England v Pakistan | 1st Test | Old Trafford, Manchester | 5-9 August, 2020 | Day 1 Thread

Dont know what exactly is Eng's strategy here. Maybe bowling few overs of spin with leg side field and hoping for the mistake from Pak.

Need to be careful with this flick shots on legside.

This is ridiculous

They have to bowl spin to stay on

Tbh, I don't personally don't agree with the criticism. Bad light shouldn't be England's problem. They should be free to use whatever ammunition they have. If they light is not good enough for short bowling, go off! Can't force then to bowl a certain way just so that the play can go on.

Masood looking very uncomfortable vs Bess spinning it away from the left-hander. Needs to try something different, use his feet maybe.

So umpires forced England to bowl spin?

Intent from Pak batsmen for the singles have been great in this innings. Hopefully we wont see a run out.

Yes. England came out after the break with a short ball field and barrage, umpires said the light isn't good enough and they must bowl spin to stay on.

Eng was offered to go off, they wanted to remain on the field and bowl spin. Nobody forced them to.

They didnt force them. They probably said light isnt good enough for fast bowlers so if you want to continue with that then we will have to call it a day.

They opted to use spinners because they would rather grt more overs to bowl at the batsmen in the fading light and try to steal a wicket.

You bet if Pak win this test all of England would be crying they weren't allowed to bowl pace on day 1 third session.

Shan better buy dinner for Buttler tonight. Lol

Shan generally struggles against spin since his early days, hopefully he can sort it out.

and to think he played a match winning vs herath in Sri lanka on day 5 , and struggling here vs this lallo spinner, amazing

Just close the day out without a wkt please
Can come back tomorrow and reassess
Been a great day so far. Let's keep it that way

Key difference is Herath was spinning into him and Bess is spinning away. Generally batsmen find ball coming in easier than going out.

I still remember when Nabi got Babar bowled Babar behind his legs playing similar kind of sweep he did against Root.

Babar just needs to hog the strike until stumps :)

Pakistan need to play Bess more confidantly here , that will be big advantage for rest of the series.

Nabi is an infinitely more skilful bowler than Root....

England must be realizing what it feels like to have an Akmal behind the stumps

Babar showing Shan how its done. Though off spinner was taking the ball away from Shan but, still he needed to be in line of the ball.

Bobby needs to play as if he is playing with the tail. Play out 4 balls then look for single

Pakistan should look to be around 200 for 2 at stumps today , that should be the target.

This has been one of babar best innings considering the conditions

LOL you must have forgotten his 90* batting with the tail on a venomous NZ surface. That was his best test innings to date, in my opinion.

He played a similar kind of knock in Eng itself, I think it was 60 odd before getting a fracture on his hand. Was a defining knock which helped in Pak win. Played a beauty of a knock in NZ as well with 90 something. He is just 25 many more to come.

So, how many of you were adamant that Buttler is superior to Rizwan with both bat and gloves? Already letting England down with one of the two disciplines, time will tell how Rizwan keeps and how the two bat.

On a rainy day, I think 49-50 overs in is decent. Rest can be covered in the coming days.
