Explosions rock at least three churches and two hotels in Sri Lanka, police say

More than 150 people were injured when explosions rocked at least three churches and two hotels in Sri Lanka on Sunday morning as Christians celebrated Easter, authorities said.

Sri Lankan police spokesperson Ruwan Gunasekera confirmed the explosions, some of which happened in the capital of Colombo. Most of those injured were taken to Colombo National Hospital, according to hospital officials.

There have been "many casualties including foreigners," tweeted Sri Lankan MP Harsha de Silva.

De Silva said two locations of the explosions were Kochchikade church and Shangri-la hotel in Kingsbury, Colombo.

"Horrible scenes, I saw many body parts strewn all over," De Silva said after visiting the scene. He said emergency crews are at the scenes operating in "full force."

Sri Lankan security personnel keep watch outside a church in Colombo after a blast Sunday.

De Silva said an emergency government meeting has been called, and rescue operations are underway.

Bombs kill 138 in Easter Day attacks on Sri Lankan churches, hotels

COLOMBO (Reuters) - Easter Day bomb blasts at three Sri Lankan churches and three luxury hotels killed 138 people and wounded more than 400, hospital and police officials said, following a lull in major attacks since the end of the civil war 10 years ago.

More than 50 people were killed in St. Sebastian’s gothic-style Catholic church in Katuwapitiya, north of Colombo, a police official told Reuters, with pictures showing bodies on the ground, blood on the pews and a destroyed roof.

Media reported 25 people were also killed in an attack on an evangelical church in Batticaloa in Eastern Province.

The three hotels hit were the Shangri-La Colombo, Kingsbury Hotel in Colombo and the Cinnamon Grand Colombo. It was unclear whether there were any casualties in the hotels.

Nine foreigners were among the dead, the officials said.

There were no immediate claims of responsibility for the attacks in a country which was at war for decades with Tamil separatists until 2009 during which bomb blasts in the capital were common.

Christian groups say they have faced increasing intimidation from some extremist Buddhist monks in recent years. And last year, there were clashes between the majority Sinhalese Buddhist community and minority Muslims, with some hardline Buddhist groups accusing Muslims of forcing people to convert to Islam.

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe called a national security council meeting at his home for later in the day.

“I strongly condemn the cowardly attacks on our people today. I call upon all Sri Lankans during this tragic time to remain united and strong,” he said in a Tweet.

“Please avoid propagating unverified reports and speculation. The government is taking immediate steps to contain this situation.”

President Maithripala Sirisena said he had ordered the police special task force and military to investigate who was behind the attacks and their agenda.

The military had been deployed, according to a military spokesman, and security stepped up at Colombo’s international airport.

ATTACKS ON CHRISTIANS

One of the explosions was at St Anthony’s Shrine, a Catholic Church in Kochcikade, Colombo, which is a tourist landmark.

St. Sebastian’s posted pictures of destruction inside the church on its Facebook page, showing blood on pews and the floor, and requested help from the public.

Last year, there were 86 verified incidents of discrimination, threats and violence against Christians, according to the National Christian Evangelical Alliance of Sri Lanka (NCEASL), which represents more than 200 churches and other Christian organizations.

This year, the NCEASL recorded 26 such incidents, including one in which Buddhist monks allegedly attempted to disrupt a Sunday worship service, with the last one reported on March 25.

Out of Sri Lanka’s total population of around 22 million, 70 percent are Buddhist, 12.6 percent Hindu, 9.7 percent Muslim and 7.6 percent Christian, according to the country’s 2012 census.

In its 2018 report on Sri Lanka’s human rights, the U.S. State Department noted that some Christian groups and churches reported they had been pressured to end worship meetings after authorities classified them as “unauthorized gatherings”.

The report also said Buddhist monks regularly tried to close down Christian and Muslim places of worship, citing unidentified sources.

Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith, the archbishop of Colombo, told local TV that the public should remain calm and asked authorities to bring those responsible for the attacks before the law. He also requested the public donate blood for the injured.

Education Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam announced that all schools would be closed on Monday and Tuesday.

Christians celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ on Easter Day after his death on the cross.

This is absolutely shocking.
RIP to all the victims.

Waiting for our Christian Lankan friends who are there on holiday to contact us...

7 or 8 bombs in different sites must take some organising.

Must be some local group. Don't think IS would target so many places. What have people become?
So many innocent people have lost their lives today. Rip.

What horrific and tragic news, this is all we need on on Easter Sunday!

What is this world coming to!?

This is what BBC is reporting:

In the years since the end of Sri Lanka's civil war in 2009, there has been some sporadic violence, with members of the majority Buddhist Sinhala community attacking mosques and Muslim-owned properties. That led to a state of emergency being declared in March 2018.

