Northern Warriors defeat Delhi Bulls by 8 wickets to win the 2020 Abu Dhabi T10 League

Through a spirited show, Delhi Bulls snapped Qalandars’ winning streak in the Alubond Abu Dhabi T10 tournament at the Abu Dhabi Zayed Cricket Stadium. Bulls restricted Qalandars’ formidable batting to 107 for 6 and raced to a morale boosting nine-wicket win with 16 balls to spare in the second match of the fourth day of the Super League.

Opener Evin Lewis cracked an unbeaten 48 off just 18 balls with five sixes and three boundaries. Ravi Bopara remained unconquered on 37 off 15 balls with two sixes and five boundaries. Bulls will now take on Northern Warriors in the first qualifier.

Bulls won the toss and followed the trend of opting to field. Qalandars’ opener Sharjeel Khan began by hitting Waqas Maqsood elegantly through the covers for a boundary. Maqsood bowled the rest of the deliveries tightly.

Sharjeel escaped being caught at his score on 5 when Lewis at mid-wicket dropped him off Fidel Edwards. The drop did not prove costly as Edwards clean bowled Sharjeel for 7 with the fifth ball of that over. Skipper Sohail Akhthar and opener Tom Banton picked one boundary each off Maqsood’s third over.

Dwayne Bravo struck with the fourth ball of the fourth over by forcing Akhtar to top edge to wicketkeeper Rahmanullah Gurbaz for 14. In the fifth over, Shiraz Ahmed produced a brilliant yorker to clean bowl Ben Dunk for 1. At the half way mark Qalandars were 47 for 3.

Nyeem Young, a 20-year-old pacer from Barbados gave away eight runs in the sixth over. Banton hit Bravo for two consective boundaries but he got run out off the last delivery. Young produced a direct throw to the bowler’s end to end Banton’s knock of 26 runs. Young then went on to dismiss Ahmed Daniyal, caught at backward point, for 7. The accurate Shiraz was introduced for the ninth over and he gave away only a boundary to Chris Jordan. Edwards, who bowled the tenth over, clean bowled Jordan with a full toss for 18. Next man Samit Patel pulled him for a boundary and also lifted him for a straight six. He hit the last delivery to the long off boundary and get 20 runs for his team off that over. Patil remained unconquered on 18 runs from five deliveries.

Chasing the target, Bulls’ openers Gurbaz and Lewis could get only one run each from Sohail Tanvir’s first over. Gurbaz lifted UAE left-arm spinner Sultan Ahmed for a six to long-on and a boundary to mid-off. He also picked another straight six to take 16 runs off that over.

Lewis smashed the first delivery of the third over for a boundary to long off and pulled the next one for a six. The third delivery was also hit effortlessly for a six. He was beaten by the fourth ball, but luckily the inside edge fetched Lewis another boundary. With the fifth ball Daniyal trapped Gurbaz leg before for 17, but the over ended with Bulls getting 23 runs.
Ravi Bopara hit Jordan for a six to long-on to steer the team past the 50 run mark in 3.1 overs. Lewis did not spare the accurate Jordan too and hit him for a six to mid-off to take 16 runs off the over. Bopara sliced the first delivery from Mohammad Zahid past point for a boundary. At the half way mark, Bulls needed only 34 more runs.

Daniyal bowled a splendid sixth over, though Lewis pulled the last ball of that over for a six. Bopara hit the first ball of the seventh over from Zahid for a boundary and followed up with a six to mid-wicket. He also smashed him for two more consecutive boundaries. When Lewis also hit Zahid for a six, 25 runs came off that over.

Bopara smashed Patel through the covers to inflict the first defeat on Qalandars.

Delhi Bulls captain Dwayne Bravo, Waqas Maqsood and Nyeem Young destroyed the strong Northern Warriors batting to restrict them to 97 for 7 and place their team in the final of the Alubond Abu Dhabi T10 at the Abu Dhabi Zayed Cricket Stadium.

