"England don't lose home Tests in May. It's not doing a great deal for Bayliss as coach" : M Vaughan

England's difficult second day in the first Test against Pakistan is a sign they "need coaching", according to former captain Michael Vaughan.

Pakistan reached 350-8 at Lord's, a lead of 166 over England, who were bowled out for 184 on the first day.

England did not win any of their seven Tests in Australia and New Zealand over the winter.

Vaughan said: "England don't lose home Tests in May. It's not doing a great deal for Trevor Bayliss as coach."

England have only lost three home Tests that have begun in May, the last of which was to New Zealand in 2015, before Bayliss took charge.

Under the Australian, England have not lost a home Test series, but their wretched winter was part of a 13-match winless streak away from home.

At Lord's their collapse on Thursday featured a string of poor shots, while their efforts to dismiss an obdurate Pakistan batting line-up have been hampered by five dropped catches.

"England don't have any kind of foundation with batting, bowling and fielding - it's been a mismatch," Vaughan, who led England to victory in the 2005 Ashes, told Test Match Special.

"Throughout this Test match, there are so many things that have not looked right."

A feature of England's day on Friday was a number of players fielding in unusual positions. The slip cordon changed regularly, while captain Joe Root and his predecessor Alastair Cook both fielded under the helmet at short leg.

"When a side is easy to watch and it's a smooth operation, it is not because they are having great days all the time, but you see people in the same positions," said Vaughan.

"When you see too much inter-changing with the field positions, particularly in key areas, it makes England look like a side that needs oiling."

England wicketkeeper Jonny Bairstow, however, dismissed any suggestion that players moving from their regular positions was a problem.

"It's good to have people to be able to field in different positions," he said. "You can look into as much as you wish and make up whatever ideas you want about who fields where."

Bairstow, who invited journalists to join England's fielding practice, insisted that his team can get back into the Test, despite being so far in arrears.

"We're definitely still in it," he said. "If in our second innings we can gain parity with their first-innings score, we have the opportunity to bowl them out for 180. There's no reason why we can't.

"We've still got three days left. Pakistan have batted well, but days three and four are potentially the best time to bat on this wicket. By no means are we out of this game."

Vaughan, though, believes only the weather can save England from here.

"I don't think they can save this, unless the rain comes," he said. "You look at the history of Test match cricket and very rarely do you save it from here.

"Pakistan will bowl better than England have bowled. England created chances but didn't take them. We've seen one or two keep low, so it's not going to easy for the England batsmen."

Pakistan batsman Azhar Ali, who began his press conference by shaking hands with the assembled media, agreed that his side are in the ascendancy.

"We have got in a good position now," he said. "But it's a long way to go and a Test win never comes easy. We know we still have to play good cricket."

So just a day ago he was on Instagram playing golf and telling us that England will win 2-0!

Also a commendable shout out should go to sarfaraz who said England look short on confidence.

Bayliss hasn’t had much success with the test squad. Plus I am not sure how it works if he has said he doesn’t plan to extend his contract when it expires. Where’s the accountability or incentive to improve in a situation like that. England don’t look like a team at the moment.....in tests.

They look like the away team first two days rusty with the bat ball and in the field like they've landed a week before and playing with no practise.
Pakistan have looked more prepared all round and its showing but things change quickly in cricket however the coach should take some blame for the showing so far.

Due to t20 leagues test cricketers are now millionaires to make them team players who really want it like newcomers will be more difficult for coaches.

Two extraordinary days of Test cricket.

Pakistan have completely outplayed England and I don’t see that changing for the remainder of this match at least. I would not be surprised to see Pakistan wrap up a thumping win on Day 3.

It seems that we have again arrived at one of those infamous historical moments - it happens at least once or twice every decade - wherein the England cricket team only has three problems: they can’t bat, they can’t bowl, and they can’t field.

The pronounced lack of engagement from the grossly overpaid former estate agent Trevor Bayliss disgusts me to be honest. There is no way that he spends anywhere near enough time in England to be good at his job - just look at his tan!! The man has become reminiscent of an old unused Christmas ham that has slowly rotted at the back of the pantry. Before the start of the winter season (and probably long before that), he really does need to go.

So do you think that the people that selected Bayliss to be coach should be given the responsibility to pick another coach.

That’s debatable, Bayliss was picked by Strauss who is taking a minimum 3-month break for compassionate reasons, but people often never come back after such breaks. Andy Flower is covering for Strauss’s position and perhaps he needs to weigh in RE Bayliss’s replacement.

Bayliss has done great things for the ODI squad but I think I would have stuck with Farbrace for the tests.

England look rusty and possibly provide a young Pakistan side which has prepared well their best chance to walk away with a series win. England will use this experience to pull themselves up and the India series will be better for them.

Should give England some hope.

Has he really though? Or is it someone who was at the right place at the right time. I might be remembering incorrectly, but England's ODI resurgence began when they played NZ in 2015. Wasn't Bayliss appointied after that series?

Every time I hear him speak, he doesn't seem very engaged with the dressing room. A stark contrast to Mickey Arthur. Eoin Morgan seems to be the man behind the white ball success.

Regarding that series, Farbrace was in temporary charge. But if we are blaming Bayliss for England’s test failure we should give him credit for the ODI resurgence.

As for Morgs maybe he should be in the tests as captain. He’s more aggressive and focussed than Root and he never really got a chance as a test batter.
