Donald Trump acquitted by Senate in impeachment trial

Trump fires two impeachment witnesses

US President Donald Trump has dismissed two senior officials who testified against him at his impeachment trial.

The US envoy to the EU, Gordon Sondland, said he "was advised today that the president intends to recall me effective immediately".

Just hours earlier, Lt Col Alexander Vindman, a top expert on Ukraine, was escorted from the White House.

Mr Trump is said to desire a staff shake-up after senators cleared him in the impeachment case on Wednesday.

In its historic vote, the Senate decided not to remove America's 45th president from office on charges arising from his dealings with Ukraine.

Lt Col Vindman's twin brother, Yevgeny Vindman, a senior lawyer for the National Security Council, was also sent back to the Department of the Army on Friday.

What about Mr Sondland's recall?
In a statement issued by his lawyer, Mr Sondland said: "I was advised today that the president intends to recall me effective immediately as United States ambassador to the European Union.

"I am grateful to President Trump for having given me the opportunity to serve, to Secretary [of State Mike] Pompeo for his consistent support, and to the exceptional and dedicated professionals at the US mission to the European Union.

"I am proud of our accomplishments. Our work here has been the highlight of my career," Mr Sondland said.

And how was Vindman removed?
Lt Col Vindman's counsel, David Pressman, told the BBC his client had been "escorted out of the White House where he has dutifully served his country and his president".

"There is no question in the mind of any American why this man's job is over, why this country now has one less soldier serving it at the White House," said the statement.

"LTC Vindman was asked to leave for telling the truth. His honour, his commitment to right, frightened the powerful."

It added: "The truth has cost LTC Alexander Vindman his job, his career, and his privacy."

The statement continued: "The most powerful man in the world - buoyed by the silent, the pliable, and the complicit - has decided to exact revenge."

Lt Col Vindman had reportedly turned up for work at the White House as usual on Friday.

What did Trump and his administration say?
As he left the executive mansion on Friday for North Carolina, Mr Trump told reporters: "I'm not happy with him [Lt Col Vindman].

"You think I'm supposed to be happy with him? I'm not."

President Trump has so far not commented further.

According to White House sources, Lt Col Vindman had been expecting a transfer. He was telling colleagues for weeks that he was ready to move back to the defence department, where he still holds active-duty soldier status.

Earlier on Friday, US Defence Secretary Mark Esper told reporters his department welcomes back all of its personnel from assignment.

"And as I said we protect all of our service members from retribution or anything like that," Mr Esper added.

How did Sondland and Vindman annoy Trump?
Testifying in Congress last November, Mr Sondland was very clear in his testimony that a White House visit by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was conditional on Kyiv launching investigations that could be politically helpful to President Trump.

"Was there a quid pro quo [a favour granted in return for something]?" Sondland asked. "As I testified previously, with regard to the requested White House call and White House meeting, the answer is yes."

Mr Sondland was at that time working with Mr Trump's personal lawyer, Rudy Giuliani, on Ukrainian policy at the explicit direction of the president.

Lt Col Vindman also testified last November. He said he was "concerned" after hearing Mr Trump's "improper" phone call on 25 July last year with Ukraine's president.

The call led to Mr Trump's impeachment in December by the House for abuse of power and obstruction of Congress.

Democratic lawmakers argued that the president had dangled US aid in exchange for political favours.

When asked how he had overcome his fear of retaliation in order to testify, Lt Col Vindman testified: "Congressman, because this is America... and here, right matters."

Mr Trump mentioned the Vindman twins in a tirade against his political enemies at the White House one day before ousting them.

What's the reaction?
Eliot Engel, Democratic chairman of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, said in a statement: "This is shameful of course.

"But this is also what we should now expect from an impeached president whose party has decided he is above the law and accountable to no one. "

But Republican Congressman Thomas Massie said he would have fired Lt Col Vindman.

"He's a leaker, not a whistleblower," Mr Massie said. "Current Commander in Chief doesn't take orders from a Lt Col!"

Is Mick Mulvaney next?
In his comments to media on Friday, Mr Trump said reports that his acting chief of staff Mick Mulvaney would be fired were "false".

"I have a great relationship with Mick," said Mr Trump.

North Carolina lawmaker Mark Meadows is being tipped by the Washington rumour mill as a replacement for Mr Mulvaney.

Mr Meadows, who is retiring from the House of Representatives where he led the hardline conservative Freedom Caucus, travelled with Mr Trump on Air Force One on Friday.

At a rare White House press conference in October, Mr Mulvaney appeared to implicate the president in an alleged corrupt deal with Ukraine.

