Dawid Malan displaces Babar Azam to grab top position in ICC T20I Rankings for batsmen

You named Guptil twice. You put in Smith who has been in poor form for almost a year, you listed Gayle who hasn't been impressive in years and looked bad across numerous t20 leagues, you listed Hales, Buttler, Finch and Warner who are all terrific strikers of the ball yet nowhere near as consistent.

Heck, only Kohli, Williamson and Root even average in the same region Babar does in t20s. Neither of them have been part of a team as successful as Pakistan.

Gayle scored some brilliant hundreds to win the Bangladesh league. Babar was totally clueless in Caribbean league and did nothing of note in Bangladesh league either.

Hales, Buttler Finch and Warner are in total different class to babar.

Don't go by his average. He has 20 games and half of them are not out or something like that.

If anyone needed any proof that the ICC player ranking system needs to be revamped, this is it. He is not even in the top 10 T20 batsmen in international cricket - probably not even in the top 20.

Kohli, Warner, Munro, Root, de Villiers, du Plessis, Miller, de Kock, Finch, Roy, Hales, Guptill, Rohit, Dhawan, Rahul, Fakhar, Kusal Perera, Lewis, Stokes, Buttler, Bairstow, Morgan, Maxwell, Lynn etc. are all better T20 batsmen. I have probably missed a few names apart from these 24 names.

But but but Kapil was better than Imran because he was consistently rated #1 all-rounder in ODIs...

ICC ranking has it flaws. Like giving advantage to some one playing at home.

If a player or team 'consistently' comes in top then those flaws some time helps the team/player and some time goes against the player/team.

Now if you can manage to be on rank 1 for long periods like 8-10 years then you are simply the best because you over come those flaws and still on top.

Babar may or may not be the top T20 batsman, but if he can remain rank 1 for the next 8-10 years then we no one will question it. He can't be rank 1 for such a long period due to schedule, luck or some other flaws in ranking. Ranking has it's flaws, but imagine current Indian team remaining rank 1 for 10 years. That will be a different situation that them being on top for 1 year.

Your analogy is way off because Babar hasn't been rank 1 for even few months.

Like I said, you couldn't even name 20 players, so remake that list or stop bothering me.

T20I rankings don't mean anything. I don't even know why T20I exists. League T20 are the real deal.

T20I rankings are amusing to be honest. Teams or players move 4 or 5 spots by just having one good game. Totally unreliable rankings to be frank and the sample size is so low. Anyone now in top 5 can overtake Babar with one good T20I performance which makes the rankings not very reliable.

Can't blame the ranking, very few teams play T20I regularly. League T20 matches get far more importance. Babar being no.1 T20I batsman won't earn him big bucks in League T20. The quality of international T20 teams is very poor

If Babar can maintain the number one ranking for a decade like Kapil, he would go down as the greatest T20 batsman in history.

I got news for you, rankings were introduced in 1998, and Kapil's last ODI was in 1994.

There were no official rankings at that time, but the algorithm is applied retrospectively. That is why we know that Bradman achieved the highest ratings points in history followed by Steve Smith and Len Hutton.

Kapil during his peak years, i.e. the 1980s, was consistently rated as the best ODI all-rounder at a time when there were four elite all-rounders in the game.

You can check this thread to see a comparison of the ratings of Kapil and Imran in ODIs.

What a way to end the decade :)

Dawid Malan has jumped four spots to claim the No.1 position in the latest MRF Tyres ICC Men's T20I Player Rankings for batting.

England batsman Dawid Malan has seized the No.1 position in the MRF Tyres ICC Men’s T20I Player Rankings after a fruitful home series against Australia, which England won 2-1.

The 33-year-old left-hander has progressed four places after a series-topping run aggregate of 129, which included a player of the match effort of 66 in the first fixture. Malan, whose previous best ranking was second in November last year, is now eight rating points ahead of Pakistan’s Babar Azam.

This guy isn't even the regular in their team. Will be back on bench once Stokes and Roy are back. Shows you how farcical these T20 rankings are.

Roy comes in for Banton and Stokes comes in for Moeen/one of the pacers, he's in the team.

Babar Azam is a fine player but there are 10-15 superior T20I batsman than him.

The T20I rankings show that any half decent batsmen who has made enough bilateral appearances can cash in on the runs and reach no.1 in the rankings.

No Stokes won't come in for Moeen. He's a batting all-rounder. Anywhere below no.5 and you're only wasting him in your team. But yeah , I think Malan will play. Forgot about Billings , whom Stokes will most likely replace.

Roy
Butler
Bairstow/Banton
Morgan
Stokes
Malan
Moeen

Respect, the guy found his groove in PSL for Peshawar Zalmi and hasn’t looked back ever since.

PSL has done him as good as IPL for Jos Butler.

Malan will play at 3, at the moment Bairstow looks the most vulernable to dropping down the order. Moeen has currently been playing as the batting all rounder (although arguably shouldn't be in the team at all) so it's entirely realistic for Stokes to be the 6th bowling option along with 4 pacers and Rashid.

Roy
Buttler
Malan
Stokes
Morgan (I'd have Stokes and Morgan this way round personally with flexibility depending on the match situation)
Bairstow

Hafeez 3.0
Rahul
Maxwell
Butler
Finch

These are the 5 greatest T20i batsmen in the world.

Hard for some fans to admit this fact but neither of Kohli or Bobby belong in this league.

Pakistan captain Babar Azam’s series-topping 133 runs against Zimbabwe have helped him reduce the gap with top-ranked Dawid Malan by two rating points in the MRF Tyres ICC Men’s T20I Player Rankings, but he is still six points adrift of the England batsman.

• Leg-spinner Usman Qadir makes impressive entry; Madhevere, Chisoro also gain in latest update

Babar, who is currently the only one in the top five of all three formats in batting, had scores of 82 and 51 in the first two matches of the series but did not bat in the final match as Pakistan won by eight wickets to seal the series 3-0 in Rawalpindi on Tuesday.

Babar has been number one for a total of 774 days in four different stretches during his impressive career and was upstaged by Malan in September as the England batsman struck fine form during a 2-1 home series win over Australia. Haider Ali’s 103 runs in the Zimbabwe series have lifted him a whopping 639 places to 110th in the batting list.

Leg-spinner Usman Qadir, the son of Abdul Qadir, the famous leg-spinner of the 1980s and 1990s, has entered the rankings in 207th position after finishing as the most successful bowler in the series with eight wickets. Mohammad Hasnain (up 43 places to 81st), Wahab Riaz (up six places to 103rd) and Haris Rauf (up 51 places to 108th) have also made notable gains among the Pakistan bowlers.

Zimbabwe all-rounder Wesley Madhevere’s 103 runs in the series, which included an unbeaten 70 in the opening match, have lifted him 756 places to 163rd among batters while former captain Elton Chigumbura has gained one spot to retire at 96th position in the rankings. In the bowlers’ list, Tendai Chisoro has re-entered the rankings in 73rd position.

In the MRF Tyres ICC Men’s T20I Team Rankings, Pakistan have gained one point but remain in fourth position with 262 points. Australia (275 points), England (271) and India (266) hold the top three positions.
