China has reacted angrily after US President Donald Trump referred to the coronavirus as “Chinese”.

A foreign ministry spokesman warned the US should “take care of its own business” before stigmatising China.

The first cases of Covid-19 were recorded in the Chinese city of Wuhan in late 2019.

However, last week a Chinese foreign ministry spokesman shared a conspiracy theory, alleging the US Army had brought it to the region.

The unfounded accusation led US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to demand China stop spreading “disinformation” as it tried “to shift blame” for the outbreak.

So far, more than 170,000 cases have been recorded worldwide, with more than 80,000 in China.

However, on Tuesday, Beijing said it had recorded just one new case caught in China, with all other new cases brought into the country.

The US president sent a tweet on Monday describing the coronavirus - which causes the disease Covid-19 - as the “Chinese virus”.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has warned against linking the virus to any particular area or group, due to the risk of stigmatisation.

However, a number of US administration officials have referred to it as the Chinese virus. Meanwhile, Mr Pompeo has repeatedly referred to the “Wuhan virus”.

What was the reaction?
Geng Shuang, a spokesman for the Chinese foreign ministry, said the tweet amount to “stigmatisation of China”.

"We urge the US to correct its mistake and stop its groundless accusations against China,” he added.

China’s official news agency, Xinhua, said Mr Trump’s language was “racist and xenophobic” and revealed “politicians' irresponsibility and incompetence”, risking increasing fears over the virus.

There was also criticism from within the US, with New York’s Mayor Bill de Blasio saying the phrase risked “fuelling more bigotry” against Asian-Americans.

President Trump has long accused China of unfair trading practices and intellectual property theft while, in China, there is a perception that the US is trying to curb its rise as a global economic power.

The two have been engaged in a bitter trade war, which saw the US and China impose tariffs on hundreds of billions of dollars' worth of one another's goods.

That appeared to be easing earlier this year as the virus outbreak took hold, with a partial resolution reached in January.

China has kickstarted an elaborate PR campaign. Twitter which was banned till recently is being used by its diplomats to spread crazy stories about the virus' origin. I am not surprised their cyber army is countering any association of the virus with Wuhan/China.

My 2 cents..The virus originated in Wuhan and there should be no issues calling it a Chinese virus when countries like Spain have a flu after their name.

Trump is racist and anti-Asian racism is the most acceptable form of racism. Imagine calling swine flu the "white mans virus". It's white people that killed millions of Native Americans and Aboriginals with diseases like smallpox that they had no latent immunity against.

Absolutely right. When We have names like Delhi Belly or Spanish Flu that are the norm and no one complains so yes the common name for this has to be Chinese virus .

Trump is still able to continue his China bashing even in the midst of a crisis, I suppose he deserves some credit for staying consistent. Maybe it will help redneck Americans die easier knowing it was the fault of the dastardly Orientals from the east.

He is wrong

Wuhan virus is better
That's still racist, why can't you just call it Coronavirus or Covid-19 like a normal person?

Uh...nobody knows what the "delhi belly" is outside India, we generally call it "travelers sickness" or "travelers diarrhea".

If history books can refer to the 1918 influenza pandemic as Spanish flu, even though now we know it didn't originate in Spain, then we too can call this Wuhan virus, or Chinese flu. Especially since in this case there is a collective understanding that it began in China.

He is right. China is a disgusting country and deserves to get called out. I don't get why it was called Coronavirus in the first place. It destroyed the Corona brand which makes beers.

Likewise swine flu should be renamed American flu since it originated from there...

Come to think of it might already be named after a certain American :yk2

Yup, I have observed the same trend. Chinese propaganda machine is running full time right now. The regime is very concerned with how the world views China in regards to this virus.

It originated from China due to their eating habits. So it is Chinese.

For being politically correct, may be he should have said Asian Virus :))

While the Chinese are out to save their neck (which country wouldn't) the reverse propaganda is also in full flow with the North American and European propaganda machines labelling Chinese as dirty and having deplorable dietary choices. Infact in these countries there had been large number of cases of outright racism against people of East Asian descent (not just Chinese because racists can't tell the difference).

