Cristiano Ronaldo’s return to Manchester United

How will Cristiano Ronaldo do on his return to Manchester United?

Even if you’re not a Manchester United fan, there’s a chance you might want to get hold of a ‘Ronaldo 7’ shirt this season.

Cristiano, the Portuguese forward, re-signed for the Red Devils last week and the club has confirmed that he will wear his iconic No.7 shirt for the upcoming campaign.

The shortage of shirts coincided with Cristiano Ronaldo’s return

Many will be keen to get their hands on a shirt with his name on the back, after he returned to the club he left in 2009.

Ronaldo departed Old Trafford for Real Madrid 12 years ago, having picked up three Premier League titles and a Champions League before he left, as well as receiving the first of his five Ballons d’Or.

He signed for the Red Devils this summer for an initial fee of £12.86million, plus £6.86m in potential add-ons across five years.

However, United are facing a shortage of replica jerseys to sell, according to the Independent, due to “Covid-influenced delays” that are affecting kit supplier, adidas.

The sportswear giant is experiencing a slowdown in production due to the closure of factories in Vietnam, which hasn’t been helped by Ronaldo’s signature, leading to through-the-roof sales of United kits.

“We are working in collaboration with Manchester United to try and meet exceptionally high fan demand for our new designs but expect low availability of certain products,” an adidas spokesperson told the Independent.

Many questioned whether Ronaldo would be able to wear the No.7, with Edinson Cavani given it at the start of the season.

Premier League rules stated that a player must wear the same shirt number for the whole season, which led to many questioning what Ronaldo would do.

However, after asking for special dispensation for the superstar to take the number that he wore during his first spell at the club, United officially revealed on Thursday that the Portuguese forward would be able to take it off Cavani.

The Uruguayan will now wear the No.21 shirt that Daniel James had before his move to Leeds United, on Deadline Day.

Cristiano Ronaldo broke Manchester United's daily shirt sale record in less than four hours after it was confirmed he would retain his iconic No 7 jersey.

The Portugal forward secured a long-awaited return to Old Trafford in August and is currently isolating ahead of his first visit to Carrington, expected to be on Thursday.

As United confirmed Ronaldo will wear No 7 on Thursday, fans dashed online to secure a replica and it only took four hours to smash the record as the highest daily sale on a single sports merchandise site outside North America.

Fanatics, United's official retail partner, confirmed the shirt sales hit record figures and the first hour alone bettered the best full day of global sales for the club's online store.

Manchester United fans have been queueing in their numbers at Old Trafford to get hold of a newly printed Ronaldo number 7 shirt
Across the Fanatics network, Ronaldo became the biggest-selling player in the 24 hours following a transfer to a new club - leading Lionel Messi (to PSG), Tom Brady (to Tampa Bay Buccaneers) and LeBron James (to LA Lakers).

It was not only on the internet that Ronaldo's newly-printed shirt was in demand - United's club store at Old Trafford was also a popular destination on Friday morning as fans queued to get their hands on the number.

On the Sky Sports website and apps, the three most-read articles in the month of August were about Ronaldo while on the Sky Sports Twitter feed, posts involving the Portuguese had a global reach of 1billion users.

On August 27, United went public with their agreement to sign Ronaldo on a deal with Juventus.

Since then, there have been 9,986 online articles published online in wake of the news, with 499.3 published words per minute and 37.25 Tweets per minute.

There were 1,269 tweets in the first 60 seconds (21 tweets per second) after the announcement, and 64,321 in the first hour alone. In all, there have been in excess of 360,574 posts to date, equivalent to 37.25 per minute.

A formal announcement came on at 10:15am on deadline day, with fans taking to social media to express their delight. That simple 'He's Back!' post clocked over 30,900 retweets and over 250,000 likes.

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says there is "no place to hide" for his players following the return of Cristiano Ronaldo.

Ronaldo, 36, will make his second United debut in the Premier League game against Newcastle at Old Trafford.

His arrival, and that of France defender Raphael Varane, has raised expectation levels at a club which last won the league title in 2013.

Solskjaer said: "He will get on the pitch at some point, that's for sure."

The Norwegian added: "There is no place to hide with winners like that. You can't give 95% in training and not be focused. That is what he demands of himself and everyone else."

