Can Sri Lanka prevent a 0-3 whitewash?

They actually played well in this series but just couldn't cross over the line.

Lol, this has to be bazball era's most ridiculous seletion. Hull averages 182 in this season's county championship.
He did get 5 wickets vs Sri Lanka in their warm up, but is only picked because of he has a 6'7 left armer who can occasionally bowl 90 mph.
Why ridiculous? Bashir was the last surprising selection, which seems to be working out all right so far. What selections in the last couple of years have failed?

England have earned the opportunity to give this kid his debut by winning the series and all the other Tests this summer. At best he’s a 4th seamer / 5th bowler playing at home, so if the selection proves to be too unorthodox and backfires, it’s unlikely to affect the result of the match.

3rd test starting today
I guess it will be another win for england.

You can't select fast bowlers on FC numbers especially from a weak domestic system like County Cricket.

Gus Atkinson did not have the greatest FC record before debut .

But he has the attributes to be highly successful in Test cricket and he has shown that.

England are absolutely doing the right thing by selecting bowlers like this.

SL won the toss on 3/3 occasions and has still lost the series comprehensively. Absolutely bizarre to see their reluctance to bat first. Surely if the strength in your team is the batting (which theirs is), you bat first and aim to put 350-400 on the board then challenge the opposition to chase the game. That’s the best chance of winning a Test match for such a team, surely?

Pope hundred gives England upper hand on Sri Lanka

Stand-in captain Ollie Pope answered his critics with a sparkling century on a truncated first day of England’s third Test against Sri Lanka at The Kia Oval.

Pope looked ill at ease at the crease in stepping up to replace the injured Ben Stokes, managing only 30 runs in the first two Tests, but found comfort on his home ground to crack an unbeaten 103.

The skipper’s ton led the home side to 221-3, a position of strength they had no business being in after losing the toss and being asked to bat in conditions ideal for bowling.

The grey sky refused to brighten, the floodlights were on all day and there was a lengthy delay for bad light and rain, yet Sri Lanka were incapable of taking advantage.

Pope added 95 for the second wicket with Ben Duckett, who played some breath-taking strokes in 86 from just 79 balls. In a third-wicket stand of 51 between Pope and Joe Root, Root contributed just 13.

Though play could have possibly been extended until 19:30 BST, a battle with the light was always likely and the players were again taken from the field at 17:54 one delivery into the 45th over.

England, 2-0 up, are looking for their second series clean sweep in succession and a first 100% home summer in 20 years.

excellent scoring rate day 1 , today weather seems clear . SL made a big mistake dropping the excellent spinner for very ordinary V Fernando . Day 3 again seems dicey weather wise ...

not yesterday , Broad's pitch report & both the Captain's post toss said overhead conditions merit bowling 1st . SL bowled shoddy stuff & dropping the spinner for V Fernando was crazily stupid . Today it seems will be nice & sunny so perhaps a batting day with day 3 4cast again dicey & 2-3 hours on day 5 too as per BBC Weather . Fancy a draw ?

That was as close as it can possibly get

t's all going in England's favour so far

Eng struggled vs Sri Lankan bowlers in the 1st test as well.
I wonder how they will handle Bumrah and co. when India tour next year.

Movement, bounce everything on offer. Matchw ill be over quickly with pitch getting deteriorated.

Haven’t been following this series at all. No idea how SL gets 3 match series in England. 2nd tier test ranks should only get 2 match test series in sena countries. Instead of 3rd test couple of T20s would’ve finished summer better for the fans.

Happy to see the reception that Test match gets in England. Srilanka is putting up a legit fight.

SL is taking full toll of light issue. England is forced to bowl spinners. They are going after spinners.

Sky Sports' Ricky Ponting on England's tactics:

"I think it was fair to have a crack with the spinners. Sri Lanka had lost quick wickets and England created some good opportunities.

"If they had taken their chances it would have looked 100 per cent the right decision, so I think it was the right thing to do.

