England Lions announce squad for tour of UAE

The England Lions squad for the tour of the UAE has been named. The team will take part in one four-day 'Test' versus Pakistan A, as well as five A team 'ODIs' and two A Team 'IT20s' against the same opposition.

Kent's Sam Billings - fresh from captaining his county to promotion in the Specsavers County Championship - is named in the four-day squad, while there are also call-ups for Surrey's Jason Roy and Durham's Mark Wood.

Worcestershire's Josh Tongue has been named as part of the four-day squad, subject to medical clearance following an injury he picked up in the current round of Specsavers County Championship games.

Billings, Roy, Tongue and Amar Virdi will swap out ahead of the white-ball leg of the tour, to be replaced by Alex Davies, Lewis Gregory, Sam Hain and Saqib Mahmood.

Jason Roy said he has ambitions to play Test cricket for England, ahead of England Lions' tour to United Arab Emirates in November.

The England ODI batsman will be part of a strong squad including Mark Wood and Sam Billings that will play in a four-day match against Pakistan A.

Speaking to Ian Ward on Sky Sports, Roy said it was a chance for him to play in the longer format of the game having made just two appearances in the County Championship for Surrey this summer.

"It has always been an ambition and dream of mine to play Test cricket but I have just got to bide my time and wait in the wings and see what happens," he said.

"(Going to Dubai) is a good opportunity to get some red-ball stuff under my belt in case that call comes. It is good to work with Graham Thorpe as well.

"I think it is just a case of fine tuning, my defensive game is in order, that is not an issue. I do not want to change too much from my white-ball to red-ball.

"I didn't change a huge amount (when playing in the Championship), maybe just the mindset where I was a lot more relaxed and not too worried about going gung-ho."

England and Surrey's Ollie Pope will join the Lions for their tour against Pakistan A in the UAE.

The 20-year-old, who is currently in England's Test squad touring Sri Lanka, will leave the senior party on day one of the second Test due to start on Wednesday in Kandy.

The right-handed batsman will be available for the unofficial Test against Pakistan A starting on November 18 in Dubai and the five unofficial ODIs and two IT20s. The Lions return to England on December 9.

"It is important that Ollie is playing and the selection panel felt that to aid his development the best course of action is for to him to go and play for the Lions in a competitive series against Pakistan A," said England head coach Trevor Bayliss

"Ollie needs some game time before the West Indies Test tour early next year and will get more out of playing competitively for the Lions rather than spending the next three weeks in Sri Lanka on the sidelines. He will get the opportunity of playing up to eight matches across all formats in the UAE."

Craig Overton Leaves Lions Tour With Back Injury

England Lions and Somerset seamer Craig Overton has returned home from the Lions tour of the UAE after scans revealed he'd sustained an injury to his lower back.

Overton, 24, made his Test debut on last year's Ashes tour and was one of four Somerset players in the England Lions squad, alongside his brother Jamie, Lewis Gregory and Dom Bess.

The England Lions medical team said: "Craig developed low back pain whilst bowling in training and scans subsequently revealed that he has sustained a disc injury.

"In collaboration with Somerset, the decision has been made for Craig to return to the UK for rehabilitation."

Overton will not be replaced in the Lions squad, who get their tour underway with a four-day match against Pakistan A on November 18.