It is a measure of the standards Ronaldo has to live up to that in his last appearance against Newcastle at Old Trafford, in January 2008, the Portugal forward scored a second-half hat-trick in a 6-0 win.

At that time, Ronaldo's performances were characterised by decisive running with the ball at his feet and an ability to beat defenders on either side.

What kind of Ronaldo are Man Utd getting?
Now he is a more direct attacker. His two recent goals against the Republic of Ireland were straight out of the centre-forward's playbook, as he used his legendary leap to get above defenders before steering headers into the net.

"Everyone evolves and develops throughout their career," said Solskjaer.

"You won't see 18, 19, 20 stepovers before he goes past you. But what he has developed in his years at Real Madrid impressed us all.

"He is one of the best in the air and his timing and desire to get on the end of crosses is second to none. He still hits the target 99 times out of 100 when he shoots from outside the box. He knows the game more and which positions to run into and is still as quick from the statistics.

"Everyone is going to look up to him. He is going to be a leader in this dressing room."

In an interview with former team-mate Wes Brown on MUTV, Ronaldo said he had not returned to Manchester "for a vacation".

He has signed a two-year contract, with the option of an additional season. That would take Ronaldo to 39 and Solskjaer feels he may continue beyond that.

"Cristiano doesn't need me to tell him what to do," said the Norwegian.

"He has always had this desire and determination to be the best. He is the one I have seen in my career that prepared and took the steps they needed to.

"He is in such good nick still and will be looking at the next few years to play as much as he can and score as many goals as he can.

"Ryan Giggs played until he was 40. I wouldn't be surprised if Cristiano gets to the same age."

Great start for him.

A goal just before half-time against Newcastle.

2 goals upon his return so far.

Dream return for him.

The man is simply the Greatest, don’t support United but the amount of vitriol we’ve seen from the naysayers was unprecedented but has responded in style and there are so many more who have deep admiration for a footballing icon, we are so blessed to have him in the PL. A fitting reception for a King and a Dream return, you couldn’t script this lol

A banner supporting a woman who accused footballer Cristiano Ronaldo of a sex assault has been flown over Old Trafford during his return game for Manchester United.

The Level Up feminist group said they wanted to "remind crowds" of rape allegations against him.

Kathryn Mayorga said she was assaulted by him at a Las Vegas hotel in 2009.

In 2019, US prosecutors said Ronaldo, who denied the claims, would not face charges.

A plane with the banner "Believe Kathryn Mayorga" was flown after the start of the game against Newcastle United.

The Portuguese player has scored twice in his first Manchester United game in 12 years.

Just incredible. It is amazing how good he is. Still the best forward in the PL and he is well past his physical prime.

Among the top two greatest of all time for a reason.

Pretty incredible “second debut” for him, and frankly not a surprise at all. A breathtaking footballer.

He actually thought Ronaldo would do well to score 15 goals this season :)))

Well only 13 to go now….

I expected him to achieve that target in a difficult territory but at the end of the day, Ronaldo is a freak of nature to who defies logic. I hope I get the chance to watch him live, I believe it’s a multi year deal, absolute legend and icon, here in England folk should look to see if they can get to see a GOAT instead of falling into the trap of petty rivalries between clubs, some fans are a bit more low quality then others however

Crazy scenes, what an atmosphere and reception for him @ Old Trafford

Just 13 more goals required for him to have a good season in "the most competitive and physical league in the world." KingKhanWC

At 36 years of age, he still towers above any other player in the PL. We'll surely never see someone like him and Messi.

The overrating of Premier League is hilarious. Some of the defending is so naive and comical, any striker with decent pace will make merry

Its going to be Ronaldo vs Lukaku this season. Lukaku is in incredible form and plays for the better team but Ronaldo is Ronaldo.

Exactly.

It is going to be a Ronaldo vs Lukaku race for the PL Golden Boot.

Lukaku is probably at the peak of his powers at the moment, and perhaps the best pure striker in the world just behind Lewandowski.

But as you said, Ronaldo is Ronaldo.

Lukaku is terrific but in my opinion, Haaland is already better. He is a freakish talent. He could win 2-3 Ballon d’Ors.

Probably the most physically gifted ST you can imagine. I have never seen someone so quick and so agile at his size.

