Following PCR tests administered yesterday (Monday) in Bristol, The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) can confirm that seven members - three players and four management team members- of the England Men's ODI party have tested positive for COVID-19.

In collaboration with Public Health England, Public Health Wales and Bristol Local Health Authority, those impacted will now observe a period of self-isolation from July 4 following the UK Government's protocol on quarantine.

The remaining members of the party have been deemed close contacts and will also isolate.

The ECB have confirmed the Royal London ODIs and the Vitality IT20s against Pakistan will go ahead. Ben Stokes will return to England duties and captain the squad – which will be named in the next few hours.

Incoming squad and support team members will follow PCR tests and bridging protocols to ensure safe entry to camp.

Tom Harrison, Chief Executive Officer, commented: ‘‘We have been mindful that the emergence of the Delta variant, along with our move away from the stringent enforcement of bio secure environments, could increase the chances of an outbreak. We made a strategic choice to try to adapt protocols, in order to support the overall wellbeing of our players and management staff who have spent much of the last 14 months living in very restricted conditions.

Overnight we have worked swiftly to identify a new squad, and we are grateful to Ben Stokes who will return to England duties to Captain. We also recognise the impact this news will have on our First Class Counties and their Men’s playing squads and thank them, along with our partners Sky and Royal London, for their ongoing support in dealing with this pandemic.’’

looks like another "rest" for englands main xi and Pakistan will face a weaker team like previously, not a bad thing will probably make things a little more competitive, imagine it was the other way around tho...

So it is England Lions vs Pakistan yet again, and we will still get mauled.

"Its all bcz of Wasim Khan,,, he should have worked on getting right restrictions for England team... he has spent so much time in England, if he cant fix them how can he fix and run PCB.. this is just shame.... also, had Asad shafiq and khurram manzoor been in there and if Sarfraz was the captain, this would not have happened"

expected tweet by some cartoon journalists

This would be your expected response after your bashing of PCB for the Covid cases in PSL was thoroughly humiliated during IPL and then now with these positive cases.

If these were Pakistani players/management, this thread would have already surpassed 20 pages by now. Some posters have such pathetic double standards against their "own" that it puts me off reading this forum.

Will the whole England squad be replaced or just the three players in question ?

I bet your looking for angle where you could tell us Sethi would have saved the ECB from the "incompetence" of WK. Now you will looking closely at the players with the virus and praying that its MA or AR and looking for an angle where their race is the reason for the virus. If failing that, you will quietly disappear.

Large swathes of the population all over the world have got Covid. If any of us tested every weekend some of us would flash +ve too.

I'm betting all of these guys - being agile sportsmen - are asymptomatic.

ECB say. Most are asymptomatic, those who are not, are definitely feeling unwell, but it is not significant at this stage

Interesting that you failed to mention the ineptness of the ECB in this case.

Think you are now beginning to understand the whole issue better.

ECB have stated that players will be pulled from current county matches and will join the England squad.

England Men have named an 18-strong group for the Royal London Series against Pakistan.

The announcement comes after the news that three members of the initial playing group and four members of the management staff had tested positive for COVID-19, and consequently the entire squad initially selected was required to isolate.

Ben Stokes will return to the squad to captain the side and Chris Silverwood, who had been due to take some time away during the white-ball series, is back as Head Coach.

In total, there are nine uncapped players in the squad.

Ben Stokes (Durham, captain)
Jake Ball (Nottinghamshire)
Danny Briggs (Warwickshire)
Brydon Carse (Durham)
Zak Crawley (Kent)
Ben Duckett (Nottinghamshire)
Lewis Gregory (Somerset)
Tom Helm (Middlesex)
Will Jacks (Surrey)
Dan Lawrence (Essex)
Saqib Mahmood (Lancashire)
Dawid Malan (Yorkshire)
Craig Overton (Somerset)
Matt Parkinson (Lancashire)
David Payne (Gloucestershire)
Phil Salt (Sussex)
John Simpson (Middlesex)
James Vince (Hampshire)

Managing Director of England Men's Cricket, Ashley Giles, said: "It's a great opportunity to play on the biggest stage, and for most of the players selected it's not necessarily something they would have been expecting 24 hours ago.

"It's an exciting group of players, with some young talent and some players who have impressed at domestic level over a long period of time.

"We're in unprecedented territory, in terms of replacing an entire squad and management team, and I'm very proud of how everyone has come together in order to get it done - both those within the ECB and from the county game.

