Shane Warne on commentary referred to David Warner as the best opening batsman in the world.

Whilst he didn't clarify the statement, I assume he was meaning across all three formats.

Do you think it's a fair call by Warne or is there anyone better than Warner who plays all three formats?
 
dont really see a reason for disagreeing. cook has suffered a real bad slump in form so warner is probably the best opener across three formats
 
Nope.

He is BY FAR the best opening batsman in the world.
 
cook was his real competitor but real slump in form means warner is the best opening batsman in tests

The obvious two at the top would be Warner and Vijay based on performance over the past year. The two BD openers both scored tons in their last Test but that was against Zim. Cook has fallen away, Latham has done well recently.

I see that you are not giving Shahzad any accolades. I don't like the guy but of late he has done pretty well as a test opener albiet the sample size is quite limited.

You don't rate Shahzad? He has done fairly well.

I'm not giving him as much accolades because he's played most of his recent Tests in one country. Vijay and Warner have scored runs on a number of different surfaces over a longer period of time.
 
In all honesty these are the top 4 across all forms from past 2 years. T20 shouldn't hold much weight.

1. Warner
2. Dhawan
3. Shehzad
4. Hafeez

No Vijay is the best assuming hes talking only Tests.Warner failed badly in India
 
Yes, Warner is the best by far. Funny how we all thought that Cook would have this honour a couple of years ago.
 
Agree with him here. Warner and Vijay have been better than others.

never in my dreams, i could have think that vijay will be 2nd best opener. doesn't matter how worse the pool is....

this guy was really pathetic at the start. i am still amaze how he is performing....
 
Lols only a year or so ago many indians were calling Vijay FTB and now he is the second best opener in the world? I have not followed him but what has changed?
 
Cook was the best before this year but now Warner has overtaken Pak probably has the worst openers

He has LITERALLY owned all Indians.

No exaggerations.

I wanted Vijay to be thrown out when he first got selected but right now, he is India's best Test batsman if you consider EVERY condition.

Yes, better than Rahane who isn't that great in rank turners.

:facepalm: Reading your posts, you really seem to have some problems. Have you responsibility of defending every little thing about India? Just read my post again and see how a sensible Indian replied to it. That is how you reply to certain questions.

It is now many Indians are saying he is the second best opener, they didn't do that a year or so ago:/
 
Actually this discussion just shows how few world class opening batsmen there are who can play in all three formats.
 
Great knock by Warner. I can't help but wonder...

If if he was South African people would probably be jumping up and down screaming that he choked.

Was gone cheaply in the 3rd and 4th test in the 1st innings when the ball was swinging and seaming. Rest of the innings he had slightly easier conditions to score in but deserves credit for scoring runs.

And the ball stopped swinging in the 2nd innings? Don't make excuses. He outscored Cook in his own backyard.
 
Great effort, reminded of Sachin's knock against Australia while chasing 350, he also ended just short of getting his side across the line.
 
1 Test century outside of Australia and South Africa. Cook and Vijay are better players outside of there respective home conditions.

Warner is good but I think in tests he's a little ovverated outside of Asia. Lacks the tempremeant to score big in difficult conditions imo.

I call these goosebumps innings. I support neither Aus or SA, and yet Warner's knock still had me on the edge of my seat.

Btw cook has scored 766 runs across an ashes series in Australia. Warner would never get that.
 
Warner is easily the best across formats. Sharma is not good enough for tests, Cook is not good enough for LOIs and Amla doesn't open in tests.
 
Meh. de Kock in ODIs and Cook in Tests.

Now that I have put my biases aside, Warner is indeed a top opener but terribly overrated in Tests.

Australian pitches are flat and they play 5 tests vs England. No reason why a FTB like Warner can't get 750 runs in a total of 5 tests.

I think he got some 400 runs in 2 tests vs NZ.

Cook is definitely a better test batsmen no doubt.
 
Absolutely marvellous innings from today but none of his teammates could stand up otherwise Australia would have won comprehensively

In Tests Cook is ahead of him but in LOIs no one comes close to Warner
 
Quinton De Kock is better as is Sharma in ODIs.

Overall though, I guess yeah.
 
The guy turned a corner in the last IPL. The responsibility of captaincy elevated his game. Earlier he used to make quickfire 50s or 60s and depart after giving a quick start to him. But the way he batted throughout the tournament matching Kohli shot for shot, especially in the semifinal and final when he batted through and finished the innings with great composure even if he was batting with the tailenders sometimes was a distinct change in him. Expected him to carry that form into the tour in Sri Lanka but was a bit underwhelming that tour. A bit left field this opinion, but I would like to see Warner captaining Australia at some point. He looked very calm as a captain in the IPL and Smith looks too petulant as a captain for my liking.
 
ODIs :

De Kock will overtake all of them.. The guy has potential to be as good as AB in odis...

Tests:

Cook followed by Warner and then Vijay and Latham.
 
De Kock is better imo.

So is Rohit Sharma and a case could be made for Amla too.

Yes. He is a very good opener who has consistently provided good starts for NZ. His breezy knocks ( which he needs to learn to convert into big ones) have helped his team so many times particularly given the fact that he had to bat with a 29 averaging opening partner Guptill.

Latham has good defence and the more he plays the better his stats will become.

On tough pitches/ conditions, I would have my money on Tom Latham rather than on Ross Taylor.He did well in India given the fact that it was his first tour here.
