News just coming in that he has suffered tissue damage to his left heel which would take about 4-6 weeks to recover.
Pretty sad news for fans world over.

South Africa suffered a massive blow after star pacer Dale Steyn was not only ruled out of the opening Test against India but is expected to sit out for four to six weeks, meaning he will miss the rest of Test series. Steyn left the field in little discomfort with a bruised left heel on Saturday on Day 2 of the first Test being played at Newlands in Cape Town. Steyn pulled up three balls into his 18th over after taking two for 51 in India's first innings. Steyn, 34, had not played in a first-class match since suffering a fractured shoulder in a Test in Australia in November 2016.

According to PTI, the South African pacer has damaged a tissue and will be out for a minimum period of four to six weeks, which effectively rules him out of the ongoing Test series against the visiting Indian team.

Steyn in fact was getting into the groove as he had figures of 2 for 51 with wickets of opener Shikhar Dhawan and wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha during his comeback Test.

He was out of action for one year after a major surgery for shoulder dislocation.

He recently made a comeback in competitive cricket and Cricket South Africa (CSA) did not play during the four-day Test against Zimbabwe to preserve him for the India series.

He was included in a four-man pace attack for the India Test despite coach Ottis Gibson expressing concern about risking him because of a lack of match practice.

In the only cricket since his injury, Steyn bowled 18 overs in five Twenty20 matches for his franchise, the Titans, as well as 12 overs in a low-key appearance for an Invitation XI against the touring Zimbabweans in December.

He should retire for the betterment of CSA. This uncertainty certainly doesn’t help the team plans.

I wonder if we can put up a score in the 2nd innings, but they still got Morkel, Rabada and Philander.

This could really spell the end to his career. Really sad.
Will not make it to the odi wc at this rate.

DAMN!

Was looking forward to him in this series, he may as well just retire now.

Terrible, terrible news.....Seemed like he was finally fit after the long break from Test cricket. I'm close to breaking something

A shoulder injury at mid thirties is possibly end to a fast bowlers carrier but then again he come back after it and now the heel injury is shocking....I am not sure what he feels now

Might be this will be the end to the finest fast bowler I've seen along with mcgra. Truly one of a kind

Years later, people will look back at his record and wonder how he did it

Well, merde. He should really have played some first class cricket before attempting to play test cricket.

What a shame! I hope he doesnt retire. Cricket needs him. The best bowler in the world.

At this age Steyn should focus on ODIs, a recommendation given to Shoaib Akhtar as well when he started aging..
17 overs is alot of work load for a bowler his age who wants to bowl fast

He should retire.May not end up as South Africa’s top wicket taker, but he will surely end up as their greatest bowler.A true great of the game.

He should retire but he will never give up

If he is not 100% i don't want to see him playing with half fitness and ruining that ecstatic stats

Even if he retire now his stature will be soo high....but again someone of the era deserves the 500 wicket mark its him goddamn

I really want to see him play one last time, possibly against the Aussies. One last burst!

Well he has talked about Misbah being his inspiration, Brett doing well till the end and posted a tweet about Hogg(wanting to play till 50), I don't think he will easily give up

He is only a few wickets away from becoming South Africa's highest wicket taker in Test Cricket, that could be the only motivation for him to still wanting to play Test Cricket or the motivation to have a hundred test caps under your belt. South African players are not that highly paid and that might also be playing a role in him wanting to play all formats.

Dale Steyn has been ruled out of bowling in the ongoing Sunfoil Test match against India due to a heel injury sustained on the second day of play at PPC Newlands on Saturday. The fast bowler landed awkwardly in footmarks while bowling shortly before the tea break, with subsequent scans confirming tissue damage to the foot.

A decision on Steyn’s availability to bat will be made in consultation with the medical committee as the match progresses.

Proteas team manager, Dr Mohammed Moosajee explained: “Dale landed awkwardly in foot-holes during his delivery stride in his 18th over today. This caused a significant strain to the foot, leading to tissue damage on the underside of the foot in the heel area. He is unlikely to bowl further in this Test match because the recovery period could be anything from four to six weeks, which means he is likely to miss the remainder of the series against India.

“ We have contacted one of the leading foot and ankle surgeons attached to Cricket South Africa’s medical committee to have a look at him tomorrow to give us an opinion going forward. It’s important to note that this unfortunate injury was freakish because of the way the foot landed in the foot-holes and it is no way related to his bowling loads or not being match ready.

