places reminds us that work, identity, and dignity are concepts shaped not only by money but by feeling, habit, and environment.

A Story That Reveals an India We Rarely Discuss

To treat Jain's life as an odd trivia fact is to miss what it really represents: his journey makes us confront some rather uncomfortable truths about India's informal economy, the lack of social safety nets, and the unpredictable ways in which people adapt to limited choices.
His success does not romanticise begging; instead, it highlights how resourcefulness can emerge even in the harshest circumstances. It also underlines how desperately India needs pathways for skill development, education, and dignified employment—so that survival never has to depend on a pavement.
More Than a Curiosity—A Mirror to the City Ultimately, the story of India's richest beggar is the story of Mumbai itself: layered, surprising, contradictory, and astonishingly resilient. A man who once struggled for basic meals owns crores' worth of property now.
A father who never attended school ensured his sons did. A beggar who could retire quite comfortably still chooses to sit among strangers, collecting his income one coin, one note at a time. His life is not a lesson in morals or criticism; it is just a reflection of what happens when the margins of a city are made up of grit, unpredictability, and the will to survive.

Rs 1 Crore Theft at Punjabi Bagh House While Family Attends Wedding; Jewellery, Cash Stolen

In Punjabi Bagh, Delhi, a family experienced a significant theft valued at around Rs 1 crore while they were away at a wedding. Upon their return, they discovered their home ransacked, with broken locks and scattered belongings.

Delhi: A late-night burglary at a Punjabi Bagh residence has left a family shaken after thieves allegedly broke into the house while the occupants were attending a wedding and fled with valuables worth approximately Rs 1 crore.
Valuables worth around Rs 1 crore were stolen from a house in west Delhi’s Punjabi Bagh after burglars broke in while the family was away attending a wedding, police said on Saturday.

The theft came to light late Friday night when the family returned home and found the house ransacked. Jewellery, cash and silver items were missing, police told PTI.

The theft, which took place late Friday night, has left the family shaken and demanding justice.

Family returns to ransacked home after wedding
Speaking to ANI on Sunday, Kiran said the family had gone out to attend a wedding and had no idea anything was wrong until they were alerted. “We were at a wedding. On Saturday, my husband called me and told me to come home quickly. They did not leave anything. There was more than 1 kg of gold. Only this almirah was targeted. I want justice,” she said.

Shailendra, who returned home first, described the moment he realised the house had been burgled. “We went to a wedding. I stayed at the wedding the entire night. When I came back, I found a few things scattered outside, but the lock was intact. I then noticed that the kitchen window was open,” he told ANI.

As he entered the house, the scale of the theft became clear. “Everything inside was scattered. There was more than 1 kg of jewellery. Only this almirah was targeted. There was around Rs 5–6 lakh in cash. The silver was at least 10 kg,” he said.

According to Shailendra, police later informed the family that CCTV footage showed two men entering the house. “They cut our grill at around 3:16 am, according to the footage,” he added.
Police said the family had locked the house before leaving for the wedding. On returning late Friday night, they found the home ransacked and valuables missing. Jewellery and other items together are estimated to be worth about Rs 1 crore, officials said.
“The family had gone out to attend a wedding. On returning, they noticed the main door lock was broken, and household articles were scattered across the rooms. Valuables were missing,” a police officer said.
A case of theft has been registered, and multiple police teams have been formed to trace the burglars. Police are scanning CCTV footage from cameras installed in and around the locality to identify the suspects and track their movements before and after the crime.
Investigators are also questioning neighbours and security guards in the area to find out if any suspicious activity was noticed during the night.

Police said further investigation is underway, and efforts are being made to recover the stolen valuables and arrest those involved in the crime.

Actor confronts delivery boy who hit his BMW, what happens next stuns Internet

A delivery agent accidentally scratched Mumbai actor Sidharth Bhardwaj's luxury car while rushing to work. What he did next left social media users stunned.

