I don't mind him getting past Sachin. But just to see the reaction of some people I like to see him register a bunch of low scores.
If you can't even survive 20 overs vs kookaburra ball then why even play? Indian batsmen are absolutely useless cost us several series wins.

Very good day for the bazballers
The two biggest burdens on the team, captain stokes and ollie pope scored crucial runs.
lets see if stokes can kick on tomorrow, he has not made a single valuable knock since the ashes.

6 dropped catches by Kiwis and 3 by Latham alone.

Latham is a huge liability if you take out his minnow bashing of BD and Zimbabwe.

Averaging 31 with the bat since December, 2019 against other sides, dropping catches, not taking the gloves.

Utterly mediocre.

Yes Latham is a very average batsman, his 86 in Pune was a shock to evryone. He did score 47 now at a good strike rate, NZ will stick with him as captain.

Alot of high averaging new young batters coming up in the NZ domestic circuit, hopefully NZ dont persist with him too long if he doesn't show consistency.

Brook ton and six NZ drops get England back into Test

First Test, Christchurch (day two of five)

New Zealand 348: Williamson 93, Phillips 58*; Carse 4-64, Bashir 4-69

England 319-5: Brook 132*, Pope 77; Smith 2-86

England are 29 runs behind

Harry Brook's calculated century propelled England back into the first Test against New Zealand on the second day in Christchurch.

Brook was dropped four times in his unbeaten 132, without which England might already be on the way to defeat.

The Kiwis dropped six overall, three by captain Tom Latham, in England's 319-5, 29 runs behind.

Some outstanding New Zealand bowling reduced the tourists to 71-4, including 21-year-old Jacob Bethell out for 10 on his Test debut.

Brook combined with Ollie Pope for a fifth-wicket partnership of 151. Pope, standing in as wicketkeeper, was pushed down to number six from his usual number three and made 77, the first time he has passed 29 in seven Test innings.

It took a truly breath-taking moment to remove Pope, Glenn Phillips holding a spectacular flying catch at gully from a full-blooded cut at Tim Southee.

England captain Ben Stokes, playing in the city of his birth, looked closer to his best for 37 not out in an unbroken stand of 97 with Brook, though Stokes was another put down by Latham on 30.

All this after New Zealand were bowled out for 348, pace bowler Brydon Carse taking the two wickets to fall in the morning to end with 4-64.

Wasteful New Zealand give England edge

These two sides often produce compelling contests. The 2019 World Cup final and New Zealand's one-run win in Wellington 18 months ago are two recent classics, and this has the potential to be another thriller.

New Zealand should be well on top. They were wasteful with the bat on day one, then shambolic with their catching on Friday.

The fielding did a disservice to their seamers, who gave England a lesson in using the new ball. Whereas England struggled to find the right length on the first morning, New Zealand were relentless.

Bethell could not have been given a much tougher assignment as England's new number three, yet did not look out of place.

Brook and Pope hung in long enough for the ball to get older and the sun to come out. Conditions eased, England hauled themselves back into the match.

Given the small deficit and depth of their batting, England are marginally on top, though a strong burst with the second new ball on Saturday morning could tip the balance towards New Zealand once more.

Brook and Pope battle back

For all the lingering questions about England's Bazballing approach to batting, the Brook-Pope stand was a counter-punch when it was needed most. They rattled along at nearly five an over.

There was fortune, even without the missed chances. Pope needed to time to settle, both men slashed through and over the slips. Brook's let-offs came on 18, 41, 70 and 106.

If Phillips, at gully off the bowling of debutant Nathan Smith, held Brook's first offering, England would have been 77-5. The next two drops, Latham at slip off Smith and Devon Conway at deep mid-wicket off Phillips, were borderline farcical.

Brook passed 2,000 Test runs in his 36th innings. Only the great Herbert Sutcliffe got there faster for England. Paradoxically, Pope's runs at number six will only increase the questions over whether he should be England's number three.