I will be surprised if he dosent score 30. Ronaldo in his peak with that peak Real Madrid would've won 7-8 out of 10 league titles if they played in EPL. People forget the fact that Ronaldo & his team had to compete week in week out against arguably the greatest footballer & club side of all time. I always believed Ronaldo was underrated because of Messi, because he was constantly compared with the most naturally gifted player of all time.

A slap on the face on those who doubted Ronaldo.

He's easily going to score 20 goals. I'm in disbelief to have read that he was going to struggle to score 15 goals.

The counter-argument has always been "unlike you I've played football" which has no relevance especially if your footballing IQ is below par.

I completely forgot Haaland. He is an absolute freak and the way he is consistently banging goals every week-end makes me realise that he is surely going to be the player of the decade alongside Mbappé.

However, he deserves to go a better team. Individuallly, he has been a beast, but he needs to go to a more dominant side, win more trophies and become a serious contender for the Ballon D'Or because Dortmund are never going to win him a Champions League.

I expect him to win atleast 2 and maybe even more, him and Mbappé are so far ahead of the next generation.

Amazing day I had at Old Trafford. Great experience and what an atmosphere. Epic! Ronaldo definitely the great ever.

I watched it on TV and I had goosebumps just seeing the fans welcome Ronaldo and chanting his name throughout the game.

It must have been a thrilling experience to watch it live.

Awesome! I’ll try put some photos up. Old Trafford is good anyway but today was a different level.

There was a season ticket holder next to me who said he usually gets in 5 minutes before but came well early. I think there was quite a few who came early to watch Ronaldo train first and then when the teams and his name was announced.

Btw nice little dance by Pogba and Lingard at FT towards where we were sitting at the Sir Alex Ferguson stand, and the appreciation by Ronaldo.

What a day!

They talk about football royalty, but this guy is royalty of football royalty.

Even at 36 Cristiano seems hungry for more goals and fit as a fiddle. He could very well end up as the top scorer come the end of the season.

Same guy told me last season he will never post again if MU finish above LP :)))

even 20 goals for Ronaldo standard should be considered poor, im sure he has the 34 target on his mind, he will never get another crack at it.

What about Zlatan? Certainly he comes close if not on the same line in terms of speed

What about Zlatan? Certainly he comes close if not on the same line in terms of speed

Not at all. Zlatan was quick for his height, but he was never among them fastest players in the world.

Haaland is not just fast for a 1.94m player, he is one of the fastest players in the world by any measure. This is what makes him so difficult to deal with.

Cristiano Ronaldo was "super nervous" before scoring twice on his much-hyped Manchester United return in their 4-1 win over Newcastle, after which boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said he has allowed fans to "dream" again.

The 36-year-old was making his first appearance for the club in 12 years as a party atmosphere hit Old Trafford.

"I didn't expect to score two goals," the Portugal legend said.

"I expected one but not two. It was an unbelievable moment."

Ronaldo scored 118 goals in 292 games goals for United between 2003, when he joined as a teenager, and 2009, when he went to Real Madrid for £80m.

In the next 12 years he scored 551 goals for Real and Juventus before a surprise £12.8m move back to United on deadline day.

One of his five Champions League wins and one of his five Ballons d'Or came during his time in England.

United fans have been ecstatic since - although they have had to wait a long time for his second debut because of the international break. There was a buzz around the ground hours before kick-off as they wore Ronaldo shirts and sang his name.

It sounds amazing and you could certainly feel the buzz online. I tried to get tickets with some mates but were seriously priced out. Usually you can buy off ST holders but I don't think anyone was in the mood to sell.

What a blunder by Florentino Perez to not take him back in April when he offered his services. Real Madrid put everything on Mbappe and got nothing in the end.

He may not have the speed he did all those years ago, but his awareness, anticipation and quickness of thought is a step above most footballers.

Fantastic footballer and one of the alltime greats.

When we signed Ibrahimovic in 2016, he was around the same age as Ronaldo, he went on to score 28 goals in all competition in his first season, including 17 in the league. Now I am a big Ibra fan and I think he is a top player even now at nearly 40, but Ronaldo is on another level. I find it baffling that so called football experts predict that Ronaldo will struggle to get 15 goals lol. If Ronaldo stays fit which he usually does, he is getting 20-25 league goals and 30-35 goals in all competition. 15 goals lol. What a joke of a prediction.