A Mumbai-based actor shared a video of his encounter with a delivery agent after the rider accidentally crashed into his parked luxury car, and what happened next left social media users emotional.

Shared on Instagram by Sidharth Bhardwaj, who is an actor and also won the reality show Splitsvilla 2, he described the incident in detail. In the caption, Bhardwaj explained how the delivery agent had slammed into his parked BMW and scratched its white exterior.

According to Bhardwaj, the delivery agent broke down in tears and showed him hospital bills, explaining that his mother was battling last-stage cancer and that he was working tirelessly to cover her medical expenses. Moved by the man’s situation, Bhardwaj decided not to take a single rupee from him.

“I didn’t have the heart to even ask him for a penny,” Bhardwaj wrote, adding that he would get his car repaired himself and consider it his small contribution toward the delivery agent’s struggle.

He also clarified that the phone number shared at the end of the video was mentioned by the delivery agent himself, for anyone who wished to offer help, and that it had nothing to do with him personally.

In the clip, Bhardwaj can be seen turning the camera toward both of them and asking the delivery agent to explain what had happened. The agent mentions how he was trying to overtake Bhardwaj’s car when he accidentally hit it, leaving visible scratches.

He also acknowledges that compensating for the damage would be extremely expensive and beyond his means, given his mother’s ongoing treatment.

Bhardwaj responds by reassuring him, saying the car can be fixed anytime, but saving a life and supporting a parent matters far more. The video ends with the delivery agent sharing his contact details, hoping for any possible support.

Watch the video here:

In another video, which was a continuation of the first, Bhardwaj mentioned that within an hour of posting his last video, the delivery boy received Rs 25,000- Rs 30,000, which he had initially offered to use for compensation. But Bhardwaj told him that all the money belonged to him, and fixing his BMW was strictly his problem.

Watch the second video here:

The video received emotional responses from social media users, who said the moment stayed with them long after watching it. Several commenters admitted the clip brought them to tears, not just because of the delivery agent’s situation, but because of how calmly and compassionately Bhardwaj handled the moment.

“Got me crying, this is how we can make a difference to any life we touch,” one user wrote, adding that kindness shown at the right moment could change someone’s entire outlook.

Another user added, “Brother, there are very few kind-hearted people left in this world. I must say it was one heck of a heart-warming gesture,” praising Bhardwaj for choosing empathy over anger despite the damage to an expensive car.

Boy, 13, Murdered, Body Hidden In Bed Box, Grandmother Made To Sleep Above

According to investigators, the crime was committed after the accused allegedly attempted to sexually assault the minor.

Indore:
In Madhya Pradesh's Indore, the chilling murder of a 13-year-old boy has stunned everyone. The suspect strangled the child eight times with a nylon rope, smashed his face with a brick, and then hid the body inside a bed box. The accused made his ailing grandmother sleep on top of it to avoid suspicion.

According to investigators, the crime was committed after the accused allegedly attempted to sexually assault the minor. When the boy resisted and raised an alarm, he was brutally killed. The murder took place on Saturday on the roof of a six-storey building, barely 30 metres from the boy's house. To conceal the crime, the body was later shifted and hidden in a fourth-floor flat.

Police said the boy, a Class 8 student, went missing from outside his home around 7:30 pm on Friday. When he failed to return late at night, family members launched a frantic search and eventually lodged a missing person complaint with the police.

DCP Prateek Kumar said that "information about the child's disappearance was received by the police late at night, following which a crime was registered and an investigation was immediately initiated. Early the next morning, police received fresh inputs during the search, which led them to the rooftop of a nearby building where the child's jacket was found. Bloodstains were also noticed at the spot. During the investigation, police detained two key accused, one an adult and the other a minor. Both are currently being questioned in detail. Preliminary findings indicate that the child was playing in the same building when the crime took place. After killing the boy, the accused hid the body inside a bed in the same premises in an attempt to avoid detection."