Given his fluctuating year and the lives gifted to Brook, Pope must have been cursing his luck that he was the victim of Phillips' gravity-defying brilliance. Even Brook gave him a consoling pat on the way off.

Brook, who had already pulled two sixes, scooped Southee for four then cut the same bowler to go to his seventh Test ton. Then came the final miss, a flick down the leg side off Will O'Rourke was parried by keeper Tom Blundell. Leg-byes were given, but a review would have confirmed bat.

Black Caps sublime and ridiculous

From 319-8 overnight, New Zealand immediately had Southee bounced out to begin Phillips' eventful day. He was hit on the head by Carse, dropped by Joe Root, reverse-scooped Chris Woakes for four, pulled off a superman dive to avoid being run-out and was left unbeaten on 58 when O'Rourke was yorked.

The cool, cloudy conditions were ideal for seam bowling and New Zealand's quartet were superb.

Matt Henry's nip-backer continued Zak Crawley's awful record against New Zealand – he averages only 10 against the Kiwis – and brought Bethell to the crease.

The left-hander took 13 balls to get off the mark and struck two sweet boundaries off Smith before edging to give Smith a first Test wicket. When Root played a limp shot to chop on in the same over, England were in the mire.

Ben Duckett, dropped on 23 by Latham, took on the short ball after lunch, only to hook the pacey O'Rourke to long leg and fall for 46.

England were flawed, allowed back into the game by New Zealand's drops – one of the six by Phillips, another off his bowling - before he pulled off his moment of magic.

Come on England. Excellent fight back , hopefully tomorrow we can move in to a position of strength with batting depth available after these two.

Brook gets yet another life today, taking his lives to 5. So unusual from the blackcaps who are usually so sharp in the field, especially like they were in India

Hate both teams but probably poms more. But then nz winning benefits india so unfortunately I have to root for something else to happen. Let's go for a draw

Cannot remember a period in last 15-20 yrs where we have had such competitive and compelling series in test cricket over 3-4 month period and involving so many teams (NZ, Eng, Pak, Bang, Ind, Aus, SL, SA).

Hoping that this series also turns out to be a banger

How good is Eng's new tail though.
Gus Atkinson, Brydon Carse, Mark Wood all going to be one hell of an attack for Australia.

Finally maybe we will see a competitive Ashes in Aus next year

Wood has toured Aus before without much effect. Plus he's constantly on the physio's table to it's anyone's guess as to whether he'll be fit. Atkinson is the slowest of the trio so I don't think his bounce will get enough zip through. Carse is probably the one to look out for, consistently above 140 clicks with awkward bounce.
All in all I think it will be another typical drubbing for them down under.

Looks like I was wrong, I was quite confident NZ would be on top here... Still time in the match but I think Eng may have wrapped up this match.... Maybe NZ is not as good as I thought, their 3-0 vs Indians had me giving them a little too much credit.

Fielding is the main thing that let them down with all the dropped catches. They should have been putting on a lead by now.

Goneeee
As always I am right.
Rachin Sachin cochin got found out vs pace and bounce yet again. Hahahah

Mamoon lel.

He got lucky in India on crappy pitches and due to rohit's non existent captaincy. He plays spin ok when it's not ragging that's about it.

Kiwis 3 down already and they still trail by 80 runs.

England is heading towards victory here

Get Williamson , and where in complete control. Fantastic effort so far. Really impressed with Carse. Has the complete skill set for a quality fast bowler.

England in full control here now.. Win coming for them tomorrow for sure.

Day 3: Stumps - New Zealand lead by 4 runs

ENG 499
NZ 348 & 155/6 (49) CRR: 3.16

England close on victory in first Test against New Zealand

First Test, Christchurch (day three of five)

New Zealand 348 (Williamson 93) & 155-6 (Williamson 61; Carse 3-22)

England 499 (Brook 171, Stokes 80, Pope 77; Henry 4-84)

New Zealand lead by four runs

England are on course for victory in the first Test against New Zealand after Chris Woakes' crucial two wickets in two balls on the third day in Christchurch.

