Pooran’s shower of sixes help Northern Warriors drown Bangla Tigers
Northern Warriors post the second highest score in Abu Dhabi T10 as Bangla Tigers fail to reach the target despite Andre Fletchers 53 and Chirag Suri’s unbeaten 42

Nicholas Pooran’s power-packed innings of 89 off just 26 balls with 12 sixes and three boundaries helped Northern Warriors post the second-highest score of 162 for 4 in the Abu Dhabi T10 to outplay Bangla Tigers. It was a shower of sixes from Pooran in the 11th match of the Alubond Abu Dhabi T10 at the Abu Dhabi Zayed Cricket Stadium. At one stage it looked like Pooran was giving a lesson on power-hitting.

Bangla Tigers chased bravely through their skipper Andre Fletcher who hit 53 runs off 28 balls with four boundaries and four sixes. He was well backed by UAE’s Chirag Suri who hit an unbeaten 42 off 16 balls with five sixes, but they fell short of the target by 30 runs.

Bangla Tigers won the toss and put Northern Warriors into bat. Northern Warriors got off to a quick start picking 17 runs off the first over with opener Waseem Muhammad hitting two sixes off Mohammad Irfan. In the second over, Mujeeb Ur Rehman had Waseem out for 12 getting him caught at long-on.

Then Nicholas Pooran walked in and began hitting right away. He hit George Garton for a six and Simmons too hit a six to pick 16 runs off that over.

Qais Ahmed, who bowled the fourth over, was hit for 23 runs. It included Pooran’s three sixes and one boundary. Though Simmons hit Karim Janat for a six, only 13 runs came off that over. The sixth over saw Pooran in full flow hitting Mohammad Irfan for three successive sixes. Pooran raced to his half-century in the seventh over off 17 balls.

When Garton was re-introduced in the eighth over, Pooran hit him for four successive sixes and two boundaries to take 32 runs off that over. Karim Janat removed Lendl Simmons by having him caught at long-off for 41. He also ended Pooran’s knock by having him caught by Andre Fletcher at extra cover off the next ball. That over yielded just five runs. In the last over from Qais Ahmed, Rovman Powell hit a boundary and a six to remain unbeaten on 13.

Chasing the mammoth score of 162, Pakistan pacer Wahab Riaz struck a huge blow when he clean bowled Johnson Charles for a duck with the third ball. In the second over, Andre Fletcher hit Junaid Siddiqui for a boundary and a six. Afif Hossain too picked his first boundary in that over. Fletcher began to stroke freely hitting Riaz for two successive boundaries. In the fourth over, Fletcher became more aggressive hitting Ryan Emrit for two successive sixes. Fabian Allen had Hossain caught by Powell at deep mid-wicket. UAE’s Chirag Suri joined Fletcher and at halfway, Bangla Tigers need another 113 runs from the last 30 balls.

Wayne Parnell, who took a hat-trick in his last match, bowled the sixth over and gave away just seven runs. Suri lifted Allen for two consecutive sixes off the first and second deliveries of the eighth over. He also lifted the fourth delivery for another six to take 31 runs off that over.

Emrit was introduced again to bowl the ninth over. Fletcher lifted Emrit over long-on and reached his half-century in 22 balls. Bangla Tiger went past the 100 run mark through Suri’s elegant six over the point off Emrit. With 49 runs needed off the last six balls, Junaid Siddiqui trapped Fletcher leg before for 33 to end their chase. Suri remained unconquered with a quick 42.

Bangla Tigers opener and skipper Andre Fletcher showed the way for UAE’s Chirag Suri and Tom Moores to record an eight-wicket win over Pune Devils in the first match of the Super League in the Alubond Abu Dhabi T10 at the Abu Dhabi Zayed Cricket Stadium.

Fletcher hit a quick 30 runs off 15 balls to set the stage for the chase. The in-form Suri played another brilliant unbeaten knock of 30 off 15 balls while Tom Moores made it easy through a breezy unbeaten 38 off just 12 balls.

Pune had posted a challenging 115 for 3 through Tom Kohler-Cadmore’s elegant 48 runs and Alex Davies’s unbeaten 41. Bangla Tigers raced to the target with eight balls to spare.