The civil war ended with the defeat of the Tamil Tigers, who had fought for 26 years for an independent homeland for the minority ethnic Tamils. The war is thought to have killed between 70,000 and 80,000 people.

Really sad news to hear and my prayers go out that the death toll does not rise much further.

Extremely disturbing and sickening attack by barbarians to target peaceful worshipers. People of Sri Lanka saw so much violence and finally got much needed peace but now this :(

Condolences to people of Sri Lanka.

What on earth is going on?

Horrible. Worshippers on their most holy day.

The decent people of the world must not let those who seek to divide us win.

The peddlers of poison and hate across religions must be contained across the world. And that can only happen when people reject them, stop giving them legitimacy, and bring them to face the full force of the law.

May the souls of the innocents who perished get everlasting peace. May their memories spur us to to stop legitimizing extremism in its political form and ensure that it is consigned to the dustbins of history through the route of prisons.

I am heart broken by this tragedy.. RIP to the victims, what is this world coming to, I despise the fact I am part of the human race, the worst species ever to come to life..... Is it the Tamil Tigers that did this?

No one knows yet. Lots of symbolism to this move though. A lot of ISIS stuff is doing things that is meant to encourage hostility between the religions. Speculating at the moment

who is behind this, why is it only certains groups are invloved in majority of these incidents. What is this ideology and which religion would encourage this violence.

WOKe up to a terrible news. Hitting people on Easter Sunday shows someone does not like Christians.

Hope the culprits are caught and given the strictest punishment.

Man these Indian media outlets are on par with the terrorist **** who perpetrated this massacre.

Here is some speculation by WhenSultansBowled

Is there a relation between the people who did the Pulwana attack and the Sri Lanka attack?

Are these terrorists funded by people who are continuously pushing the Nazi-level hate agenda against millions of Muslims in subcontinent?

Time shall reveal it all.

Sri Lanka attacks: More than 200 killed as churches and hotels targeted

At least 207 people have been killed and 450 hurt in explosions at churches and hotels in Sri Lanka, police say.

Eight blasts were reported, including at three churches in Negombo, Batticaloa and Colombo's Kochchikade district during Easter services.

The Shangri-La, Kingsbury and Cinnamon Grand hotels and one other, all in the capital, were also targeted.

A national curfew has been put in place "until further notice" and social media networks have been temporarily blocked.

A foreign ministry official has said at least 27 foreign nationals are among the dead.

Reports say seven people have been arrested, but it not yet clear who is responsible for the attacks.

Sri Lanka's defence minister has said the attacks were probably carried out by one group.
What's the latest from the scene?

The first reports of explosions came at about 08:45 (03:15 GMT) local time - with six blasts reported close together at churches and luxury hotels.

St Sebastian's church in Negombo was severely damaged in one explosion, with dozens killed at the site.

Images from inside showed blood on the pews and the building's ceiling shattered.

There were also heavy casualties at the site of the first blast in St Anthony's, a hugely popular shrine in Kochchikade, a district of Colombo.

Robert Tyler, who has lived in Sri Lanka for six years, told the BBC that at least two of the hotels appeared to have had their restaurants targeted at a busy time for breakfast.

A seventh explosion later hit near the zoo in Dehiwala, southern Colombo, and an eighth explosion was reported near the Colombo district of Dematagoda.

Media say it was suicide bomber and that three people, believed to be security personnel, were killed during a police raid.

Security has been stepped up at the country's main Bandaranaike International Airport.

Officials have said people will be able to travel to the airport under the curfew if they produce their boarding pass and identification at checkpoints.

Travellers are being advised to arrive at the airport four hours before their scheduled flight time.
Who are the victims?

The vast majority of those killed are thought to be Sri Lankan nationals, including dozens who were attending Easter church services.

At least five British people - including two with joint US citizenship - are believed to be among the dead.

Netherlands Foreign Minister Stef Blok confirmed in a statement that one Dutch national had been killed.

Two Turkish citizens have also been killed, state news agency Anadolu reports.

Colombo resident Usman Ali told the BBC there were massive queues as he joined people trying to donate blood.

He said: "Everyone had just one intention and that was to help the victims of the blast, no matter what religion or race they may be. Each person was helping another out in filling forms."

No-one was expecting this

BBC Sinhala's Azzam Ameen at St Anthony's

Rumours have been reported of more attacks and police have told people to stay inside their houses and remain calm. But there is some element of panic.

There is a heavy military presence in front of all major state buildings. No-one was expecting this, it was a peaceful Sunday morning - everyone was going to Easter services.

I've spoken to several priests who were in the church and they were really shocked, as were the police officers.