The acting chief of staff told stunned reporters: "We do that all the time." Mr Trump was reportedly outraged by the gaffe.

Mr Mulvaney then walked back his comments in a written statement that said: "Let me be clear, there was absolutely no quid pro quo between Ukrainian military aid and any investigation into the 2016 election."

Who else is on the way out?
Former Illinois congressman Joe Walsh, one of the two long-shot challengers to Mr Trump for the Republican presidential nomination, announced on Friday that he is ending his campaign.

Mr Walsh, who received just 1% of the vote in Monday's Iowa caucus, told CNN the modern Republican party "has become a cult".

"I want to stop Trump. I believe he's a threat to this country. He can't be stopped within the Republican Party. Nobody can beat him."

Bill Weld, former governor of Massachusetts, is now the only remaining Republican seeking to oust Mr Trump, who will seek re-election in November.

No, they don’t.

The people who rule the world don’t give a **** about race, only profit and power.

A guy like Rush Limbaugh gets presidential freedom award by Trump, do you know who that guy is??

The white man makes profit by keeping power through design. Trump was brought in as part of that design, the white folks felt weakened by Obama and hated him because he taught of everyone as equals.

White supremacists don’t rule anything.

Trump won because of lunatic far left and their bozo snowflake supporters.

Dems aligning with far left liberals have ruined their chances.

You'd have to be living under a rock to think Trump isn't a white supremacist supporter lol. Trump won because white superiority > everything else.

Hilliary was not far left lol.

CNN is doing a hit job on Bernie, just because he is promoting equality.

Hit job was, Few Bernie supporters abused other online, lol.

On Trump, he gives an perception of he is an outsider and white folks fell for it, few support him because they believe Trump is making America white again.

US President Donald Trump has defended firing a senior official who testified against him at his impeachment trial, saying he was "very insubordinate".

In a series of tweets, Mr Trump said Lt Col Alexander Vindman, a top Ukraine expert, incorrectly reported the contents of a "perfect" phone call that was at the centre of his impeachment.

He also fired US envoy Gordon Sondland, who testified against him at the trial.

Mr Trump reportedly wants a staff shake-up after his Senate acquittal.

Lt Col Vindman's twin brother, Yevgeny Vindman, a senior lawyer for the National Security Council, was also sent back to the Department of the Army on Friday.

In his first official response to the firings, Mr Trump attacked Lt Col Vindman's reputation, as well as coverage by US broadcasters CNN and MSNBC. He intentionally misspelled MSNBC as "MSDNC", a reference to the Democratic National Committee (DNC).

"Actually, I don't know him, never spoke to him, or met him (I don't believe!) but, he was very insubordinate, reported contents of my "perfect" calls incorrectly, &. was given a horrendous report by his superior, the man he reported to, who publicly stated that Vindman had problems with judgement, adhering to the chain of command and leaking information. In other words, "OUT", Mr Trump wrote.

was not far left lol.

Exactly. Hillary is center-right at best.

Trump’s biggest strength going in to the election is his ability to counter the media. I still remember when the whole ”Grab ’em by the” outrage was going on, Trump brought in females who had accused Bill Clinton of harassing them as a counter-attack.
Trump may be a clown in general, but he does understand that your best defensive is a really good offensive.

The democrats lack a charismatic leader that can take on Trump. Democratic voters don’t trust centrists like Biden and Buttigieg for their ”soft conservatism” and Bernie is way too old and hated in Washington.

Let’s not right off Bloomberg.
A true NY billionaire who can easily throw a billion into his campaign.

The next election will be interesting. The impeachment failed but at least the neutral or undecided voters got the hang of what DT is about.. he is lying ****.

Not really his media strategy was a disaster, he just winged it all through his campaign. But as he said so himself, he can shoot someone in the middle of 5th avenue and his supporters will still support him because he is the symbol of white supremacy which is united and woke. The democrats keep failing because they are bunch of softies who are busy hanging their own so they are left with a 80 year old bernie and 40 year old gay guy. Good luck lol.

I agree.. people mistake trump for a genius and keep mentioning how he played the media and his cards perfectly.. I believe it to be all incorrect. He is actually an idiot.. who happened to stumble onto the presidency. He is NOT a stable genius as he claims. The only smart card he played was that he identified the biggest untapped voter base (under privileged uneducated whites) and he simply brought to the fore their hidden underground prejudice and used it to his advantage. It was a no no for political leaders due to its inherently racist nature before DT normalized it by bashing minorities and claiming whites are victims.

Apart from that, he has done everything under the sun to shoot himself in the foot but circumstances and his strong voter base and Russian have so far protected him.