Earlier, Bangla Tigers won the toss and elected to field. Pune Devils’ opener Cadmore, who hit an unbeaten 61 in his last match against Team Abu Dhabi, continued the same way. He began by hitting Mujeeb Ur Reman’s third delivery of the first over for a boundary through the off-side and then lifted the next one for a six over long-off.

Matheesha Pathirana, an eighteen-year-old medium pacer from Sri Lanka, did not give Cadmore or Kennar Lewis the liberty to hit boundaries. Cadmore made up for it in the third over from Mujeeb by hitting him for a six to long- off and a boundary through the covers to take 14 runs off that over.

Karim Janat, known for his ability to bowl tight overs, did just that and got the wicket of Lewis, caught at mid-off for 9. Cadmore could pick only one boundary in the fifth over from Qais Ahmad and at the halfway mark Pune were 55 for 1.

Next man Chadwick Walton, who joined Cadmore, lasted only four balls before hitting Fazalhaq Farooqi into the hands of Quaiz at long-on. Pune slipped into more trouble when Qais, who was introduced to bowl the seventh over, had Cadmore caught at deep square- leg for 48. This reduced Pune’s chances of posting a big total.

Next man Alex Davies hit Fazalhaq for a six over deep mid-wicket. Davies also hit George Garton, who bowled the ninth over, for a six and a boundary to steer Pune past the 100-run mark. In the last over from Janat, Davies picked one six and remained unbeaten on 41.

Chasing a run rate of 11.50 needed a steady start. Bangla Tigers’ started with their aggressive openers Johnson Charles and Andre Fletcher. Pakistan’s experienced left-arm pacer Mohammad Amir gave away only eight runs in his first over. The second over bowled by Bangladesh’s Monir Hossain too yielded only nine runs despite Charles hitting a six over mid-wicket. In the third over, Amir forced Charles to hit straight to mid-on, for 14. Amir gave away only six runs in that over. Chirag Suri, who had cracked an unbeaten 41 in his last match against Team Abu Dhabi, joined Fletcher. They picked 12 runs off the fourth over from Hardus Viljoen.

UAE skipper Ahmed Raza was introduced into the attack for the fifth over. His teammate and vice-captain Suri hit him for two consecutive boundaries and a six over long on. Bangla Tigers, at the half way mark, were 51 for 1 needing another 64 runs. Fletcher accelerated the run rate by hitting Karan for two consecutive sixes and a boundary but got run out off a direct hit from Kennar Lewis at the batsman’s end for 30.
Raza tightened the run flow giving away just seven runs in his seventh over.

Tom Moores made up for it in the eight over hitting Monir Hossain for three successive sixes and get 23 runs off that over. This tilted the match in Bangla Tigers way as they needed only 16 runs from the last 12 overs. Moores hit Viljoen for a boundary and a six. Suri helped his team reach the target by pulling Viljoen for a six.

Brief scores:

Bangla Tigers beat Pune Devils by eight wickets. Pune Devils 115 for 3 in 10 overs (Tom Kohler-Cadmore 48 Alex Davies 41 not out)

Bangla Tigers 119 for 2 in 8.5 overs (Andre Fletcher 30, Chirag Suri 30 not out, Tom Moores 38 not out)

Player of the match: Tom Moores

some shocking fielding standards in this tournament, players seem to be very relaxed in the field, looks like they are on holiday. Fielders changing clothes between deliveries, Rohan Mustafa the former UAE captain trying to stop a boundary with his top halfway over his head was comedy gold.

A lot of third grade cricketers in this tournament but even then there aren't as many Pakistani players involved as there should be. Why aren't the likes of Kamran Kamal, Ahmed Shehzad selected for these teams? If they can't even qualify for a tournament like this, how could they ever expect to be selected for Pakistan.

The Abu Dhabi T10 league has provided plenty of entertainment so far. From Nicholas Pooran's swashbuckling innings to Wayne Parnell's hat-trick, there has been a plethora of cricketing talent on display in the tournament. Monday's game between Team Abu Dhabi and Northern Warriors was no different, with the game going down to the very last delivery. However, the highlight of the match was a bizarre incident that has probably not been witnessed in the sport before. UAE international Rohan Mustafa, who plays for Abu Dhabi, was fielding at the boundary when Warriors batsman Waseem Muhammad hit the ball towards him.

