Johnny bairstow has made some good technical changes too. He's now playing the ball late and looks to hit the ball coming in towards leg rather than mid off

Accurate. I’d say 60/40 India now, but a wicket will swing that.

Big drop off in quality from opening bowlers and first change. Also jadeja outside India is cannon fodder as a bowler. But absolutely brilliant from the England boys. COME ON ENGLAND

Even 2 wickets now means England still on top as they have knocked off the runs like a Sunday afternoon village match.
 
Bairstow might have technical issues but he is unarguably in the form of his life so cant do anything wrong

IPL is overrated. All T20 leagues are overrated. Just junk cricket for casual fans.

IPL is mostly successful due to overseas players.

The thing is it takes only 2 wickets to finish off England. Leach, Anderson and even broad now are proper tail enders.

That said, that was authoritative batting from these 2. Bairstow simply invokes fear into the bowlers now. It's a bad idea targeting him with short ball because he will absolutely murder it to no end.

This break (end of day's play) has come at a good time. Otherwise England would have strolled past the target in another hour.

The way they're batting, England could've easily chased 450-odd if that's the target we had given them.

I think we've batted and bowled as well as that momentum would have carried us back then. The difference is, there is no way the England of a year back would have batted as easily as they did today in a steep runchase.
 
23 overs till the second new ball is available. Unless Bhumra, Shami, Siraj can get the old ball to do something special, England will either chase down the remaining runs by the 80th over or reduce the target significantly to make the second new ball pointless.
 
India needed stumps. Another 15-20 overs tonight and this one would have been done. India can come back and get over the line tomorrow if they take some early ones.

But yes, I think India would have won the fifth test had they stayed last year. No way would England even conceptualise chasing down 380 then.

England are 119 runs away from pulling off their highest-ever successful run chase in Test cricket, with seven wickets remaining, setting up a fascinating finale to the rescheduled fifth LV= Insurance Test against India at Edgbaston.

The red-hot Joe Root (76no) and Jonny Bairstow (73no) remain, both bringing up majestic half centuries late on the fourth evening, helping the hosts recover from a desperate spell either side of tea that saw them lose three wickets for two runs in 16 deliveries.

Prior to that, Alex Lees (56) and Zak Crawley (46) had got the innings off to a sensational start as they took less than 20 overs to put on a century stand, with Lees particularly impressive as he raced to a 44-ball fifty, his second in Tests.

Crawley, though not yet back to his silky shot-making best, displayed far better judgement outside his off stump, leaving superbly well, meaning the irony of his eventual dismissal - bowled by Jasprit Bumrah (2-54) without playing a shot - will not be lost on him.

The Indian fans, so silenced by the batting fireworks in the afternoon session, suddenly found their voice, and they erupted further when Ollie Pope (0) nicked off to Bumrah's first ball back after tea, with Lees following soon afterwards courtesy of a calamitous run out.

India claim the wicket of Alex Lees after a massive mix-up between him and Joe Root between the wickets.

Root, who will have felt some guilt for his role in Lees' dismissal - having called his disorientated partner through while he was struggling to locate the ball off his inside edge - more than made amends, steering England safely to stumps at 259-3 without further loss.

With the series on the line - the visitors lead 2-1 following the first four Tests held last summer - it all makes for an incredible finish to the Test match on Tuesday. Watch it live on Sky Sports Cricket from 10.30am, with build-up from 9.45am.

Earlier in the day, India - resuming their second innings on 125-3, with a 257-run lead - had set their sights on batting long into the afternoon to firmly take the game away from their hosts, but instead were guilty of giving away their wickets.

Cheteshwar Pujara (66), who had batted so patiently the previous evening, was the first to fall, slapping a harmless short, wide ball from Stuart Broad (2-58) to Lees at point.

Shreyas Iyer (19) followed, again looking uncomfortable against the short ball as he perished pulling a Matthew Potts (2-50) bumper straight to James Anderson stationed at midwicket.