They'll get mbappe free next summer so with the funds they can take a punt on haaland too, R7 just wasnt interested in going back to RM, he always dreamt to end his career back at MU.

Ronaldo prolly will only play 27-30 league games even if he stays fit. We are already 4 games in and he won’t play every week

So hitting the 20 goal mark will be a HUGE achievement

On a side note, how many goals has Messi scored while playing for PSG this season? How many more to go till 25? (Prediction made by football aficionados, namely Mamoon ?)

He has only played like 30 minutes for PSG so far.

You make it sound like Messi has gone 5 games without scoring for PSG when he has not even played an entire half since his arrival.

Ligue 1 is by far the least competitive league in Europe, PSG don't need Messi to win it, and if he starts playing regularly from now, he will still end up with 20-25 goals, even after missing 5 games.

I wrote 15 is a good return but imo he will score 15-20 max.

Lets not carried away after Newcastle :))

Move on. You should be asking why the alleged ‘GOAT’ has been benched in the least competitive league in Europe - your words.

Let me know when Messi score 25 goals as predicted by your brethren in a minnow fest league before you flank with your high 5 crew.

L to the O to the L.

Best.

I honestly thought you had some respectable amount of knowledge about the game, but it looks like I was wrong.

Firstly, Messi is definitely not an "alleged" GOAT. He is universally known as one of the 2 best players to have ever stepped on a football pitch.

Secondly, he has not been benched and that just shows your limited understanding and following of the game. He missed out on the first few games because he had just finished his vacations after the Copa America and lacked match practice. Now, he just came back from WC qualifiers in Argentina.

He is by no means getting benched because the level of Ligue 1 is not at such a high level where a player like Messi has to be benched and the likes of Icardi play every week-end. Get your facts right.

Lastly, Ligue 1 is the least competitive league in Europe. These are not my words, it's UEFA's official ranking according to which, the French League is behind the rest of Europe in terms of competition and quality. Again, these are known facts, I should not be teaching you this.

Do Utd fans now believe they will win the Premier League with Ronaldo?

Goals per player isnt the goal. Winning the league or Champions League is the goal for big clubs.

If Utd fans still dont think they will win those trophies, what is the point of CR7 , one of the best of all time?

They certainly have more chances than the last few seasons.

They have not won the league since 2013, and this is arguably their best chance to get a real shot at it, especially when you take a look at their new signings.

Ronaldo will certainly bring more goals, a winning mentality and more home support, as we saw in the last game. However, one player doesn't mean everything, and it can't win a league or a UCL on completely on his own, even if we are talking about the greatest of all time.

United still have some issues, the DM one being the most important. Moreover, this season is probably going to be the most competitive one in quite some time. United have had the best transfer window, Chelsea have been on a dream run under Tuchel, City have been the most consistent since the last 3-4 years, and you can't write off the likes of Liverpool either.

So to answer your question, United have raised their chances for sure, they are serious contenders, it remains to be seen if they can live up to the expectations.

Im a big fan of CR7, not just as a player but as a human being, his work ethic is better than most. His humantrian side is rarely known but he does so much for people.

He will certainly bring the winning mentality, score goals but I agree with you , Utd will come up against other great teams which are looking in great form. I think Utd had a great chance to win it last season as City started slowly and LFC were struggling in mid season. Now you also have Chelsea, who are looking the complete team.

Ronaldo v City, LFC and Chelsea will show how much impact he really has and how likely Utd are to win the league.

Yawn.

I simply asked how many goals has Messi scored since joining PSG this season based on the predicitions made by so called self proclaimed aficionados of the game; given you lot are quick to bring up a CR7 predicition made by another poster.

You could've just said a big fat zero instead posting a hail mary routine.

Oh, given L1 is the least competitive league, I'd have thought Messi would score more than the 25 predicted, but hey, you claim to know more.

You keep repeating the same thing over and over again without using your brains, and that's the problem.

How do you expect Messi to score in Ligue 1 if he has not even been a starter till date ? Or do you actually believe that the man who pretty much owns almost every single record in La Liga would fail in the least competitive league in Europe ?

He missed out on the first few games because he came back from his holidays and had to get some practice to get match fit.

Recently, he has not been a starter because he was playing for Argentina in the WC qualifiers.