However, Mustafa was changing his jersey, and despite running towards the ball, he only had half the shirt on and ended up conceding a boundary, leaving both opposition players and his teammates in splits.

Qalandars extended their winning streak in the Alubond Abu Dhabi T10 Super League through a four-wicket win over Maratha Arabians on the second day of the Abu Dhabi T10 Super League matches at the Abu Dhabi Zayed Cricket Stadium.

It was another strong allround performance from Qalandars who restricted Arabians to 101 for 5 in 10 overs despite Mohammad Hafeez’s 44 runs. Their accurate left-arm pacer Sohail Tanvir picked three wickets for 22 runs.

Chasing the target, Qalandars managed to maintain their run flow despite losing wickets at regular intervals. Through quick knocks from Sharjeel Khan (28), Sohail Akhtar (20) and Ben Dunk’s (26n.o), they sailed smoothly towards their target with 11 balls to spare.

Arabians opener Mohammad Hafeez began by picking two boundaries off Sultan Ahmed’s first over. The second over from experienced Pakistan bowler Sohail Tanvir was a tight one as usual and yielded just one boundary to Abdul Shakoor. In the third over, Sultan got his UAE teammate Shakoor caught at deep square leg by Asif Ali for 11.

Hafeez and Laurie Evans tried their best to force the run flow but managed only seven runs from Ahmed Daniyal’s over. Hafeez managed to hit Shahid Afridi for a boundary and a six to pick 14 runs off the over. At the half way mark, Arabians reached the 50 run mark.

Evans attempted a slog sweep off Daniyal and was bowled for 9. This brought in Shoaib Malik, who flicked the first ball he faced for a boundary. To tighten the fun flow, Qalandars introduced Chris Jordan and he gave away just five runs. Malik picked a boundary off Afridi who bowled the eighth over. Hafeez too hit Afridi for a boundary to get 14 runs off that over.

When Chris Jordan again bowled brilliantly giving away just eight runs in the ninth over, Arabians’ hopes of reaching the 100 run mark began to fade. Hafeez hit Tanvir’s first delivery of the last over for a six over mid-wicket and fell to the next ball getting caught by Sharjeel Khan at deep square leg for 44. Tanvir dismissed next man Mukhtar Ali for 4 and Malik for 23 with the fourth and fifth deliveries respectively. Mosaddek Hossain hit Tanvir’s last ball of the last over for a boundary through a reverse sweep to steer his team past the 100 run mark.

To contain Qaladar’s strong batting line up and defend a total of 101 for 5 wasn’t easy. Qalandars opener Tom Banton got run out off Sri Lankan leg spinner Kevin Koththigoda’s fifth ball of the first over in a terrible mix up with his partner Sharjeel Khan.
In the second over, Sharjeel played a fluent cover drive and also pulled Yamin Ahmadzai for two consecutive boundaries. In-form skipper Sohail Akhtar hit Mukhtar Ali for a six over long on and also flicked him for a boundary. Sharjeel hit Sompal Kami for two successive sixes in the fourth over. Akhtar too hit him for a six off the fifth delivery but got trapped leg before with the last ball of that over for 20. Shoaib Malik bowled a tight fifth over and also had Sharjeel caught at long-on for 28.

Qalandars needed 37 runs from the last five overs. Ben Dunk hit Mosaddek Hossain for two boundaries while Asif Ali too picked one boundary to get 15 runs off that over. Ishan Ali, who bowled the seventh over, had Asif caught at long off for 10 and gave away only seven runs.

With 15 runs needed off the last three overs, Arabians introduced Ahmadzai for the eighth over. He forced Afridi to edge to wicketkeeper Shakoor for 2. Next man Daniyal hit the first ball he faced for a straight six and got out to the next one top edging to short fine leg. Then Dunk hit the winning boundary off the first ball of the ninth over to easily reach their target.

Brief scores:
Qalandars beat Maratha Arabians by four wickets.
Maratha Arabians 101 for 5 in 20 overs (Mohammad Hafeez 44, Shoaib Malik 23, Sohail Tanvir 3 for 22) Qalandars 104 for 6 in 8.1 overs (Sharjeel Khan 28, Sohail Akhtar 20, Ben Dunk 26n.o, Yamin Ahmadzai 2 for 21)

Qalandars trap Bangla Tigers through accurate bowling for fifth consecutive win
Sohail Akthar’s unbeaten 49 runs and Ben Dunk’s 31 lift Qalandars to 104 for 3 and restrict Bangla Tigers to 97 for 6

Match Report
February 3, 2021
Abu Dhabi.

