England (465 & 373/5) cruise to a comfortable 5-wicket win over India (471 & 364) in the opening Test of the series

Could have picked Arshdeep for variety in pace attack if we were going in with 4 pacers. Takes nothing away from those that were picked however. Wishing them the best.

Crucial to start the series strong with the bat.

How many times must I tell you, the day Jaiswal scores a wc final century and a wtc century i will put him >.

Besides why are you even complaining? Current India in odi is around the sane level of strength as 90's Aus. They are just below classic wi and classic 2000's aus in strength.

With their level they will reach multiple finals and win multiple tournaments?

It should be easy to achieve that metric for jaiswal no? Unlike head who did in 2x in a single year 🤣🤣.

It is reasonably good playing XI... Prasidh Krishna is bowling well of late, he always had that extra pace and bounce, only accuracy was missing (which he has improved in recent times). We should not be carried away with only swing (which Arshdeep may or may not bring), a bowler should bowl at all times in a test (with older balls as well), Prasidh Krishna did that in the last match of BGT series (if Bumrah was well, we would have took that match lot closer... Prasidh somehow kept us in that match for brief periods). So its a good thought to persist with him (also he bowled well in last IPL).

Thakur is selected mainly because of his effectiveness & experience in the last England tour (and Nitish not doing much after that century in Australia including IPL). Karun Nair makes it to the side because he has been waiting for long with consistent performances, Sai Sudarshan is a bright prospect, very intelligent player. With Rohit & Kohli both retired it made easy for some deserving players to get into the side... Jurel also deserves a place, we should see if any others don't do well like - KL Rahul OR Sai Sudarshan OR Nair OR even Pant (wicket keeper - Jurel can keep) OR Gill himself (who many people think is not even good enough to make into test side let alone captaincy!)...

Overall a good side... Siraj should be persisted (he has experience and he is a workhorse like Ishant). Jadeja plays (probably) only this format (he was always good in this format! Lethal with ball in home & decent with bat overseas - in fact most times better than top order batsmen + great fielder! So he gives that balance. Lone spinner in SENA instead of going with Kuldeep or others which also imbalances our batting)
 
Carse is a first change bowler not an opening bowler, better option would have been to open with Stokes.

Honestly England have messed up with the bowling lineup hopefully it doesn't come back to bite them
 
I think Kohli retired from Test Cricket giving a clear indication/instruction/condition to the management that Gill has to be his official successor (King ----> Prince ;) ) Kohli has affection towards Gill from so long (like has/had with Rahul, Rohit, etc). So Gill has kind of cemented his place in the side (one easy way to cement your place in the side - regardless of performance is "becoming captain". We have seen that over the years... Azharuddin, Dhoni, Kohli, etc...)
 
its a damn shame that indian fans dont have confidence in Jaiswal scoring a century in wtc final and wc 2023.

Rohit sharma is literally a muhammad hafeez level test batsman hailed as test legend by fans around the world.
 
Bazball vs Normal (Conventional Test) Ball tactics, lets see which wins... I think the key is with Indian bowlers how they bowl (need to keep it straight and maintain the length)

This is very pedestrian bowling.

When England first started Bazball I remember they said it was their preference to chase in tests. They even thumped India chasing close to 400.

That was down to novelty of Bazball and Bairstow purple patch....

I wonder if they genuinely thought there was something in the pitch or if they were just hoping to bat last and back themselves to chase big.
 
Looking at England's team condition right now. I think Pakistan have a decent chance of beating them away. Provided they pick the right players.

The likes of Abbas, Shaheen, Hasan, Mir, Khurram and Naseem (to an extent) are suited for these conditions.

England opting for Bowl first has nothing to with bazball but ground history.

All last 6 test here won by batting 2nd team . Gill said same things during the Toss that india would have bowl first.

In England pitch becomes easier to bat as game progress .

At this ground 3rd innings AVG score is higher than 1st innings

What a poor review. That look way down leg in real time. If not anything they should taken the batsman's movement into account. Jaiswal was way down leg.
 
Even if we lost BGT, I'll always prefer watching us play Test cricket in Australia and elsewhere in the Southern Hemisphere than England.
 
Very disappointed with Englands bowling Group. No consistency, no control. On this showing, I'd take 42 year old Sir Jimmy over Woakes any day.