Congrats India! You're likely to succeed now. I hope SA replaces him with a genuinely pacey and effective bowler otherwise its no contest.

Now I am starting to doubt the injury, is more happening in background? That Indian series is supposed to be prime-focus of SA folks, how can they over-stress themselves to such point when they were doing good around that (I know Steyn gets injured a lot but the manner is not right this time).

The current injury has nothing to do with previous injuries or lack of fitness.
Steyn had fully recovered, this is a freak injury.

Conspiracy theories?

At the Highveld we would have needed an extra batsman in any case. Morris/Phehlukwayo comes in.
I doubt SA will go for a strike bowler, namely Ngidi (unless they drop one of the quicks, unlikely though)

This was a freakish injury rather than fitness related in my opinion and 4-6 week rest is not something big. He should be fit and should play some FC before rushing back to Tests. With a 4 man pace quartet, he doesn't have that much burden that he was having post Kaliis era.

Good mediums hopefully will be able to contain India. Calling spinner in is death! Current batsman are fine if they find form.

This India series is really only a warm-up for the main event: the series against Australia which starts in six weeks.

I’m going to the Durban and Port Elizabeth Tests against Australia, and there was always a risk that Steyn would be worn out by then due to the BCCI insisting upon back-to-back series.

Steyn’s injury makes his workload more realistic, and saves him for the bigger series.

Quite snobbish of you to say that. The no.1 vs no. 2 team are playing right now. And based on the action we have seen during the 2 days it has been pretty gripping stuff. I really don't know what your problem with the Indian team is.

terrible news.. no point watching india beat a steynless south africa. I hope India rests Bhuvi to make things even.

Will Steyn be back when Australia tours here. Think SA's bowling is what could be making the difference between SA and Ind but this won't be case with Australians who will have Starc, Hazlewood and Cummins.

Oh, I freely admit that overall India is better than Australia.

But South African and Australian conditions are similar, and Starc-Hazelwood-Cummins is a far stronger pace attack for these conditions than India can field. That’s all.

Good old fashioned jealousy. The overall standing of India in the Cricket world right now makes them sick to their stomach. It wasnt supposed to pan out like this in a million years. What India does on and off the cricket field is sooo rudely opposite of what the Old Boys club had everyone believe that now it is unfathomable for them to accept that they had their calculations dead wrong. It makes it even more harder for them when BCCI chooses to rub it in their faces at every goddamn opportunity. You can see it in the Commentary box too when the likes of Keppler, Holding et.al have a good old fashioned whine and still think that their Idea and brand of cricket is far superior. I can sense the frustrations boiling over when all they can do is take subtle digs at India when India is not doing well.

I just love it. These are the best times for Indian fans .... nightmare for Junaids :)

I think its best that CSA move on and so does Dale Steyn. His body doesn't have what it takes to be a test cricketer anymore. Not sure about ODI & T20. Maybe he should play t20 league cricket.

SA still quite strong without Steyn !!! Sure, the Indians are relived a little .... but then, which Team wouldn’t ???

Australia has a much better pace attack than India no doubt about that. And if your are eagerly waiting for that series then no problem with that too. But calling a series between the top sides in the world a warm up series is a bit disrespectful especially when India have competed decently till now :). Even Rabada said during the PC yesterday that "India showed they weren't just gonna roll over and die".

I think more than anything else he is a bit obsessed with fast bowling and according to him India doesn't have the pacers to excite him. He still loves watching Pakistan play.

that he is ... what he didn't expect was India being No.1. It will take him another million yrs before he realizes and accepts that spinners can win matches too and that we have decent fast bowlers and most importantly fantastic batsmen that are the best the Cricket world has ever seen. Let him be. It wasnt meant to be.

India lost their last away series in Australia, England, New Zealand and South Africa and refuses to play Pakistan.

I don’t think anyone takes their Test ranking seriously: it’s a mathematical anachronism caused by having avoided difficult away series in recent years!

thanks for proving my point .... it is no longer necessary to Win Series in those countries to be considered #1. There are other counties that count just as much. Welcome to the new world order. And you should look up your own posts on how bad Pakistan are in the "Do runs against SL Count" thread.