Rishabh Pant (57), dropped on 45 by Crawley off Broad - a difficult chance diving low to his left - went through to a 10th Test fifty, but was a more subdued version of himself than the swashbuckling incarnation that fired 149 in the first innings. It was, however, one such extravagant shot that ultimately brought his downfall as he reverse-swept Jack Leach (1-28) straight to Root at slip, who showed remarkable reflexes to claim the catch.

Shardul Thakur (4) was also bounced out by Potts, having been disturbed by a blow to the helmet from the Durham fast bowler earlier in his spell. England's short-ball ploy that had been hammered to all parts in the first innings - Broad taken for a Test-record 35 runs in one over - was this time paying off.

Mohammed Shami (13) swatted away a couple of boundaries, but he and Bumrah (7) holed out when hooking Ben Stokes (4-33), either side of the England skipper bowling Ravindra Jadeja (23) to wrap up the innings soon after lunch.

It left England with a record chase of 378, but with Lees charging down the wicket Stokes-style to the Indian seamers and whacking spinner Jadeja (0-53) quickly out of the attack following just a four-over opening spell, it looked again like England would make light work of another stiff target this summer.

Lees fired eight boundaries to race to a 44-ball fifty, while the watchful Crawley eventually found some fluency with a couple of crisp drives through the covers as the hundred partnership came up in a flash.

India, rattled, finally found a breakthrough shortly before tea, Bumrah getting one to jag back in sharply off a length to Crawley, who shouldered arms one time too many and ruefully looked to the heavens as his off stump was knocked back.

Jasprit Bumrah finally gets the breakthrough for India, bowling out Zak Crawley for 46.

Pope dug out a brutal yorker first ball, but then had another peach of a delivery with his name on it as the evening session got underway and he couldn't help but feather an edge through to Pant.

With a now raucous Indian support in full voice, England swiftly lost another, the crowd noise perhaps even a contributing factor to the miscommunication between Root and Lees that resulted in the latter being run out.

Bairstow joined Root in the middle but, rather than immediately press on the accelerator as has often, and so successfully, been his way this summer, the pair got their eye in and absorbed the pressure before countering superbly late in the day to demoralise both their opponents in the field and their now hushed fans.

Root and Bairstow reached fine half centuries off 71 and 75 balls, respectively, putting on an unbroken 150-run partnership that could well prove key to England securing a stunning final-day victory and squaring the series.

The selection of Siraj seems to have backfired. He had a very ordinary IPL and was not in form. He has wilted under pressure here. Even Shami barring the odd 1-3 good deliveries overall in the test match has had a poor game.

Eng should win from here unless they play poorly. As long as one of these two stay for 20 overs or so, Eng should be easily winning this.

Look at his economy rate. He has leaked runs in the second innings which will prove to be vital in the end. He had a poor IPL as well.

also, ipl has nothing to do with this...shreyas iyer captained ipl...here he doesnt even deserve to be in the team

Shastri: India could have batted England out of the game

While there was delight in the England ranks following their fightback, India will be left to consider whether they got their tactics wrong with both bat and ball.

Former India head coach Ravi Shastri, who was in charge of India for the first four games of the series last summer before stepping down in November, was critical of how the tourists batted on day four.

"I think (it was) disappointing, to say the least, because they could have batted England out of this contest," said Shastri, who is part of the Sky Sports Cricket team at Edgbaston.

"They needed to bat two sessions and I thought they were defensive, they were timid today, especially after lunch.

"Even after they had lost those wickets, they could have taken some chances. Runs were important at that stage of the game and I thought they just went into a shell, lost those wickets too quickly, and gave enough time for England to bat today."
 
Pietersen: Bumrah got tactics wrong

Former England captain Kevin Pietersen was disappointed at the tactics employed by India's stand-in captain Jasprit Bumrah, who was given the role for this game after Rohit Sharma tested positive for Covid-19.