Yes but those don't have racial undertones, Asians have faced a lot of racism because of this pandemic already and attempts at renaming CoronaVirus (Covid-19) a virus which already has a popularized scientific name after a nationality is just trying to fan anti-Asian racism.

You're acting like Trump admin people are calling it the "chinese virus" out of sincerity without mal-intent

This morning a White House official referred to #Coronavirus as the “Kung-Flu” to my face. Another liberal who is offended by everything and thinks everything is racist. Trump is absolutely spot on. Stop crying about racism.

Alzheimer disease for example is named after a guy named Alois Alzheimer. Is that racist? Other examples are Crohn's disease and Parkinson disease.

There are many diseases named after people who first discovered them OR patients who suffered from it.

Check out the list yourself:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_eponymously_named_diseases

Now in case of the disease being named after it's discoverer one could argue that's actually an honor but what about those diseases named after then poor patient suffering from it. Surely that's mean.

Trump is a lunatic sometimes but the way he is demonized by the liberal media in the west is cringey. Chinese feeling might get hurt if someone calls it China virus. Big deal. Whole countries are suffering immensely from this disease. People are not only losing their loved ones but also have to fear bankruptcy. It would have been one thing if the disease only originated in China but not only that the regime tried to hide it and downplay it for weeks. Once all this over the whole world needs to hold China accountable for this mess.

People who think china is a disgusting country also think india is a disgusting country and you wouldn't like that.

Well when you consider that Indian ministers are recommending drinking cow urine and consuming cow faeces as a cure for coronavirus, then calling it disgusting could be justified. If it is factual, can it be racist to say so?

:)) are you serious? Those diseases are named after people not races and the average joe wouldn't even know if they are names and wouldn't even know what race to associate it with.

I don't think you understand that America is a multiracial country, this is affecting Asian-AMERICANS, it's not about the Chinese in China - this xenophobia is going to affect millions of AMERICANS of Asian descent, I think in Switzerland y'all assume all Americans are white but we have a huge Asian population that's been here for generations. Trump is just further polarizing his own country.

Yeah people all over the world were joking about it when the disease initially only effected China and the Chinese population was quarantined. Had they instead of making fun of the Chinese actually prepared for the worst case we might have been in a different position right now. The whole world had atleast one month to look at China see what's happening and take precautions but we all failed.

However it's obvious why Pakistani aren't willing to accept any criticism of China . پاک چین دوست زندہ باد.

I am angry but I can see why provoking China at this time is unnecessary. The whole world needs to cooperate. China must be held responsible once we survive this. It's government, not the citizens, deserve all the criticism and anger.

Uh....for me this has nothing to do with Chinese-Pak relations, as Asian-American I'm aware of the widespread racism deeply rooted in western society. A lot of this stems from the wars that we fought against Asian countries in the 20th century and because of the economic rise of Asian countries that threaten our world dominance. People falling for propaganda and news hysteria are sheep.

Trump has been woefully incompetent.

Dude has to do all these jumlas to get attention away.

Gullible folks here are falling for it. :))

If you want to take Chinese to task, ATTACK ITS GOVT.

Not citizens.

Not some names.

Attack its govt.

Relentlessly for being one of the biggest **** of this earth.

That's what is needed.

Rest is all time pass jumlas.

Chinese govt is at fault for this virus because they didn't ban the wild animal trade.

Not poor chinese who participate in this cos it pays.

Or rich chinese who eat this cos there is availability.

The bucks STOPS with the Chinese GOVT.

Call those ****.S out day in and day out and maybe we can make some progress.

Yup, I have observed the same trend. Chinese propaganda machine is running full time right now. The regime is very concerned with how the world views China in regards to this virus.

Explains the sudden liking for Twitter.

https://www.google.com/amp/amp.abc.net.au/article/12055278

From the article....

“Now, the world sees the US as the reason for many problems while the source of the virus remains undetected," it wrote, adding many people on Chinese social media believed the disease began in the US.

Crying racism and blaming US for the virus.

Unfortunately many won’t do that here. You and I know the reason.

I don't know why people are finding it offensive. It is not like he called it Ching Chong virus. Many diseases/viruses are named after certain locations.

There are bigger things to worry about.

