What’s the story?
In less than three days, India and Pakistan are set to face each other, but this time, it's not on the cricket field. Instead, it will be on a baseball ground. During the first ever Dubai Cup for the India versus Pakistan bilateral baseball series, both teams will face each other twice over the course of this weekend.

Pakistan Federation Baseball (PFB) Secretary Mazhar Ahmad stated, "The federation is holding the Dubai Cup Pakistan-India Baseball Series at Dulsco Playfield Al Qouz Dubai. The national baseball teams of Pakistan and India are participating in this series. Two games will be played on December 9 and 10."

The context
When India and Pakistan face each other on the cricket field, the highly intense contests make the entire cricket fraternity sit up and take notice. A similar tremor can be felt in the hockey arena as well. Hopefully, we are in for a couple of riveting baseball matches between the two Asian neighbours.

The heart of the matter
The World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) has sanctioned this high-voltage series in Dubai. In coordination with the Amateur Baseball Federation of India (ABFI), the series has been arranged by PFB.

PFB, which is hosting the event, announced that the tournament will be held at the Dulsco Playfield Al Qouz Stadium in Dubai. In order to generate extra motivation among the players, the points earned by the teams in this series will be added to the world ranking points.

What's next?
Both Indian and Pakistani baseball teams will reach Dubai on 7th December. The two matches are set to be held on December 9 and 10.

Author's take
India and Pakistan share a great rivalry in other sports such as cricket and hockey. Due to the prevailing political scenario, bilateral sporting ties between the two countries have taken a backseat. In such case, the baseball series comes across as a tremendous initiative with an aim of bringing the sporting fraternities of the two nations together.

Looks like this is the closest we're going to get to cricket between the two countries.

Pakistan beat India to take the gold.

Yet another tournament final in which we dish out a wholesome phainti to the parosis.

KARACHI: The Pakistan Baseball team won gold after defeating India 11-2 in the Dubai Baseball Cup at Emirates Little Baseball Field on UAE’s Independence Day.

The Greenshirts scored 11 runs in nine innings, while India could only manage once apiece in the second and third innings.

Umair Imdad Bhatti was the player of the match with five runs to his tally, which included a home run.

Heartbreak for Pakistan in baseball cup final

Pakistan Baseball Federation (PBF) Executive Director Syed Fakhar Ali Shah told The Express Tribune that the win will help Pakistan climb up the rankings ladder. “The team played really well and performed outstandingly against India,” he said. “This will help Pakistan in rising up the world rankings.”

Fakhar added that the match was held as an alternate to the West Asia Cup, which was held in Islamabad earlier in February where teams from Sri Lanka, Nepal, Iraq, Iran and Pakistan took part, but India were unable to participate as they were not granted visas.

“The Indian team was not issued Pakistani visas and missed the event which also affected their ranking, so Pakistan and Indian Baseball Federation decided to play a rankings match at a neutral venue. Following the agreement both federations requested the World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) and they gave this match the desired stature,” he said.

Fakhar said the match was held in Dubai on WBSC’s request. “The reason for selecting Dubai as the neutral venue is that the WBSC has been requesting the president of PBF Syed Khawar Shah to work on the development of baseball in Arab countries, as they want to promote the sport in the region.”

At the prize distribution ceremony, the president of UAE Baseball Softball Federation said: “It was good to see India and Pakistan baseball teams in Dubai and I hope that the series will be fruitful for the promotion and the development of baseball in Dubai.”
