You may know that Elliot Page (formerly Ellen Page) came out as trans. He will be transitioning from female to male.

He previously came out as a lesbian and is married to her long-time girlfriend.

I just have one question: Will they divorce now since his long-time girlfriend is a lesbian and Elliot is a male?

Yes, maybe she felt as a woman earlier, and now he is feeling like a male inside. We should give safe space and be careful to use their preferred pronoun.

Maybe she never really did feel like a woman from the start and just pretended. Anyway .. what pronouns do you use for transgenders, like say the Hijras of India ?

I don't think they will divorce in the short term, but the long term girlfriend may now be questioning if she herself was really a lesbian since she is now going to be married to a transitioning male. Could be she will decide to progress further by taking other males into consideration as a future partner.

Actually I always get confused between these terms.. LGTBQ (sorry if I missed any). Eunuchs are gays right, who are also transgender? And what is queer? And sorry for asking, why they call their dog and pony show, the pride march? Just be whatever you are instead of shouting from the roof tops about how you like sex, as these are sexual identities.

Correct, who cares? Which is why we should be asking why these personal life stories are rammed down our throats everyday by the media and the people themselves using social media. Who cares?

We don't care if someone wakes up one morning feeling like a bloke, and the next morning like a woman.

So she was never a lesbian and always a straight man?

What ailment?

Not every transgender is mentally ill, but mental illness and deep rooted psychological issues can lead a person to become a transgender.

Today we live in an age where the world is obsessed with political correctness. People are scared to death to establish a link between mental illness/insanity and someone deciding to switch genders or become an alien or a garden chair, even though it definitely exists.

A lot of people who end up as transgenders still struggle to find happiness and contentment. They still suffer from identity crisis and remain depressed.

These people need therapy and psychiatric help rather than getting pushed deeper into their insanity under the banner of political correctness.

As long as we do not stop our obsession with this “woke” culture of political correctness, we will not be able to help these people because that is all a lot of such people need. Help.

If transgenderism is a western woke thing, what about the hijra community in the subcontinent?

India officially recognises them as a third gender .. which means the country has made a colossal mistake when according to you the science says the trans community should be needing psychological help. Pakistan has a third gender made official too I think.

The third gender is mostly to give an identity to intersex people, who were previously often referred to by the now relatively outdated term hermaphrodites.

You start off by saying "not every transgender is mentally ill" and then the rest of your post reads as if you believe they are all mentally ill. Is this your personal opinion or is it your medical opinion based on the latest scientific literature?

Personally, I am more worried about mental health issues among "straight" people, since we constitute >95% of the population. Mental health is a medical crisis in most societies, but especially in Pakistan where there are only 1000 or so trained psychiatrists for a country of >200m people, with >50m people needing urgent mental health attention.

My point is, it is futile and probably incorrect to use this news as an opportunity to label all transgender people as being mentally ill.

In case of India, third gender is an umbrella entity. Whoever doesn't fall in first and second, will fall in the third. That's why it doesn't mention any specific names but just "others".

Being intersex or hermaphrodite is totally different from being transgenders. People can be and are born with ambigious genitalia and can be intersex or unisex karyotypically however transgender is when a fully biological and karyotypical male/female transitions to the opposite gender by choice. Hijras are not comparable to transexuals in the west.

Gender Dysphoria (GD) is an officially recognized psychiatric disorder and is thus listed in the DSM-5.

Not every transgender suffers from this disorder but a lot of them do, and the treatment does not include switching gender. That is the final stage of completely succumbing to the disorder.

But this is what is wrong with the woke culture and irrational obsession with personal freedom - the American Psychiatric Association (APA) is under pressure to discard the possibility of GD in spite of the decades of research that has gone into this disorder and also the thousands of people who have actually overcome their GD with therapy and treatment and have lived and are living normal lives.

GD itself is a new term because until few years back, it was known as Gender Identity Disorder (GID) but the woke culture took offense to the term ‘disorder’ and bullied APA into change the name to GD.