The mighty Qalandars extend their winning run by scuttling Bangla Tigers’ spirited show in the first match of the third day of the Super League in the Alubond Abu Dhabi T10 tournament at the Abu Dhabi Zayed Cricket Stadium. Qalandars recorded an exciting seven-runs win to register their fifth win in five matches.

Tigers did well to restrict Qalandars to 104 for 3 despite skipper Sohail Akhtar’s unbeaten 49 and Ben Dunk’s 31 runs. Tigers tried their best to pull off a victory but Sohail Tanvir and Mohammad Zahid with two wickets each, backed by Chris Jordan’s Ahmed Daniyal’s tight overs, upset their plans.

Earlier, Bangla Tigers won the toss and opted to field. Qalandars got off to a shocking start when their opener Tom Banton got bowled to George Garton’s fifth delivery for a duck. Garton ensured that it was a wicket-madien over too.

Sohail Akhtar hit two successive boundaries off Mujeeb Ur Rehman in the second over.

Opener Sharjeel Khan cut Garton past point for a boundary off this first ball of the third over but could get only eight runs in the over.

Tigers introduced Sri Lanka’s 18-year-old medium pacer Matheesha Pathirana, who wavered in his length, and Akhtar smashed him for two consecutive boundaries to take 18 runs off that over. Akthar was severe on Mujeeb Ur Rehman too by hitting him also for two consecutive boundaries. At the half way mark, Qalandars were 49 for 1.

Sharjeel flicked Karim Janat’s first delivery of the sixth over for a six. In the same over, Janat had Sharjeel caught by Andre Fletcher at mid-off for 15. Akhtar continued his big hits by lifting Fazal Farooqi for a six over long on. Ben Dunk too picked a boundary to take 13 runs off that over. Still runs did not flow freely like Qalandars would have wanted. Qaiz Ahmed bowled a tight eighth over giving away just seven runs.

In the ninth over Dunk hit Farooqi for two sixes and a boundary to take 19 runs off that over. Qais was introduced for the 10th over and once again he bowled a brilliant over giving away only five runs and taking the wicket of Dunk. He forced Dunk to hit high to Matheesha Pathirana at deep extra cover for 31 off the last ball. Akhtar remained unbeaten just one run short of his half century but his 49 runs partnership with Dunk helped Qalandars go past the 100-run mark.

Chasing the target of 105 runs, Tigers opener Johnson Charles hit Sultan Ahmed for three consecutive boundaries in the first over. Sohail Tanvir forced Charles to top edge him to Banton at mid-off for 12 in the second over. He gave away just two runs in that over. Opener and captain Andre Fletcher too departed in the third over from Ahmed Daniyal by edging to Shahid Afridi at short third man for 2. Daniyal too gave away just five runs.

Chirag Suri and Tom Moores tried their best to accelerate the run rate. Suri had hit Daniyal for a boundary in the third over while Moores hit Afridi for a six and a boundary. They picked 14 runs off Afridi’s fourth over. Daniyal again bowled a tight fifth over giving away just seven runs resulting in Tigers needing another 65 runs in the last five overs.

Suri cracked a fluent cover drive off Mohammad Zahid’s second delivery off the sixth over. He also flicked him for another boundary. With the third ball Zahid had Suri edge to wicketkeeper Dunk for 16.

Next man Karim Janat hit Zahid for a six over mid-wicket. Chris Jordan, who was introduced for the seventh over, made it tougher for the Tigers yielding just nine runs. Tanvir had Janat caught and bowled for 12 in the eighth over. Moores hit Tanvir for two sixes and a boundary to lit up hopes of a victory.

With 23 runs needed off the last 12 overs, the accurate Jordan clean bowled next man Afif Hossain with the first ball for a duck and yielded just two runs. Qalandars introduced Mohammad Zahid again with 21 runs needed off the last six balls. He trapped Moores leg before with the first ball. Qais hit the next ball for a boundary and followed it up with a six too. Zahid gave away just one run off the last two balls to stop Tigers from reaching the target.