Pietersen felt Root and Bairstow were faced with overly defensive fields throughout their innings, which allowed them to rotate strike far too easily.

"I don't think Bumrah got his tactics right today at all, and I say that with the greatest deal of respect," Pietersen said.

A look back at the stand-out moments from day four of the fifth Test between England and India at Edgbaston.

"There is no way with a reverse swinging ball that he should make it that easy for the batter, because the batter is trying so hard to decipher which way that ball is swinging.

"When it's reverse swinging at 90mph, the nicest place to bat is at the non-strikers end, and the ability to get to the non-strikers end as easily as they did this afternoon, it's too easy."

Pietersen urged Bumrah to take a different approach on Tuesday morning, when England will attempt to seal victory.

"They had long off and long on, and that was pure madness. For half an hour that was pure madness. Even for the last 15-20 minutes of the day's play, pull them right in, say 'Jonny, if you're good enough to hit me over the head, please do it.'"

I tell ya I love seeing India being hammered in front of their fans who sit their with their heads bowed. That was great batting by England today but for a needless and silly run out they would have been even closer to victory.

No the lads just need to keep their cool tomorrow and we're home. Get in there, England!
 
It'll never cease to amaze me how India have all the money, power and resources yet consistently play so gutlessly at international level. How are we even discussing an English win tomorrow?
 
Try the next big Indian fast bowler Umran Malik or whatever they call him! Like the rest his career will be over before it starts!. We have seen so many next great Indian fast bowlers who just don't deliver when it matters. This Umran will be crap as well at test level just like the rest of them.

How can I be beganna on a Pak website??:hasan. I will carry on once the English put India in their place tomorrow. After that there are the T20's and ODI'S. Whatever yard it maybe as long as India lose all is well:qdkcheeky
 
Before play started on Day 4 of the ongoing Edgbaston Test against England, it was India who were on top and the were expecting to set a big target for England. However, some "ordinary" shots brought about the dismissals of Indian batters, and the visitors were bundled out for 245 with only Cheteshwar Pujara and Rishabh Pant going past the 50-run mark. In the end, England were set a target of 368 and the hosts reached 259/3 at stumps on Day 4 with Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow unbeaten on 76 and 72, respectively.

It is safe to say that England are favourites to win the match now.

India batting coach Vikram Rathour spoke to reporters after stumps on Day 4 during a press conference and he termed the batting performance of his side as "ordinary".

"I'll agree that we had a pretty ordinary day as far as batting is concerned. We were ahead in the game. We were in a position where we really could've batted them out of the game. Unfortunately, it didn't happen. A lot of them got starts but really couldn't convert. We were expecting one of them to play a big knock and have a big partnership but unfortunately, it didn't happen like that," Rathour said.

"Two wickets in the morning early and again the game will open up. We know that, we understand the game, it is a big target still. It's still more than 100 runs. We take two wickets early and the game can still open up. The kind of bowling Shami and Bumrah are doing, it's not beyond them that they get one wicket, then one, two, three can fall. And that can bring us back in the game," he added.

England used the short-ball tactic to perfection against the Indian batters in the second innings and Shreyas Iyer fell prey to the tactic once again. Shreyas departed after scoring 19 off 26 balls.

"Yes, they used a short-ball plan against us in the field. We had to show a little better, not intent, but strategy. We could've handled it slightly differently. People tried to play shots but didn't really convert or execute them well enough. They got out to that. We will have to rethink how we handle that next time in a similar situation, against similar bowlers who keep similar fields. We will need to have a better strategy against them," said Rathour.

"Of course, at this level you expect people to bowl short against us, and especially against the Indian team, people have been using the short ball for quite some time. People have their own ways of handling that. As a batter, you have your own way to deal with that. We don't really say you have to do this or do that. As a batter, you need to decide, according to your game, what suits you in that situation and in those conditions. Unfortunately, today we couldn't really execute whatever plans we had," he added.