"Ben hasn't captained our ODI side before so it's a huge honour for him. We all wish him well and it's a role I'm sure he'll thrive in.

"I'd like to also put on record the thanks of the ECB to the PCB for their support and understanding during this time."

PCB statement

Lahore, 6 July 2021:

Pakistan Cricket Board has been in close contact with the England and Wales Cricket Board regarding concerns about the health and safety of its players since the news of Covid-19 outbreak in the England camp was shared with it on late Monday evening.

The PCB is satisfied by the assurances and guarantees provided by the ECB on behalf of its medical panel, and feels comfortable with the existing protocols that have been put in place to ensure all the Pakistan players and player support staff remain safe and secure throughout the duration of the series, which commences on Thursday, 8 July, in Cardiff.

The PCB has also been in touch with its team management and has advised them to exercise extra caution while in the hotel or at the match venue.

Caps in this ODI squad: Stokes 98, Ball 18, Vince 16, Mahmood 4, Duckett 3, Malan 3, Parkinson 2, Briggs 1, C Overton 1

If they all play, it will be the least experienced England ODI side (157 caps) since the Rothmans Four-Nations Cup Plate Final in Sharjah in 1985 (81 caps)

England are working on a "knife edge" after their one-day squad was hit by a coronavirus outbreak, says director of cricket Ashley Giles.

Positive tests returned by three players and four backroom staff have forced the entire squad into isolation.

A new team and staff has been named for the three-match series against Pakistan, which begins on Thursday.

"It's been a mad 24 hours," said Giles. "We got the news we feared last night of a bigger spread."

England's third one-day international against Sri Lanka in Bristol on Sunday was abandoned because of bad weather.

The original squad was due to then play Pakistan in Cardiff and when Giles spoke at lunchtime on Tuesday, they were still at the team hotel before travelling home.

Everyone associated with the squad has received at least one dose of a coronavirus vaccine.

"The aim is to get them home as quickly as possible," said Giles. "Each case needs to be treated individually and risk assessed."

The three-match ODI series against Pakistan is relatively low-key. The new squad includes nine uncapped players and will be led by Ben Stokes, who is working back to fitness after a broken finger.

In contrast, the three T20s that follow are important in England's build-up for the World Cup in October. With that series beginning on 16 July, the chances of any member of the original squad taking part seems slim.

England were able to complete their entire 2020 home schedule by living, playing and training in bio-secure conditions in Manchester and Southampton.

During that time, there were no positive tests among the hosts or touring sides West Indies, Pakistan, Ireland and Australia.

However, England encountered problems during their winter tours. A one-day series in South Africa was postponed in December after a number of positive tests, while all-rounder Moeen Ali tested positive at the beginning of the tour of Sri Lanka in January.

Mindful of the toll the bio-secure conditions can take, the restrictions imposed this summer are not as stringent as last year, with Giles saying it is a balancing act between guarding against coronavirus and allowing the players some freedom.

They are allowed to mingle with each other in their hotels and can travel to play golf with the right risk assessment, but little else.

"We're not gambling. We're fully aware of the risks," said Giles.

Three players and four backroom staff have tested positive for coronavirus, forcing the entire squad into a period of isolation - it is not known which individuals have tested positive.

"That's the knife edge we're working on all the time. Looking after our people, looking after the revenues, too."

Giles also said he was "confident" that no one associated with the squad had breached any protocols.

Beyond the Pakistan series, the England and Wales Cricket Board will be mindful of similar disruptions hitting the high-profile five-Test series against India, which begins on 4 August, or the inaugural season of The Hundred, starting on 21 July.

Many restrictions imposed on the public in England are being scrapped on 19 July.

"We're living at a different rate to society," said former England spinner Giles. "It's particularly difficult when we know one case can shut you down, let alone seven.

"We're juggling with the amount of time players have spent within these environments. To expect them to adhere to the sense that they go to the ground, stay away from each other, mask on, go to their room. If relaxing is allowing those guys to eat together, spend time together, it's almost impossible to remove that risk."

Further ahead, England are set for an Ashes tour of Australia this winter.

Australia has adhered to some of the strictest Covid restrictions in the world, with all visitors facing a 14-day quarantine period on arrival into the country.

The greater Sydney area is currently in a two-week lockdown, while on Tuesday the Formula 1 Grand Prix in Melbourne in November and the Moto GP race on Phillip Island in October were both called off.

