Deccan Gladiators seal final's spot for fourth time on the trot in Abu Dhabi T10 tournament

Deccan Gladiators humbled Morrisville Samp Army who have had an impeccable run in the round-robin stage in Qualifier 1 of 2024 Abu Dhabi T10 tournament at Zayed Cricket Stadium. With this thumping win, two-time champions Gladiators sealed a spot the final for fourth consecutive time and fifth overall.

Riding on some spectacular batting from their captain and West Indies player Nicholas Pooran along with England's Tom Kohler-Cadmore, Gladiators posted a mammoth 147/2 in 10 overs. Pooran remained unbeaten at 72 off 33, a knock that included 5 maximums and 4 fours.

Kohler-Cadmore on the other hand, notched up a half-century before he was eventually dismissed for 51 off 24.

Morrisville Samp Army then started off the chase in a positive manner as they collected 13 runs in the very first over but Gladiators' bowling unit quickly made a comeback as England pacer Richard Gleeson sent Charith Asalanka back in the hut for just 1 run in second over. This was followed by fall of wickets at regular intervals and Samp Army was pushed on the backfoot to eventually get restricted to 102/5.

Jack Taylor top-scored with 25* off 14 while wicket-keeper batter Andries Gous scored 22 off 14 and South Africa's star batter Faf dul Plessis struck 21 off 10.

For Gladiators, Usman Tariq, Gleeson and David Wiese were among the wickets. Tariq returned with bowling figures of 2/19 in 2 overs and played a major role in keeping a check on opponents' scoring rate. Gleeson and Wiese picked up one wicket each for the side.

Morrisville Samp Army are still not out of the competition as they will now take on winner of Eliminator 2 in Qualifier 2. Deccan Gladiators will lock horns with the winner of Qualifier 2 in the title clash on December 2, 2024.

VICTORIA GO TOP WITH SECOND WIN

Another closely fought match in the ExxonMobil Guyana Global Super League (GSL) in the first of Sunday’s double header of fixtures saw Victoria overcome Rangpur Riders by a margin of 10 runs in Providence.

After losing their first match the Riders were looking to get their points tally moving but they came up against a slick looking Australian outfit who were full of confidence after their own winning start to the tournament.

Nural Hasan won the toss for Riders and elected to field first, he may well have been regretting the decision when glancing at the scoreboard in the ninth over and seeing the opposition cruising at 70-0 with both Victoria openers timing the ball and finding the gaps.

Blake McDonald was the first to fall for a well-made 40 off 29 deliveries and the old adage of ‘one bringing two’ saw fellow opener Joe Clarke succumb in the next over for 32. Mahedi Hasan and Rishad Hossain were the pick of the bowlers for Riders and after the strong start regular wickets saw Victoria pegged back. A score of 151-6 meant that Riders were still in the game if they could build some partnerships of their own with the bat.

Soumya Sarkar was the glue that held Riders chase together, the Bangladeshi southpaw struck an impressive half century with 51 off 42 deliveries from the top of the order but when he fell as one of player of the match Callum Stow’s three wickets in the game, the Riders had it all to do at 108-4 with a little over five overs left.

Rishad Hossain kept the Riders hopes burning in the 18th over with a well struck and timely six dispatched off Max Birthisel but Dominc Drakes and Corey Anderson shut up shop for Victoria in the final two overs to see Victoria run out winners.

Victoria now look the team to beat in the GSL and sit top of the table on four points with two wins in two. The standings don’t look so pretty for Rangpur Riders who are rooted to the bottom of the table without any points from their first two fixtures.

Tom Banton's fiery knocks keeps Delhi Bulls in the hunt for Abu Dhabi T10 Final

1st December 2024: England international Tom Banton was the star of the show for Delhi Bulls as the franchise made their way to the second Qualifier in 2024 Abu Dhabi T10, league's eighth edition, with back-to-back wins on Sunday at Zayed Cricket Stadium. The right-handed batter played an unbelievable knock of 73 runs off 26 balls against Team Abu Dhabi in the second Eliminator, scoring a whopping 9 sixes in his innings.

With a late fireworks from skipper Rovman Powell, who hammered an unbeaten 20 runs in 6 balls, Delhi posted the season's highest total - 158/3 in 10 overs, to set up a steep chase for the opposition.

In response, the asking rate proved to be too much for Abu Dhabi, and despite keeping wickets in hand, the home side struggled to get going. Delhi bowling attack featuring Pakistan internationals Fazalhaq Farooqi and Salman Irshad kept a tight leash on Jonny Bairstow, not allowing the England international to break through the shackles.

Despite South African domestic cricketer Leus du Plooy adding quickfire 32 off 12 balls, Team Abu Dhabi were restricted to 116/7 and bowed of the tournament losing the match by 42 runs.

Earlier, Bulls defeated UP Nawabs in the first Eliminator to prolong their stay in the competition, with another memorable knock from Banton and a classy bowling performance from the side. The bowling attack Led by UAE's Muhammad Rohid, and Farooqi restricted the Nawabs to 99/7 in 10 overs.

In the chase, opener Banton led from the front, scoring an unbeaten 50 off 22 balls to take his side home in just 7.1 overs. With a 8-wicket win, Delhi Bulls ousted UP Nawabs from the tournament.

Morrisville Samp Army book a date with Deccan Gladiators in the Final

*2nd December 2024:* Morrisville Samp Army sealed a spot in the final to face off against the Deccan Gladiators once again in 2024 Abu Dhabi T10, the league's eighth edition, at Zayed Cricket Stadium. Chasing a total of 90, USA international Andries Gous faced the heat from Delhi Bulls bowling attack but stuck to the end to set up the win for his side, playing a crucial 38-run knock. The right-handed batter kept going despite wickets tumbling on the other end, and ensured he remained his composure after being struck on the helmet by Pakistan speedster Salman Irshad.

But the game turned around with Irshad picking up two consecutive wickets of Gous and Karim Janat, and suddenly, Samp Army found themselves in a tough spot, needing 30 runs to win in 3 overs with just 5 wickets.

England's Jack Taylor and Pakistan's veteran batter Imad Wasim ensured they keep the scoreboard ticking along. After settling themselves with a few deliveries, the two players started dealing in boundaries, and finished off the chase in style with three balls to spare. Taylor's 23* off 11 balls were enough to take Morrisville through to the final as they won the match by 5 wickets.

Earlier, Delhi Bulls were rocked by a tremendous bowling performance from Samp Army as Sri Lankan international Isuru Udana and Afghanistan spinner Amir Hamza combined to dismantle the Bulls' solid batting line-up. While Udana picked up three wickets for 17 runs in his 2 overs, Hamza picked up 2 wickets for 22 runs. The left-arm pacer was also named the man of the match for his efforts.
