Not a bad show by the Poms this.

With 300+ runs on the first day with wickets still in hand, it will be quite an achievement if they lose from here.

Butler down - Hazlewood with the 3rd.

This reminds me of the 2009 Ashes 1st Test at Cardiff. England ended day one 330 odd for 7. Were all out for 435. Aussies racked up 600 plus. Then we had the Monty and Jimmy great escape. This is a flat lifeless pitch. This will be a bore draw unless we get some serious cloud cover so Jimmy gets his swing going. Or the pitch deteriorates into a bunsen. I expect a high scoring bore draw.

Not bad effort From Aus.

If this was Indian bowling, England wuld have been 380/4 with a double ton from Cook and a massive hundred from Ballance

That was enthralling!

Bet the Aussies wish their Rhino had been available instead of their Sloop - I reckon they could have got England out for 250.

Hazlewood looks a proper test bowler and Starc was much more effective that Johnson - a great ball to defeat Stokes!

Joe Root is the undisputed best batsman on the planet.

Great fightback from England; Need Mo to score some quick runs in the morning and push the total to 400, Broad can hang around to so no issue there. The ball might do a bit in the morning but positivity favours the brave as Joe Root has proven. Ultra-Aggressive fields also provide an opportunity for quick scoring.

As things stand , England are a 100 runs short on that wicket. Anything below 450 is a decent effort by Aus.

England are doing ok I think, not a bad start.

Whether England will be in a commanding position or not is once again down to the beard. You just can't keep him out of the game!:ikj:moali

He is not even top 3.AB Amla and Sanga are better in tests.Kohli AB and a few others better in ODIs.

England ahead IMO. Key moment was BraHa dropping a simple catch when Root hadn't scored. We were all over England right then, could have had them 4/50 odd.

As predicted by me, MJ + Starc means 4rpo all day.

50/50 at this stage.

England would be happy- in past series when they have had a bad first day it has set the tone for the series. Root was the difference.

Really think Mitch Marsh should have been in front of Watson for the allrounder place. Watson + the duke ball = LBW. We missed Rhino today. His heart + just enough movement is a handful on variable pitch like this. Still yelling at my TV over Haddit, like I have been for the past 3 years. Stoopid Slog Donkey.

It is all set up now- Aus will need to go past this score as it looks like the pitch will deteriorate and is already showing variable bounce. Fourth innings batting will be difficult.

ah, a fellow sherbro.

Watto for marsh is very good choice by Australia.England one short of bowler and they will realized day two after lunch.Rashid or Finn should include in Cardiff xl. Besides ALI, broad, anderson and wood.last time Australia scored 674 for 6 at this wicket

Even, if Sri set up 475, they will get with ease because all Imran, sarfaraz and yasir, plus rahat were in half pant when masood got out
They were 101 percentage sure of Pakistan win.
All 4 above relax and not even bother to put pads on or pant.

England have 5 legitimate bowling options

That would mean moving Stokes up to five and Buttler up to six - they won't do that.

I like the idea of a two-spinner attack on these slow, low, dry English decks, but whom would you drop to accommodate Rashid? Broad? Wood? Anderson and Stokes are nailed on.

Well I can't see them doing it but based on recent form I'd have Wood over Broad.

Though Wood is the kind of bowler you wouldn't take to Australia because he's too short

Need to mop the tail quickly and get into it. Luckily for Haddin England scored quickly so he hasn't cost us the game yet.

Broad getting a working over with the shortball, no surprise here!

England pushing up towards 400 possibly.... 362/7

England well on top, Moeen Ali at 8 turning to be a good ploy.

100 up for MJ, hes not enjoying this pitch

Moeen nearing 50...

380/7

Hey badge, what is your handle on the Dog?

Can I safely assume that due to the honeybadge handle you are also a Wozzie Legend?

I'm the space Chael guy few posts up in ashes thread over there.

The mullet is a dead giveaway, right?

Broad gone but a nicely little partnership that, Moeen needs to hog most of the strike now.

395/8

Broad out. He's starting to look more like his old confident self with the bat though.

How many can Beard and the bunnies get?

Lyon should have bowled alot of more overs as England have so many left handers. Not impressed with Clarke captaincy.

Btw what the hell is up with Cardiff...the ball won't stop swinging. Anderson will be lethal here.

Must be a very flat deck if even Bhai is scoring runs. If the wickets are going to be like this for the remainder of the Ashes, Australia better win all their tosses.

The deck doesn't matter here tbh. The ball has been swinging wildly. Australia have shown poor control.

Aussies look rattled. Perhaps didnt expect such a fightback. England's approach has been refreshing

Johnson continues to have a another poor day

Fantastic knock by Root a good gritty knock by Ballance. And some good counterpunching from Stokes And Moeen. England have put up a good score. The key will be if Jimmy can get it swinging and knock a few over before Lunch put the Aussies under pressure

Barring rogers i expect all the Aussie batsmen to be aggresive here...

englanbd wasting a review already, not to clever that!

Mark Wood experiments more than all the other England bowlers combined.

Good display at a great scoring rate. If we can get them out for 320 then we'll be in a really strong position.
