What an innings of 72* (47) in a semi-final.

Is there a better finisher than him in international cricket? Opened the innings and took his side to a win!

He has been absolute class from minute one at this tournament. A phenomenal innings of patience, grit and determination. Inspiring!

He's been amazing this tournament.

Finished the game off for us once he found his timing.

He was a bit slow most of his inning but came off at the end, but real momentum was created by Neesham.

He was struggling initially but recovered well later on.

I still think he should not be in the T20 side. He seems like an accumulator. They already have two other accumulators (Conway and Williamson).

He's been a revelation as opener for us and cemented a spot in the team. He is a good striker of the ball, he struggled early on but was able to fire big time in the clutch.

Jimmy Neesham saved him today..
It seems like people who don't watch us play or are use to seeing players lay a base and go for it.

He struggled for his timing and was slow but it was fine given we didn't have much batting depth left, I thought he paced his innings fine as he has the game to catch up like he did. It was all about laying a platform and then just launching, like the team did tonight.

Boss you were losing it in the match thread and writing eulogy of New Zealand cricket, now acting as if all of this was going to plan.

You have to admit Mitchell was swinging it wildly throughout the innings and was hardly able to time anything. Once Neesham came and changed the game around, then Mitchell also found his timing.

The game was won by Jimmy Nesham.

Take this as example,

5 overs, 60 to win.

Phillips got out, Mitchell had no clue of Livingstone's leg break. He got only 3 of 5 deliveries.

4 overs, 57 to win. This is England's game now.

Neesham smashes Jordan for 25 runs.

3 overs, 32 to win. That makes it much easier for New Zealand.

2 overs, 20 runs to win.

Then Neesham got out. Mitchell smashed a couple of sixes and it became pretty easy for them.

Point is - he stayed until the end.

Neesham assault was a calculated one and Mitchell let him get on with it and preserved his wicket for the final go.

Goes to show the amazing improvement in the strength of NZ domestic cricket over the last decade that a guy like Mitchell - a solid but unspectacular performer for ND and Canterbury - can be plucked out of obscurity and step up to the job required in internationals immediately.

Where did I write anything remotely close to a eulogy? Throughout I was supportive of Mitchell's batting because I knew what we had left and what he was capable of once he found his timing. We couldn't afford to lose more wickets since we don't bat deep.

When you don't have a long batting line up it's imperative you have an anchor who sees the innings through.

^This was Mitchell after Conway got out, the rest (Neesham, Phillips, Santner, Southee etc.) Just had to hit.

Looking good Mitchell again - he stays on for a while and NZ will have a big score.

Anything but a power hitter today - possibly playing a match-winning knock for NZ

Looked fantastic today.

Absorbed everything that England threw at him and really got on top of the bowling in the end.

Brilliant and well deserved 100 to him - match been taken away from England.

Last Wkt: Daryl Mitchell c Foakes b Broad 108(203) - 251/5 in 83.3 ov.

Brilliant innings comes to an end.

Top innings, could be the difference between NZ taking the win and slipping up to a loss.

Another good innings by Daryl Mitchell. Went on to make the most of the let off review early in his innings

He is a proper batter not a power hitter by any means. Has played the test series with a very good technique. Defense has been immaculate. Has taken Nicholls spot in the test team I believe.

Daryl mitchell brings up another century in the ongoing series vs England at Headingly, his 3rd of the series and 4th score over 50.

Mitchell has scored the most ever runs by a New Zealand batsman in a Test series in England. And he still has one innings left! Credit to him. A brilliant display.

Mitchell drops yet another catch in the series, he cost New Zealand a lot of runs at Trent Bridge with this.

A good batsman but his slip work is awful.

I think he is a better test player than LOI one. He does have the shots but in LOIs, that inning he played in WC semis wasn't very fluent and he doesn't have much to show in those format.

Wonder what his net run contribution is for the series in this context !

Daryl Mitchell's last four Test innings:

108
190
62*
109

He currently averages 63.21 in Test cricket.

New Zealand's Daryl Mitchell is a jack of all trades and master of one.

A late entrant to the international game, the 31-year-old made his international debut in 2019 after more than 200 games in New Zealand's domestic system, where contracts run for just seven months.

Now he is preparing for his second T20 World Cup semi-final in as many years, with New Zealand taking on Pakistan in Sydney on Wednesday.

It is almost exactly a year to the day after they defeated England in Abu Dhabi, thanks in no small part to Mitchell's unbeaten 72 off 47 balls.