The tourists had built a first-innings lead of 151 and threatened to overrun the Kiwis by reducing them to 64-3 before Kane Williamson launched a rescue act.

Williamson looked immovable and ominous for his 61, only for Woakes to deliver a potentially decisive blow.

A nip-backer earned a marginal lbw decision and, next ball, Tom Blundell feathered to Ollie Pope.

When Brydon Carse got his third wicket, Glenn Phillips lbw, New Zealand were left 155-6, just four runs ahead.

The Black Caps are in a mess of their own making. They took their total of dropped catches to eight with another two on Saturday.

Harry Brook was put down for a fifth time on his way to 171, the highest score by an overseas batter in a Test at Hagley Oval. His average of 89.40 in away Tests is bettered only by Sir Donald Bradman.

Brook added 159 with Ben Stokes, the England captain's 80 his best in Test cricket since the summer of 2023.

Stokes played a supporting role as he shared 63 and 40 with Gus Atkinson and Carse respectively, taking England to 499.

England squeeze wasteful New Zealand

Where might this Test be had New Zealand not wasted wickets in their first innings and, more importantly, held at least some of their catches? It has been an unusually sloppy performance from the Kiwis.

Williamson, who became the first New Zealander to reach 9,000 Test runs, was promising a repeat of Wellington 2023, when his 132 engineered a historic one-run win after England made New Zealand follow on.

Woakes seemed an unlikely source of English inspiration. To that point he endured a poor match: wicketless in the first innings, out second ball and then watching Atkinson and Carse show they can provide lower-order runs.

His intervention was high in both drama and skill. Instead of the end of the day being a chance for New Zealand to build a handy lead, it became a battle to survive.

England still have work to do with the ball. When they do eventually come to a run-chase it will be on a surface that is getting better for batting.

New Zealand-England contests are rarely straightforward and this one may have more twists, but the tourists are heavy favourites from here.

Stokes in the slipstream

England were 319-5 overnight and faced the second new ball six overs into the day. Stokes charged at Tim Southee when he sent down the first delivery with it, then settled into the slipstream of Brook, Atkinson and Carse.

Even before the new ball, Brook had been dropped again. On adding 15 to his 132, he was missed by gully Phillips off Will O'Rourke and threw his eyes to the heavens in disbelief.

Reprieved, Brook hit Southee on to the roof of the pavilion then played a tired poke at Matt Henry. Woakes' wafted drive at Southee left England seven down and only 34 ahead.

While Stokes was steady - his strike-rate of 54.8 was the third-slowest score of 80 or more by any England batter since he became captain - Atkinson and Carse were explosive.

Atkinson clobbered anything short in his 48 from 36 balls. Carse, one of the most capable number 10s England have had, belted 33 not out after giving the eighth and most difficult chance to a diving Phillips running back from point.

Stokes and Shoaib Bashir left Henry with 4-84, Stokes falling 20 short of becoming the first England captain to make a century in the city of his birth since Michael Atherton in Manchester in 1994.

Wizard Woakes winkles Williamson wicket

New Zealand captain Tom Latham shelled three of the drops and his fortune did not improve with an edge off Woakes to second slip Brook for one. Atkinson rubbed salt into Kiwi wounds with a fine swoop at mid-on to pouch Devon Conway's miscued pull at Carse.

Carse has been exceptional since making his Test debut in Pakistan. Pacey and capable of generating awkward bounce, he is reminiscent of fellow Durham man Steve Harmison.

From Carse's first ball after tea, Rachin Ravindra was suckered into a pull, only finding Jacob Bethell at deep mid-wicket. Stokes, the architect of the plan, was celebrating before the catch was taken.

Despite the peril, the unflappable Williamson continued from his 93 in the first innings. He toyed with the field by delicately dabbing to third man and, along with Daryl Mitchell, got after Bashir.

