I don't even know on what basis Shoaib Bashir is playing Test cricket for England. He is so mediocre. Don't they have a spinner in domestic cricket with experience and a decent average?

can see why kamindu averages 65 in fc cricket. looks a solid batter.
100 more runs and this could get interesting.

SL are leading by 146 runs with 4 wickets in hand.

If they can add 100 more runs, SL can have an outside chance of winning.

Fighting 100 by Mendis - but England just seem so powerful at the moment.

Former England captain Michael Atherton via Sky Sports:

"We were very critical of Sri Lanka yesterday morning and they were right behind the game because of that, but they've given themselves an opportunity now."

Former Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara via Sky Sports:

"I love the way they've fought, batted, and adapted to the conditions.

"Overall, when you look at Kamindu's innings, it's been one of the exceptional ones I've seen from a Sri Lanka player."

"I think 250 or 260 is what they should be looking at.

"They'll want to stay in the moment.

"It's about can they keep that focus going?"

Highest partnership for 7th wicket or lower for Sri Lanka in England in Tests

149 - Rangana Herath & Angelo Mathews, Leeds, 2014

105 - Nuwan Kulasekara & Chaminda Vaas, Lord's, 2006
101* - Kamindu Mendis & Dinesh Chandimal, Manchester, 2024

That's pretty harsh for someone who has just started his career, barely played any professional cricket and has already managed to put up some very good performances.

And the answer is no. England has almost always been awful at producing spinners. In the post-war era, it has basically been Derek Underwood...no one...and Greame Swann. I would much rather see them groom someone young then give chances to some mediocre county journeyman who will be completely useless outside England.

Bashir is young, has shown he can use his height to his advantage and has already shown plenty of potential.

This is turning out to be a superb Test match.

England are slightly ahead but SL have a good chance too.

Duckett and Pope proving to be flat track bullies.
Eng are lucky Jamie Smith is such a good batter, he even saved Eng when they were 54-5 vs windies and were in a losing position.
Otherwise Root and Brook would have to carry the batting.

3-0 written all over this after this loss. SL will be demoralised and a belligerent England will Bazball them into submission in the next 2 Tests.

I want Sri Lanka to win but I just don't see it happening.

Full props to them though for fighting hard. This is what test cricket is all about.

SL's bowling is weak. Probably the weakest of the eight teams.

On the topic of pitches, I think it has to be said that England generally has the best and most balanced pitches for test cricket in the world.

It feels like every series they have atleast one new bowler in their line-up. How can you expect to build a team when your bowling attack has such a high churn rate?

Well done Sri Lanka, they had a genuine chance of winning this test.
Jamie Smith saved England

England chase down the target of 205 with 5 wickets remaining to go 1-0 in the Test series against Sri Lanka
Root guides England to victory

A target of 205 was never likely to be a gimme for England, at a venue that has recently been the hardest in this country to chase runs, on a pitch occasionally playing tricks, and against a skilful and willing attack.

Duckett survived a superb leg-side catch by stand-in wicketkeeper Kusal Mendis, who dragged the ball along the ground in his dive, only to edge Asitha Fernando to the same man. Pope, characteristically skittish, toe-ended a reverse-sweep off Jayasuriya and Lawrence, on 34, played across Milan Rathnayake to be lbw.

Brook joined Root with England under pressure and Sri Lanka buoyant. The key moment was when Brook’s sweep off Jayasuriya bounced out of the right hand of diving sub Ramesh at square leg. It would have been a breathtaking catch.

Both men were patient with solid defence, and both survived Sri Lanka reviews. Runs were devilishly difficult to come by, yet England looked to have control until Brook stubbed a return catch to Jayasuriya.

Root remained, nudging and pushing, running hard. He did not find the boundary until the 95th delivery he faced. The former skipper was joined by Smith, at the opposite of end his career but equally unflappable.

Any question of a fifth day was ended when Smith swatted Jayasuriya for six. Shadows lengthened, Smith was bowled by an Asitha yorker, but Root was not to be denied.

What a find Smith is.So many wicket keeper batsmen at their disposal. Buttler. Bairstow, Foakes, Smith. Pope himself can keep.

SL gave a good fight but England are 1-0 up.

I still expect England to win 3-0.

If England end up winning 3-0, it can give them a massive WTC points boost (they also beat Windies 3-0). England have an outside chance of making it to WTC final.

It will be a clean sweep most probably. Sri Lanka had their moments in the game but they were not good enough to beat them in the end.

Mark Wood Ruled Out of Test Series Against Sri Lanka

- Mark Wood has suffered a muscle strain and is ruled out of the Test series

- Leicestershire's Josh Hull earns first call-up to England Men's Test squad_

England Men's pace bowler Mark Wood has been ruled out of the remainder of the Rothesay Test series against Sri Lanka after scans confirmed a right thigh muscle strain. Wood sustained the injury on the third day of England's five-wicket victory in the first Test at Emirates Old Trafford, which prevented him from bowling on the final day.

Leicestershire's 20-year-old left-arm seamer Josh Hull has received his first senior call-up to replace Wood in the squad for the remaining two Tests at Lord's, starting on Thursday, and at the Kia Oval on Friday, 6 September.

Hull, who stands at 6ft 7in, has been a pivotal figure in Leicestershire's bowling attack and played a crucial role in their 2023 One-Day Cup victory. Earlier this month, he made his debut for the Lions against the Sri Lanka tourists, taking five for 74 in the Lions' seven-wicket victory.

The England squad will assemble in London on Monday night ahead of the second Test at Lord's.

