Don't know who you are supporting but who do you think will outscore the other?

Both are good but they have not had the impact in WC's that they do at the club level. I dont remember a single great game from either in WC's like we saw with Maradona, Pele, Zidane etc.

Difficult 1 to call. Neither team is expected to get deep into the tournament. And as mentioned above neither have performed amazingly in international tournaments.

CR7 will play close to goal and probably as a number 9. Everything goes through Messi when Argentina play. I'll go with Messi .

I won't be supporting Argentina, but I suppose Messi is more likely to have a better WC,since he has better teammates. He can also drop deep and do well there.Ronaldo can't do that anymore.

CR7 has already set a very high benchmark for Messi.

Messi will have to play his heart out to achieve what Ronaldo has achieved today..

Because everytime I see Messi playing, it gives a strange feeling (basically considering the fact that he is also a world-class player) of that he isn't capable of handling pressure.

It’ll be Messi for sure - he needs to **** 3 times .........

SOCHI (Reuters) - Spain defender Gerard Pique accused Cristiano Ronaldo of diving to win a penalty and a crucial free-kick in Friday’s epic 3-3 draw with Portugal and praised his side for battling back after a chaotic week in which coach Julen Lopetegui was sacked.

Ronaldo struck the first goal of his memorable hat-trick to put Portugal ahead in the fourth minute after going down in the area from a challenge from Nacho. He later converted an exquisite late free-kick to level the thrilling encounter after winning a foul following a tussle with Barcelona’s Pique.

“Cristiano is very prone to diving and they award him almost every foul,” Pique told reporters after the extraordinary spectacle in Sochi between the two heavyweights which set the World Cup alight.

“We picked ourselves up again after a lot of problems because starting a World Cup by conceding a penalty in the second minute and going behind is difficult but we scored three goals and we have to be happy with how the game went.”

Spain’s ability to come back in the game after Ronaldo’s first two goals was all the more impressive given the turmoil that had gripped the team after Lopetegui was sacked on Wednesday for negotiating a move to Real Madrid behind the back of Spanish Football Federation president Luis Rubiales.

Pique, who is famous for his open disliking for Barca’s arch-rivals Madrid, said now was not the time to analyse whether it was right or wrong to dismiss Lopetegui but hinted he disagreed with his former coach’s methods in the negotiations.

“We all have to pull together now, it’s a situation that no-one has enjoyed but the World Cup has started, and when it’s over that’s when we can tell the story, we need to speak as little as possible and focus on football,” Pique said.

“The fact he negotiated with Madrid doesn’t bother me, a huge club came for him, the way he did it is up for debate. There are thousands of opinions, the president didn’t like it and took his decision and the players have accepted it.”

Spain striker Diego Costa produced an explosive performance and pledged to “keep working and keep on shutting people up” after his two goals answered critics who believe he does not fit into the team’s style of play.

The Atletico Madrid forward also declared his admiration for Ronaldo after the Portuguese upstaged his two goals with his whirlwind hat-trick.

“There will always be a debate, that’s good as it means there is competition in the team,” Costa said.

“I have to congratulate Cristiano, they criticise him and just look at what he does. People would be better off leaving him alone. I wish I was like him.”

Never been a Real fan, but these Barca players (& their Messi worshipers) are making it difficult by every day to be a Barca fan.

Can't compare Messi and Ronaldo', says Silva

Kratovo - Portugal's Adrien Silva refused to be drawn on comparisons between teammate Cristiano Ronaldo and Argentina's Lionel Messi after wildly contrasting fortunes for the global stars in their opening games at the World Cup.

Ronaldo rescued Portugal with a hat-trick in a thrilling 3-3 draw with title contenders Spain, while Messi missed a penalty as Argentina were held 1-1 by tournament newcomers Iceland.

"You can't compare Messi with Ronaldo," Leicester City midfielder Silva said Sunday. "We have a leader, he's with us and he must do what he must do. He has to help us as best as he can."

"The result was positive," Silva added. "It wasn't the one that we expected though, but still we tried not to lose the game. That's what was most important for us.

"We did our best at every moment. Spain tried to change the course of the game but we resisted well so we feel good about it."

Ronaldo's treble was the 51st in World Cup history and saw him become just the fourth player to score at four different editions of the tournament.

It was a clear sign of intent from a player who is dreaming of adding a World Cup winner's medal to his vast collection of honours with Manchester United, Real Madrid and Portugal.

Portugal reached the semi-finals in 2006, the closest Ronaldo has come to the title, although the finals in Russia are likely the 33-year-old's last chance at World Cup glory.

"It would be more difficult without him but he's on our side and we hope he continues to be with us, so why speculate on something like that?" Silva said.

"Apart from everything else he sets a good example for all of us to follow. Not only during the game but with how he behaves and what sort of person he is."

Im not sure if it will be ronaldos last wc, he might still be playing in 4 years time considering how fit he is.

But this time around it looks like he will play his heart out to have a big impact.

Ronaldo scored again yesterday, what can Messi do?

On a serious note, Li Messi is truly a wonderful footballer, undoubtedly the best of his generation when it comes to pure football skills. He needs to raise his game today, otherwise a draw might end his WC dream!!!

Croatia will be as tough as it gets in group stages, but Arges can out score them. This is a very compact Croatian team, they'll dominate possession in midfield; but missing a goal poacher.

Wish Arges don't lose it, so that Messi has one last active game.

Messi might be looking for cheap flights to Buenos Aires right now one that saves him some tax :smith

CR7 all the way so far.

Most likely, he'll be out next game. Fingers crossed, Iran seems to be a better squad and their managers knows CR better than anyone.

Won't be surprised if Iran wins it 2-1.

