I remember the 2000 icc knockout throphy in Kenya.

I was very excited of the 'knockout' type format.

I rememeber some teams already made into the QF's were one team had to knockout another team in a previous round to make it to the QF, then SF, then final.

India vs Kenya and and the winner would play Australia in the QF.

Short and sweet quickies are what I like the most.

It was an amazing tournament.

Damn you Chris Cairns!!

India vs Kenya

Sri Lanka vs West Indies

England vs Bangladesh

Then to the QF's

All games played at same ground.

Knockout cricket has a real charm. No second chances. On the day stuff.

I'm sure Virat wouldn't mind it so he can improve his record in ICC knockout games in 50 overs cricket.

I don't think the TV broadcasters would like it in this day. ICC makes sure that any tournament run by them is India proof.

They have to make sure that India goes deep into any ICC tournament. This is the only way ICC can secure a large broadcasting deal. Not to mention that it has to be watchable in India at a somewhat reasonable time of the day.

It keeps Disney/Star Sports happy and at the same time fills the ICC coffers. Which of course gets individual boards $$$.

I thought it was cool I kinda wish they had 16 team T20 knockout style ICC tourney with that the team that wins would ensure to play round of 16 - quarter finals - Semi finals - and than finals so 4 games to be crown champion with no second chances

Yes they should have this format for the Champions Trophy and T20 World Cup.

They should have Asia Cup with a format like that. I am sure we can find atleast 8 asian teams and use that format. :inti

I have never liked knock out tournaments which are more of a lottery. You prepare, book tickets, reach the destination, practice and then you are can be out in just one game.

I am not even a fan of semi finals and finals in world cup either. A team plays consistent cricket throughout the tournament but few bad hours in a knockout game ends your entire campaign. Take the example of India in 2019 world cup, they played terrific cricket throughout the league stage and easily were the best team of the tournament. A few hours of poor cricket and its all over.

Thats why best teams don't often win world cups.

West Indies was the best team in 1983
Pakistan was the best team in 1987
South Africa was the best team in 1992
South Africa was the best team in 1999
India was the best team in 2019

None of them won the tournament.

My favourite format is the one premier league football adopts. Every team plays against each other twice and in the end team that tops the table, is the winner. Now thats how we crown a champion team...fair and square.

The day ICC adopts this format, it will do justice to the winner.

Knock out lotteries...Nah.

In FIFA WC, apart from round one all other rounds that follow till the finals are knock outs.

Round of 16 to Round of 8 ( Quarter Finals) to Round of 4 ( Semis) to the Final of the tournament.

This is the standard procedure and makes the tournament very exciting. Dont think this system can be replaced with the League Style system either in Football or Cricket WC.

I agree it is standard procedure and having semi finals and finals make it more exciting. Teams normally step up a gear and give it all and one team may just give it their absolute all like India in the first 5 overs of the 2011 wc final, how many times did Yuvi, Raina dive to save a boundary?

Bhaijaan, you are confusing leagues with tournaments. There is a reason South Africa haven't won any World Cup. :inti

You're comparing apples and oranges though. Leagues and tournaments are totally different.

If a team truly deserves to win the competition, they SHOULD be able to win their knockout games.

Personally, I'd love a playoffs style format where you play a best of 5 matches to determine the winner. It looks like Cricket has started going that way too with their Test championship recently introduced.

Every 3-4 years, based on rankings the top 4 teams play each other (1 vs 4, 2 vs 3) in a best of 5 matches to go to the finals. The final two play best of 5 to truly determine the winner.

But the WC does have its own charm where anything can happen in a knockout game but it doesn't really give an accurate assessment of who is truly the best. 2019 WC format was definitely the best IMO and it was probably the closest and most competitive WC.

Not really if a team actually deserves to win they should win majority matches, NBA AND NHL have much much better playoff formats where its best of 7.

VB series in Aus used to have that for finals as well.

1998 and 2000 tournaments had similar format.

I think that format was pretty fun. One bad game and you are eliminated.
