England [369, 226/2d] defeat Windies [197, 129] by 269 runs to win 3rd Test, win series 2-1

Oh dear, Monty was looking set.

This is serious. Only Pope left as a real batter.

Pontiff playing a blinder in these tricky conditions.

A very average offspinner. Only england, and rory burns in particular, have struggled against him.

He is pretty economical and accurate and does the job when conditions are suitable. More importantly, he is a batting all-rounder. I would say he is second most valuable player in the team after Jason Holder.

Pope is batting fluently here , Woakes and Bess are both capable with the bat , WI need to break this partnership here

He compliments Holder , both together adds to team balance.

Holder and Chase both are filling kind of bowlers , who just bowl few overs to rest the main bowlers , they may pick a wicket or two here and there , but they are not penetrative at all.

Holder is a bowling all-rounder though. He averages 26 with bowl, as a bowler roughly similar to Heath Streak and bats at no.8. So, his primary role is bowling while for Chase it's batting.

Sure. He is a fifth bowler and can be used to rotate the pacers and he's reasonably accurate but England seem to play him very poorly.

His bowling level right now is below bowling all-rounders like Heath Streak. He needs to contribute more with the ball to move to that category.

England will win this Test comfortably. This English attack is twice of what was in last Test and 4 days were enough there, it’ll be easier this time.

Not sure why WIN should bowl first here even after the experience of last Test.

I meant in the last three years. If you discard the last match and this one both of which were played on same wickets, he has shown very good improvement with the bowl from where he started.

They made a blunder after blunder. Also only playing three pacers wasn't wise considering they wanted to bowl first.

WI looks like a confused team at the moment.

He is slightly better version of Darren Sammy.

I think there's a ton of rain forecasted.

In last 3 years, he has taken 73 wickets in 20 tests at average of 21 with 6 5-fers. Yeah, much like Darren Sammy.

This is just not the conditions suited to his bowling or else he has been very good in past few years with bowl. He was very successful in India with bowl as well.

This game is more damaging for PAK than WIN😩

WIN has won their one Test to make it a competitive but now PAK has to match WIN, who has brought Butler in form and proved that Dom Bess won’t work against PAK.

And they also haven't tired Ben Stokes by dismissing him early. Neither does it look they will be able to tire Broad, Anderson with this many bowlers in the line up.

Things looking tough for Pak.

why gabriel again.. he was struggling to bowl in the last test match... has serious fitness issues... Chemar Holder a promising youngster should have been selected.. Also rakheem cornwall is struggling to get a wicket here... Alzarri Joseph was dropped after a good 2nd test.... WI doing a PAK like decisions lols..

Similarly , I feel like Sohail khan will have good 1st test, struggle to bowl in the 2nd test but still will be selected for 3rd test where he will break down into pieces.. Naseem shah or Hasnain might be left out not get a game here like chemar holder. And PAK will try out Kashif bhatti in the last test and he will go wicketless...

Pak will win 1st test and lose the other 2 due to poor choice of players is what will happen i guess...

Jason Holder is a good leader and good all rounder , but tactically he is very poor overall. In LO games he has let games drift and fall out of West Indies hands. And what an awful decision to bowl first.

A good leader without a doubt. But don't think Holder is good tactically.

Buttler finally played a genuine, patient and just very good Test match innings!

Hopefully it’s not a flash in the pan.

Both Pope and Buttler got lucky a couple times. Close calls with catches and lbws. Cornwall was also delivering some delicious pies for Buttler to hit for six and Gabriel, the most potent pacer, was struggling with form. Not sure if the English batsmen’s performance is as good as people are making it out to be. Nevertheless, runs under the belt will give both batsmen some confidence heading into the next series.

West Indies bottled it big time after a good start to the match, some bizzare tactics during the final stretch; that too when you remove key batsman and have two under fire batsman at the crease, Buttler and Pope batted superbly in the circumstances all round; the match winning partnership without a doubt.

West Indies is confident of recovering after England gained the initiative on the opening day of the third and final Test, said opener Kraigg Brathwaite as he defended his captain Jason Holder's decision to bowl first at Old Trafford on Friday.

"We've got to start back well and look to limit them as much as possible. We will need to build pressure with a lot of dot balls and stop them scoring boundaries,” Brathwaite told a news conference.

"There is no need to force it but if we keep it tight in the morning session, I believe the pressure will bring some rewards," he added.

England was 258-4 when bad light brought a premature close to play with Ollie Pope not out on 91 and Jos Buttler on 56 after an unbeaten 136-run partnership for the fifth wicket.

The host had been under pressure after losing the prized wickets of skipper Joe Root (17) and talisman Ben Stokes (20) but fought back after tea to take advantage as the bowlers tired.

The decision of Holder to bowl first seemed at odds with dropping seamer Alzarri Joseph and including a second spinner in Rakheem Cromwell as it added pressure on Windies' fast bowlers who already looked fatigued towards the end of the second Test last weekend

There has been a short turnaround time of just three days between the tests in the behind-closed-doors series.

But Brathwaite said West Indies had felt it could make good use of the gloomy conditions the match started under, although it proved unexpectedly sunnier later in the day.

"We had a plan to bowl first because of the moisture in the wicket, we felt as a team that we had a chance to utilise it. They got a good partnership later but I dont think we are out of it,” he told reporters.

"If we come out tomorrow and control the scoring rate, I think well get some wickets."

West Indies, seeking to retain the Wisden Trophy with the series level at 1-1, has the benefit of the second new ball, which it took shortly before the close of play.

Covers coming off at Old Trafford after overnight rain. Fingers crossed for an improved forecast, starting on time and plenty of play today.

game will probably be a draw but windies team selection has been bewildering to say the least. gabriel seems tanked. would have been a perfect opportunity to blood chemar holder

as for ollie pope, gifted technician and always has been. put him in somewhere between 3 and 5 and keep him there

england will need an actual middle order when pakistan come. their bowling will be a lot more resilient than the west indians. abbas wont give us an inch

A shame for Pope, but he couldn’t get going in those 10 minutes — Gabriel and Roach were all over him straight away and deserved to get him. Still, a brilliant contribution.

Woakes gone. Ball moving in sharply.

Seems quite bowler-friendly out there today.

Anderson and Broad will fancy these conditions when they are called upon.

Buttler gone now, for a well-played 67.

This doesn’t bother me too much really. If we can slog our way to 300 then our bowlers will relish this movement through the air.

The truth is that the Pope and Buttler partnership was probably too good and too large for these conditions. It could end up being the matchwinner.

WI has let the tail bat for too long. Bess and Broad definitely have some skills with the bat but I think bowling against tail somehow hasnt been upto the mark here.

I would be tempted to give Cornwall or Chase a ball here. WI pacers started well but havent been able to get the radar right against Broad. May be bit of off spin to the left hander who is going after the bowling can produce something.

Thirteenth test fifty for Broad, or is it the fourteenth? This is how he used to bat before he took that horrible blow in the face. Has his batting confidence returned?

W Indies look exhausted out there.

Looking like a team who are homesick.

Great stuff Broadster. If we can get him back on form as a batter it means we can drop Woakes.

Picking Cornwall as their main spinner only for letting Chase take two wickets. Windies should better persist with four pacers.

Brought spin a bit late in my opinion but, it worked atleast.

Not much spin in comparison to first and second day of the 2nd test.

If not for Broad prat, WI were still in the hunt....i'm guessing this innings will be a crucial factor come the 4th innings...still feel WI can turn it around...not much in the pitch....will be exciting to watch..