New Zealand's momentum was building, Woakes was summoned. Wide of the crease, he got enough movement in for Williamson to fail in the tightest review. Next ball, delivered from close to the stumps, nipped just enough for Blundell to tickle.

Phillips survived the hat-trick ball only to be pinned to the crease by Carse for another marginal lbw. Mitchell, 31 not out, appears to be New Zealand's last hope.

BBC

What a find Brydon Carse is for England, has all the variation and skills. And can bat.
If only he was 5 years younger.

How good is Eng's new tail though.
Gus Atkinson, Brydon Carse, Mark Wood all going to be one hell of an attack for Australia.

Finally maybe we will see a competitive Ashes in Aus next year
I will be shocked if Wood manages to play more than 2 tests if he makes the tour at all. He is old and very injury prone
Carse and Atkinson should wreck havoc on Australian pitches vs a weak Aus side in transition.

Every other series prior is taken as ashes preparation for England, they dont take any other series seriously.
I haven't seen an Aus side this weak, England should be very disappointed if they don't win the ashes.

If NZ can get a 100 run lead they can make a match out of it.

Eng would be chasing the target with 9 bats as Joe Root won't score we know that much....

Thieves attack New Zealand vs England's first Test at Hagley Oval, several items stolen overnight including...

The first Test match between New Zealand and England at the Hagley Oval in Christchurch took an unexpected turn when a shocking incident disrupted the match. Overnight on Friday, November 29, thieves broke into a secure area at the stadium and stole several items, including two cameras belonging to the UK broadcaster TalkSport.

Big theft during New Zealand vs England first Test

The big theft hindered TalkSport to provide visual coverage of the third day's play on their YouTube channels. Despite 24/7 surveillance, a security breach occurred at the venue, as confirmed by Venues Otautahi chief executive Caroline Harvie-Teare. Local authorities are currently investigating the matter, analysing CCTV footage to determine the circumstances of the theft.

Caroline Harvie-Teare, the CEO of Venues Otautahi, stated that the police are currently examining comprehensive CCTV footage to investigate the incident. Additionally, Venues Otautahi is conducting its own thorough investigation to determine the exact circumstances of the theft. To ensure the safety of the teams, media personnel, and facilities for the remainder of the match, the management has committed to implementing enhanced security measures.

“Some of the things we are aware of are some Venues Ōtautahi technology equipment, like laptops; we've had a TV taken from one of the corporate areas; we've had alcohol taken; we've had some food taken, and we are just working through that full list with police on that. It was all locked up, so obviously we are concerned about what's happened; this is not something that has happened before—certainly not in my tenure,” Caroline Harvie-Teare said.

New Zealand Cricket (NZC) expressed both surprise and disappointment at the recent break-in and theft of TalkSport's cameras. The board acknowledged the disruption caused to the broadcaster and expressed their sympathy. However, NZC remains committed to supporting the affected team and ensuring they have access to all necessary equipment for the match.

In collaboration with relevant authorities, NZC is taking steps to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.

“We take our hosting responsibilities very seriously and are sorry such a talented team of storytellers has been inconvenienced. We've reached out to express our disappointment over the theft and to offer them every assistance in accessing equipment in the interim,” NZC said in an official statement.

Nz waste of space.

New Zealand 8 down now with just a lead of 41 runs against England. Daryl Mitchell, the last hope for Kiwis now.

Carse 10fer. Really awkward bowler to face as he can kick it up off a good length. If he can stay fit he will be a real asset for England in Australia.

Wow. ENG taking NZ to cleaners. How in the world did Santner not get picked after the series he had in India..

Lol hahah england beat the team which demolished arrogant india in their home.
Loving it..

Carse and Bethell lead England to impressive win over NZ

First Test, Christchurch (day four of five)

New Zealand 348 (Williamson 93) & 254 (Carse 6-42)

England 499 (Brook 171) & 104-2 (Bethell 50*)

England won by eight wickets; lead series 1-0

Brydon Carse and debutant Jacob Bethell led England to an impressive eight-wicket victory over New Zealand in the first Test in Christchurch.

