England came from behind to win the Test series against West Indies and now go into the series against Pakistan with added confidence.

Overview

England v Pakistan, 1st Test
Emirates Old Trafford, Manchester
Wednesday, 5 August; 11:00am local, 10:00am GMT

After two convincing wins over West Indies in the last fortnight, England will hope to hit the ground running as they meet Pakistan, a side against whom they haven't won a Test series at home since 2011.

The 2-1 win over West Indies took England to third in the ICC World Test Championship points table after they gained 80 points. Two more wins in this series will take them above Australia who are placed at No.2.

Pakistan, on the other hand, are in fifth position and even a single win would put them level on points with New Zealand. The visiting side have been in England for a while and have played two intra-squad warm-up matches.

But Misbah-ul-Haq, the head coach, has made it clear that performances in the warm-up game will not influence the starting XI too much. It will be interesting to see whether Sohail Khan, who picked up two five-wicket hauls in the two games and has a history of performing well in England with five-wicket hauls at Birmingham and The Oval in 2016, makes the cut in the starting XI.

The selectors might consider Sohail ahead of Mohammad Abbas, who averages 66.2 in his last two away Test series in South Africa and Australia, for a place in the starting XI. However, Abbas himself performed reasonably well in the warm-ups and picked up 10 wickets in two Tests on Pakistan's previous tour of England in 2018.

With the Manchester surface expected to take turn, Misbah has hinted at playing two spinners. Pakistan might look to play three seamers, and Yasir Shah with Shadab Khan, a spin-bowling all-rounder.

England, particularly their pace attack, are brimming with confidence after the recent series win. The composition of the pace attack could once again be under scrutiny. They are likely to retain the same team from the last Test against West Indies and possibly rotate the seamers over the course of the series.

If Ben Stokes is fit to bowl, they might ponder leaving a fast bowler out to play an additional batsman in Zak Crawley.

Remember the last time

The last two Test series in England between these sides were drawn after Pakistan won Tests at Lord's (2016 and 2018) and The Oval (2016). England have a tendency to lose the first game of a series in recent years.

In eight of their last ten Test series, England have lost the first Test match, including the losses against Pakistan at Lord's in 2016 and 2018. Against West Indies, in the recently concluded series too, England lost the first Test at Southampton.

What they said

Chris Woakes, England all-rounder: "I hope I've done enough to be in that starting XI, but competition is high at the minute. We've got still two of England's greats charging in and taking wickets every time they play and we've got exciting fast bowlers as well."

Misbah-ul-Haq, Pakistan head coach: "For spinners there was absolutely nothing in 2016, but now when we see matches they are totally different and it looks like it's in our favour and we are going to play our chances"

Front-foot no-balls will be called by the TV umpire for the first time in Test cricket during the England-Pakistan series

Humid weather first two days so should bowl first I reckon

Anyone know how long before the match Sky coverage will begin?

All UK times:

August 5-9: First Test, Emirates Old Trafford - Sky Sports Cricket from 10.30am

August 13-17: Second Test, The Ageas Bowl - Sky Sports Cricket from 10.30am

August 21-25: Third Test, The Ageas Bowl - Sky Sports Cricket from 10.30am

Front foot no-ball technology will be used for the first time - on a trial basis - in Test cricket during England's three-match series against Pakistan, the International Cricket Council has confirmed.

Just a few hours before the first Test got underway in Manchester on Wednesday morning, the ICC announced the introduction of the new technology.

The responsibility to call no-balls when a bowler oversteps the mark currently lies with on-field umpires, but under the new system the TV umpire will monitor the landing foot after each ball and communicate to the umpires whether it was a legal delivery.

"Front foot no ball technology to be used in ICC World Test Championship series featuring England and Pakistan, with the support of both teams," the sport's world governing body tweeted.

"Performance of the technology in these tests will be reviewed before any decisions taken on its future use in test cricket."

The ICC has already conducted successful trials of the technology across men's 50-over international matches while it was also used at the women's Twenty20 World Cup in Australia earlier this year.

However, the governing body wants to ascertain the benefits of its use in the longest format of the game before deciding whether to widen its use.

The first Test is being played at Old Trafford, with the second and third set to take place at The Ageas Bowl in Southampton as England play a condensed summer schedule after the season was delayed because of the coronavirus pandemic.