The first Ashes Test in Brisbane is due to begin on 8 December.

"It's on," said Giles. "There's obviously a lot to talk about. Every 24 hours, there are a lot of challenges.

"We'll do everything possible. We're all aware of the mental pressures this causes all of our people and we've got to try and work our way through that."

Scary stuff this.

If they were in a bubble, I guess the question that has to be asked is how did the infection spread.

I don’t get it why they picked John Simpson when they could have gone for Davies, Foakes or even Pope.

People should not write this team off.The players will be playing at home which is a big advantage. They are familiar with the conditions.Subcontinent teams struggle against swing and seam bowling.England bench is so strong now that it difficult for these players to get into first team.Pakistan will have to play good cricket to beat this team.

True. They'll be competitive.

Problem is, if Pakistan lose, the criticism will be huge.

Ashley Giles "We are very confident the players haven’t breached any of those protocols,” said Giles, managing director of England men’s cricket. “We can almost identify through the positive cases that that is what we are seeing in how that spread has gone. We can’t say where it originated that is an almost impossible task from what I’m told amongst that many. We can identify how some of this has developed through close contact but given the size of the infection of the group it would be impossible and too risky to take any of the group forward.”

Great to have Will Jacks in the squad and looking to see him in action.

His bat speed and power hitting could be lethal.

Now pressure is on Misbah and company

If they can't win now, hey must resign with immediate effect

Not really. They are now on a hiding to nothing. If they win its not a win and if they lose, people will use it to attack the team. What we should also do is to give our young players like Shafiq a run.

This series is now unwatchable.

Any series with Pakistan in it is barely tolerable anyway, but you had the full-strength England team to look forward.

Now it is England Lions vs a talentless and unprofessional team.

I would pass.

Well said...and if nothing of the above works, he can always call it a 'fluke'

Pak should win the series now. No excuses.

Weird that Alex Hales isn't considered better than some of the names here by English selectors.

No one is forcing you to watch Pakistan.I prefer to watch my local club team than Indian team which plays in Essex league.

I may stand corrected but I never knew it was legal obligation to watch this series.

And I can say, with the defensive mindset of Misbah

Even beating this England team would be very hard for Pakistan best team vs England T team

Hoping to see England Z team in Pakistan before World Cup

Yar ye dheet log hain ,,, jootay maar maar kar nikaalo, fir bhi nahi jaeyngey. Who gives up sucking on such a high salary with perks and no accountability?

It will be very humiliating if Pakistan does not win the series 3-0.

England all-rounder and stand-in skipper Ben Stokes has said that filling Eoin Morgan’s shoes for the ODI series against Pakistan will be ‘unbelievably big to fill’. Stokes was announced as the captain for the three ODIs against Pakistan after the first-choice squad reported seven COVID-19 cases – three cricketers and four back-room staff – and are now in self-isolation.

“With both Morgs (Morgan) and Jos (Buttler) unavailable, not to mention the likes of Moeen (Ali) and Rooty (Joe Root) and the rest of our first-choice squad, I knew I had to step up, and just like it was last year with the Test team, it will be a huge honour to lead this side. The last time I captained a white-ball side was in an IPL warm-up game. So, this will be new for me too, but my experience as a player should get me through, even if Morgs` shoes are unbelievably big to fill,” Stokes wrote in his column for The Mirror.

Stokes admitted to be taken completely off-guard by the announcement on Tuesday (July 6). His initial plan was to not feature in white-ball matches to prepare well for the Tests against India in August.

“Well that (COVID-19) escalated quickly! To say that I wasn’t expecting to be leading England out in a one-day match in Cardiff this week would be a huge understatement. But here we are, and duty calls. I only packed clothes for three days away from home, so there will need to be a bit of extra washing done, although I hadn’t actually received any of my new England one-day kit yet so that should all be waiting for me, I hope.”

The all-rounder added that despite nine uncapped players in the squad, the England team will field a ‘proper international-class side’.

“We might be 20 first-choice players down through isolation and injuries, but we will still be putting out a proper international-class side with plenty of experience at the highest level. I’m not sure how many countries could lose this many players and still have such quality to choose from at such short notice. We are lucky to have the strength in depth that we have in white-ball cricket, and this is just a fantastic opportunity for these players to show what they can do.”

The ODI series against Pakistan starts from Thursday (July 8) in Cardiff.

