England (421 & 76/3) defeat Sri Lanka (135 & 359) by 7 wickets to win the 1st Test

Well Pakistan is not as bad as people are making it out here. Everyone has received a phanti from NZL at home, lets not be too judgemental here.

We are not as bad as WI, Srl, Bangladesh.

We will not get bowled out for 135 at home ground no chance.

Srl are struggling to find a good replacement for Mahala and Sanga for a long time now. Eventually they will become a good team soon.
For Pakistan, its also the same. Pak has also been a poor test side since the retirement of MisYou, being unable to find their replacements.

Sri Lanka collapse in Galle as England dominate opening day

As many as 12 wickets fell on an eventful opening day in Galle as England went into stumps at 127/2, trailing Sri Lanka by just eight runs, in the first Test of the two-match series.

Sri Lanka were bundled out for 135 – their lowest first-innings total in Galle – after opting to bat, with Dom Bess claiming his second five-for in Test cricket, after Stuart Broad, picked in the XI over Jimmy Anderson, dismantled Sri Lanka's batting line-up.

The England batsmen then made up most of the deficit before the stumps were drawn, despite a difficult start. The visitors lost Dom Sibley in the fifth over of their innings, when Sri Lanka used the DRS to good effect – Sibley was adjudged caught at slip off Lasith Embuldeniya. When Zak Crawley, who scored a double-century in his last Test against Pakistan, followed suit, England seemed in trouble at 17/2.

However, captain Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow absorbed the pressure and counter-attacked, putting on an unbroken 110* to help England go through to stumps primed for a second-day assault. En route that solid partnership, Root brought up his 50th half-century in Test cricket, Bairstow a typically dominant 47*, and Sri Lanka were left to reflect on one of the tougher days they’ve faced in their Galle fortress.

Sri Lanka were dealt an early blow when it emerged their captain, opener Dimuth Karunaratne, was ruled out of the Test with a fractured thumb. Dinesh Chandimal took over the captaincy in his stead, but his team’s batting performance in the first innings has ensured he’ll have a tough outing. Also missing was Suranga Lakmal, who failed to recover from a niggling injury.

The hosts lost their first wicket in as early as the seventh over, when Lahiru Thirimanne fell into Broad’s trap – he had stationed a leg-slip, and sent in a delivery into his ribs, and Thirimanne promptly fended it to the fielder. Two balls later, Broad had another when Kusal Mendis fell to his leg-cutter, feathering an edge to the wicketkeeper Jos Buttler. It was his fourth duck in a row in Tests.

There were a few hopes on Kusal Perera, given his track record for reviving teams in the face of adversity, but when he was dismissed for a 28-ball 20 – he top-edged an attempted reverse-sweep – Sri Lanka were 25/3. It was then that two veteran batsmen, Angelo Mathews and Chandimal, got together to attempt to revive the innings.

It was tough going. Broad had sensed an opening, and Mathews and Chandimal had to be extremely cautious. And they were, putting on a 56-run stand for the fourth wicket, off 113 balls. They had taken the total to 81 when Broad claimed the big wicket of Mathews, who attempted a cut and edged it to slip. When Chandimal followed suit in the next over, Sri Lanka were in dire straits at 81/5.

There was a collapse thereafter. Niroshan Dickwella (12) was dismissed when Sibley took a rather fortunate catch at point off Bess, and four overs later, England struck another blow when Dasun Shanaka, who had scored a hard-fought 23, miscued a slip off Bess and was caught behind.

Dilruwan Perera and Embuldeniya both failed to get off the mark, and while Wanindu Hasaranga’s enterprising 22-ball 19 took Sri Lanka to 135, his dimissal, which helped Bess to the coveted five-wicket haul, ended a difficult innings.

England then ensured they took advantage of that.

This is awesome for India.

England will be flying high after thrashing SL before trip to India. We all know what’s going to happen to them in India.

Thank you SL

That Sri Lankan batting performance was one of the worst you will ever see. Some woeful shots and a total lack of responsibility.

Just saw the highlights and astonished at the rank buffet balls bowled by Bess and still get wickets. There was a stat that said in other circumstances those balls had 0.18% chance of getting a wicket!!!

This was the lowest first innings score ever in that ground

I saw till Lunch on Day 1 - three wickets and probably three worst shots that one can expect in first session of Day 1 - a flicked at leg slip, touched a wide leg-cutter on second ball without any feet movement, and a ..... reverse sweep!!!!!

SRL these days bat in all three formats at same tempo.