Carse claimed three of the four second-innings wickets England required on the fourth morning to end with 6-42, his maiden Test five-wicket haul.

To go with the four he took in the first innings, the 29-year-old had match figures of 10-106, the first away 10-for by an England bowler since Monty Panesar in 2012, and first by a seamer since Ryan Sidebottom in this country 16 years ago.

Daryl Mitchell clubbed 84, adding 45 for the last wicket with Will O'Rourke, to drag New Zealand up to 254 all out.

That left England a target of only 104, which they reached inside 13 overs for a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. Bethell, the 21-year-old, hit the winning runs in his 37-ball unbeaten 50.

There was a concern for England when Ben Stokes pulled up during his fifth over, but the captain said he will be fit for the second Test in Wellington on Friday (22:00 GMT Thursday).

England impress in much-needed win

This was a much-needed win for England after three defeats in their previous four matches. It tips them into credit for 2024, now with eight wins and seven losses.

They were given a huge helping hand by the Kiwis, who dropped eight catches. That takes nothing away from a spirited and tenacious performance by an England side that had to be re-jigged following the injury to wicketkeeper Jordan Cox.

Ollie Pope stood in as keeper and made runs at number six, Bethell showed why England rate him so highly, Shoaib Bashir picked up wickets in the first innings after struggling on the tour of Pakistan and Carse is the find of the winter.

Chris Woakes enjoyed a rare away moment of success with crucial wickets on the third evening and England even managed a victory without relying on Joe Root, who was out for a duck in the first innings. Instead, Harry Brook made 171 to take his overseas average to 89, behind only Sir Don Bradman.

Stokes looked back to somewhere near his best as a batter, bowler and leader after a difficult period, so the injury was a worry, given his fitness history. He explained the abrupt end of his spell as a precaution over some stiffness in his back.

This is the fifth successive away tour where England have taken the first Test, yet they have gone on to win only one of those series – in Pakistan in 2022. Now they return to the Basin Reserve, scene of a heart-stopping one-run defeat in 2023.

Carse goes where Broad and Anderson did not

When Carse was banned for historical betting offences earlier this year, he feared for his international career. Now he is England's outstanding bowler of the winter.

He has filled the hole left by injured Durham team-mate Mark Wood. Not only was this the first away five-for by an England seamer since Wood in Hobart in early 2022, it was also Carse's first in first-class cricket since April 2021, further strengthening England's assertion over the different skills required for the highest level.

In a year where England have regenerated their pace attack, Carse has taken only three Tests to take an away 10-for, a feat never managed by legendary pair James Anderson and Stuart Broad.

Carse is lively without being express. He troubles batters with bounce and awkward lengths. After New Zealand resumed on 155-6, Nathan Smith was pinned in front of leg stump and, in the same over, Matt Henry palpably leg-before to a full delivery.

When Stokes was forced out of the attack, Tim Southee slapped Gus Atkinson for two sixes, then picked out Root at deep mid-wicket.

Mitchell had 47 from 128 deliveries when O'Rourke arrived, but flicked a switch to take 37 off his next 38. England dropped the field, Mitchell farmed the strike, O'Rourke held up his end.

Carse was summoned once more and one Mitchell slap too many ended in the hands of Woakes at long-off.

After Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett were dismissed, the low-pressure chase was the perfect scenario for left-hander Bethell to demonstrate his talent. Smith was wiped for four fours in the same over.

Putting on a show, Bethell hooked Smith over square leg for six and, three balls later, sealed the match.

Curious Kiwis

Just last month, New Zealand pulled off one of the greatest away triumphs by any team with their 3-0 win in India, only to experience a significant comedown with this slapdash performance.

Their first-innings total should have been higher than 348 and they had England 71-4 in reply. The drops were farcical and out of character. Brook was put down five times and played a match-defining innings.