CCTV footage provided the first crucial breakthrough, showing the boy entering a nearby building. During a joint search by police and family members, officers found a blood-stained jacket on the rooftop. Blood was also discovered at three to four locations, indicating efforts to wipe away evidence.

In a chilling twist, police said the prime accused, Rehan (21), was moving around with the police team during the search. His behaviour appeared evasive, and officers noticed scratch marks on his hands and neck. Rehan claimed the injuries were from machinery at work, but verification revealed he had not been to the workshop for four months.

Under sustained interrogation, Rehan broke down and confessed. He told police that the boy's body had been hidden inside a bed box. When officers removed his grandmother from the bed and opened it, they found the boy's body wrapped in a blanket. A murder case was immediately registered, and Rehan was arrested.

Bhopal Horror: Woman’s Corpse Found in Water Tank Days After Live-In Partner Killed Her

Bhopal police have identified a woman whose decomposed body was discovered in a trunk in a water tank in Kamal Nagar. Her live-in partner and three family members have been arrested for allegedly assisting in disposing of the body after the murder occurred last weekend.

Bhopal: Bhopal police have identified the woman whose decomposed body was found stuffed inside a trunk and dumped in a water tank on a vacant plot in the Six Ghara area of Kamal Nagar. Her live-in partner has been arrested along with his mother, brother and sister for allegedly helping him dispose of the body. According to MP police, the woman was murdered on the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday last week. After the killing, the accused allegedly kept the body inside his house for nearly a day. The next day, he packed the body into a trunk and tried to dump it in a water tank located around 200 metres from his residence.

Family Helped Dump the Body

Bhopal police said that while attempting to throw the trunk into the tank, the accused slipped and then called his family members for help. His mother, brother and sister allegedly assisted him in carrying the trunk and dumping it into the tank, according to a report by Times of India.

The case first came to light on Thursday evening when a local resident noticed a strong foul smell coming from the water tank on the empty plot and informed the police. A team from Nishatpura police station rushed to the spot and began a search operation.

Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 4) Malkeet Singh told ANI, “Yesterday, the police received information that a dead body was seen lying in a tank on an empty constructed plot in a Basti under Nishatpura police station. The police arrived at the scene, and an investigation was conducted. During the investigation, we removed a tin box from the water, from which the body of a woman was recovered. Following which, a case was registered, and the matter was taken into investigation.”

The water tank, around 10 feet deep and partially filled with water, had to be emptied with the help of local residents to retrieve the trunk. During the operation, police also found the carcass of a dead animal inside the tank, officials said.
Preliminary examination showed that the body was three to four days old and in an advanced stage of decomposition at the time of recovery. Bhopal police suspect stones were placed inside the trunk to ensure it sank in the water.
Earlier, the officer further said, “We have sent the body for a post-mortem. As soon as the PM report is received, legal action will be taken in accordance with it. No arrests have been made yet; only the deceased's identity is being ascertained. The suspects whose identities we are receiving are being searched.”

Accused Arrested, Probe Continues

Following identification of the woman, MP police registered a murder case and arrested the live-in partner and his family members. Further investigation is underway.

'Madhya Pradesh Officer Suspended Over Rs 2.7 Crore 'Stamp Scam'

A FIR was registered against a cashier in the case earlier this week for allegedly issuing adhesivestamps but not recording the transactions.

Guna:
The Madhya Pradesh government on Saturday suspended the district treasury officer of Guna in connection with alleged irregularities in the sale of stamps causing a loss of Rs 2.70 crore to the exchequer, officials said.

A First Information Report was registered against a cashier in the case earlier this week for allegedly issuing revenue, judicial, notarial and special adhesive stamps but not recording the transactions.

An inspection of the Guna treasury conducted on December 17 and 18 by the joint director, treasury and accounts, Gwalior, showed a mismatch between the stock recorded on Integrated Financial Management Information System (IFMIS) portal and the actual stock, officials said.

