South Africa fast bowler Dale Steyn does not plan to play any more white-ball cricket after the 2019 World Cup in England and Wales.

Steyn has played 116 ODIs for his country, but cannot see a future for himself past the format's flagship competition next summer.

"I will be trying to get to that World Cup (in England). But after the World Cup I don't see myself playing white-ball cricket for South Africa. By the time the next World Cup comes, I will be 40," said the seamer during an event.

With 178 wickets to his name, Steyn is the nation's seventh most prolific wicket-taker in ODIs, but hasn't represented the Proteas in the format since 2016.

"If you look at the (SA) batting line-up, our top six have played 1,000 games, but the lower half - from Nos.8-11 who are currently playing - not even 150 games. You need to draw on experience," reasoned the 35-year-old.

"I hope that will be my trump card when the selection comes to the World Cup. I may not necessarily play all the time. But I think my experience will help with me just being there."

On the topic of Test cricket, the quick spoke in an evergreen manner about the format, having come through two Tests against Sri Lanka without ailment. His 421 Test wickets is a joint-South African record.

"When it comes to Test cricket, I would like to play as long as possible. I have finally come out of a cloud of injuries. I broke my shoulder and in my first game on return (against India at Cape Town), I landed in a foothole. It was rotten luck.

"It's quite difficult to come back from a broken shoulder, especially with your bowling arm. I feel that [the injury] is gone and now I am fit. I played two Test matches without an injury, bowled at a good pace and never went off the field because of niggles. It's a big plus."

Steyn will be hoping that fitness remains when South Africa travel to England for the 2019 Cricket World Cup, which starts on 30 May.

Hes played like 8 odis per year, he should just retire and let someone younger get to play rather than breakdown during the tournament

The way he is bowling, he should retire right away. He looks like a shell of his past brilliance.

Steyn looked below average against India and against Srilanka, he looked even worse.

Surprised he's retiring from ODI, would have expected to retire from Test cricket.

I think you have to admire his resolve and passion for the game. Fast-bowling can be very mentally draining, especially for someone who hsd consistently dialed it over 140-145 for close to 11 years. And despite his age and recent injuries that can leave anyone demoralized for good, he is fighting to regain some amount of his past brilliance. I think he has earned the right to play in atleast 3 series to have a chance to prove himself.

...if he doesn't, drop him. Not like South Africa have any shortage of fast-bowlers. Ngidi is already knocking down the door.

I just hope it isn't in the series against us that he decides to prove himself. Thankfully, we probably won't have our overseas walking wicket, Professor Hafeez so hopefully no free wickets for Steyn this time around

Experience personified :hafeez This is far from Hafeez's mindset when it pertains to his role in the team.

Started off really poor in odi, however past 5 years his average has dropped to a very respectable average

I have a lot more respect for him than compared to a chicken like AB de Villiers.

Was frightening at his best but age and injures are catching up with him.

At least he is going to play the world cup which AB should've done as well. Abandoning your team right before a huge world tournament is a very sad thing to do, that too when you are their best player.

He is not a great ODI bowler. So, his absence won't have made much difference either.

Even in tests, SA's fast bowling is hardly an issue. They already have the services of Rabada, Philander and Ngidi. The issue is batting at the moment. However, he has certainly earned the right to retire when he wants.

Steyn can still crank it up to 145-150 km/hr even at this age of 35 if he lets himself go but was it wise on his part given the fact his body is now struggling to hold up to international cricket. Maybe cutting down on pace and bowling within himself can reduce the strain on his body?

With quantity of hacks around, I believe a 130ish out-swinger is enough :yk

Lost SA the SF of the last WC, ultimate choker.. a very ordinary bowler .

He has been ruled out of the World Cup. I think the time has come for him to hang his boots. He is still a quality bowler, but he is physically a spent force. He can barely bowl 5 overs without getting injured these days.

He had a pretty substandard ODI career, and boosted his numbers significantly thanks to tormenting a deplorable Pakistan side in 2013. He never had the aura of Wasim, McGrath etc. in white ball cricket.

Dale Steyn ruled out of the ICC Cricket World Cup with injury

Steyn, South Africa’s fifth highest ODI wicket-taker of all time, withdrew from the Indian Premier League with the same issue and has already missed the first two games of his team’s campaign at the Cricket World Cup.

The South African quick bowler had surgery for this problem in 2016 and has been plagued with issues with his shoulder before and since that procedure. He has had a recurrence of problem and will be unavailable for the foreseeable future.

South Africa have started this tournament with two losses, with defeats to England and Bangladesh in their opening fixtures. They are due to take on India on Wednesday 5 June at the Hampshire Bowl in Southampton. They will now be going into that important fixture, and the rest of this tournament, without Steyn.

Steyn will be replaced in the South African squad by left arm quick Beuran Hendricks who made his ODI debut in January this year against Pakistan. Hendricks' returns in ODI cricket have been limited so far, with just one wicket from two matches, but he has had more success in T20 Internationals where he has 16 wickets at an average of 18.93. Hendricks claimed a career best T20I haul in January, also against Pakistan, when he took 4/14 at Centurion.

Hendricks has the ability to bowl with real pace, reaching 140kph at times, while also swinging the ball late. As a left armer he also offers some variation to the South African attack.

lol, he was never a good ODI bowler, wasted a spot for no reason. Should retire from tests too, South Africa has moved on and has lots of new talents.

Genius bowler who thought length bowling in the death overs was a good ploy, unfortunately SA didn't give Abbott the ODIs he got, that hiy was better in LOIs

Morne Morkel was always a much superior ODI bowler than him

SA have been pinning their hopes on him for years in LOI, and that has cost them. They shouldnt have relied on AB and steyn. Hope the IPL was worth it.

Did he play in IPL? :inti

Not at all, he was on holiday in India; I also heard they have world class physios, he was doing some light training and continuing rehab advise regarding the shoulder. He was sure to take good care before the tournament, a final hurrah for him.

So he has been on paid vacation :butt

Anyway blessing in disguise, SA are not winning the WC and I rather not see Steyn go out on another tournament humiliation. Hope he recovers well enough for a send off in Tests at home, not sure if he can go on like this, there comes a time when the heart wants to fight but the body just doesn't respond - Oscar De La Hoya shaykh

What a bowler he was. But this is a young mans game. Time for South Africa to move on.

A big rebuild awaits South Africa after this WC.

He had an average of 34 in that series.

Team looks to be going out

why bother having him in, good excuse to also use, one of our key players was injured

time for him to retire to be honest, he is too much of a liability for the side
stick to IPL where the money is like AB