Democrats should stop wasting money and should also stop playing dirty politics. Just let Sanders get the nomination and Trump should be gone.

Sanders and Biden are the only guys who can beat Trump.

Trump can't be impeached and this is something Pelosi is not understanding. She is wasting money and time like an illogical housewife.

A White supremacist with a Jewish son in law.

What makes you think he is a white supremacist?

I don't consider Trump as a white supremacist. He only cares about himself. He is a narcissist.

He is very close with Ben Carson (black guy) and many other black folks. He is not a racist. But, he is a nasty guy.

White supremacists don't have alot against jews. If a white supremacists had to choose between a brown guy and a jewish guy he would choose the jewish guy (not to mention a rich jewish guy). Matter infact, alot of Trump's base (the bible belt) love the jews and have a big political clout that supports Israel through and through. Even during the time of segregation they did not differentiate between a jew and non jew, they did differentiate between whites and non whites.

Trump is a money and power hungry egotistic maniac.. whoever helps him with his pursuit of money and power, will be his friend. If Jews and Israel support him, he will be their friend for power and money. If white supremacists support him, he will graciously accept it without denouncing white supremacy. It doesn’t make him a white supremacist, yes... but it does make him an opportunist.

You would notice that at every opportunity, he has ripped apart illegal Latinos, Muslims, blacks, even governments of US ally NATO countries but he has never ever... I challenge you to prove me wrong, denounces white supremacists, or white nationalists /alt right, as they call themselves now.

In Charlottesville, during unite the right rally, when a white supremacist ran over a female protestor and killed her with his car, Trumps statement was: “there were some very good and bad people out there on both sides” and that’s all he said.. he never ever denounces Islamophobia, White supremacy, never sympathsizes with Blacks and Latinos even when they are subjected to racist injustices, but he is always quick to defend white nationalists and Jews.
So what does that tell you? If you want to look at it as he is a white supremacist, you could be right .. but I suspect he is just an opportunist and elitist.
Friend of the powerful and rich ... does give a FF about the the poor or the other 90%..

White supremacists hate Jews. There is a forum for them (dunya dubya dubya.. English word for toofanfront dot org).. I visit it at times to check the pulse of the blue collared, working whites without college education who believe in conspiracy theories of white genocide and other such none sense. I suggest you visit the site. They absolutely despise the Jews and most of their theories seem straight out of the brain of some Muslim or Jew hating Pakistani. It’s really astounding. They believe 9/11 was orchestrated by Jews pretty much the way some Muslims think.

Anyhow, I noticed from some discussions there that some of them have caught on to Trump’s act now. They believe he supports their stance or maintains a pseudo moral support for their cause just to get their votes but he has not done anything to help them. He continues to support Jews and Israel and its ticking them off big time. Some even claim kushner is the real President because through him the Jews are now pulling the strings in the background. It’s fascinating!

He has a history of being racists towards blacks and brown people. Read up about the central park 5 or his refusal to give apartments to brown people. He obviously couldn't be a out of closet racist because he had interests in the media but that's like 99% of white racists/supremacists who are in any sort of business. What they do is create systematic hurdles that protect their interests. Look at how he's now changing the immigration policy, strict implementation of public charge rule which was created to keep the Chinese out in the 1800s... so the US can be more European.

I know which forum you're hinting at. I occasionally lurk there too, and the vitriol and invective is breathtaking. There's even a sub-forum for their opponents to come discuss their beliefs, and there I learnt that Harrapa and Mohenjodaro were built by white people.

I found that strangely gratifying: ancient Pakistanis were white after all. The talented ones anyhow.

Hahah.. if anything that proves me even more correct.. he is accusing the protestors (the left) of violently attacking the right, whereas it was one of the protestors who was killed..

My challenge still stands .. prove me wrong.. find me a quote or evidence that suggests he denounced white nationalists or supremacists.. ever!

I don't know, for me jews and white supremacists are two sides of the same coin. I grew up in NY which is filled with hesedic jews who are the most racists people in the world, they won't even shake your hand or look you in the eye if they find out you're brown or muslim. I think together they are the power brokers in the US and work together to keep that status quo. I don't think Trump's daughter marrying Kushner was some sort of anomaly, that's why he still won the election. Had she married a brown or black guy then it would've been a different story all together.

He might have his bias, like I said.. I don’t believe he is a white supremacist in a traditional sense of the word.. because white supremacists hate Jews, mostly.. he doesn’t.. maybe he is one of those who hate everybody who is non white, but loves the Jews as well. Who knows!
I just personally think he is an opportunist.. he didn’t rent his property to browns or blacks because he feared that would bring his property value down or whatever.. I don’t know. But I promise you that if blacks and browns can help him with something you will see him kissing their behinds without a doubt.
He is already kissing upto the Saudi royal family as soon as he became president despite His islamophobic history.. what does that tell you.