This result pretty much ends New Zealand's hopes of reaching the World Test Championship final, leaving India, Australia and South Africa in contention.

Mitchell Santner, a hero of India, comes into the squad for the remaining two Tests. The hosts might ponder how to get batter Will Young, player of the series in India, back into their XI.

They also have a dilemma over Southee, who is due to retire after the last Test in Hamilton. New Zealand's second-highest wicket-taker of all time was ineffective in Christchurch, at times treated with disdain by the England batters.

'He keeps charging in' - what they said

England skipper Ben Stokes on Brydon Carse:
"I've been fortunate enough to grow up with Brydon [Carse] in my Durham days and I've always known his potential and his talent.

"So to see him come into this team and make an impact so early on is amazing. He's an absolute workhorse and he'll keep charging in all day regardless of whether conditions are in his favour or not.

"To see him get his rewards, walking off with six-for and 10 in the game is amazing."

New Zealand captain Tom Latham: "Isolate the first two innings, that sort of surface, the position we were in, I was happy. We had our opportunities, on another day the catches go to hand and it would've been slightly different. That’s the sport we play.

"Some days it doesn’t fall your way. From our point of view, guys aren't meaning to drop them, they are trying. Some days they catch them, other days it drops, that's the game of cricket."

No hate my guy, till Root proves he can score on tough conditions and under pressure he is just an avg bat to me.
Joke statement, 2021 India series, 2016 South Africa tour, 2017 South Africa series, 2021 Sri Lanka series even 2019 South Africa series, 2022-23 NZ tour etc, have you actually watched him play?

Saw him Aus quite a lot actually, its been quite a struggle for him. agreed he has looked great on the flatter Indian wickets...

Yeah poor excuse, against his biggest rival at their house, when he has played 14 tests there he has to show up to considered a great.
he probably agrees, but your comment was about conditions and preassure, he has handled both, he just has a problem against high pace + hogh bounce

He has not handled the conditions in Aus nor the pressure of playing against his greatest Rival in Aus.

This finished Pakistan series is a prime example, when the wicket was flat with nothing in it for the bowlers it was all dunkin donuts eat all you want, the minute Pakistanis changed into a turning track our boy here struggled to put bat on ball...

There is no pressure, he scores well against them in home tests which is arguably even more psychologically preassuring considering we've lost every downunder ashes decisively while we're expected to win in England.

have you ever watched him? He struggled in the Pakistan series yes but he has a 200 in India, a 135 and 84 this year, big runs in South africa variable bounce wickets and so forth.

Lol this statement 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂..

Yeah he feels no pressure which is why he scores at home.but can't score away lol...

I told you, he struggles with the extra pace and bounce, it's a technical problem, not mental.

Extra pace and bounce is the condition, the pressure is playing in a hostile environment, you don't need to be an intellect like our puppu or Imran Khan to figure this out.

Again, I'm saying it's not mental lol, it's a technical flaw, anyway every great batter has one country where they tank (beside the top 5-6), not as big of a deal as you're making it seem

I give you credit for one thing though unlike a few desperate blind Britstanis and a Bangladeshi here, you as an Englishman know someone like Root is not in the class of SRT. SRT is king of kings...

Come on mate. “avg bat”

110 on a bowler friendly wicket in Joburg against Morkel and Rabada when wickets were tumbling all over the place.

A knock to help England achieve a victorious away series in South Africa at the Wanderers. It doesn’t get much better than that.

14 tests in Aus with no 100s and a constant struggle against his biggest rival..

That is not atg territory James, even you would agree..

I can't rate Root as a great due to the above.. He is definitely not in Steve Smiths class, I would say he is more in the Younis Khan territory a decent to ok bat with the odd good innings on a difficult wicket however will struggle under challenging conditions and pressure more often than not.....

England Men name XI for second Test against New Zealand

England have announced their XI for the second Men's Test match against New Zealand, starting at the Cello Basin Reserve in Wellington on Friday, December 6.