He has got enough time now, therefore no excuses, but I think the problem is focus of SRL cricket - they have completely lost their track for the longer game and eventually that'll cost every bit of skills. This team won 2-0 in SAF less than 2 years back and probably facing 3rd 10 wicket or worse loss in a row.

Mickey Arthur is a very poor coach at test level. This is clearly showing. Like their lineup is so pedestrian and it was same with pakistan

Srilanka batted way better in South Africa and that was without there two main batsman Chandimal and Matthews.
Looks like they didn't have proper rest.

Arthur isn’t a good choice for Asian teams. And, he took Srilanka at their rock bottom state. Might improve ODI side, but Test matches are his real Test.

Day 2: 1st Session - England lead by 7 runs

Roooooooot. Whadda playa!

The lad Lawrence looks a handy find as well.

Excellent accumulation, rotation and overall strike rate from this pair.

Do we? Beware hubris. Wouldn’t it be better for India if England turn up with no confidence?

As is they are so far winning a Subcontinent match while missing four first pick players. I’m not reading too much into it, but let us wait and see.

Lawrence has looked good on debut and needs to cash in on life he was given before lunch. very wristy in stroke play.

Excellent knock by Root, england could bat SL out of game with another 2 strong sessions with bat here.

Mickey Arthur has gone nuts, waving his arms and charging off to talk to the third ump.

Lawrence fifty on debut.

Hundred partnership.

Mickey doesn’t understand the Laws, no wonder SL aren’t doing well.

Joe has speeded up since passing his eighteenth century.

Wonder will he exceed Cook’s century total?

150 for Root. Now going at 70/100.

The new ball is being slapped about. SL look psychologically out of it.

Aww, Lawrence is out for 73, he had a ton on debut in his sights.

Question is how much more eng want before sri lanka bats.

I cant see sri lanka making more than 200, innings defeat likely here.

England knows themselves that they can declare now at 320/4 and they will still win.

England knows themselves that they can declare now at 320/4 and they will still win.

They will not declare before 500. SL won't bat that badly twice and England won't risk having to bat last on a Bunsen, even if they have to chase 100.

Looking at England's performance in this match, I feel that they have good chance in India.

Looking at England's performance in this match, I feel that they have good chance in India.

They need stronger spinners. They won in 2012 due to Swann and Panesar. Moeen, Leach and Bess are not in that class.

But Burns, Stokes, Pope, Archer will all come back for India making for pressure for places. I imagine the first test side to be something like:

Burns
Sibley
Crawley
Root (c)
Stokes
Pope or Lawrence
Moeen
Buttler (w)
Broad
Archer
Leach

Stokes and Moeen have good batting records in India, so England will get runs but the difficulty will be in stopping India racing to huge totals.

3 days to win this. Even if we bat on for a while and it rains a bit, there should be enough time to get 10 more wickets. Then either win the 2nd Test or draw on a classic flat Sri Lankan wicket, and it’s the series win in the bag.

Sublime Root, Lawrence continue England's domination in Galle

The day couldn’t have gone any better for the visitors – England asserted their authority, riding on Joe Root’s century to post a lead of 185 against Sri Lanka by stumps on day two in Galle.

It was a near-perfect day for England, in which their captain Root scored his 18th Test hundred, and put on a 173-run stand with debutant Dan Lawrence, who scored an impressive 73 in his maiden Test innings. Sri Lanka toiled throughout the day, but conceded 193 runs for just two wickets, and it could have been a lot more had rain not washed out the entirety of the final session. England had posted a daunting 320/4 by stumps.

Rain had its say in the morning as well, delaying the start of the day by 70 minutes. England, resuming on 127/2, suffered the early blow of losing Jonny Bairstow for 47. Bairstow was drawn forward to a flighted delivery from Lasith Embuldeniya, and his edge was just about pouched by Kusal Mendis in the slips.

Unfortunately for Sri Lanka, that was the last bit of cheer they had for a while. Lawrence partnered Root, and the debutant was immediately at home at the highest level. The manner in which he slog-swept Embuldeniya, shortly before lunch, suggested he was a brave batsman. He was comfortable from the very beginning of his stint, picking up the lengths of the Sri Lankan spinners with apparent ease.

Meanwhile, Root, having gone through 2020 without a century, seemed desperate to put that poor run behind him at the first time of asking. He negated the turn confidently, picked the gaps beautifully, and brought up three figures shortly into the second session, having gone in to lunch at 99. It was already a terrific knock, but Root wasn’t done yet.

