England name Men's Test squad for 2021-22 Ashes Tour

England Men's Head Coach Chris Silverwood has named a 17-player squad for the Ashes tour of Australia starting in November.

All 17 players have been capped at Test level and is the strongest available squad selected by Silverwood. Ten of the 17 will be touring Australia in an Ashes series for the first time, including vice-captain Jos Buttler.

England Men's Test Squad - Ashes Tour of Australia 2021-22:

Joe Root (Yorkshire) Captain
James Anderson (Lancashire)
Jonathan Bairstow (Yorkshire)
Dom Bess (Yorkshire)
Stuart Broad (Nottinghamshire)
Rory Burns (Surrey)
Jos Buttler (Lancashire)
Zak Crawley (Kent)
Haseeb Hameed (Nottinghamshire)
Dan Lawrence (Essex)
Jack Leach (Somerset)
Dawid Malan (Yorkshire)
Craig Overton (Somerset)
Ollie Pope (Surrey)
Ollie Robinson (Sussex)
Chris Woakes (Warwickshire)
Mark Wood (Durham)

Nottinghamshire seamer Stuart Broad, who is to embark on his fourth Ashes tour, is making excellent progress from his torn right calf sustained in the summer during the Test series against India. Next week, he is set to return to bowling at The ECB Performance Centre in Loughborough, where the Ashes and Lions squads will prepare for the Australia tour.

Surrey all-rounder Sam Curran was not considered for selection after a second scan has confirmed that he has a stress fracture in his lower back. More detail regarding his management and likely return will follow after further specialist consultation.

Durham's Ben Stokes was not available for selection and continues to take an indefinite break from all cricket to prioritise his mental wellbeing and rehabilitation from his injured left index finger.

As confirmed on Friday, the Ashes tour is subject to several critical conditions being met by Cricket Australia before the team travels in November. However, positive ongoing discussions continue, and it is hoped matters will be resolved in due course.

Commenting on the squad, England Men's Head Coach Chris Silverwood, said:

"A tour of Australia is the pinnacle as an England Test cricketer. I am delighted that all of our available players have committed to the tour. We are looking forward to touring and enjoying the experience of this historic series.

"This is why we play and coach to be involved in iconic series like this. More than half of our squad haven't featured in an Ashes tour before, which means we will be fresh and looking to embrace the cricket and the excitement of touring one of the best places in the world.

"I believe we have selected a well-balanced squad with options in all areas and a blend of youth and experience. There is real competition for places and a genuine desire to work hard and compete, aiming to create some history.

"We are under no illusions about how difficult the task is going to be. Australia have been strong at home in the past, and there is an expectation on them to win this series. However, from our point of view, there is genuine excitement and belief that we can do something special.

"Both teams are in similar positions in the Test world rankings. For that reason, it should be a compelling series. We can enjoy the build-up to the tour, get out there, and prepare well ahead of the first Test in Brisbane.

"Having the Lions with the Ashes squad will be integral to our build-up. The extended group of players will be with us before the first Test. We will play two competitive warm-up games amongst both squads to give us the match practice we need as part of our build-up. It's an excellent opportunity to connect the Lions into the England environment and gain a good understanding of what is required to play at the highest level."

The Lions party for the Australian training camp will be announced in due course.

England's Test specialists and the Lions squad are set to depart, subject to conditions being granted, on Thursday 4 November.

Players selected, who are part of England's ICC Men's T20 World Cup in the United Arab Emirates, will join the tour after their tournament commitments.

Dates and venues for England’s warm-up matches against the Lions will be confirmed and released by Cricket Australia in due course. There will be a three-day and a four-day match planned.

England making the same selection errors time after time for a trip to Australia, none of those fast bowlers other than Mark Wood have a hope of troubling the Australian batsmen on those flat drop-in wickets.

I'd go olly stone for overton.
He's quick and skiddy and would offer a diffeent dimension.
Aussie batsmen are not gonna loose sleep over eng spinners. Once they get past the 30 overs, they can milk these bowlers on hard true aus wickets.
dont see grumpy jim and broad prat playing all five tests.
Robinson is a real star, maybe he and olly pope will be the main men in this series.

3-1 to Australia. England at some point will gel with bat and ball (as they did against India) and win one of the Tests. There will also be a draw in there somewhere. But the other three Tests will be a rollover. England will go down by an innings in at least one of the matches. Steve Smith, as he usually does against us, will click big time again.

It will be easy for Australia to dominate this team.

I'd give Pakistan a good chance of rolling over this England team on a good day.

No quality spinner, a bunch of medium pacers, nothing really unique.

The best chance is to hope there's some overcast conditions, otherwise, it will be a difficult tour for England.

Australia to win 5-0 unless weather intervenes. One of the worst touring sides England has ever put out.