Mein yaqeen se keh sakta hoon, wo hum log kehtey hein na “yaar usska koi deen iman nahi” .. ye wo cheez hai.
He doesn’t believe in any causes, doesn’t have any particular belief.. it’s just about what helps him or benefits him.. that’s it.. he will start supporting causes or people who can help him achieve his goals.. that’s it!

That’s a different group of people.. they are called zionists.. they believe they are the chosen people and whatnot.. entirely different from neo nazis or white supremacists .. who hate all non whites because they believe they are better than them, and hate Jews because they believe Jews are a cunning scheming race that’s taken over their country here in the US and control everything.

Some people might overlap between these two groups .. it’s an interesting dynamics? All brought to my attention after trump got elected because all of a sudden these people were in the limelight and you have to be in the know of what’s going on around you so I started reading up on this.. it was astounding how alive and well white supremacy is in the world and now somehow it’s also normalized.. they are now openly “out” in the UK, Europe and US. It’s now considered “kosher” to be white and proud and believe that whites should have “their own country”.. lol

Did anyone really think that the elected leader of the most powerful country in the world was ever going to get impeached?

Heck, I just wish I could use his language on this site without getting my posts deleted! Imagine me calling India a s-hole of a country and getting worldwide admiration!!

It’s fascinating, isn’t it? The believe the theories of that idiot Alex Jones... that there is war on 2nd amendment and sandy hook and other school shootings were staged so the government can take their guns from them.. they used child actors and whatnot! And all of this is being done by scheming Jews..

Absolutely fascinating stuff.. even Hollywood writers couldnt think of such sensationalist agendas!

You think it was impossible because he is the president of the US or it’s impossible for some other reason?

I am pretty sure Nixon would have been convicted and would have been the first president to get impeached and found unfit for presidency had he not resigned.

I don’t think being a president of US has anything to do with the outcome because it’s the US system and people who judge him are also Americans so it’s not beyond belief it could happen.

I think it was a sure failure in Trumps case only because the senate was majority GOP..

Lately all votings has been along party lines except for a few Dems and Romney, of course..

It's funny how all the senators are so afraid of going against trump until they are on their last term or about to retire. Except Romney ofcourse, I think he has other ambitions. Republicans are just too gangster for democrats to handle, denying Obama the right to appoint a supreme court judge was the most ludicrous thing to ever happen, but again that's the power that be at work. If democrats even try that with Trump he will shut down the government and declare world war 3.

I think it was a sure failure in Trumps case only because the senate was majority GOP..

Lately all votings has been along party lines except for a few Dems and Romney, of course..

Nixon was from another age. Back then South Africa was paritioned by race and Austealia wasn't much better.

I think You are wrong.
If Obama had done half the things Trump has done, he would have been impeached, found guilty and thrown out in a matter of weeks..

More than the obvious lunatics like Alex Jones or the stereotypical loser hicks, it is the Richard Spencer types that truly terrify me. Urbane, well-spoken, dapper dressing, sharp hairdos, and the ideology couched in somewhat benign terms as "race realism," "compassionate self-deportation," no outright signs of hatred when they interact with minorities on-camera.

Agreed.. Richard spencer is pure evil.. did you hear how he is now anti trump because he is wise to trumps act now.. he claims now he will vote for sanders! Haha..

Bill Clinton would've gotten impeached if he had another year left in his presidency. Trump is president white pride which makes him teflon don.

I had not heard that. Then there's the news that Trump appears to have made some inroads into support with black and Hispanic men. We live in bizarre times.

Richard Spencer is an alt-right and he hates Jews. Since Trump is pro-Zionist, Spencer probably hates him.

Most alt-right folks hate Jews more than they hate Muslims (based on what I have seen).

That would be just propaganda. I don’t think that’s the case.. he was recently caught lying about how black and brown unemployment is at an all time low.. it was a plain lie.. it’s low but it’s nowhere close to an all time low..

His people start spreading this ** close to elections so people believe he is gaining ground. He approval ratings have improved but they are still pretty bad for someone in his first term. Usually they start going down towards the end of the second term. I think his rating is at 49% right now. Obama’s rating was at 48% towards the end of his presidency.

I hope so, but I've been dismayed by recent conversations I've had around me. I was hoping Bernie, if he is the eventual nominee, would coax quite a few of the disgruntled working class folk back to the tent, but I'm not so sure anymore. "I won't vote for a socialist," I keep hearing. Still, I cling on to hope that once he actually campaigns, and takes on Trump in televised debates, the tide will turn.