China has to take some blame. They shouldn't get a free pass. They should do something about wet market.

I don’t know which part of the US you live in but out here on the East coast there’s hardly been any rise in racism related incidents.

So are you an East Asian?

Fun fact you don’t have to be an East Asian to gain knowledge about this. I have lots of East Asian friends who I am in regular touch with.

People are angry worldwide. Whole world is suffering and some have lost their loved ones.

East Asia needs to address and rectify certain issues instead of getting defensive.

It is time to fix the problem.

He is right in calling this Chinese Virus. Had China taken necessary steps to avoid the spread at the initial stage, we would not be in this situation. Anyhow this virus originated in China, so there is noting wrong in calling this a Chinese Virus.

In adverse times like these...there is no point of being politically correct. I couldnt care less if people call me racist/fascist or whatever but its a fact that this virus originated due to gross eating habbits in China. First SARS and now this Coronavirus but people simply dont learn. Entire human race can go extinct due to this epidemic and you want me to be politically correct just bcoz it will hurt sentitments of few soul in internet? Please.

Well done Trump...well said.

Nothing wrong or racist about it. There was a suberbug first found in delhi and is called NDM-1. Maybe they could have called it the Wuhan Virus if not Chinese virus.

My point was diseases are named in many different ways which may appear unconventional. This can include the name of the first patient or the place it originated from. Others have given much better examples than mine like MERS.

Anyway this virus already had a name, Coronavirus, I still prefer to call it that. Though Chinese flu should be acceptable too.

Everybody knows America is pretty mixed up, full of white, blacks and latinos. Though you can teach me something about Americans. Is referring to Asian dominated areas of town as "Chinatown" considered racism in America? Genuine question.

Look I am against racism and xenophobia. I just don't like crying over every little thing as racism. It only back fires and makes it difficult to address actual far more concerning issues.

If some dumb Americans wants to be racist they will find any little excuse for it. If millions of Asian-Americans are truly going to be vilified for something they never had a role in then the society as a whole needs to rethink what's going wrong and how to adress it.

If a Trump is racist towards Asians then that's a big issue needed to be addressed. Regardless of how he refers to the virus. It's the media that's polarizing the American society in my view. Every sane person realises that he is calling it China flu due to it being the country of origin and not just because Chinese people as a group have something to do with it. If he was calling for isolation of Asians in America and quarantining them en mass, if he was telling people to keep their distance from their Chinese neighbors and if he was telling them to not eat at Asian restaurants and avoid Chinatown then yes I would be on board with you.

Don't American of Asian descent who have been living in America for generations feel addressed when Trumps says the health of all Americans is his main concern? Trump banned Europeans to enter the country once Europe was hit by the flu, racism?

You can't curb racism by trying to censor people over every little thing. Too much political correctness is harmful too. Some people might refer to it as China flu and have a racist under tone to it and that's a problem. However it shouldn't limit my freedom of expression.

For me it's clear history books can and should refer to this as the China flu.

Exactly. Biden had criticized China travel ban, that actually helped control the spread of the disease..

Completely unrelated but 'Chinese Democracy' is an underrated album.

I prefer the name The Wuhanese Killer to be an apt nick for Corbid 19

BTW I got my N95 masks delivered from Amazon but it's made in China (mfg date- Dec 19) 🤦

I meant why our fellow poster syed1 would be quick to defend the integrity of China.

Do you really identify as Asian-American and not Middle Eastern or Indo/Pak origin. I always found it annoying how in English speaking part of the world Asian = East-Asian.I don't understand why you as a Pakistani origin person put yourself in the Asian category.

Were Chinese-Americans equally effected by America's wars in the Middle East?

Which propaganda are you referring to. It has been established that Chinese doctors were reporting this disease back in December and were told to be quite by the regime.

How long did the delivery take and what country are you living in right now.

Coronavirus - made in china
Mask - made in china.

By all criticism of China the world still depends on China. Most masks are manufactured in China so no surprise yours is too. Many western companies have a shortage of masks and need China to restock.

How the hell is he allowed to get out of his home let alone be front runner for the Presidency?

Americans are screwed in Nov 2020 elections.

lol.