Bravo, who had captained Maratha Arabians to their title triumph in the last edition, took the prize wickets of Warriors skipper Nicholas Pooran and aggressive Lendl Simmons for figures of two wickets for 14. He was backed by Maqsood with two wickets for 24 runs and Nyeem Young with two wickets for 22 runs.

Chasing the moderate target, Sherfane Rutherford through a breezy 29 off 10 balls and Tom Abell’s 11-ball unbeaten 23 ensured Bulls a five-wicket win with eight balls to spare in the first qualifier.

Warrior’s UAE medium pacer Junaid Siddique bowled brilliantly to take four wickets for 20 runs but Abell and Ravi Bopara (15n.o) held on to steer their team safely to the target.

Delhi Bulls picked an early wicket after opting to bowl first. Waqas Maqsood with the second ball of the first over clean bowled Brandon King for 2. Pooran began in his usual style by going for the big shots right away. He hit the first three balls he faced from Maqsood for boundaries. Waseem Muhammad hit a boundary through covers off Fidel Edwards in the second over while Pooran hit the fifth and six deliveries of that over for sixes.

Maqsood struck again with the first ball of the second over by forcing Waseem to edge to wicketkeeper Rahmanullah Gurbaz for 5. Pooran hit Maqsood over the square leg for another six. Off the last ball of that over, Rovman Powell got run out for 1 to a direct hit by Sherfane Rutherford at backward point to the wicketkeeper’s end. Powell, who had remained unbeaten six times consecutively in this tournament thus got out for the first time.

Bravo then introduced himself and picked the prize wicket of Pooran by having him caught at long on by Tom Abell for 32 from just 12 deliveries. Bravo also bowled a tight fourth over giving away just six runs. The fifth over from Shiraz Ahmed was tighter giving away just three runs. At the half way, Warriors were struggling at 51 for 4.

Lendl Simmons hit the first ball of the sixth over from Young for a six to deep backward point. He also hit the second delivery to backward square leg for a boundary. Young trapped Fabian Allen leg before for 3 with his fourth delivery and half the Warriors side were back in dug-out for 62.

Simmons could get only one boundary from the accurate Shiraz in the seventh over. Bravo also removed the dangerous Simmons in the eighth over by having him caught at covers for 19. He then caught Wayne Parnell on 13 at long on off Young in the last over.
Dhananjaya Lakshan hit two consecutive scoop shot boundaries and Warriors innings ended three runs short of the 100 run mark.

Chasing the target, the aggressive Gurbaz hit Wahab Riaz’s second delivery of the first over to backward square leg for a six. He also hit the last delivery of the first over for a boundary In the second over, Lewis hit Junaid Siddique’s first delivery for a boundary. He also hit the second delivery for a six to long-on. Siddique struck back having Lewis caught at deep mid-wicket for 10 and also had Gurbaz caught at the same positon for 14. Rutherford began by lifting Wayne Parnell for a six over long-on. He repeated the same shot off the third ball to get another six. He went on to hit Parnell for two consecutive boundaries off the last two balls to take 23 runs off that over.

Rutherford then carved an upper cut off Siddique over backward point for a six. With the next ball, he trapped Rutherford leg before for 29. Siddique also trapped Mohammad Nabi leg before with the last ball of the fourth over. Rayad Emrit gave aways just three runs and at the half way mark, Bulls were 60 for 4 needing another 38 runs from the last five overs.

Bulls slipped into further trouble when Bravo hit Dhananjaya Lakshan straight to Allen at mid-wicket for 5. Abell joined Ravi Bopara, and together they took up the challenge. Abell first hit Parnell for a six to mid-wicket. He then hit Parnell for two consecutive boundaries to place Bulls close to the target. Bopara finished off in style by hitting Allen for a six over long-off to put his team in to the final. Abell hit an unbeaten 23 while Bopara remained unconquered on 15.

Najibullah Zadran’s breezy cameo of an unbeaten 45 runs off just 16 balls and opener Paul Stirling’s quick 26 runs from nine balls helped Team Abu Dhabi post an impressive 124 for 6 and down Qalandars by 21 runs in the third-place play-off in the Alubond Abu Dhabi T10 at the Abu Dhabi Zayed Cricket Stadium.