The second session visibly deflated Sri Lanka, as Root and Lawrence powered through. England added 114 runs in the middle session, with Sri Lanka managing just the single wicket of Lawrence shortly before the break.

Sri Lanka took the second new ball, and the pitch developed a bit of bite, but Root negated it all, and finished the day just nine runs short of becoming the seventh England batsman to reach 8,000 runs in Test cricket. He is also only 32 runs short of a double-century.

With Jos Buttler, unbeaten on 7, at the other end, Sri Lanka have a huge task ahead of them if they are to keep the visitors at bay.

A few wickets going down, but to be honest I prefer that in these scenarios. It prevents a long drawn-out discussion and glorified net session leading up to the much-debated declaration point, and instead it keeps the scoreboard ticking over and moves the game on.

In the meantime, Root moves on to his double hundred. One of his better innings for sure.

Embarassing from Sri Lanka. Losing by an innings at home vs this mediocre English team.

Broad got out lbw 2 times in the same over and got saved by the review. The umpire is trying to wrap it up loool

Played Root.

A triple-hundred was there for the taking but the mini collapse today and the rain in the third session yesterday cost him.

Nevertheless, one of his finest knocks in Test cricket.

ENG 421
SL 135 & 41/0 (21) CRR: 1.95
Day 3: 2nd Session - Sri Lanka trail by 245 runs

Good start by SL. They should look to post 500 runs on board.

Love watching Sri Lanka bat when they play like this.

Love watching Sri Lanka bat when they play like this.

It will be great if somehow they can continue and make a match of it, even if they end up loosing. But that's so much better from them.

A mini fightback from Sri Lanka. Hope they score a big one and post 200+ lead to chase for England, which will not be easy at all.

But for that to happen, they'll need to cross 500. Not gonna be easy once the floodgates open up.

Wood and broad look the most threatening bowlers.

And root has been the best spinner this innings.

Bess and Leach will leak runs in india

Disciplined batting from SL. They could yet get a lead and make England work hard to win.

Perera gifting his wicket again.

Now Indian fans will hype Sam curran to the moon because of this lucky wicket. He is a cannon fodder bowler in tests

Such an average bowler and player in every format of the game.

Such an average bowler and player in every format of the game.

He's decent in limited overs.

He has literally only performed well against Indiana, that is why Indian fans can't stop praising him while ignoring all his other performances. Also did well in ipl

Situations like is are where England's naff spin bowlers start to become a problem for them.

Cant really blame mickey arthur here. SL just dont players with enough ability or a quality domestic which can hone their skills. Theres only so much Mickey and Grant can do.

Joe Root is a joy to watch when in form. Like Williamson he moves through the gears effortlessly. Led from the front.

Rare fight back shown by the Lankans, despite loosing one wicket to T20 mood of dismissal. Still over 200 overs left in the game and if they can bat for another 3.5 sessions, can win this Test. But, I’m afraid England will make a comeback later today or tomorrow morning with bowling and game might end in 4 days.

I thought Leach would have caused more problems. Bess is not test class currently. They are missing Moeen.

Ok. Bess is rubbish.

It's been decided. Lol

I think he’s about where Crane is. Not up to it currently. But his face fits, like Buttler’s and unlike the superior Foakes.

With Jadeja out, India now has 6 right handers in their top 7 so I don't think Bess will be of much use. If Moeen recovers by then, this will most likely be their bowling attack for the first test at Chennai.

Archer
Broad
Anderson/Wood/Curran
Leach
Moeen (bats in the top 7)
Stokes

Ending the day unscathed is utmost important thing for Srilanka now.

How is the weather forecast in next two days? Can SL save this test match?

Surprised by this post. Its the offies that have troubled us in the past, whether its Moeen,Lyon or even Chase at times

Not any offie. Swann and Lyon are world class and probably the best finger spinners from their respective countries. Moeen troubled us only in England where we try to attack him to overcompensate for the dud batting against their seamers.

Bess will meet the same fate as Dane Peidt, Mehidy Hasan, Chase (averages 137 in India don't know why you took his name) etc..

England aren’t as far away from victory as it may seem. 2-3 quick wickets in the now fast approaching morning session will see them well on the way. That said, Sri Lanka battled impressively hard today and fair dues to them. They are not out of this yet.

Really sad to see Sri Lanka have become so weak now. They havent recovered from the retirement of their greats yet. Look at their team. Not even a single batsman averages 40 in their top 4. :inti
