Dinesh Karthik retires from all formats of cricket [Post Updated #355]

England Men’s Elite Pace Bowling Coach Neil Killeen is set to lead the England Lions on their upcoming tour of India, beginning later this week. The month-long series will feature three four-day matches against India A in Ahmedabad.

Killeen will head up a coaching team that includes local knowledge and experience, to support the playing group's needs. Notable additions to the coaching staff include India international wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik, who will join the squad for nine days near the start of the tour. Former England internationals Ian Bell and Graeme Swann will also contribute their expertise and understanding of playing in India, working alongside England full-time coaches Richard Dawson and Carl Hopkinson.

England Men’s Performance Director, Mo Bobat, said:

“It’s great to have such a strong coaching group supporting our players for what should be an exciting challenge versus India A. The group has a deep and diverse set of experiences and expertise.

“Neil Killeen did an excellent job leading the Lions in Sri Lanka last year and will assume head coach responsibilities again.

“Similarly, Ian Bell and Graeme Swann have spent time around our Lions environments over the past year and will be well-placed to continue supporting the players, many of whom they already know well. They both bring fantastic experiences to their respective coaching and mentoring roles.

“Carl Hopkinson and Richard Dawson have extensive pathway experience and bring with them an England senior coaching perspective, and recent experience of Indian conditions.

“And it’s fantastic to have Dinesh Karthik with us for a part of our prep period and leading into the first Test. I’m sure the lads will love spending time with him and benefiting from his experience of what it takes to be successful at Test level in India.”

At 38 years of age, still displaying power hitting, he scored a valuable 38*(26) against CSK in IPL 2024. Hopefully, he will sign off with a trophy.

Karthik has the best of everything i.e. BCCI's official commentator for domestic and ICC events, an official commentator for most other foreign T-20 leagues around the world and gets to enjoy a lucrative IPL contract. He may not be an Indian cricketing legend but the man is way more financially well set in comparison to many of the Pakistani legends.

You are correct. He earned a significant amount, similar to other IPL big players. He was one of the high-priced players in the last decade, except for the last two years.

He has already announced his retirement; this is his final season. DK is a very nice and humble guy who is liked by everyone. Luck is also important in one's career, and he hasn't always been fortunate throughout his career.

thats because not only is he a very good team man, he is very humble and liked by everyone. I met him in one of the after-match dinners few years back and he was friendly, easy to get along and it was great to spend time with him. He puts in hard work, has maintained his fitness and can easily play test cricket if needed. His peak unfortunately coincided with that of Dhoni and honestly he may not have as good as Dhoni. But in most other era he would have been a long term Indian player. He will do well in just about any setup. Best of luck to him.

Dinesh Karthik speaking on a Sky Sports Podcast:

“You know I have had this conversation with both of you at different points in time during my last stint in the UK on how you decide when to retire; is there something called a niceswon? It is coming to an end. It has come to an end. I did bat well in a couple of games. I felt good, which was very surprising. It is not easy mixing, broadcasting, and playing. I played the DY Patil Tournament and felt abysmal in it."

"Unless you are Shahid Afridi (on retirement), but in most cases, once it's done, it's done. How I look at it is, once you finish, do I regret anything or am I missing anything? I have a couple of regrets. One missed the opportunity to be retained by the Mumbai Indians. I think I missed the opportunity; they were keen on me not playing for the Super Kings because I am from Chennai. They have always bid for me but could never get me. I wish I could turn the clock back and change things,"

"Leading a franchise is altogether a different job. There are many other cultures, and you will find it challenging to deal with other individuals. You can be very honest with them. As a leader, you will lose out on certain friendships," he said.

"During my time as KKR captain, Kuldeep (Yadav) was not doing as well as he is right now. There were tough conversations with him, and I don't think he would have appreciated me at that stage. I have to be tough with him."

"It was a hard time for Kuldeep. I think those tough times have made him a better bowler today. My bad luck is that I have to be a part of that bad phase in his life. I hope he understands what I did. I do not want him to appreciate it and be ok with it. You have to take decisions for the team and there was nothing personal,"

This was on SKY podcast? I think whole interview was from Ashwin's youtube channel interview. I will be surprised if he shared the exact same content in SKY.

Rank average wk. He lived off that 1 nidahas final innings for 5 plus years. Was average before that as well. Didn't deserve to be in the 2019 wc team and messed up ind balance. Average in ipl as well. Good riddance. Bad thing is we will be stuck with his terrible commentary in the com box and have to endure his verbal torture

Dinesh Karthik is in super destructive mode these days, playing on 54 off just 25 deliveries. Let's see if he can bring his team home or not.