Chasing the target, Qalandars were restricted to 103 for 5. UAE off-spinner Rohan Mustafa bagged two wickets for 19 runs. He was well backed by some accurate bowling from all the other bowlers. It was a sad end for Qalandars who began with a bang through five consecutive victories.

Qalandars won the toss and elected to field. Leonardo Julien, a 19-year-old left-handed batsman from West Indies, opened the innings and picked a boundary off Sohail Tanvir’s third delivery of the first over to deep square leg. Opener Paul Stirling smashed Samit Patel for 24 runs in the second over. It included two sixes and three boundaries.

Ahmed Daniyal picked the wicket of Stirling with the second ball of the third over by forcing him to pull straight to Daniel Bell-Drummond at square leg for 26. Julien pulled Daniyal for a six and Abu Dhabi picked 11 runs off that over. Julien also picked a boundary off Mohammad Zahid in the fourth over but fell to the last ball of that over getting caught by Bell-Drummond at mid-wicket for 19.

Nepal batsman Kushal Malla hit Ali Khan for a straight six in the fifth over but Jamie Overton fell to the last ball of that over getting caught at long-on for 1. At the halfway mark, Abu Dhabi was 63 for 3.

Leg spinner Kurshid Anwar clean bowled Ben Duckett for 7 off the last ball of the sixth over. Zahid bowled an excellent seventh over giving away just four runs and also yorked Malla for 18.

Najibullah Zadran hit Patel for two consecutive boundaries in the eighth over. He also got another boundary when Anwar dropped him at deep extra cover, He then lifted Patel for a six to long-on to get 22 runs off the over. Patel thus gave away 46 runs from his two overs.

Tanvir forced skipper Luke Wright to edge to wicketkeeper Fayyaz Ahmed for a duck off the first ball of the ninth over. He gave away only four runs. Zadran hit Daniyal, who bowled the tenth over, for a six and a boundary off the second and fourth ball respectively. He also hit the last ball of the innings for a boundary to short third man and remain unbeaten on 45 and took 19 runs off that over to post an impressive total.

Qalandars began their chase through a new pair of openers in Bell Dunk and Bell-Drummond. Dunk swung the second delivery from Tom Helm for a boundary to mid-wicket. Overton almost caught Dunk at mid-wicket off the fourth ball but failed to hold on to it. It did not turn out to be a costly drop as Rohan Mustafa had Dunk caught by Wright at mid-off for the 13 in the second over. Bell-Drummond picked two boundaries off the last two deliveries from Mustafa and pick 15 runs off his over. He also picked two boundaries from Overton’s third over. UAE’s 20-year-old Karthik Meiyappan tied down Bell-Drummond and Akhtar with the first five deliveries.

However, Bell-Drummond pulled the last delivery for a six. Obed McCoy was introduced in the fifth over and Bell-Drummond smashed an upper cut for a six and also picked a boundary to mid-on. Bell-Drummond then lifted Meiyappan for a straight six and escaped being caught at short third man. However, in the same over, Meiyappan had him caught by Helm at deep mid-wicket for 46. With 57 runs needed off 24 balls, Akhtar pulled Overton for a six to mid-wicket but fell to the fifth delivery of that over getting caught by Duckett at deep cover for 17. Mustafa yorked Patel for a duck to get his second wicket and gave away just four runs to mount pressure on Qalandars.

When Qalandars needed 45 runs off the last 12 balls, they managed only four runs from the ninth over by McCoy. McCoy also got Ali Khan out for 5. In the last over, though Helm was hit for 19 runs by Tanvir and Daniyal, Qalandars fell short of the target by 21 runs.