There you go again, putting words in people’s mouth, just to win an argument, this is the problem.

Good for you, I got better things to do then to stoop to your level.

Everyone saw who keeps changing the topic and then keeps running away after getting a reply.

Nobody was even talking about Messi or PSG before you came back.

The so called aficionados of PP made a prediction that Messi will score 25 goals this season playing for PSG - in a league known to be the least competitive in Europe - all we hear are excuses ranging from he’s on holiday to WC qualifiers - benched - but they are quick to pounce on KKWC who made a prediction on CR7 - only because of their hate for the PL.

Time will tell, thus far the Messi hype at PSG is exactly that, hype, coupled with hot air.

:)

What I find hilarious is that PL haters claim that the league is not competitive because CR7 scored 2 goals. Of course CR7 being a once in a generation player would score goals in any league, oh wait. . . . that’s precisely what he has done. :)

And Ronaldo's scored tonight in the Champions League too.

Goals mean nothing without trophies. If Utd cant win the league or CL, they might as well bought old chubby Ronaldo .

And Ronaldo's scored tonight in the Champions League too.

Imagine if we post every goal Salah scored. :)

His goal couldnt stop Utd losing to Young Boys who have a wage bill of one weeks Ronaldos wages. :))

A very poor result for United tonight, but my word this guy has a remarkable penchant for scoring goals. He just knows how to hit the back of the net, over and over again, in pretty much every game.

Did you watch it James?

At 53mins Ronaldo clear on goal, decides to take a dive instead. If he had stayed on his feet Utd would have won the match. But yes his first goal was a brillliant piece of judgement to stay on side.

Time will tell, thus far the Messi hype at PSG is exactly that, hype, coupled with hot air.

:)

Sir, are you aware that Ligue 1 is only 5 games in and Messi has played only one (and that too 30 mins) of those games? Why do you keep asking whether he has scored 25 goals five games into the season like a buffoon? If Messi goes on to stay fit from here on he will easily clear 25 league goals. Why don't you be a man and stick your neck out and say how many goals he will score instead of posting these utterly idiotic, nonsensical posts and then we will see what's what at the end of the season :)?

That is the problem. He doesn't understand that he is making himself look like a fool here whose limited understanding of the game is getting exposed everyday.

His desire to score goals is unbelievable. His whole mentality is actually unbelievable. A truly brilliant footballer who we are blessed to be watching.

Ronaldo will score goals but United still won’t win anything, because of the clueless manager. His biggest contribution to United won’t be the goals but that he will get Ole the sack.

They'll get mbappe free next summer so with the funds they can take a punt on haaland too, R7 just wasnt interested in going back to RM, he always dreamt to end his career back at MU.

According to some journalists Ronaldo was interested in a move back to Madrid after Juve got knocked out in the knock out stage of the Champions League. Florentino being Florentino told him that he loves him but that RM was looking forward to the future. CR's agent visited Madrid in April as well.

I don't remember any big player/legend returning to RM as an active football player. Should have made an exception for Ronaldo considering his greatness and how injury prone Hazard, Bale are.

Ronaldo is phenomenal but only when MU are attacking and in possession, his movements are magical but when out of possession and defending he can become a liability for the team, this is where cavani comes in handy with his relentless energy and pressing.

Against YB we were practically playing with 9 men in the second half, because ronaldo was taken out of the game. Going forward Ole will need to show the guts to drop him when hes not needed and probably play in cavani in some games where MU will need to sit back. YB was an early warning sign before real damage couldve been done.

Another game, another goal.

In fact with a bit of luck he could have had more.

Brilliant start to his return by the legend.

The fact that he already is the league's 2nd top scorer despite playing 3 games less than the rest is a testament of his everlasting greatness.

shameful refereeing otherwise he would have got a hatrick today but I expect he will score many more goals when Cavani comes back, he needs a ram like cavani to open up spaces inside the box. Right now he is operating all alone in the box, when he gets a partner he will be devastating.

Right now all attackers Ronaldo, Sancho, Pogba drop off into the same left half spaces, i will like to see Ronaldo on the left, sancho right and cavani center next week, When ronaldo moves into the box, shaw could provide the width.

Ole showed his brilliance today by bringing on matic and lingard who turned the game around and he is going to take ronaldo to a complete different level when he gets the balance right and cavani and rashford return.