I received my N95 40 days after ordering. Made in China but gone through the US customs check.

The stage is set for Trump to seal his next 4 years.

Virus alert, markets tank, Trump shows leadership, markets rally, just in time for the US elections.

This is more about the a Tweet than people realise.

Its racist but hard to sympathize with Chinese regime considering the conspiracy theories coming from them. They only made the situation worse by trying to understate the magnitude of the virus.

Last time i checked, there was a thing called the "SPANISH Flu".

It was called the "Spanish Flu" even though it didn't even originate in Spain.

No points for guessing where it most likely originated from...

China

I have no problem with calling it the Chinese virus but that really doesnt solve anything at all.

That was 1918, now it's 2020. You wanna follow more social conventions from 1918?

Yeah, but the way in which Trump and his cronies are referring it is all wrong. It's all very well and easy to point fingers and blame others but you can't stop nature.

People like you love to be politically correct all the time. The fact the Koreans are facing racism is because of China. Stop defending China and stop being so bloody sensitive. China deserves all the criticism.

Actually, back in the day, people were far more intolerant and triggered by anything remotely controversial or taboo.

This whole ”snowflake PC-culture” rhetoric is so overused.

I have been living in the UK for 16 years and I can tell you that people's attitudes have changed a lot in that period, at least here in the UK. 10-15 years ago, people wouldn't be so easily offended by the tiniest of things. Nowadays, you have to think 10 times before you say something, otherwise, you risk someone calling you a racist, sexist, homophobe or whatever.

Ebola was named after the river...
Wuhan virus would be a perfectly apt name...

The Chinese government have blood on their hands and have the gall to complain about a damn name...every single death caused, every single job lost, every single business shutdown is down to these fascists...

It is a racist comment imho, less because of the language and more because of the tone.

3 out of the last 4 new coronavirus found have been from china:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Novel_coronavirus

I wonder why none of them were labelled the Chinese virus while the one from the Arab countries was called the "MIDDLE EAST Respiratory Syndrome"

It's "Middle east" (A region) not "middle eastern", big difference from calling this the "Chinese virus" and middle east includes a various different nations, they didn't name it the "Arabian Respiratory Syndrome" which would've been racist.

So, would you be fine if it is called China virus or Wuhan virus?

Maybe Spanish people should start complaining about Spanish flu.

That's still racist, why can't you just call it Coronavirus or Covid-19 like a normal person?

Uh...nobody knows what the "delhi belly" is outside India, we generally call it "travelers sickness" or "travelers diarrhea".

Well according to you calling it the "Wuhan Virus" is racist LOL

So what is the different between calling the middle east virus as "Middle East Respiratory Syndrome" and calling this the "Wuhan Virus"?

How is this racist but the naming of the MERS virus wasn't? :ishant

His logic doesn't add up.

Many diseases are named after locations/people. It is not a big deal.

We should focus on tackling the virus and not this nonsense.

Feel sorry for Spain...the Spanish flu had absolutely nothing to do with them...

Some historians have suggested that's the Chinese at work with that flu too...

It's racist because the person who is using the term is a racist, and he's using it to appeal to racist people. It's not that hard to figure out.

lol People now giving a virus a nationality.

If the Virus is Chinese , yanks should close their borders to it???

Look at the post not the poster.

If calling the virus which originated from “MERS” is not racist then how is calling this virus the “Wuhan Virus” racist?

For once I agree with trump's sentiment
Zoonotic illnesses are rare but are invariably gruesome. Its unfortunate really that a country with such poor ethical standards is so large because it gives so much opportunity for these mutations to happen and for these viruses to find a way to jump ship.
Reminder that both black death and spanish flu are thought to originate in china. I think corona will be worse than spanish flu in the end.
I mean really china bat soup? *** are you thinking

It'd be racist if they called it "Arab Respiratory syndrome"

then how is calling this virus the "wuhan virus" racist?

Wuhan is a geographical location while arabs are the people who live in the Middle East

You're contradicting yourself. Make up your mind

Would you agree with Muslims or Jewish groups calling the 'Swine flu' the Kaffir flu or Non-believer flu? After all the swine flu was a result of people wanting to eat pigs.