The team remains unchanged from Christchurch, where England took a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

England's XI for the second Test:

The loss in 1st Test and over-rate penalty means NZ are probably out of WTC race now. They had a small chance prior to this series.

Come on mate. “avg bat”

110 on a bowler friendly wicket in Joburg against Morkel and Rabada when wickets were tumbling all over the place.

A knock to help England achieve a victorious away series in South Africa at the Wanderers. It doesn’t get much better than that.

I disagree with this. That was a Saffer attack without Steyn or Philander. They didn't even have Kyle Abbott.

Rabada was a 20 year old in his 5th Test.

Decent knock but doesn't disprove the notion that Root has issues against accurate bounce.

Hardus and Morris were never Test class bowlers.

That shot he plays down to third man gets him into trouble on bouncier wickets. He inside edged one onto the stumps that way in the first Test.

Saw the highlights yesterday. Never seen worse catching from a New Zealand side who are typically regarded as the gold standard in the field.

Brook should've been out well before his hundred.

Their attack also seems a bit samey pace wise. ENG seamers were quicker.

I think the answer for Root in Australia is to leave a lot more deliveries on length

You can still attack overpitched deliveries and off line short balls .

New Zealand, England reveal playing XIs for second Test

Both teams will enter the second Test unchanged as the race to feature in the World Test Championship Final hots up.

New Zealand have resisted the urge for change and will stick with the same playing XI for the second Test against England that commences in Wellington on Friday, 6 December.

The Black Caps fell to a disappointing eight-wicket loss to England in the opening Test in Christchurch and their hopes of reaching next year's ICC World Test Championship Final took another hit when they received a points deduction for a slow over-rate during the Hagley Oval contest.

And while New Zealand were tempted to slot top-order batter Will Young and left-arm spinner Mitchell Santner into their XI for the second match of the three-game series, skipper Tom Latham confirmed his side would stick with the same line-up that featured in the series opener.

“The balance that we've gone in with is the right balance for this wicket, and we obviously have some spin options in the top seven anyway," Latham said on Thursday.

“We think it's the right fit and the guys are looking forward to the challenge.”

It's just the third time in the last 47 Tests that New Zealand have named an unchanged Test XI, while England have also followed suit by indicating they will use the same set of players that impressed during the opening match of the series.

Middle-order batter Harry Brook was the star of the show with a magnificent 171 in that Test, although New Zealand didn't help themselves as they dropped eight catches during England's first innings when the game was on the line.

While disappointed with his team's performance in the field, Latham admitted there hadn't been additional training done in the lead-up to the second Test.

“We haven’t necessarily put an extra focus on it," he said.

“We understand we weren't at our best last game, but as I’ve said, we try to keep things as level as possible.

“We always put the work in behind the scenes, regardless of whether things have gone our way or not.

“The last couple of days have been no different, and the guys have been working hard to make sure they're ready for this game.”

New Zealand XI: Tom Latham (c), Devon Conway, Kane Williamson, Rachin Ravindra, Daryl Mitchell, Tom Blundell (wk), Glenn Phillips, Nathan Smith, Tim Southee, Matt Henry, Will O'Rourke

England XI: Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Jacob Bethell, Joe Root, Harry Brook, Ollie Pope (wk), Ben Stokes (c), Chris Woakes, Gus Atkinson, Brydon Carse, Shoaib Bashir

He is just not that great. Sorry pommies

Atkinson will play his 10th test match in 5 months. That is way too much test cricket for a fast bowler.
Not surprising he didnt like bowl at his best 1st test.

Green pitch. ENgland is up against some world class seam bowling on a pitch that overly helpful for seamers. Root gone as usual 26/3 now.

England should have declared and bowled here. Very improper balance between ball and bat. Ball is missing the bat almost every ball.

If Brook survives here and scores this will be a legendary knock. Extremely challenging. Now trying to upset henry by taking him down.