England found 1.8 degrees of swing upfront. But only 35 % of deliveries have been on a good line and length , 2nd lowest for an English home attack since 2019.

Nothing to do with it being a batting day. More about average bowling and some good batting by KL

Toss decision was right.
 
So far it looks like first test in last BGT Series... Openers batting superbly (this time in the first innings), laying the foundation making it easier for the team to put opposition under pressure... But it is important this time that Indians maintain the same intensity in all the matches and in all the phases of the game!

Hate watching us play in NZ... The pitches are too fluctuating and also ground shapes are odd... In England (apart from weather) everything else is well balanced...

These are the kind of openings Rahul is guilty of providing to opposition especially in away tests.

Really poor from him and we are almost at lunch

Nowadays I am more eager to watch Indian bowlers , Jasprit Bumrah should do well here, there is some help on this pitch.

Yes he is not smart in reading the situation of the game (lunch around the corner), he should have been cautious... And then he went ultra-defensive in that World Cup Finals (even throwing away his wicket on that day would have not done much harm to the team)

Sai Sudarshan sees the difference between IPL & Test Cricket... Hopefully he has forgotten about the orange caps, red caps he got in IPL... Otherwise it is difficult to make a career in Test Cricket! (we experimented with SKY and he failed spectacularly)

What feel? He couldnt have asked for a better platform to launch his test career but he threw it away. May be he was nervous, hope he'll better outing in our second dig

Shubman Gill taking advantage of his captaincy and Kohli's retirement by grabbing the number 4 spot. Shreyas Iyer/KL Rahul should've been the long term number 4.

That's normal for England. First hour or so is always challenging. Once you overcome that, then it's quid in.

India have gifted 2 wickets here. However, I do agree, the bowling has been substandard for test match standards

That's not normal for England. That's well higher than average.
 
Not enjoying the match as much as sa vs australia wtc final, ball was talking. This is snoozefest.
 
As long as KL and Jadeja are selected, Ind team will struggle. Defensive team this from Ind. No proper spinner ? No Kuldeep ? And Thakur instead of Nitish Reddy ? Hope Eng takes Thakur to the cleaners and Ind moves on. Prasidh ?? Again Eng will go after him.. Arshdeep would have been much better. 4 pacers and no genuine spinner ?? Gill was all talk yesteray - we need 20 wickets to win blah blah and we will not weaken the bowling to protect the batters. And promptly goes ahead and does that. Timid mentality wont win you games .

Correction. "Was" a top player in tests. He has been poor in tests for close to 5 yrs. 5 long yrs ! Nobody else would have gotten a longer rope. And in Aus, he was an embarassment falling edging to slips all 9 times. All 9 times.. Good for Ind cricket he retired

Kohli used to be a top test player but that was way back in 2019. He has been a nothing test player for close to 6 years. Australia dropped Labu despite having better stats than Kohli in last 2 years.
 
Good little confidence boosting innings from Gill. Now keep going and don't fall like that loser Rahul.

After him being used in middle order in LOIs, he should never have been asked to open in tests... He is totally confused about his batting approach across formats... Jaiswal is at least assured that he wants to open in tests, no matter even if he can't find place in LOIs... That is called confidence... KL Rahul had that opportunity but he messed up everything... He should have never agreed to bat down the order in LOIs if he wanted to excel in Tests... (either bat in the top order or get dropped. I thought he was discarded in tests when he got chance in middle order for LOIs, but he became test opener again through back door). Even today there is a vacant spot for opener in Indian Test Lineup, but KL Rahul cannot grab it properly... Another guy can see this opportunity and own it (like Jaiwal did...) with better consistency, I hope it happens soon...
 
I knew Gill would bloom at no 4. Gill is a master of playing grounded shots, no 3 and opening just didnt suit him.
 
Gill has all the shots, its just about temperament. He has backfoot game (which was absent with Kohli). People couldn't see this weakness with Kohli when he was in prime, he was batting so well on the front foot that backfoot was not needed at all... Kohli should have modified his game in the mid-way (during 2016 or so), if so he would have extended his test career a bit more... Now he knows he can't survive in modern tests (no flat pitches anywhere in the world for tests except Pakistan).
 
Sai Sudarshan must kick himself really hard. He won't got better conditions to get his eye in and score a big one in his debut test innings.

As for Rahul, well he is Rahul, the hopeless.
