Does anyone know why Moin Khan was dropped from the 2003 World Cup squad in favour of Rashid Latif?

This one has had me thinking for a while... :13:

Moin Khan has been our first choice WK for much of the 90’s and the early 2000’s (was even our LOI captain from 2000-01).

However - he was mysteriously dropped from the 2003 WC in favor of Rashid Latif who had barely played much for Pakistan apart from the 2002-03 period. Moin was definitely the superior batsman between the two from what I recall.

Anyone know why?

I seem to recall Moin returned to the team during the Samsung series against India in 2004 before he was permanently dropped and retired soon afterwards in favor of Kamran Akmal.

Both Rashid and Waqar played for UBL. Rashid was miles ahead of Moin in terms of keeping whereas Moin was marginally ahead of Rashid in terms of batting. All of these factors contributed in the selection of Rashid in 2003 World Cup.

Rashid was better. Moin was done after 2001. Rashid on the other hand improved his batting a lot around that time and was even a better batsman then Moin. In between chances were given to Kamran Akmal ofcourse. By 2004, when Rashid was suspended and Moin brought back, he was a liability not only behind the stumps but also as a batsman.

Moin Khan suffered for being an ex captain, his captaincy record started to suffer in 2001 and his own batting form suffered, but he deserved his spot as an individual player.

Moin had a few bad series and Rashid was the obvious choice. But then Rashid had his own share of poor performances. He also struggled with neck injury. Moin did start to score tons of runs in domestic but then it was the era of Kamran Akmal arrival

Wasim favors Moin and waqas favors Rashid.

If you look at our team since 1996 to 2003, whenever they changed the captain, they also changed the keeper.

Rashid was out of favour with Wasim after the Trent Bridge ODI fix that went awry. He was dropped from the team for essentially winning a match.

He was recalled as captain for the tour to South Africa in 1998, when the board probably felt guilty about the fixing culture within the team, but he couldn't remain fit which meant that he had to make way for Aamir Sohail for the 98/99 home season.

The players conspired against Sohail in order to bring Wasim back as captain in time for the tour to India, by which time the board had washed its hands off the blight at the heart of the team.

When Waqar was announced as captain, he insisted on picking the best wicketkeeper and someone whom he could trust to keep the order in the dressing room. Sadly that team was full of players that had fudged their ages and were over the hill.
