Steve Smith will part with close to half his match fee after the International Cricket Council deemed Australia to have committed an over-rate offence on Sunday.

Match referee Ranjan Madugalle imposed the fines after finding that Australia had not completed their bowling innings in the allotted time during the third Gillette ODI between Australia and England.

The hosts were deemed to be two overs short of their target even with time allowances taken into consideration, the ICC said in a statement.

Accordingly, Smith was fined 40 per cent of his match fee and the other 10 Australia players 20 per cent of their match fees.

Smith pleaded guilty to the offence and accepted the sanction, meaning there was no need for a formal hearing.

The ICC's code of conduct states that players are fined 10 per cent of their match fee for every over they fail to bowl in the permitted time, with the captain stung twice that amount.

Should Australia be tardy in bowling their overs a second time in an ODI within the next 12 months with Smith at the helm, it will deemed a second offence and the skipper could face a suspension.

Australia were defeated in the third ODI after England wicketkeeper Jos Buttler struck a tremendous century to fire the visitors to 6-302.


The home side fell 16 runs short at 6-286 with Aaron Finch, Mitch Marsh and Marcus Stoinis all hitting half-centuries in vain.

As a lurker, I used to read on these boards that the one day Australia team did not lose at home, that they were almost invincible etc. Another myth that has been debunked.

Well, they really don't lose a lot of bilateral series at home.

Pakistan won 2-1 in 2002
South Africa won 4-1 in 2009
Sri Lanka won 2-1 in 2010

These are the only other instances of Australia losing bilateral ODI series at home, besides the current one they've lost to England.

It seems as though Australia are not really too concerned about ODIs besides the World Cup, I think. Ashes and BBL are probably prioritised over bilateral ODIs now.

Between the Sri Lanka ODI series in 2010 and the current one against England, there were just 8 bilateral ODI series in Australia in total.

Contrast what Smith said about his dismissal and what our lot would say. "I was given out so I had to get off the field. I wasn't batting very well anyway so it gave someone else a chance."

One of our batsmen would be saying he was doing tremendous after getting to 45 off 66 balls.