Iran played much better in the second game, however 2-1 would be quite a stretch but this WC has had a lot of upsets so far. If only Daeei was still playing.

To be honest Ronaldo's destroyed Messi in last few years as far as playing for the country is concerned. I wish it was close but i hate to admit it's not. Messi seems to have given up. Looks lost and frustrated. Zero presence in both matches so far.

Despite Ronaldo having a bunch of mediocre unknowns as his teammates and Messi having some big stars such as Higuain, Aguero, Di Maria etc

Was Messi playing in this match? Must have missed him.

Sardar Azmaoun will break his record. These days average scores have reduced, also most Asian teams have improved considerably, hence like Ali, this kid can't get a dozen every WC/Asia cup qualifier against BD, IND, Thailand .... but he has 23 goals so far in 35 games; starts for Rubin Kazan as No. 9 and he'll end up in top 5 leagues by next year.

What Iran is missing a CM like Karim Bagheri. He scored over 50 goals for Iran as No. 6!!!

True, Bagheri was a beast, especially his long range shots and free kicks.

This is a poor Arges team and Croats knew that - they double marked him leaving space for other, who couldn't take the advantage. Today he was playing as mid-fielder, for which that coach guy should be sacked immediately. He didn't start Banega, Biglia, Pavon or De Maria; and left out Pastore at home.

I get under the skin of Messi fanatics, because they deny everything; but guy is a genius, really feeling sorry for him today. Also, Messi fans will completely ignore that in last 2 games, other 2 No. 10s (Sigurdsson & Mordic), kept him in pocket. If Croatia wins this WC, Luka Mordic will reach the status of Mathaus, Zidane, Pirlo, Iniesta, Muller, Dunga .....

I rate Beckenbauer as much as i rate Pele, Maradona. He was THE man when he was out on the pitch for Germany. Versatile, tactically astute, never gave up, held the defense as libero and scored goals when it mattered. When someone as great as Messi looks as helpless and disinterested it goes massively against him if he is to be called the greatest. His achievements for Barcelona as well as Ronaldo's for Madrid mean little until they prove how well they can lift teams that aren't as star studded and well managed as their rich clubs. Its like you cant rate Zidane as a club manager with his Madrid trophies.

CR7 all the way. Messi is a genius but a weak leader and a bottler as well.

If my life is at stake and I've to choose one of these players, I'll always choose Ronaldo over Messi, always. In a similar way, I'll choose McGrath over Akram. 'Magic' or 'genius' doesn't cut it.

However as per law of averages, Messi is bound to perform in the next game. Nigeria saved Argentina's skin.

Don’t overdo this.

Ronaldo had not converted a free kick in a gazillion attempts before the last one that made people do all crazy.

He got a lucky penalty and De Gea gifted him a goal.

In short 2 lucky goals, two spectacular goals none of which that Messi has not done for his country.

I follow football once every four years..got to put a face and country to some names like messi, neymar, ronaldo and salah. only ronaldo looks like a top footballer..others look ordinary and useless, especially salah and messi.

Messi is poor at penalties as is evident by his recent record. Missed half of his last 10 penalties.

Having said that Ronaldo's cheergirls need to calm down. He converted his 40th something freekick for Portugal recently he's been that bad.

Do or Die for Messi. Although the Argentinian attack is very apparent and all you have to do is keep the ball away from Messi (which the Croatians did) to win. Everyone was just trying to give the ball to Messi. That useless coach should actually come up with some plays not involving Messi.

ohh the messi whiners come out. Messi bottled it in the last WC, the stage was set and he had the golden opportunity to take it but let it go, now he seems finished at international level.

Ronaldo on the other hand is dragging 10 team mates on his back at 33 years of age, unlike Messi whos given up at only 30 years of age, Ronaldo is playing his heart out. Give the guy some credit.

That stat is from major tournaments overall, not great but it's a lot harder to convert them compared to penalties for example never mind ones vs Iceland and this WC for CR7 thus far has been decent in contrast so it makes little sense to use this oppourtunity to berate him, Messi deserves criticism though.

Well said, not denying that Lionel is arguably the most gifted in history but what does that mean when you just throw in the towel when it matters especially at the international level? he can salvage some pride by playing his heart out against Nigeria and lead by example with a positive attitude no matter what.

Take the 4 goals IN 2 games away and Ronaldo is about as poor as Messi accross world cups. There is no doubt last year or two he's taken his legacy to the next level by finally delivering for Portugal. There's nothing to suggest Messi can't put one over him though. He's a great player. They both are. Don't see the point in trashing one at the expense of the other. The ball's well and truly in Messi's court and i don't doubt his ability to put it right back, no one does deep down.

If Messi makes up for his past I wouldn't bring up his past failures because he would have proven himself, likewise there is no point in bringing up how Ronaldo has been poor across World Cups; anyhow you take away those 4 goals and he still has done compatibly better then Messi at the international level. Moreover, man for man Portugal are inferior to Argentina but despite this CR7 has found a way to carry his team, it really is CR7 or nothing for his country.

In contrast, Argentina may be out of form; but their leader just doesn't inspire and brings the entire team down with his poor body language; and for someone of his class he has done nothing at all on the football pitch irrespective of tactics, position or team form, so when people defend him going missing against Iceland and Croatia then there will always be criticism, his fans are the worst cheer leaders by far in any sport.

That's not to say am counting him out against Nigeria, he definitely has the chance to make up for his woes during the group phase and credit will be given where due, don't expect the same from Messi fans when CR7 does well though.

Oh my word what a penalty that was by Harry Kane ! this is what you call leading from the front

Well one of them is gone - the other could go as well.

Oh well, they will finally get to meet at the world cup, down at the airport!

Both equally poor and none should make the WC 23 men squad. However, I must say CR started better and Leo finished better.