District treasury officer Rakesh Kumar then wrote to the Cantonment police station on January 21, seeking registration of an FIR. Accordingly, a First Information Report was registered against Keshav Verma, assistant grade-III cashier, on Wednesday under the Prevention of Corruption Act and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

Verma allegedly removed stamps worth Rs 3.74 crore but made entries for only Rs 1.04 crore. But the finance department also held treasury officer Kumar responsible for negligence and suspended him.

The IFMIS system mandates online approval with the treasury officer's login for transfer of stamps, but Kumar allegedly ignored the procedure and permitted removal of stamps without system entries, the department said in a statement.

Mandatory registers and acknowledgements were not maintained as required under the Madhya Pradesh Treasury Code, 2020, and stamps were issued to vendors without written applications or receipts, it added.

Collector Kishore Kumar Kanyal said records related to stamps had not been maintained in the treasury since 2017-18.

A 50 Lakh FD, Alcoholism and Uncle's 'Instigation': Inside Karnataka Triple Murder Horror

Karnataka triple murder probe reveals 27-year-old man killed parents and sister in Kottur to access father’s fixed deposit money, police say.

Days after police uncovered the bodies of a family buried inside a rented house in Karnataka’s Vijayanagara district, investigators say the motive behind the chilling triple murder was money.
The Kottur police on Monday (February 2) said their investigation has revealed that Akshay B J, 27, killed his parents and younger sister to gain access to his father’s fixed deposit funds. The murders took place on January 27 at the family’s rented house in Kottur town.

Murder for money, police say

According to police, Akshay killed his father Bhimaraj H, 52, his mother Jayalakshmi J, alias Jayamma, 50, and his sister Amrutha, 18, before burying their bodies inside the house. He then travelled nearly 300 km to Bengaluru and filed a missing persons complaint, claiming the family had disappeared after coming to the city for medical treatment.

“Initially, he fabricated a story that his sister was pregnant, and that is why he killed his sister for honour, but as investigations continued, it became clear that he did it for the money,” a police officer said as quoted by Indian Express.

Investigators found that Akshay’s father had recently sold a duplex house in Harapanahalli for about Rs 1.2 crore. “Akshay’s father owned a duplex house in Harapanahalli, and he sold it recently. He got about Rs 1.2 crore. Akshay started demanding money for his business, but as he was careless and addicted to alcohol, his parents did not give it to him,” the officer said.
Police said around Rs 50 lakh was kept in a fixed deposit in Amrutha’s name for her education, while the remaining amount was with Bhimaraj.

The investigation has also led to the arrest of Akshay’s uncle, Vasanth Kumar, 53, who allegedly instigated him to commit the murders.
Police said Akshay continued to mislead investigators even after his arrest, claiming his sister was pregnant and that his parents opposed aborting the child. Medical reports, however, confirmed that Amrutha was not pregnant.
The Kottur police have filed a case and taken both Akshay and Vasanth into custody as further investigation continues.

Meerut Drum Murder Case: Accused's Family To Leave City, Wants Fresh Start

On Wednesday, a 'House for sale' sign was seen outside their residence.

Meerut (UP):
Eight months after the killing of Saurabh Rajput, a shadow of the incident still looms large over Meerut's Indiranagar, where the family of the accused, Muskan Rastogi, resides and now prepares to leave the city.

On Wednesday, a 'House for sale' sign was seen outside their residence.

Muskan's father, Pramod Rastogi, on Thursday told PTI that the family no longer wishes to live in Meerut.

"There are only painful memories left here. We want to move out and start afresh," he said.

Pramod's wife Kavita and son Rahul, also supported the decision.

The family said their social and financial situation had deteriorated since the incident on March 3. Pramod's jewellery business is on the verge of shutting down, with customers staying away and creditors halting transactions, he said.

Muskan's younger sister, who used to offer tuition at home, also lost her income after people stopped sending their children.