With England's matches this summer all being officiated by home umpires amid the pandemic, the team responsible for implementing the technology in the first Test will be TV umpire Michael Gough, whose decisions will be passed down to on-field duo Richard Illingworth and Richard Kettleborough.

Let’s go boys!

The day has finally arrived.

Pakistan Zindabad :pkflag

I have feeling England stronger tailend batting(woakes, bess, broad) and inclusion of world class tailender in Stokes heavily tilts the balance in England's favour.

Tails contribution is vital so many times in England ... a reason to get Sohail in the XI

My dad is in Manchester and tells me it’s a batting day: quite windy and likely to rain around tea time.

He just said to me “I’d rather score 240 here on Day 1 than on Day 5, so bat”.

England has not won a Test series against Pakistan since 2010

England has lost the opening Test in each of its past 5 series

Pakistan has not won a Test series in England since 1996

Pakistan’s last Test win outside of Asia was against England at Lord’s in 2018

Looks like England are going with 5 bowlers + Stokes. Good opportunity against a thin batting lineup.

England can;t chase anything to win. The only way they can win is by dismissing us cheaply and score big in 2nd innings.. all onus is on our batsmen now... come on Babar!!!

Batting first. Great start, if we get close to 400 in the first innings, we'll be set.

Big big mistake 2 spinners ..makes no sense what so ever in my opinion ..batting first

Right decision to bat first, but I knew these guys weren't playing mind games when they spoke of playing two spinners. They're actually dumb enough to do it.

Bold & decisive call to bat, now need to back it - first session won’t be easy. Shadab is picked as a batsman, who can bowl a bit, which I think not a bad call rather than picking Fawad for the same role.

Stokes must be quietly very excited at the prospect of batting against Shadab, expect a world record in terms of sixes hit in a Test match. Very poor selection from Misbah. Shadab is a perfectly decent player in limited overs cricket but wasted in Test cricket. He can't contribute with bat or ball, at least he's a decent fielder!

Experts like Shane Warne saying it’s the right thing to bat first and Wasim Akram saying it’s an aggressive move to play two spinners !

Batsman need to do the job .

Keeper at 6 and Shadab at 7. Batting looks really light. Top 5 really need to do work

Shadab is clearly a bowler who can bat a bit, what are you smoking? They've picked him as part of a 2 pronged spin attack, whatever he gets with the bat is a bonus!

It is, but I'm ******** myself!!
May have been a good toss to lose given we are coming in cold

First 15 to 20 overs would be crucial for Pak batting due to overcast conditions. If they survive these with only 2 down then Pak could make reasonable total.

To be honest I’d be more disappointed if they replaced a seamer with Shadab instead of a batsman like they have done

Positive look from Azhar! Looked supremely confident at the toss, had a little bit of a smile when we won the call and made the right decision of batting first. Aggressive captaincy with the call to play 2 spinners keeping in mind 4th and 5th day.

Let’s do this!

England slip catching were very poor in 2018 series, let's see how they do this time.

Pretty much expected squad but I'd have played Fakhar over Abid and Amir over Shadab

I like Fakhar but he averaged in the 20s in the recent QEA Trophy on flat pitches with the red Kookaburra. Probably would've struggled against the swinging Dukes.

It wont go to 5th day...overcast conditions i am not sure our batters can survive their attack

I’m with MMHS on this.

Shadab is there because he can score as many runs as Fawad or Imam, but he’s also a top fielder and an asset with the ball if it gets to Day 5.

Likewise! He is the perfect choice for these conditions all things considered and gives good variety on a dry Old Trafford track during the 4th innings. His fielding alone makes a strong argument for him to be there since he can conjure wickets out of thin air!

Shafiq always struggle against ball coming in, How he will bat against these English bowlers?

Let's see if we can survive the initial 3 days.

Shan, Abid Ali, Azhar, Babar, Asad, Rizwan, Shadab, Yasir, Abbas, Shaheen, Naseem.

Pakistan won toss and batting first

You're joking, right?
Shadab will be lucky to get double figures batting and will be smashed all over when bowling. Knowing how the PCB works he will be dropped from the limited overs teams as well when that's the format he is suited to. He's not a Test cricketer and they're messing with his career by picking him.

I think a good call as batting first always gives more chance to win a game unless the first innings turns out to be horrible.

Anything above 275 would mean Pak is in the game considering what we have seen in the last series. Somehow if Pak scores 350+ then match would be 70-75% in the bag.

That was a terrible commercial to promote the match. Azhar is not a new star...