Ole showed his brilliance. Too bad he is still obsessed with McTominay and Fred. And too bad his brilliance cost us against young boys.

Ole has been our manager for nearly three years. He is still yet to find the right balance and you think he will find the balance now lol.

He has no options other than Mctominay and Fred in CM other than an aged Matic and a no discipline Pogba, hes frustrated with them as much as you are.

Again, it was the CM that cost us against YB (VDB, Pogba, Bruno) who had no idea on how to hold the ball up and they pushed the whole team back in defence by giving the ball away everytime they had it.

The investment needed to plug the holes in the squad 3 years ago was not a one transfer window job, it takes years, when it comes to finding the right balance, ole had to do it with perera, lingard, old matic in midfield with unexperienced players around the, no manager could have done it with those players. i doubt you'll understand considering you think brendon williams is better than Luke Shaw.

This isn’t a game of FIFA where you can buy whatever players you want. This is real life football where managers have to make do with what they have got and get the best out of his players, something Ole is incapable of doing because he and his coaching staff are tactically inept.

Tuchel went to Chelsea and turned them into champions league winners without spending a single penny. Under Lampard, Jorginho was struggling and Chelsea fans wanted him out. TT turned him into the player of the season. TT turned Rudiger, Alonso into world beaters when under lampard, they were useless. Great mangers can mask the weaknesses of his players and enhance their strengths. I have seen Man United win games under Sir Alex with midfielders like Gibson, Cleverly, Fabio. But Ole cant beat Villarreal in a Europa League final with Pogba, Bruno, McTominay and Fred in his midfield.

And besides, Ole has spent 500 million as the manager. If LVG, Moyes and Jose were backed as much as he has been, they would have achieved more than him and probably wouldn’t have got the sack when they did. This is the best United team in a decade, yet we can’t win a trophy and yet we keep on struggling against teams that sit back.

If we had Conte as our manager, I would be saying with my chest that we will win something this season, but under your hero Ole, I can only hope that we win something.

And you keep harping on about Luke Shaw like he is prime Roberto Carlos. The guy had one good season after being at the club for 7 years. Is that supposed to impress me? The fatty would have cost us 3 points against West Ham, had it not been for De Gea.

HE did make and do with what he had, which was lingard as the playmaker of the team, perera and matic behind him and 'lazy cant move' martial upfront and you said he would never get top4 but he came 3rd, you said it was lucky, then he came 2nd, now your claiming its not fifa

I guess it was his tactical ineptness that made him bring on Matic and Lingard against WH who won the game for us.

Tuchel inherited a a squad that spent a record breaking £250m the summer before, he had a CL squad ready.

Winning or losing a single match doesn't determine anything, even klopp lost the final to seville and pep lost with his £900m squad in the CL final

Ole has done more then any manager in making players world beaters, he turned around Shaws career, he bought maguire back to his best, he made rashford and greenward stars, he squeesed as much as he could out of mcfred, when mourihno who bought fred here didnt have a clue how to use him. He has got more out of players then well experienced managers like LVG and Mourinho could get.
his player coaching is second to none and anyone who doesnt think so,doesnt know anything about football.

Again your wrong, Before this summers sigings ole has spent £280m, less than mourinho and about the same as LVG, even with this summers signings its not 500M, but its unrealistic to count those signings just yet.

Therefore you should pinch your nose and swallow the harsh truth now, ole has outperformed your favourite mourinho and LVG with less money spent.

Your right, its the best team we have had since a long time, and i wonder why that is, :13:

If we had Conte as our manager, I would be saying with my chest that we will win something this season, but under your hero Ole, I can only hope that we win something.

Its your chest that ruined MU in the last decade then, because it was due to you people we sacked lvg after winning a FA cup because you garenteed us the EPL and the CL if we got jose, now a rookie is outperforming him in every department and now you cant take it.

And you keep harping on about Luke Shaw like he is prime Roberto Carlos. The guy had one good season after being at the club for 7 years. Is that supposed to impress me? The fatty would have cost us 3 points against West Ham, had it not been for De Gea.

It was Roberto Carlos who actually believed that, not me :)))

Its not about being at the club for 7 years, if you had been following us you would know he had a terrible time with a broken leg and being bullied by your favourite jose,

Btw, do you still belive brandon williams is better than him :)))