Burns
Hameed
Malan
Root (C)
Pope
Butler (wk)
Woakes
Robinson
Wood
Broad/Anderson
Leach

Best possible XI for them now. Absence of Moeen/Stokes has messed up their balance completely. No matter what they do, they'll either be a bowler or a batter short.

You don't need pace and bounce to succeed in Australia. That just plays into the strengths of the Australian batsmen. Indian pace attack via the Bharat Arun off, middle stump ruthless non stop bowling with a packed leg side field exposed this beautifully by squeezing the run rate. England need to dry up the runs and the wickets will follow

That conservatism streak continues with the test team which is so unlike their limited format thinking (Root effect?). Big mistake to leave out their best attacking spin option in Parkinson. I’d have Vince in there too

5:0 Australia. England are going to get a walloping.

Broad & Anderson will be competitive if they get some nice weather in the first couple of tests but slowly get bowled into the ground. Then become ineffective. Then get cranky & blame everyone else again.

I don't know why Dom Bess is there. He's fodder. Leach has proven he can survive at Test level and his economy is decent. They lack a hostile pacer to clear tailenders out (& turn the lower order into tailenders) so should have backed their leggy. Very, very handy at clearing a tail out - best option to do so if you don't have raw pace.

Concur.

In Stone’s absence I would have gone for Mahmood as a pace option.

But you see how it will go. Anderson and Broad get the new ball for two tests. If Wood plays he is first change. Australia go up 0-2 before Silverwood realises the plan doesn’t work.

I would go with Wood and Robbo with the new ball, supported by Broad. Keep Anderson wrapped up until Adelaide. He can’t come back in the second innings these days, and that was on English seamers.

The only glimmer of hope for England is that Australia have not played many Test matches in the last couple of years and could be feeling a bit undercooked. But knowing the Aussies they will turn up and beat us anyway. England are very likely to get whammed on this tour.

With Archer missing, Stone or Mahmood would have been good options to take. Also Zak Crawley back in the side, doesn't fill me with hope either.

What's with Mahmood being left out. Last I saw of him he was doing well in the ODI's vs Pakistan, regularly among the wickets. Only seen as an ODI bowler? Or the old Asian players finding it hard to get picked.

Not really investing much in this ashes series, get the feeling that england will pull out at some stage. This series wont be about the cricket it will be about bubbles and covid and I think england are going to complain a lot.

Well Haseeb is in.

It’s just ECB playing safe as usual. Sticking with what sort-of works instead of taking a risk.

I can see Robbo doing well as he is a high action hit the deck sort like Hazlewood, but the other medium pacers will just get milked. They have to draw a line under the Anderson-Broad era and move on.

ngland is "desperate" to go to Australia for its five-Test Ashes series later this year, all-rounder Chris Woakes said, despite some players having expressed concerns about COVID-19 protocols for the tour.

Woakes was named in England's 17-member squad for the series that begins in Brisbane on December 8 after the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) confirmed the tour subject to critical conditions being met before they travel.

Cricket Australia (CA), the ECB and Australian authorities have been negotiating for months over touring conditions in a country where international arrivals must isolate in quarantine hotels for 14 days, regardless of their COVID-19 vaccination status.

"There's no player that does not want to be part of the Ashes," Woakes told the BBC.

"Behind the scenes there are still things being ironed out between all sorts of levels. I think the players are relatively relaxed and guys are desperate to go. But we want to be under the best sort of conditions possible so we can still live our lives outside of cricket."
England captain Joe Root previously expressed doubts about the tour due to "bubble fatigue" while Jos Buttler had said he might skip the series.

"Until you have been in that situation and done it over and over again, the novelty wears off," Woakes said.

"Some people get it, some people don't, and that is fine -- everyone is entitled to their view. But until you have been in it and experienced it over again, it is hard to have a say on it," he added.

They have not got the bowlers to keep up pressure like the Indians did.

You have accurate bowlers - Ollie, Jimmy and Broad are as accurate as they come. Just not quick enough. Even last year, our bowlers were effective in spells when they were above 135 kph in speed . Whenever siraj started bowling slower than that in a spell, he got taken apart. And no, Ollie is more medium fast whereas Hazlewwod is fast medium and is around 5ks quicker.

Also, our spinners bowled brilliantly and backed the seamers up . Leach has to bowl extremely accurately and exploit any dampness, roughs etc. , vary his pace and make his overs count.

I rate Robbo, but old man Broad won’t have much gas left and we already know Anderson can’t come back in the second innings any more, even on green seamers.

I bet Bess plays ahead of Leach. His face fits.

So Ben “I am a quitter” Stokes is not available for the Ashes either?

Why doesn’t he simply retire and have ECB move on from good?

This looks like a super weak squad. England would be happy to avoid a whitewash.