According to police records, Muskan, and her lover, Sahil Shukla, allegedly murdered her husband, Saurabh Rajput, on March 3. The duo allegedly chopped the body into four pieces, stuffed them in a drum, and filled it with cement before fleeing to Himachal Pradesh.

Muskan later confessed to the crime to her family, who informed the police.

Rahul alias Bablu told local media that the house, which is now up for sale, was allegedly built using money sent by Saurabh from London.

"They hid the truth and built this house with Saurabh's money. Now they are selling it," he claimed.

Muskan and Sahil were arrested and produced in court on March 19, following which they were sent to judicial custody. They are currently lodged in the Meerut district jail, where Muskan is pregnant.

Saurabh's family has demanded a DNA test of the child, stating they would accept the baby only if it is proven to be Saurabh's.

Sahil is presently engaged in agricultural work inside the jail, a local police official said.

Only his brother and grandmother visit him, while Muskan's family has severed all ties with her, the official added.

A Murder To Avenge Mother's Insult After 10 Years. Not A Bollywood Script

Sonu Kashyap roamed the streets of Lucknow for the next 10 years in search of the man who had insulted his mother.

Lucknow:
Their mother was insulted and thrashed by a man a decade ago. What followed was a frantic hunt that carried the essence of a classic Bollywood script and the brutality of an unforgiving son. Such is the story of Sonu Kashyap, who, driven by his thirst for revenge, roamed the streets of Lucknow for the next 10 years in search of Manoj.

Sonu's friends joined him in the murder plot, purely on the promise that they would be thrown a party after the killing. They executed a well-crafted plan and eliminated Manoj, a coconut water seller, but a social media post gave away their identities to the police and landed them all behind bars.

The accused were identified as Sonu, Ranjeet, Adil, Salamu, and Rehmat Ali.

The Murder

Manoj had thrashed Sonu's mother over a dispute about 10 years ago and fled the area. Upset and enraged over the insult meted out to his mother, Sonu began a quest to find him. Time passed, but he didn't give up. About three months ago, he finally spotted him in the city's Munshi Pulia area. There began his planning for revenge.

From conducting a recce to noting down Manoj's daily schedule, Sonu prepared a meticulous plan to eliminate him. But he needed resources. He involved four of his friends in the murder plot, promising to throw them a party after the murder. On May 22, after Manoj had just closed his shop and was alone, they attacked him with iron rods and left him half-dead.

Manoj died during the treatment.

The Party

It was a blind probe for the police. While the accused were captured on CCTV, the cops could not find them anywhere.

Meanwhile, with the murder executed, it was party time for Sonu and company. He threw a lavish liquor party for his friends. Booze flowed, and some photos even made it to social media. And that helped the police zero in on the suspects.

One of the five suspects seen in the CCTV footage was identified in the social media photos. Further search gave away his social media profiles. He was seen wearing the same orange t-shirt on social media that he wore during the murder.

The police then tracked and arrested all five suspects.

Rajasthan Photographer Throws Acid At 14-Year-Old Girl For Refusing To Talk

While the girl's clothes and a finger suffered burn injuries, a major tragedy was averted.

A 14-year-old girl from Rajasthan has been a victim of an acid attack for refusing to talk to a stranger, an older man, and for scolding him. The girl, a class 9 student, was reportedly on her way to school when the incident occurred. The man was arrested after a three-day search.

A Chanced Meeting

During the police investigation, the accused, 19-year-old Omprakash, alias Jani, son of Chandraram Meghwal, revealed that he spotted the girl at a wedding he was covering as a photographer. Later, when Omprakash tried to contact the girl, he was rebuked, which allegedly hurt him. He then decided to take revenge.

Revenge Acid Attack

Omprakash drove past the girl walking towards her school in the Subhash Park area in Sri Ganganagar district and threw a bottle of acid at her. While the girl's clothes and a finger suffered burn injuries, a major tragedy was averted.