The mandatory Dinesh Karthik run fest just before an ICC tournament to con the selectors into selecting him and then turning out to be a complete kitten in the ICC tournament itself.

He will score like this in IPL, then he chokes like usual when it matters. He totally disappears.

No thanks to DK. He can stay in the commie box. Not on the pitch.

Great innings but his first 6-8 balls kind of cost his team the game. Not to take anything away from his superb effort afterwards. Just looking back at it, he kickstarted slightly late, otherwise the chase would have been extremely close.

This is his final season. Having a great time out there. In the SKY interview with Hussain and Athers he explains about the strategy he uses to play finisher role.

I wish he would change his mind and play one more season for RCB. What a fantastic player he is.

KP hit the nail on the head. SRH hit 22 sixes RCB hit 16 siixes. Difference of 36 runs. Hitting fours mean you will need extra balls. That proved to be the difference. People don't realize how iimportant is six hiitting in T20. You can wiin games from losinig siituation. People are stiill doubt of this even after seeinig 4 sixes by Brathwhite in the last over which happened 8 years back.

What amazing insight by KP. Incredible. It would have been very difficult for people to decipher that getting the maximum runs available on a ball is better than getting less than the maximum. Brilliant KP bhai!!! Forever indebted for this insight.

Get the sarcasm. But you will be surprised to know how many people don't get this. It is for them. INcluding some active cricketers not just fans.

Dinesh is making his last IPL a memorable one. He is probably the best death overs batter out there in this IPL, Yesterday's knock was very special but unfortunately he ended up short of chsing that title. The score was too much TBH but still he made the game interesting.

He has the best death over strike rate ahead of Russell/ Pooran and co. this season.

Yes absolutely right. Dinesh looks in much more control when he is striking the ball and he has been doing that on more consistent basis.

This guy is in some form in his final IPL season. SHould he be in the Indian team for this year's T20 world cup?

No, let him go on a high! Why always Indians (Fans/Media everyone) want their players to play till exhaustion & go out on a low getting abused by everyone? If he plays for India again (that too in high profile ICC tournament) he will again not be able to cope with the pressure & expectations! (just like 2019 world cup)

He is doing this bit with RCB because he is under least pressure (belter Chinnaswamy pitches, pathetically poor RCB lineup who are relying upon him as their mainstay batsman, team is anyhow not performing so he is making the best use of his personal contribution...) but things will not be the same in international matches...

Not just 2019 world cup 2022 wc to do ain't made for international that's it

Lol big no we Indians fans seen what he done in 2022 wc so big no
Big match pressure might have had the better of him then. I guess he should blast 200 more runs in the remaining games and should just all it a day for his career. Might be better suited to him.

Rohit Sharma was heard saying on the stump mic when Mumbai Indians took on Royal Challengers Bengaluru a few days ago at Wankhede:

"Shabash DK! T20 World Cup mein selection ke liye push karna hai isko. Dimagh mein chal raha hai iske World Cup. (Well done DK! He is pushing for a spot in the T20 World Cup. His mind is occupied with the thought of the World Cup)."

'I'll do everything I can to be on that flight' — Dinesh Karthik upbeat about T20 World Cup selection

Nearly two years after his final appearance in India colours, Dinesh Karthik is keeping hopes alive for a place in the India squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup in the West Indies and USA.

The 38-year-old, whose last appearance was in the 2022 edition of the T20 World Cup, has been in spectacular form in the ongoing Indian Premier League season.

In six innings, Karthik has racked up 226 runs at an average of 75.33 and a strike-rate of 205.45.

Excelling in a finisher role for Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Karthik has pushed his case for a call-up to the T20I squad with just over a month to go for the T20 World Cup.

"At this stage in my life, it would be the greatest feeling for me to represent India (at the upcoming T20 World Cup)," Karthik said in a press conference ahead of RCB's next IPL game.

"I'm very, very keen to do so. There is nothing bigger in my life other than representing India in this T20 World Cup. I also feel there are three very, very stable, honest people who are at their helm to decide what should be the best Indian team for the World Cup. Rahul Dravid, Rohit Sharma, and Ajit Agarkar. And I'm completely with them.

"I respect any decision that they take. But all I can say is I'm 100% ready. And you know I'll do everything I can to be on that flight to the World Cup."

Several candidates are in the running for the wicketkeeper spot in India's squad for the mega event.

Since 2023, Ishan Kishan, Sanju Samson and Jitesh Sharma have kept wickets for India in T20Is. All three are in the running for a spot as are a few others including Karthik and Rishabh Pant, with the latter making a resounding return to professional cricket after his major accident in late 2022.