However, removing the term ‘disorder’ does not change the fact that it is a ‘disorder’ and it actually exists, and people who suffer from GD/GID need psychiatric help.

Unfortunately, it is only a matter of time before APA is bullied into completely discarding the possibility of GD, which means hundreds of people who suffer from this disorder will not get any help and will rather be pushed deeper into their disorder under the guise of personal freedom and choice.

Parents will not be seeking psychiatric help if their son decides that she is a girl and would end up getting a skirt for him, even though if you suffer from GD, then that is clearly not the solution to your problem or the experience that you are having.

Does transphobia and bigotry exists? Yes they sure do, but every critic of this woke culture and political correctness is not a bigot or transphobic.

This woke culture has its merits but it is also not allowing mentally ill people to get help because of this irrational belief that you can do anything you want as long as you are not hurting anyone else.

Transgenderism itself is not a western woke thing, but how you perceive transgenderism is.

The problem with the western woke culture is that they have normalized transgenderism to such an extreme extent that they no longer entertain the possibility that the transgenderism of an individual could be rooted in a psychiatric problem.

That is why as I mentioned in my previous post, the APA was forced to change the name of GID to GD, because woke culture took offense to the term disorder.

Now in a few years, woke culture will probably force APA to remove GD altogether and not recognize it as a psychiatric problem in spite of the fact that thousands of people have been helped and have lived normal lives with therapy.

Western woke culture will also tell you this guy is mentally stable and should be allowed to do what he wants to his body because he is not harming anyone.

Again - not every transgender suffers from GD, but a lot of them do because no matter how much we try to normalize it, it is not normal behavior.

India did not do the wrong thing by recognizing transgenders. Similarly, Pakistan is also not doing the wrong by trying to give them more rights.

However, they also need to facilitate therapy for people who suffer from GD. Unfortunately, since most of the Hijra community in Pakistan and perhaps in India too are usually from poor communities, they do not have the means to seek professional help and therapy.

Very well said. The extreme normalization and push to 'explore one's identity' may have masked deeper rooted problems which can spiral out of control in the future.

And the APA being bullied into discarding research just highlights some of the damaging effects of the 'political correctness' culture.

Who cares? It's their personal life.

Nice contribution Doc. Although it is quite informative to see some more thoughtful responses to what is now becoming a problem a complicated issue in western societies.

This is a good, informative post. Thanks for sharing. I did not know about this particular listing in the DSM.

I also agree on the point that the woke culture does do quite a bit of harm, unintentionally perhaps, to the people they aim to protect. There is also the threat that their emotionally charged approach might subvert rational thinking on important topics.

I also agree that not every critic of this woke culture is a bigot or transphobic. The tone of the post that I highlighted earlier (not yours) was definitely wrong. I called it out, and the mods still did not do anything about it because this kind of bigotry and transphobia is still mainstream in most parts of the world. Many people here on this forum hold these hateful views, unfortunately, rather than empathizing with the struggles of their fellow human beings.

At the same time, it is is perhaps the first time in human history that the bullied, oppressed, and those suffering from mental health issues have found a safe space to live in (e.g. in urban cities of Canada), and that there exists a powerful mainstream movement that openly aims to protect their rights to a dignified life and respect. I support this aspect of the movement.

Shaming, hating, and threatening people who may be suffering from mental health challenges (including gender dysphoria) is a despicable thing to do.

It's funny. Science tells us XX and XY chromosomes determine whether you are a male or female.

This Hollywood attention seeking Elliot Page can claim 'IT' thinks it's a male or female, but the science says otherwise.

Eternal damnation to such attention seeking. Couldn't give a flying squat how this person feels, the Chromosomes say otherwise, and to see these dungar Indian doctors tell us otherwise proves why these doctors are dungar in the first place.

Stop ramming this radical/woke nonsense upon the public. You want attention then weep like a dog when no one cares or agrees.

Go home.

These attention seekers should just stay home. There’s bigger issues to worry about than some insecure celebs who want to change sexes as often as their underwear