I don’t think America is ready for Bernie or the brand of socialism he, Warren and AOC bring to the table. This country is still a very very red blooded capitalist nation and they look at socialism as an evil on par with fascism and communism. They think UK and Europe went “down the drain” because of their socialist policies.

Dude, this isn’t a great post at the moment. Perhaps you would correct yourself because “Jews” are not at all a homogenous group in any way. Maybe you meant “Ultra-Zionists” - many of whom are not actually Jewish themselves.

I had not heard that. Then there's the news that Trump appears to have made some inroads into support with black and Hispanic men. We live in bizarre times.

Trump has forced through the prison reform that has benefited black men, unemployment for black men is a all time low, small business for black men has increased by to around three times under Trump, Wages for black men has increased under Trump.

On top of that Ivanka Trump is spearheading a program to empower black women in business.

OPIC provides finance to companies and entrepreneurs in emerging markets. Last year, President Donald Trump and Congress doubled the agency’s funding capacity to $60 billion. White House senior adviser Ivanka Trump, the president’s daughter, visited Ethiopia in April with OPIC Chief Executive Officer David Bohigian to announce new funding for women entrepreneurs in Africa.

“For women to succeed as entrepreneurs and job creators we must ensure they have equal access to the financing necessary to start and grow their businesses,” Ms. Trump said during the Ethiopia trip.

Life for blacks under Trump is better and advancing faster than under Obama.

You will benefit from detailed research and by not simply believing everything coming from the Trump propaganda machine:

Not to mention he is pardoning US soldiers accused of war crimes!

From your link.

So far, the law has shortened the prison stays of about 2,500 people who were serving disproportionately long sentences for crack cocaine offenses, most of them African American. It has also let more than 3,000 people go home early because of their good behavior during incarceration. And it could lead to improvements in prison conditions.

You provided a link that shows that under Trump unemployment for black men is at a all time low.

I said "unemployment for black men is a all time low".

What has confused you.

Can you read graphs? Do you have at least a very basic and remedial understanding of statistics and how to interpret data in graphs?

If so, look again:

The unemployment rate was going down roughly since the end of 2010 and the downward slope continued towards the end of Obama’s presidency.... that’s a period of six years.. Trump was a beneficiary of that trend. He didn’t cause it.. he didn’t produce it.. he the trend has simply continued in his presidency over the last theee years resulting in the current lowest all time unemployment rate. But who should you credit for that? Any sane and intelligent person would tell you, it’s Obama’s policies. Not Trump’s. You can read the explanation on the page. The rate actually went up a bit a few months back. These are not made up stats/analysis.

From my Link:
“While the First Step Act has allies in the White House—including Trump and his son-in-law Jared Kushner—the officials tasked with implementing it are in the Justice Department. Attorney General Bill Barr, who leads the department, has reportedly raised concerns in private that the legislation’s reforms will drive up crime. And under his watch, the department’s prosecutors have argued that hundreds of incarcerated people applying for relief under the law’s cocaine sentencing reforms are not eligible, according to an investigation by the Washington Post. In some cases, Trump has even stood onstage hugging and congratulating people who were recently released under the law—even as the Justice Department was arguing in court to lock those same people up again.

The Justice Department’s attorneys are now trying to argue that some of the people released early through the First Step Act with drug charges should return to prison. The agency says that some people were convicted of possessing less crack than they actually did, and that judges should consider the larger amount when making decisions about who to set free.”

Yes I can read graphs, and you have given a link that backs up my post where I said that unemployment for black men is at a all time low under Trump.

As I said before, the democrats are the most incompetent bunch. What was the need of the impeachment process if all it did was make Trump more popular? You have to be a new kind of incompetent if your policies end up making a literal clown so popular.

Every man and his dog knew this way before the whole process even began but the idiots did it anyway.

It’s recorded history that once a president faces a crisis or calamity, his numbers surge.

Bush 1 with Desert Storm and JFK with Cuban Missile Crisis, just to name a few.

And Bush with his war on terror, Iraq/Afghanistan etc as wartime presidents are always popular due to the fear factor.

However calamity is the wrong word to use here. Trump is being only feeding on the ignorance of his followers. He kept on saying that they would wrongly indict him and the Democrats fell for it hook, line and sinker.

All presidents that have been impeached have been acquitted and re Trump with the majority belonging to the Republicans it was a dumb move anyway.

Yes, you are quite right.

However, the Democrats made the final vote a lot closer than I expected.