The only saving grace is that Australia will still be led by the poster boy of mediocrity, Tim Paine.

Dude, that's harsh. Mental fitness is even more important than physical fitness. Hes England's most clutch player and was the difference between 2-2 and 4-0 to the Aussies in the last Ashes.

Hr should be in the best condition possible before he plays for England again.

Mental health issues among athletes has become a fashion these days.

The reality is that people from all fields and wakes or life suffer from mental health issues. However, they do not have the luxury to walk in and out of their jobs as they please and take almost a whole year off.

Imagine the mental health of a man who is financially struggling and is continuously worried about getting fired from his job.

So TTFs like Bairstow continue to get picked in england squads, shambolic stuff really. Aussies will win 4-0 or 4-1.

England were better off using covid as an excuse not to travel rather then getting another shameful beating.

I agree with the 2nd para as I have severe, crippling anxiety issues in addition to a host of other conditions and there is no leeway afforded to be. I'm one of those who can barely hold a job because if it

But that doesnt mean its a fashion for athletes! I'm sure most athletes would prefer to put themselves out there on the field rather than recuperating.

The reality is that athletes, like everyone else face enormous amounts of pressure simply because the stakes are a lot higher now than it ever was especially in a sport like cricket . They can break even the toughest individual and that's in normal times . These are unprecedented times and its even worse now

NSW have announced the end of all quarantine restrictions for vaccinated travellers from Nov 1.

That'll put a bit of pressure on other state premiers to follow suit (ACT will for sure).

Also means if other states don't give England what they want in terms of player freedom, Canberra (in the ACT) can step in & pinch their Test match.

‘No talk among England players about Stokes return for Ashes’: Mark Wood

Stokes had taken an indefinite break from cricket to focus on his mental health while also recovering from a second operation on a broken finger, and was not included in coach Chris Silverwood's squad for the Ashes.

England players have not talked about Ben Stokes making a potential comeback for the Ashes tour in Australia after the talismanic all-rounder returned to the nets this week, and their only concern was for his recovery, fast bowler Mark Wood said.

Stokes had taken an indefinite break from cricket to focus on his mental health while also recovering from a second operation on a broken finger, and was not included in coach Chris Silverwood's squad for the Ashes.

But the 30-year-old posted a video of his return to training on Instagram on Thursday, raising speculation that he could still feature in the five-test series which is due to begin in Brisbane on December 8.

"Not once among any of the players has Stokesy been mentioned," Wood told reporters on Friday.

"The one thing at the forefront of everyone's minds is they just want him to be all right. No one wants to even think past that.

"We just want him to be himself and feel right and happy and stuff like that. So not once has it crossed anyone's mind about the Ashes."

Stokes is also out of England's squad for the Twenty20 World Cup in the United Arab Emirates and Oman, where they face defending champions West Indies in their opening match on October 23 in Dubai.

While there are still a couple of months left for the 2021 Ashes series to begin, there are already signs of animosity brewing between the English and Australian sides. Australia's Test captain Tim Paine comments on the status of the series when there was unclarity on the quarantine restrictions has left a bitter taste in the English camp.

Various ex-English greats like Michael Vaughan and Nasser Hussain have hit out at Paine for his words. Now legendary English pacer James Anderson has slammed the wicket-keeper batsman for his 'dangerous' comments.

Talking to the Daily Telegraph, Anderson said, "It is dangerous to start talking like that, especially when we already have one player missing because he is looking after his mental health. I get it that this is an Ashes series and we are going to have this bit of pantomime stuff away from the cricket, but let’s keep it respectable."

“It is designed to distract us. There are always little things that crop up. That is inevitable but it is important we try to focus as much as we can on cricket. That is our job. Our job is not really to get involved in any off-field war of words. We have to focus on our jobs on the field and perform for our country,” added Anderson.

Paine had caused outrage earlier this month by claiming the Ashes will go ahead even if a few England players including captain Joe Root don't travel. In an interview with Radio Station Sen, he said, "The Ashes are going ahead. The first Test is on 8 December, whether Joe is here or not. There will be a squad of England players coming here.”

He added, "If you do want to come and represent your country and play in an Ashes series, which Joe Root said that’s what they all want to do, that’s what they dream about doing, then come and do it."

After months of sceptism over the future of the marquee series, the English Cricket Board (ECB) gave a 'conditional approval' to the series last week depending on various requirements being met.

The series is set to begin on 8th December with the first Test scheduled to take place in Brisbane.

Jimmy should not even talk about Paine. Just stay out of the mind games unless we are better at them, like Vaughan was than Ponting.

The Ashes in Australia have become real dull over the last 8 years. Not expecting much this time either.

4/5-0 drubbing coming up

Yeah, probably. Wrong team picked by England, again.
