What's new

England reach 53/3 at Stumps on Day 3, needing 482 runs to win 2nd Test against India

Kohli still arguing with Menon about that Root decision.

Let it go Virat!

Shastri too seething with anger, his beer soaked eyes bulging out. Lol.

Because it's obviously a hugely spin friendly wicket understably curated to aid the home team level the series.

I'll be completely honest. I hate these type of pitches where its spin right from the start. This isnt a criticism against India, Pakistan have done this often in the past too.

However, to say it is a 'poor pitch' because of this is unfair. It's almost an unconscious bias in the favour of fast bowlers. These pitches are as equally valid as any other pitch.

Only thing is to make these kind of pitches you have to obviously under prepare it and concede its not going to last 5 days.

This wasn't an umpiring issue, ball tracking states the ball did not hit in line of off stump. Hard to argue with that...Kohli will be having a spat with a keyboard next. Great captain!

Excellent by Ashwin today. Made batting on this wicket look easy compared to everyone else.

I don't know how long Jadeja has at test level, but Axar can be a good replacement for him in Asian conditions when he retired.

Almost similar kind of bolwers both are

jadeja gets a more bounce but the trajectory axar bowled is hard to get away

Anywhichways this pitch is tailor made for him to debut

But massive credit to our batsman in getting a partnership so good that they set up a win from a position where England could have been competitive. Kohli the batsman is still the very best.

Yes, I think the approach in the third test regarding to the top order is going to have to be different, Crawley needs to be back in the opening slot or one down and try to mimic what rohit is doing for India, he takes the game to the bowlers and England need a similar approach otherwise constant pressure on Joe is going to get to much.

Still crying despite seeing Ashwin score a 100? Your reactions are more entertaining than this match TBH

Pathetic from kohli. Its umpire's call . What us he arguing about?

Kohli's argument was that the umpire had given not out on the caught behind issue and had made no call on the LBW decision. So there was no "umpire's call" involved

But the rules are clear that the not out applies to all mode of decision

Why have two spinners opened the bowling? and Ishant one the most experienced pace bowler currently playing only bowled 2 overs?

But Ishant is one of the most experienced new ball bowler definitely in Asia at the moment?

Don't know what you are watching but Ishant did open the bowling, including bowling the first over. The spinners were then quickly brought in as we has less than 20 overs to bowl at England today

India have two days to take seven England wickets and get back to parity in the all-important second Test of the four-match series, with a place in the finals of the ICC World Test Championship at stake.

A large reason for India to be in the commanding position they are in is R Ashwin. Having taken a brilliant 5/43 on the second day, Ashwin scored a sensational century – his first in his home ground – and shored India up with a partnership of 96 with captain Virat Kohli.

Ashwin’s 106 ensured England were set a mammoth 482 to chase on a pitch becoming increasingly difficult to bat on. The visiting batsmen came out with intent, and battled for 19 overs, but were reduced to 53/3 by stumps.

India resumed the day at 54/1 but lost a flurry of wickets in a difficult first hour. In the middle of it all, was Ben Foakes behind the stumps. His expert technique meant he made wicketkeeping look easy on a surface on which it was anything but.

The first to fall was Cheteshwar Pujara, in a rather unfortunate manner. Having pinged one to short leg, Pujara dropped his bat in an effort to return to the safety of the crease, by which time the fielder had found Foakes, who whipped off the bails.

Three overs later, Rohit Sharma, whose assertive century in the first innings laid the foundation for India, was stumped off Leach, Foakes displaying lightning hands to catch Rohit off. The dangerous Rishabh Pant stepped out to take Leach on but was undone by a sharp turner, with Foakes doing brilliantly to take it down the leg and disturb the stumps.

Vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane didn’t last long either, scoring a 14-ball 10 before falling to Moeen Ali, an inside-edge lobbing off the pads to the fielder. India were 86/5, and their hopes of building a daunting lead took a hit. Within six overs, Axar Patel had been trapped in front by Ali too, and it was just Kohli holding up one end, desperate for a partnership.

England would have thought they had India on the mat, but Ashwin came in and gave the hosts the solidity they needed. And he adopted a vastly different approach to Kohli’s – he was assertive, employing the sweep to put the bowlers off their lines, and when play was stopped for lunch, Ashwin had scored 34, with Kohli on 38.

On resumption, they carried on. The duo brought up their half-centuries within an hour, and India soon crossed 200, their lead extending past 400. In the second half of the session, the breakthrough came, when Kohli, having scored a terrific 62, was trapped in front by Ali. India immediately looked vulnerable, with Kuldeep Yadav following suit shortly, and early in the final session, Ishant Sharma walking back.

Ashwin was left with Mohammed Siraj, playing his first Test in India, for company when he was within reach of a fifth Test century. He farmed the strike, took on the bowlers – he even swept a six – as the crowd cheered loudly every ball Siraj survived. When Ashwin finally got to the mark, it was pure adulation. He was dismissed for 106 thereafter, but India were in a commanding position.

The England batsmen opted to go after the bowlers right from the off. Rory Burns found the fence four times, but Dom Sibley at the other end was trapped in front by Axar for three. Dan Lawrence walked in and managed to find the fence a few times as well, including a six, but Ashwin was at it again, looping one into Burns to claim the edge.

When Nightwatchman Jack Leach was dismissed in the next over, the momentum from England’s quick start was fully drained. The task awaiting the visitors now is daunting – two full days left in the match, and they have just seven wickets in the bag. India are primed for victory.

Tim Paine must be sulking that Ashwin getting all love after scoring a century .. ur team mates don’t like u statement dint go well lol

Looks quite possible that Kohli will be banned for the next test now with him already on 2 demerit points and 2 cases of dissent to the umpires decision in this game.

Yes pitch spinning square makes every sense

Dude, you didnt even know ishant opened the bowling. So Ashwin scored a 100 and India scored 615 runs on a pitch turning square?

Yes Ashwin scored a 100 on a turner where the pitch was exploding first day? Ashwin played well and must be given credit.

Honestly there are no crazy demons on this pitch - its no different from a greentop, where a swinging new ball makes everyone’s life difficult but once it becomes old scoring is much easier. Here the hard new ball is turning, but if you see it through, Ash, Kohli & Sharma showed that one can score runs too. And as far as toss advantage for team batting is concerned, how is it any different than NZ where the team batting second is always at an advantage because of the swing upfront & the wicket getting progressively flatter?

Naa, people are just crying because its India. If this pitch was in Pakistan, most here would have defended it.

It maybe a valid point but to risk demerit points and a ban for this decision when we are already well ahead on the game is not very smart of him tbh.

India lost Lord's test 2018 in 2 days and India are incompetent but England losing in Chennai in 4 days = pitch us not good enough

Ashwin is the best spin all rounder ever , No doubt about it , already 5 hundreds . I think he can easily end up with 550 wickets and 4000 runs . Thats a huge effort.

England should try a decent score to build confidence for the next test. Don't want a hammering here .

You shortened 50 wicket and 500 runs from previous comment :sanga

I would be surprised if england lose this match ... it's a great batting track...

Yes they were not critical runs India would have won regardless but on an individual level he must be give credit.

Most importantly it will spare us having to hear for the next 20 years that India was unfair by providing an "unplayable rank turner".