Karthik's strength lies in his big-hitting in the death overs, a skill that saw him make it to India's last T20 World Cup campaign as well.

The wicketkeeper-batter has two fifties in six games this IPL season, and has impressed with his ball-striking yet again.

"When I practice, I try and understand, okay, this is what they're going to bowl at me. How am I going to get a boundary visualizing a field that is going to be in place for me?

"So I worked like that, and I worked backwards, and that's helped me, you know, really learn a couple of shots more, you know, at the back end. It's been great to go out there and express myself, and it's been thoroughly enjoyable to do what I'm doing for RCB as a finisher."

The deadline for naming the squads is closing in with the tournament just over a month away and Karthik will have a few more games to make his case stronger.

Is retirement on the cards?

"Just Retired": Dinesh Karthik's Swansong Confirmed By IPL Broadcaster

Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) stalwart Dinesh Karthik concluded his Indian Premier League (IPL) career with a defeat in the Eliminator match against Rajasthan Royals (RR) on Wednesday. Karthik, who had already hinted that this IPL would be his last, received a guard of honour from his teammates after the conclusion of the match in Ahmedabad. Though Karthik himself didn't speak on the topic, the league's broadcaster confirmed the news of his retirement with a social media post after the Eliminator contest. Karthik, who made his debut in the T20 league 16 years ago, remains one of the finest finishers in this format of the sport.

Taking to social media, Jio Cinema, IPL's digital broadcaster, paid tribute to the RCB wicket-keeper batter, who has one title to his name in the league.

Karthik took off his gloves and acknowledged the fans as RCB players went around the stadium thanking the spectators for their support.

Soon a moment to savour for the RCB fans unfolded, Virat Kohli embraced Karthik who seemed to be struggling to fight back his emotions.

As Karthik walked back towards the dressing room, Karthik received a guard of honour from the RCB players.

Karthik ends his IPL career with 4,842 runs in 257 matches, studded with a whopping 22 fifties. In his illustrious IPL career that spanned over 17 years, Karthik featured for six franchises in the cash-rich league.

He made his debut in the inaugural season in 2008 with the Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals). He made a switch to Punjab in 2011 and, thereafter, went on to play for the Mumbai Indians, Gujarat Lions, Kolkata Knight Riders and the RCB.

He ended the ongoing season with 326 runs in 15 matches at an average of 36.22 and a mouth-watering strike rate of 187.36.

The guy is a certified bonafied choker. Cant believe he's had an international career this long. Good riddance. Chokes in every pressure game , every pressure KO both in IPl and international. Just lived off that Nidahas trophy final knock against Bangladesh for a long time and milked it dry.

Dinesh turned himself into one of the best batters at the death, especially if we talk about IPL. This guy would not have retired if he had be selected for the T20 World Cup squad but I think, the time was up for him. Had a good career, a good time to retire. Would have loved it if RCB won the title but as usual, they choked including their top player of the season, Kohli.

The curse is not lifted yet from RCB.

'There was so much fan following and the rivalry': Dinesh Karthik picks Pakistan as his favourite cricketing opponent

The veteran wicketkeeper batter Dinesh Karthik who announced his retirement from all forms of international cricket in 2024 said that his favourite opponent in international cricket is Pakistan. India vs Pakistan cricket match is one of the most followed cricketing rivalries and most of their matches end with a nail-biting contest. Karthik last featured against Pakistan was in the T20 World Cup 2022 in Melbourne Cricket Ground, Melbourne, Australia where India defeated the arch-rivals by four wickets to register their first win of the tournament.

Karthik last featured in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 where he represented Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and scored 326 runs in 15 matches of the cash-rich league.

"My favourite team to play against is Pakistan because there was so much fan following and the rivalry was so high always. It was always a lot of fun playing a game against Pakistan. When you do well against them, its even better” said Karthik as quoted by cricket Pakistan.

Karthik represented India in six Tests, three T20Is and four ODIs against Pakistan where he scored 339 runs. After his IPL announcement, the veteran wicketkeeper batter will be the mentor and batting coach for the franchise.

In One Day Internationals (ODIs), the two teams India and Pakistan clashed 135 times, with India securing 57 victories and Pakistan winning 73 matches. Five matches ended without a result. Talking about Test cricket, India and Pakistan have played 59 matches, with India winning 9 and Pakistan winning 12. The remaining 38 matches ended in a draw. Meanwhile talking about Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is), the teams have squared off 13 times, with India winning 10 and Pakistan securing 3 victories.