"The nature of New Zealand's small population," explains Mitchell, "is that domestic cricket is seven-month contracts and the other five months gives you opportunities in the winter, whether you want to go overseas and play or pursue other things outside of cricket, which I think is really important."

New Zealand's domestic game only turned professional in 2005.

It was a move that meant players such as Mitchell wouldn't slip through the cracks as they were able to remain in the game rather than be forced to pursue alternative employment.

In 2021, Mitchell received a central contract from New Zealand Cricket, meaning that for the first time he was officially a cricketer for all 12 months of the year.

"As you're getting closer to the New Zealand set-up, you've got A tours and stuff like that which keeps you playing," said Mitchell.

"But I think it's important also to have a balance outside of the game that allows you to see that there's more to life than a game with a bit of wood and some leather."

Throughout his domestic career, the five months a year that Mitchell had off the sport were just as important to him as the seven months on.

When he first played at Northern Districts in 2012 as a 20-year-old, he was completing a bachelor's degree in exercise and sports science.

More recently, from 2018 to 2020 he worked as an assistant strength and conditioning coach at Waikato Rugby, in a return to the club where it all began.

Mitchell's father John is a former All Black who was playing for Waikato when Daryl was born.

The combination of a decade of hard work to reach the international game alongside spending off-seasons working outside the sport has given Mitchell the ability to recognise the honour that comes with playing international cricket, while also appreciating the sport in the context of the wider world.

"For me, any chance to get to play for New Zealand is really special and I just want to have that fern on my chest and be really proud to represent my country," Mitchell says.

"But, then again, it's a game of cricket. And we don't make it bigger than what it is."

Mitchell has the reputation of a man who gets things done. One of the stories of the 2021 World Cup was his success at the top of the order, where he averaged 34.66 and had a strike-rate of 140.54 having never previously opened the batting in T20 cricket.

This year, he is back in the middle order and playing with a fracture in his hand after taking a blow in the nets just three weeks before the Kiwis' first game.

"I would have been absolutely gutted if I had missed out and I'm just really lucky and grateful that where the fracture is in the hand it hasn't been too painful," Mitchell adds.

"And it's always a good reminder that anything can happen and that we're very lucky to be able to do what we do to be able to represent our country on the world stage.

"To open at the last World Cup was a really cool challenge, but at the same time batting in that five position is awesome as well.

"It's so different each time you go out to bat. You can be three for nothing or you can be flying and having to hit the first ball for six.

"But I think one of my skillsets is that I'm able to adapt to different positions and different situations, and that suits my role. I'm not bothered where I bat. I just want to win games of cricket for the country."

And on Wednesday, a year on from when he did exactly that against England, he'll have the chance to do it again. This time against Pakistan.

Gun batsmen, hope he's in the ODI XI for the WC next year. Could be handy down the order.

The PowerQuitter, let down his spineless countrymen when they needed him most

Second ODI hundred for Daryl Mitchell - out for 113 vs Pakistan in the 1st ODI

Fifty again today - looks set for another big innings in Pindi.

Was dropped by Naseem Shah but undeterred gets to his successive 100

Highlights of his hundred

Good things are happening for him. Had a very good World cup. Then got picked up by CSK for a big amount. Now Man of the match. Last season he was not even picked up by any team in the IPL. Nothing is subtitute for hardwork. It is paying him off. Played well in Bazball Tests too. Even though they lost he put up a brave fight.

Daryl Mitchell has signed up for PSL season 10 draft.

Good player to have in your squad. Handy bowler, good fielder, good batter. Teams would like him to be in their squad.

Good player to have. IPL leagues wouldn't touch him because he didn't have the strike rates needed for a foreign batter.
But he'll do well in PSL.

There’s no such thing as a "power hitter." It's simply about incremental hitting skills built on a solid batting foundation.

D. Mitchell has scored 6,500 runs in first-class cricket, including 20 centuries, 5 of which are at the Test level, along with 15 centuries in List A cricket and an average above 50.

In Pakistan, he might be labeled an "anchor" because of his consistency, but that’s inaccurate too – both labels are misleading.

Disgraceful knock trim him today.

63 (101)

Slowest 50 for NZ since 2014

He is a bit like a diesel locomotive...takes time to warm up and hit top speed.

Yesterday approach did not pay off. He was too cautious for too long against Indian spinners

Batting first was relatively easy compared to chasing. Don't know why he struggled, he was scared of the Indian spinners.
One of the worst ODI innings in the ICC tournaments.

I’m not sure the first Platinum pick of Mitchell by LQ was the wisest decision

He’s not looking too good atm

People criticize his strike rate although he is not that bad... A good middle order batter.