"They still hold a handy lead and will have a ball tomorrow morning that is likely to offer something, so I back their decision to stay on."

Sky Sports Cricket's Michael Atherton:

"I admire England's approach, which is an optimistic one, but I think we were getting to the point where if the umpires had not said the players were going off, Pope might have said enough is enough."

BAD LIGHT STOPS PLAY

Sri Lanka 211/5, trailing by 114 runs.

England refuse to bowl any further spin - it's too dark for pacers out there.

The debutant put down a dolly. This partnership would have died long back had he held on to it.

Third Test, The Kia Oval (day two of five)

England gave Sri Lanka a way back into the final Test on a curious second day at The Kia Oval.

The home side squandered wickets to be bowled out for 325 before Sri Lanka reached 211-5, 114 behind.

Like the first day, bad light was a constant threat, at one stage resulting in the bewildering sight of Chris Woakes bowling four balls of off-spin.

Home captain Ollie Pope turned his century into 154 but received little support. Sri Lanka's bowlers were much improved from their poor showing on Friday and, with England's aggression tipping into recklessness, the hosts lost their last seven wickets for 64 runs.

England's ultra-positivity carried into their bowling and field settings, probably because of an eagerness to capitalise on the conditions.

Sri Lanka raced to 50 inside nine overs, led by Pathum Nissanka's 40-ball half-century. He was not deterred by opening partner Dimuth Karunaratne being run-out by Olly Stone's direct hit.

Nissanka became the first Test wicket for debutant Josh Hull when he drove to a diving Woakes at extra cover. With Stone taking two wickets in as many overs, Sri Lanka lost three for seven to slip to 93-5.

Skipper Dhananjaya de Silva and Kamindu Mendis battled and, when the light worsened after tea, England had to bowl spin. Crucially, Hull dropped De Silva on 23.

Sri Lanka were making good progress until the umpires decided it was too dark. By that point, De Silva had 64 and Mendis 54, their stand worth an unbroken 108.

I agree with Ponting. Bowling the spinners also allowed cricket to be played, which in some ways was Ollie Pope challenging the umpires who seemingly can’t wait to take everyone off the field in every session and deny the crowd a spectacle. England despite not being at their best are still in a reasonable position in the game.

England vs Sri Lanka, Day 3:

SL 223/6

Rain stops play

Play to begin shortly

The sun has started to creep through the clouds as the groundstaff bring in the Super Sopper with the players eagerly waiting to get back on the field.

Sangakkara was heaping praise on positive approach of Dan lawrence. Atherton counters with "Alternative suggestion is he doesn't trust in his defense". It is true for most England "bazballers". As we speak ultra aggressive approach did not pay dividends for Duckett second time around. Tamely got out trying to go over the top

Pope always looks like a cat on a hot tin roof when he starts. Succumbed just like Babar Azam does these days. Trying to run down a ball to third man that was close to off stump, got a dragon

England has 2 whole days. Not sure what is the point of scoring quickly. May be as Athers said they are not good at defense hence this false bravado.

Root to surpass Sangakkara today and Pakistanis going gung ho in their delusional world of him surpassing Sachin's runs tally. :srt

First time i see a subcontinent team besides India showed great discipline with ball in England in a long time. They have clear plans for each players.
"Bore brook out" "block the dabs of root". Root gone now.

Wonder how England will fare vs India next year. they would've struggled 1st test as well if not for Jamie Smith's ton.
But I do sense another score from Jamie and Gus

Wow!! This is excellent stuff from Sri Lanka. Perhaps their best session in this series

Lahiru Kumara and Vishwa Fernando have ripped through England’s batting order

If SRL gets more tour of Eng, they will be first Asian team to win series in both RSA and Eng.
Lol they've already won a series in SA and ENG during the last decade.
Pak and Ind have never won a series in SA.
Pak won three series in a row in england 87,92,96

Jamie Smith looks a far better batsman than Pope. England could bring in Jordan Cox and make Jamie Smith a proper top order batter if they wanted to.