The accused not just planned an acid attack but also prepared an escape from the police. He covered his face with a cloth and a helmet and wrapped the bike's number plate with another cloth.

According to the police, Omprakash was frustrated over unrequited love.

Rs 25,000 Reward

The incident was captured on camera, but since the accused had covered his face and vehicle number plate, the police had a difficult time identifying the man. The police scanned CCTV footage from the area and arrested the accused based on technical and local clues.

Superintendent of Police Dr Amrita Duhan had announced a reward of Rs 25,000 for anyone providing information on the accused.

After the arrest on Monday, the police paraded the accused through the market to instil fear of the law among the public and to deter similar incidents.

Further investigation into the matter is underway.

UP Man, 100, Gets Acquitted In Four Decades Old Murder Case

The murder happened in 1982 over a land dispute, and three persons -- Maiku, Satti Din, and Dhani Ram were the accused in the case.

Prayagraj (UP):
The Allahabad High Court has acquitted a nearly 100-year-old murder accused, noting more than four decades have passed since he challenged his life term sentence and observing that social consequences suffered by him cannot be ignored for granting the relief.

A division bench of Justices Chandra Dhari Singh and Justice Sanjiv Kumar also said that the prolonged pendency of the appeal and the age of the accused, Dhami Ram, were relevant while moulding relief.

The murder happened in 1982 over a land dispute, and three persons -- Maiku, Satti Din, and Dhani Ram were the accused in the case. While Maiku had absconded, the Hamirpur sessions court sentenced Satti Din and Ram to life imprisonment in 1984.

Ram was released on bail the same year. Satti Din passed away during the pendency of his appeal, leaving Ram as the sole surviving appellant in the case.

Noting that Ram has been on bail since then, the high court directed that his bail bond shall stand discharged and said the acquittal was based on the merits of the case, specifically the prosecution's failure to prove the charges beyond a reasonable doubt.

The division bench further pointed out that the anxiety, uncertainty and social consequences suffered by the accused over decades cannot be ignored while assessing what justice now demands.

Ram's counsel submitted that the appellant is about 100 years of age and that he had only exhorted Maiku to fire at the victim.

He Saw Her Secret: Gwalior Mother Gets Life Term for Killing 5-Year-Old Son

Jyoti (right) threw her son Jatin (left) from the two-storey roof of a building.
Bhopal:
A disturbing case has emerged from Madhya Pradesh's Gwalior, where a woman has been sentenced to life imprisonment for killing her own five-year-old son. According to the prosecution, the incident dates back to April 28, 2023. Jyoti Rathore, wife of police constable Dhyan Singh Rathore, was allegedly involved in an affair with her neighbour Uday Indolia. Investigators said that Jyoti's son, Jatin, saw his mother in a compromising position with Uday.

Fearing Jatin could reveal (to his father Dhyan) what he witnessed, Jyoti took a horrifying step. She threw her five-year-old son from the two-storey roof of a building. Jatin battled for life but died within 24 hours.

Case Initially Treated As Accident

Initially, Jatin's death was treated as an accident due to a fall from a rooftop. But the truth, police said, could not stay buried. Fifteen days after the crime was committed, Jyoti broke down and confessed to Dhyan.

Dhyan had already begun suspecting that something was terribly wrong after his son's death. He allegedly recorded multiple audio and video conversations in which Jyoti admitted what happened, and he also collected CCTV footage from cameras installed at their home.

Armed with these incriminating materials, Dhyan approached the police and filed a complaint.

Jyoti's Lover Named Accused But Later Acquitted

The police registered a case and named Jyoti and her lover Uday as accused. After investigation, a charge sheet was filed in court. During the trial, the court held Jyoti guilty based on the evidence presented and sentenced her to life imprisonment.

However, Uday was acquitted, with the court citing a lack of evidence against him.

Thatipur Police Station in charge Kamal Kishore said the case was registered after the husband's complaint, and the investigation pointed towards the wife's role, including CCTV review.