Through disciplined bowling from Sri Lanka's promising players 20-year-old off-spinner Maheesh Theekshana and 22-year-old Dhananjaya Lakshan, backed by the accurate UAE medium-pacer Junaid Siddique, Northern Warriors restricted Delhi Bulls to a paltry 81 for 9 and emerged as the champions through an eight-wicket win in the final of the fourth edition of the Alubond Abu Dhabi T10 at the Abu Dhabi Zayed Cricket Stadium. Bulls’ batting choked in the crucial match and Warriors sailed to victory with 10 balls to spare through Waseem Muhammad’s 27 runs and Lendl Simmons and Rovman Powell remaining unbeaten with 14 and 16 runs respectively.

It was a spirited comeback by Warriors who had lost the qualifier to Bulls on Friday. They came back strongly to emerge as the champions for the second time after their 2018 edition triumph. In the 2018 edition too, they had lost in the qualifier and then gone on to lift the title for the first time.

Going into this final without their reputed pacers Wayne Parnell and Wahab Riaz, they played like brave Warriors. Sri Lankan youngsters Theekshana bagged three wickets for 13 while Lakshan took two wickets for 14. Siddiqui too chipped in with 2 for 19. Except for Mohammad Nabi who hit 21 runs, none of the other batsmen were allowed to play the big shots.

A determined Warriors won the toss and marched out to the field. Bulls’ opener Rahmanullah Gurbaz scored the first boundary of the final off the second ball from Rayad Emrit. Evin Lewis hit the last ball of the over for the first six of the match over backward square leg. They picked 16 runs off the first over.

UAE medium-pacer Junaid Siddique then had Gurbaz brilliant caught by his UAE teammate Waheed Ahmed at covers on a second attempt for 13. Off-spinner Maheesh Theekshana dismissed Lewis in the third over by having him brilliantly caught at mid-off by Rovman Powell for 10.

Bulls slipped into further trouble when Siddique in the fourth over had Sherfane Rutherford caught by Fabian Allen at long on for 4.

Mohammad Nabi hit Allen for a six in the fifth over. By the halfway mark, Bulls were 55 for 3, looking for some big hits for an impressive total. Nabi then hit the first ball from Dhananjaya Lakshan for a six over fine leg but perished to the next delivery when he got caught at short third man by Simmons for 21. Lakshan could have got Bopara’s wicket too in the next ball, but Brandon King at sweeper cover dropped him. Fortunately for Warriors, that drop did not prove too costly as Theekshana, with the first ball of the seventh over, had Bopara caught at long-on for 9. Two balls later, he trapped skipper Dwayne Bravo leg before for a duck. He gave away only five runs in that over.

Allen pushed Bulls into further trouble by having Tom Abell caught at deep extra cover by King for 7. He also gave away just four runs in the eighth over. Emrit tightened the noose further when he clean bowled Waqas Maqsood in the ninth over and gave away just three runs. Lakshan too gave away just three runs off the tenth over and also picked the wicket of Shiraz Ahmed.

Chasing the target, skipper Nicholas Pooran promoted himself as the opener and cracked a boundary through the covers off the second delivery of the first over from Waqas Maqsood. He also pulled Fidel Edwards for a boundary and a six. With the last ball of that over, Edwards trapped Pooran leg before for 12.

Opener Waseem Muhammad had a lucky escape in the third over when Bopara at extra cover dropped him off Maqsood. Lendl Simmons picked a boundary to third man in that over. Waseem hit the first ball of the third over from Edwards through the covers for a boundary and also drove the fifth ball to the mid-off boundary.

Waseem then swung his UAE teammate Shiraz Ahmed for a six to deep mid-wicket and also pulled him for another boundary. Warriors reached the 50-run mark in the fifth over They needed only 32 more runs from the last five overs.

Bravo introduced himself for the sixth over and gave away only six runs. Shiraz struck in the seventh over by forcing Waseem to hit Bravo at mid-off for 27. Next man Rovman Powell top-edged Bravo over the wicketkeeper to get a boundary.

With just ten runs needed off the last two overs, Nyeem Young gifted a five-runs wide and then Powell hooked the next delivery for a six to march off as the champions of the fourth edition of the Alubond Abu Dhabi T10 tournament.