It was a well-planned, co-ordinated attack but I spoke to the security chief who was there and officials believe it's too early to say who is behind it.

After the Tamil Tigers were defeated in 2009, Sri Lanka hasn't really seen this kind of incident.
What have officials said?

President Maithripala Sirisena has issued a statement calling for people to remain calm and support the authorities in their investigations.

PM Ranil Wickremesinghe has condemned what he described as "cowardly attacks".

"I call upon all Sri Lankans during this tragic time to remain united and strong," he said.

Pope Francis, in his traditional Urbi et Orbi speech at the Vatican, condemned the attacks as "such cruel violence" targeting Christians celebrating Easter.

Cardinal Archbishop of Colombo, Malcolm Ranjith, told the BBC: "It's a very difficult and a very sad situation for all of us because we never expected such a thing to happen and especially on Easter Sunday."

UK PM Theresa May tweeted condolences, saying the "acts of violence against churches and hotels in Sri Lanka are truly appalling".

US President Donald Trump tweeted "heartfelt condolences" for the "horrible terrorist attacks".

What's Sri Lanka's recent history?

Sunday's attacks are the deadliest seen in Sri Lanka since the end of the country's civil war in 2009.

The civil war ended with the defeat of the Tamil Tigers, who had fought for 26 years for an independent homeland for the minority ethnic Tamils. The war is thought to have killed between 70,000 and 80,000 people.

The nation has seen some sporadic violence since. In March 2018 a state of emergency was declared after members of the majority Buddhist Sinhala community attacked mosques and Muslim-owned properties.

Religion in Sri Lanka

Theravada Buddhism is Sri Lanka's biggest religious group, making up about 70.2% of the population, according to the most recent census.

It is the religion of Sri Lanka's Sinhalese majority. It is given primary place in the country's laws and is singled out in the constitution.

Hindus and Muslims make up 12.6% and 9.7% of the population respectively.

Sri Lanka is also home to about 1.5 million Christians, according to the 2012 census, the vast majority of them Roman Catholic.

I lose brain cells by reading your posts.

Indian media is typically biased in favor of Muslims. Even when the perpetrators are Muslim, they often put pictures of Hindu rituals and anonymize the names by using Hindu ones.

RSS is nothing outside of Maharastra, Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh. RSS brings in a sect of Hinduism and enforces on rest of the Hinduism. So in Tamil Nadu for example, you'll get beat up up if you are an RSS. This is an ISIS inspired attack. There isn't even a tension between Muslims and other religions in Sri Lanka. Looks like ISIS wanted to deliver a message on the holy day and picked a weakspot.

Suggest dont get personal with each other or there will be bans.

Indian medias are unprofessional anyway. All the dummies that couldn't get into business/medicine/IT end up going to journalism. But this is very much an ISIS inspire attack. All the suspects getting arrested seems to be muslims. One of the attacker checked into the hotel under muslim name. Tamil Tigers are pretty much done case and they are secular they don't attack churches.

ISIS is long gone now... what do they have to gain from this?

This is politically motivated .... former ISIS, Alqaeda, whatever are just mercs for hire and do this for whoever pays them..

You just have to think who benefits from this in the end and you will figure out who is responsible!

There is a lot of tension between Sinhalese and Muslims. Sinhalese are the majority and after tamils, their next target is muslims. In last few years, many mosques have been attacked in Srilanks with numerous muslim victims. Looks like someone wanted to intensify this divide.

Sinhalese are Buddhist and not christians. Simply does not make sense to attack churches :s

In my opinion people DO reject extremists and don't give these type of atrocities legitimacy, but there will always be some who will go to the dark side, we shouldn't go down the route of labelling any one community as wholesale sympathisers or enablers. Unfortunately as we saw with the New Zealand mosque slaughter, even one man can inflict terrible damage.

This is very odd.

If Muslims were behind this attack - say ISIS then the Sri Lankan government would already have made it public. I have never heard about muslim jihadists in Sri Lanka.. This is a huge attack and too sophisticated/coordinated to be the work of a few religious fanatics.

It's the first attack after 2009 (the end of LTTE). Sri lanka hasn't been a target of "Islamic" terrorism.

Sri Lankan Muslims have joined ISIS in the past. All it takes is one or a small number of these fanatics to cause such a huge amount of destruction and loss of human life.

Tragic, really terrible so many people have lost their lives.

Looks like state sponsered terrorism, too sophisticated to be a group. We all know one nation which backed terrorists in Sri Lanka.

Lol... everything is a conspiracy theory..
And It is always someone else (someone being West, Zionist, Western Media , Trump etc )

Skip to 1:05 already another country had provided intelligence and warned about this particular attack. SL didn't take it serious assuming it didn't make sense.
