In a major blow to Team South Africa in the ongoing Cricket World Cup 2019, their speedster Dale Steyn has been ruled out of the marquee event. Steyn, South Africa’s fifth highest ODI wicket-taker of all time, withdrew from the Indian Premier League (IPL) with the same issue and has already missed the first two games of his team’s campaign at the World Cup.

36-year-old Dale Steyn had surgery for this problem in 2016 and has been plagued with issues with his shoulder before and since that procedure. He has had a recurrence of the problem and will be unavailable for the foreseeable future.

South Africa have started this tournament with two losses, with defeats to England and Bangladesh in their opening fixtures. They are due to take on India on Wednesday 5 June at the Hampshire Bowl in Southampton. They will now be going into that important fixture, and the rest of this tournament, without Steyn.

“Dale has struggled really hard to get back into the team. It’s been a tough two-year, two-and-a-half years for him and he would need support right now. It’s important that us as the team and the management make sure there’s things in place for him to assist him, to be there for him. He needs love at the moment,” Du Plessis said at the pre-match press conference.

“It’s a tough time for him. He’s tried really hard to get fit for this campaign. He was bowling unbelievably well in the lead-up to this tournament and the IPL he was at his best. Unfortunately, it happened there in the IPL in those two games that he played there,” the skipper said.

While he didn’t blame IPL but Du Plessis was thinking aloud what if Steyn wasn’t picked by the RCB as late replacement.

“Had he not been picked up for IPL, who knows where Dale would have been right now. We can’t control that. So it is important for me that we make sure that we are there for him because I know he’s been trying hard to make sure he is ready to try and make an impact on which will be his last World Cup.”

Steyn will be replaced in the South African squad by left-arm quick Beuran Hendricks who made his ODI debut in January this year against Pakistan. Hendricks’ returns in ODI cricket have been limited so far, with just one wicket from two matches, but he has had more success in T20 Internationals where he has 16 wickets at an average of 18.93. Hendricks claimed a career-best T20I haul in January, also against Pakistan, when he took 4/14 at Centurion.

Hendricks has the ability to bowl with real pace, reaching 140kph at times, while also swinging the ball late. As a left armer he also offers some variation to the South African attack.

The news is a serious blow to South Africa, whose campaign has also been hit by injuries to two other fast bowlers. Anrich Nortje, who had originally been part of the World Cup squad, was ruled out of the tournament with a fractured thumb in the week before South Africa departed to the UK. Lungi Ngidi has also since picked up a hamstring strain, which is likely to keep him out of the next few South Africa matches. Vernon Philander is unavailable due to injury as well.

Why is a replacement allowed? They should be forced to use their squad of 15 which is now 14.

Even in Football, no replacements are allowed after tournmanet starts. What's the use of 15 member squad if you can just replace them anytime with real or "fake" injuries????

'Had he not been picked up for IPL, who knows where Dale would have been right now'

This right there.

I am all for players earning money, but not at the cost of national duty.

I see players from Pakistan taking part in BPL, CPL, (fit anyother league etc) & PSL.

Now what does that do?

Amir's work load need to be managed.
Amir wants to be played against big teams and in big matches only.
etc. etc.

That's not even 10% of the real damage it does to the player.

The real damager & absolutely the biggest is:

A player stops focussing on his technique and become a slogger. Instead of playing a season of county or domestic first class cricket, where that player could impart the technical know how he learned over the years in international cricket to youngsters in domestic cricket, he is focussed on leagues and cheap money.

He stops focussing on getting his wrist right and instead focus on how to save runs in t20 overs. He is too tired to make an effort for improvement, which can help him and his team in the long run a lot.

This is an absolute disaster and that's why only PSL entry should be allowed for players.

If he can’t bowl 4 overs in IPL, how could he have lasted one game this World Cup. Also he isn’t anything special in Odis, Morne was the real deal.

He could have been fit.. played two games for SA in the World Cup and hen got injured and there is really not guarantee that SA would have even won the first two games. That’s how sports and injuries work.

Steyn is a spent force. He was not going to make any impact this WC anyway.

What Faf should cry about is the inept batting of South Africa. If a 36 yr old broken down bowler is your savior, then they deserve to go home after 1st round.

Most importantly, Steyn would have broken down anyway if he bowled 10 overs in an ODI game.

Didn't Faf delay his joining with the team to prepare for the world cup so he can play more games under CSK. :)))

Steyn couldn't last 8 overs and SA picked him for 110 over tournament. Lungi was apparently rushed too and he broke down. Now they are keeping him around without knowing how long it will take to get him playing. Why? Just let him go.

They forced Amla to bat with concussion. What is going on with South Africa?

Doesn't matter his past by his sell date its was just his aura also he was not that a beast in ODI as he was with red ball SA are missing Morne Morkel

Players have a short shelf life and will want to maximize their earnings in the game. Can the PCB devise a policy where they compensate a player for forgoing his T-20 contract? Will the franchise ever pick the player again in the future? Hard to balance everything

Steyn is on his last legs. It is foolish to think that he is going to give up millions to stay fit for the World Cup.

He would probably have been injured anyway. He is physically a spent force.

He would have probably got injured at the WC so it's wrong just to blame the IPL.

Probably thought to himself. "I may not last world cup.. lemme make some $$$ while i am still not counted a retired player or my pay package may take a 50% hit". .

He even broke down in his 1st spell in our 1st test against them last year, he is too injury prone these days. Better to retire and maximize earnings in T20 leagues. I don't think SA will miss him, he has never been a great ODI bowler and this is a declined version of Steyn we are talking about.

He bowled 8 overs in the ipl. If that is enough to injure a bowler then I don't think this would have mattered.

Also every Indian bowler bowled much more in the ipl.
