England v Pakistan | 1st Test | Old Trafford, Manchester | 5-9 August, 2020 | Day 1 Thread

Batting looks weak if you ask me. Really need Shan and Abid Ali to perform. Don't expect much from Azhar and Asad

Keeper at 6 and Shadab at 7. Batting looks really light. Top 5 really need to do work
England have their keeper at 6 too. And Woakes at 7!

Woakes has reached 45 five times in 57 Test innings.

Shadab has reached 45 four times in 9 Test innings.

You're joking, right?
Shadab will be lucky to get double figures batting and will be smashed all over when bowling. Knowing how the PCB works he will be dropped from the limited overs teams as well when that's the format he is suited to. He's not a Test cricketer and they're messing with his career by picking him.

He is no Bradman but guy has 3 test 50s and 2 in England in 5 matches. Nobody can predict what he will produce in this series but he obviously has capability with the bat as he has shown in previously, looked much more improved in his stroke making in recent PSL as well and turned out to be one of the best batsman in that.

Will Baba hit an opening day 100? I have a feeling for Pakistan to compete Babar has to hit at least 2 hundreds in the series.

I think a good call as batting first always gives more chance to win a game unless the first innings turns out to be horrible.

Anything above 275 would mean Pak is in the game considering what we have seen in the last series. Somehow if Pak scores 350+ then match would be 70-75% in the bag.

300 is almost impossible for this Pakistan batting line up, unless Babar score 100+ which is highly unlikely because of his form in the practice matches.

Interesting fact. Hopefully our pacers in the lower order can apply themselves a bit too as Archer and Broad can sometimes contribute on their day.

That tail looks so long with Shaheen, Abbas and Naseem batting from 9-11.

Not very intelligent to pick two leggies but sums up Misbah for me.

England have played so much cricket over the past few months. Pakistan would need to be extremely cautious.

Let's see. I'm actually liking the fact that we are picking specialists instead of all rounders who are neither good bowlers nor good batsmen. The onus is on each individual to do what he does best.

Commentators talking about how spinners have found it difficult to perform on this surface.

The openers need to leave, leave and leave. Don't play anything outside your eyeline and play the ball as late as possible.

Shan’s toughest mental battle in terms of recent overseas tours.

He is very much capable of scoring a 50.

Pakistan and England cricket teams pay tribute to Covid-19 victims

Manchester, 5 August 2020:

Pakistan and England men’s cricket teams observed a one-minute silence before the start of the first Test at Old Trafford as mark of respect for all those affected due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Since the outbreak of the pandemic, nearly 6,000 people out of 280,000 infected have lost their lives in Pakistan, while in the United Kingdom; around 46,000 deaths out of 305,000 cases have been recorded. Worldwide, nearly 689,000 people out of 18 million have succumbed to the virus.

After all cricket activities were suspended in March, the Pakistan Cricket Board joined hands with the England and Wales Cricket Board for the resumption of international cricket to provide a lead to the global sport, ensuring the game continues to thrive, grow and develop.

Pakistan men’s national cricket team is in the United Kingdom since 28 June and have been looked after well by the ECB that has not only ensured their health, safety and comfort, but also provided them world-class training and practice facilities to prepare for the ICC World Test Championship fixtures.

PCB Chief Executive Wasim Khan: “For Pakistan cricket, this is a very emotional time. While we resume international cricket as part of our obligation and commitment to the global sport, our heart goes out for all those who have been affected by the pandemic.

“While we offer our deepest condolences and sympathies to the families of all the victims, we assure that Pakistan cricket will always remain indebted for their support.

“The one-minute silence is also our appreciation, gratitude and tribute to the front-line healthcare workers who have been working tirelessly and selflessly, and have even laid down their own lives in efforts to save others.

“In this pandemic, the paramedics are undoubtedly our real heroes without whose dedication and strong work ethics, the losses would have been far bigger and greater.

“Pakistan and England observing a minute’s silence is also a sign of mutual respect. The two boards and teams enjoy a strong bond. This relationship has never been so formidable and we look forward to fostering it in future as we aspire to benefit from each other’s experience, knowledge and support.”

True. Anderson and Broad can swing it both ways which sometimes makes you play the ball you dont wanna play when you misjudge the swing.

Shan has 0 control of his shots. Needs to be extremely cautious at this point

This is a anti misbah line up, 2 leg spinners suggest its a attacking line up with a allrounder coming in rather than a specialist bat

Which is my point... he's perfectly well suited to limited overs cricket but PSL is not Test cricket and since he scored those 50s he has barely bothered with first class cricket. Look at his performances in the last domestic first class tournament. If people are expecting a good performance from him, prepare to be disappointed.

Batting looks very light. We are are short of good batsman and we play one less batsmen.

If the openers get a decent stand then its pretty decent but I guess we should expect them to perform as well. If we're going to sacrifice a bowlers to backup our batsmen we should probably look at dropping the said batsman and replacing him with someone who can do the job.

Commies saying pitch has bit more cracks and will probably turn towards the end of the game.

Masood is a causality waiting to happen against Anderson needs to bat outside his crease.

Nothing Shan could do about those deliveries from Anderson. He’s simply too good a fast bowler

Positive look from Azhar! Looked supremely confident at the toss, had a little bit of a smile when we won the call and made the right decision of batting first. Aggressive captaincy with the call to play 2 spinners keeping in mind 4th and 5th day.

Let’s do this!
Let see where this aggression takes him when he comes to bat :yk2

I literally forgot that a Pakistan series unfortunately means Pakistani commentators.

Message from the dressing room to Broad.

Didn't Abid play a lot of games at Diamond Club ground ? He should be used to seaming and swinging conditions.

Averages 49 since 2015 in QEA Trophy.

We don't need 2 leg spinners, if your going to play 2 spinners then one should be a finger spinner.