Deccan Gladiators have been fined for maintaining a slow over rate during their loss to the Northern Warriors in the Alubond Abu Dhabi T10 on February 2. Match Referee, Chris Broad, imposed the sanction after Kieron Pollard’s side was ruled to be three overs short of the target after time allowances were taken into consideration.

In accordance with Article 2.22 of the ADT10 Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel (which relates to minimum over-rate offences), for the first offence by the team in a season the captain is fined 20 per cent and every other member of the playing XI are fined 10 per cent of their match fees.

Pollard accepted the offense and the proposed sanction, so there was no need for a formal hearing. On-field umpires Lyndon Hannibal and Paul Baldwin, TV umpire Nigel Llong and fourth umpire Shiju Mannil leveled the charge.

Defending champions Maratha Arabians bowed out of the Alubond Abu Dhabi T10 tournament at the Abu Dhabi Zayed Cricket Stadium with another shoddy batting performance. They crashed to a 29-runs defeat to Deccan Gladiators in the first match of the fourth day of the Super League.

Anwar Ali’s blazing cameo of an unbeaten 39 off 12 balls with two sixes and six boundaries helped Gladiators post a total of 120 for 4. In reply, Arabians could muster only 91 for 3 despite their skipper Mosaddek Hossain’s unbeaten 44.

For Gladiators, who too have had a poor tournament, it was a consolation win despite resting their star players. South African veteran leg spinner Imran Tahir captained the team.

Arabians won the toss and elected to field. Gladiators lost their opener Azam Khan to the last ball of the first over from India’s veteran spinner Pravin Tambe. He made Azam slog him to Sompal Kami at deep mid-wicket for 4.

Opener Prashant Gupta began by hitting Ishan Malhotra for a six and then went on to pick two consecutive boundaries. His partner, UAE’s Yasir Kaleem, too picked a boundary to the point fence. Kaleem also lifted Tambe’s first delivery of the third over for a six over long on.

Gupta, who had played Ranji Trophy for Uttar Pradesh, hit Muktar Ali for a six and two consecutive boundaries. UAE’s 16-year-old Maroof Merchant got hit for two sixes by Kaleem. At the half way mark, Gladiators were 67 for 1.

Gupta fell to the fourth ball of the sixth over from Sompal Kami getting caught at long on for 25. Kami ended Kaleem’s knock of 28 with the last ball of that over. Kaleem got caught by Alishan Sharafu at deep midwicket. Kami gave away just only two runs in that over to take the two wickets.

Sohag Gazi gave away only seven runs from the seventh over but Anwar Ali hit the first two deliveries of the eighth over from Kami for boundaries.

Gazi had Cameron Delport stumped by wicketkeeper Abdul Shakoor for 6 in the ninth over. Zeeshan Zameer and Anwar Ali picked one boundary each. Ali then hit Malhotra for three boundaries and two sixes to take 25 runs off the 10th over.

Chasing the target, Arabians opener Abdul Shakoor got only one boundary off Imtiaz Ahmed, who bowled three wides in the first over. The second over from Aaron Summers was accurate and gave away only six runs. Opener Malhotra hit two consecutive boundaries off Imtiaz’s third over to take 12 runs. Imran Tahir introduced himself and bowled Shakoor for 9 with a googly. When Pakistan’s 18-year-old pacer Zeeshan Zameer had Shoaib Malik caught at long on for 1 in the fifth over giving away only five runs, the asking rate began to shoot up. Arabians needed 89 runs from the last five overs.

Gladiators introduced UAE’s Zahoor Khan for the sixth over and as usual he bowled tightly giving just one boundary to Mosaddek Hossain. In the seventh over, Malhotra hit the first ball for a boundary while Hossain hit a six, to get 14 run off that over. However, Arabians still needed 68 runs off the last 18 balls. Hossain hit Tahir for two successive boundaries and also earned a four rus bye. He also hit the fourth ball for a six to take 21 runs off the over.

With 46 runs needed from the last two overs, Summers had Malhotra brilliantly caught by Zahoor Khan at short fine leg for 22. He prevented the batsmen from going for any big hits in the over giving away just seven runs. With 39 runs needed off the last six balls, Zahoor Khan continued to bowl tight and ensured his team their second win. Hossain remained unbeaten on 44 but his team fell short by 29 runs.