Provided the sponsors are still sponsoring and the broadcasters are still broadcasting, this will provide more meaningful importance.

Not sure whether your watching or not would make any difference.

And you're probably blaming Wasim Khan for infecting all the England players..

This is not even England Lions team. I don't think Simpson or Payne have played for England Lions in the recent past. This is a England Z team, similar to SA in T20 series against Pakistan.

Babar Azam:

“We cannot take any player playing for England lightly.

“They might be new players, but they play for England. I know a few who have played in the T20 Blast and those we don’t know have researched their performance.”

Your talking about tests am talking about odis and t20s.thiers only abit of swing in odis in England but mainly flat tracks.

Ben Stokes did not hesitate when England called on him to shelve his own recovery plans and lead a makeshift squad against Pakistan, insisting “my job needed me”.

Stokes underwent surgery in April after fracturing his left index finger at the India Premier League and was originally left out of the three-match Royal London Series as England favoured a cautious approach to his comeback.

Limited-overs captain Eoin Morgan explained Stokes’ absence on Sunday by saying “the last thing we want to do is rush somebody back” but new plans were being drawn up on the run less than 24 hours later when it became clear there was a Covid-19 outbreak in camp.

With three players and four staff members testing positive, and the rest of the group joining them in 10 days of mandated isolation, a brand new playing group was being put together and there was only one man Chris Silverwood wanted to take over from Morgan as skipper.

“It was the last call I was expecting, late in the evening. It was short and sharp,” recalled Stokes, who was pulled from Durham’s LV= Insurance County Championship fixture against Warwickshire.

“Spoons (Silverwood) straight up asked me the question ‘can you come and do it?’ I was like ‘yeah’.

“After the call happened my wife sent me a screen shot of an article saying ‘England aren’t going to rush Ben Stokes back’. I tried to make light of the situation…it’s one of these situations that’s an example of ‘if you don’t laugh you’ll cry’.

“But it was like when I came back for Durham a bit early. My job needed me to do something, so I had to stand up and do that, same with this.

“This is earlier than planned from a medical and fitness point of view but when a job comes and calls you, you need to stand up and make yourself available.”

Stokes, of course, was not the only one to a get a surprise invitation to head for Sophia Gardens. Seventeen others were summoned at short notice – nine of them uncapped at ODI level and several others ending lengthy hiatus’ from the international stage.

Their first job on arrival was to pass a PCR test – all of which came back negative on Wednesday afternoon – and team meetings were held via conference call.

England's Ben Stokes in action
Stokes underwent surgery in April after fracturing his left index finger (Lee Smith/PA)

It will be no slight on them if they appear a disjointed unit, they have never played together as a group before and are unlikely to do so again, but Stokes wants them to discharge their duties with both pride and enjoyment.

“Although this has been a very quick turnaround of events in having to pick a new squad, it doesn’t matter what names are on the back of an England shirt: we are walking out there as the number one team,” he said.

“It’s an amazing opportunity for guys either on the fringes previously or who’ve been called up for the first time.

“Situations like these are so rare and such a fluster, I would say you have got a chance to represent your country so let’s do it with a smile on our face.

“I’m not going to put too much pressure on myself or the guys who will be playing because it is exceptional circumstances so we will just get through it. I just want to make sure everyone has a good time.”

Stokes has played with or against all of his new team-mates at some level, going back as far as sharing an England Under-19 dressing room with Gloucestershire’s David Payne, but there is one player he knows better than most.

He has long advocated for county colleague Brydon Carse, an aggressive seamer who has been edging ever closer to senior selection for a couple of years, and now has the chance to let him loose at the highest level.

“I’ve known Brydon from the academy days and he’s come on over the past few years,” said Stokes.

“I’ve been back for four or five weeks at Durham and he’s a seriously-impressive cricketer. He’s know for his bowling but he is a genuinely good batsman as well.

“He’s got pace, that X factor every team wishes they have and I see him in a similar role to the one Liam Plunkett had in the England team for a number of years.”

That endorsement is as good a reason as any to believe Carse will make the cut on Thursday and whoever joins him in an experimental XI will have the same instructions from Stokes: “Don’t change anything, because what you normally do is what has got you here in the first place.”

Possible XI: Crawley, Vince, Malan, Stokes, Duckett, Lawrence, Simpson (wk), Overton, Carse, Mahmood, Payne.