That was actually a decent Test match. England edged over the line and got the result in the end which is the main thing, but they might have got away with one a bit here.

Sri Lanka played inconsistently but they did show a lot of fight when the chips were down. England meanwhile did just enough to win but they looked exposed on Day 4 without Mark Wood’s pace bowling and the Ben Stokes triple offering of experienced captaincy, his partnership breaking golden arm, and the clutch run chase batting.

Aside from the middle order engine room of Root-Brook-Smith which was pure class, this looks like a decidedly average England Test XI at the moment. (although to be fair if you took any team’s captain/MVP away and their fastest bowler, they would suffer a drop in quality.)

Veteran Sri Lankan player Angelo Mathews was unhappy with the ball change during the third day of the first Test between England and Sri Lanka at the Emirates Old Trafford in Manchester. Sri Lanka had a lead of 24 runs and the score was 146-4 when the ball was changed.

Kamindu Mendis was batting on 33 and Mathew was on 59 at the time. “It looked like they were running out of plans but unfortunately the ball was changed,” Mathews told Sky Sports.

We were told they didn’t have old enough balls to replace. It changed the entire momentum of the game. You work so hard to get rid of that shine, and we did that. Once the ball was changed, it was a whole different game,” the 37-year-old said ahead of the start of the fourth Day’s play.

“I don’t know which year the balls were,” Mathews added. “You’ve got to have a set of rules where you determine how the ball is going to be changed… I don’t know, but it can be disadvantageous for the batters.” England beat Sri Lanka by five wickets at the end

It’s hard to gauge because once the ball was changed, the overheads came into play and the lights came on, and it sort of coincided with both factors,” England wicketkeeper Jamie Smith theorized after the game.

Coincidentally this is not the first time there has been controversy about ball change. Last English summer when Australia were in England for the Ashes during the fifth Test at the Kia Oval in London the ball was changed after 37 overs. However, Australian opener Usman Khawaja questioned the switch to a newer and harder ball.

“A huge blunder that needs to be investigated,” former Australian player Ricky Ponting said at the time. England were trailing 2-1 in the series ahead of the Test however beat Australia by 49 runs in the fifth Test to level the series 2-2.

These ball changes are working too much in favour of England.

Indian players complained in 2022.

Aussies weren't happy in 2023.

Now Lankans.

If your balls are of poor quality and they need such frequent changing and you don't have enough spare old balls and get a harder newer ball, the other team too should get the same advantage while bowling.

Eng bowlers always try to switch balls if ball is not doing much.

Kind of ridiculous that England is selecting bowlers purely on height. Bashir was picked due to his tall height.
Now Josh Hull selected only because he is a 6'7 young seamer. He as 11 wickets in 9 County games averaging over 60 with the ball. No consideration for the county record at all, only attributes.

If he plays the in the XI and does well, it will be lauded as another genius pick.

Is @Junaids selecting bowlers for England? :nawaz

Olly Stone will play his first Test in three years, replacing the injured Mark Wood in England's XI to face Sri Lanka at Lord's

Why is switching ball allowed?

A ball should only be changed if it is completely unplayable or the ball has been lost.

DDS the fool has opted to bowl in what look like good batting conditions ....

Ollie Pope is just absolutely mediocre. Laughable that they have given him the captaincy.

Fernando continues to probe around Brook's fifth stump line as Sri Lanka's quick wraps up maiden before the players head to lunch.

Former Sri Lanka batter Kumar Sangakkara via Sky Sports:

"The quality of bowling was really, really high."

"All of us looking at the toss and the decision to bowl first on a day like this and a pitch that looked pretty flat, they needed early inroads and they bowled beautifully."

"All in combination and together. If you look at the economy rates, and that's a big thing when you talk about England, you rarely get two fast bowlers going just under three so most of the batters were scoring under a run a ball so they bowled enough deliveries in the right areas to get those wickets."

Former England quick Stuart Broad on Sky Sports Cricket:

"Ultimately, they lost the toss and were put in and I think you sort of take three wickets in the first session of a Test match and then hope that Root and Brook can build a big partnership."

"You always have to remember that with no Ben Stokes the bottom of that line up always looks a bit thin with Woakes in at No 7."

"So, I think the mode of dismissals, you can argue from an outside perspective, looks a bit disappointing but from an England changing room point of view, they are all positive options."

Former England captain Nasser Hussain via Sky Sports:

"There are different ways of getting wickets.

"They had to build pressure and keep England's batting line-up down, who want to score and want to score freely.

"Especially the wicket of Jamie Smith, they kept him under pressure, didn't get any balls to hit, and got his wicket that way.

"Nearly every batter, with the exception of Joe Root, has made mistakes."

"I don't think we can have it both ways.

"When England are a little gung-ho and positive, and Joe Root plays a reverse in India and gets out, everyone goes 'what a load of nonsense, play the situation'.

"Here, they're trying to get their head down. Last game they got their head down and got over the line, and I quite like that they are doing that.

"I think they are a batter short [with Ben Stokes injured] so they have to play the situation a little bit more."

this is a very handy partnership - 350 winning ? What do you make of this pitch folks ? result in 4 days or NOT ? c @James

England have looked much better in this series when they’ve gone back to just playing relatively normal Test cricket.

Root is carrying the England batting on his back at the moment. Some things never change! :)

Another pointless series, as expected. SL just don't have the firepower to even threaten England. 219/6 and they can't wrap it up. 300 and it's over for SL.

And to think DDS batted first :ROFLMAO:

SL have really lost the plot in this session.

This bowling is very limited. I still can't believe they ran England close in the first match with Asitha Fernando as your lead bowler.
